As a chemist, I can tell you that your safety rules for lye are pretty much standard operating procedure for laboratories and are excellent. The only thing I would recommend is that metal lye storage containers not be sealed tightly until the solution has cooled, otherwise the pressure buildup due to the reaction heat might cause trouble. The plastic containers can expand enough to compensate. 👍👩🏼🔬
Absolutely! Our solutions never reach over 105 degrees so this isn't a problem for me personally but for folks that don't prep with ice, they need to follow this advice!
@@SLCCherryChill I had the same question in mind. While browsing for the answer I found one soap maker who said in a video she'd be measuring the weight if the ice. But ... I would feel much more relaxed, if Katie could confirm this 😅

Almost 7 years ago, I came across a UA-cam channel of a young lady making soap, as I was trying to figure out how to best way to help my family members who were dealing with some pretty irritating skin issues. (Mainly, my three year old granddaughter, at the time.) This young lady put me at ease, as I watched and listened to her. I was so scared, in my mid-40s, to even go *near* lye, let alone work with it, so I started playing with Melt & Pour. But watching this young lady, who referred to herself as "The Duchess of Suds", have a guest in a video, she referred to as "The Queen", which was her Mom, Bonnie, I began to feel more and more at ease, as I connected more and more with the lovely woman I've come to adore and know as Katie! Here I am, almost 7 years later, running my own bath & body business, pouring candles and wax melts, and learning new things *still* watching this now married Mommy! Thank you Katie!!

She is so amazing. After learning from Royalty soaps, I made my first bar and my own company! Thanks so much for all you do to pay it forward! Living with anxiety, I didn't think I could work with lye and feel safe, but she makes me feel so safe as long as I was careful, wearing safe gear, and thinking safely during the whole process!
Thanks for the videos! I just tried my first soap after 6 weeks of curing. Took a couple of classes online, created a basic recipe with tallow, oils, fragrance and EO. Made a bunch of notes and took my time getting ready. It was stressful but worth it.
thank you for a very good speach about safety. I have been working in laboratory for a years and with NaOH you cant bee too safe. It is even better to use long leeves inside gloves so they wont dip in your liquids. laboratory jacket will be used in reason. it keeps you and a product safe and because of white color, you see if there is something wet.
I've watched a bunch of soap making videos and find it hard to stay engaged. but you add a perfect amount of humor that makes it a lot more interesting to watch. You're doing great!
I started making my own soap last year but was taught to soap when lye solution and oils were around 120 degrees. It never occurred to me that I could mix the solution beforehand. You have made my soap-crafting so much simpler. Thank you so much.
i was taught this as well. My only question is if you prepare the lye in advance, do you have to heat it when you start the soaping process ?or leave it room temp?
@@alexuswilliams2764 I've left mine at room temp. Just make sure your oils are around the same temperature. The mixture will take longer to come to trace but it will get there eventually.
If I could upvote more than once I would, thank you for not only pointing out the safety measures that are used but also why they are used. Favorite quote was about not being able to get back your eyesight if an accident happened.
Very good tutorial and safety instructions. I'm here watching this because I just watched a video interview with a girl who lost her sight to a lye explosion while making soap! I don't make soap and was curious as to what caused her soap-making explosion as it was unclear in her video... Now I know!
Katie, i have been buying your soaps for about 2 years and havent used any but the samples because i would be too sad to ruin your beautiful work! My husband thinks im insane but he knew what he was getting into when he married me!
I have watched this video over and over. You have completely inspired my soap making journey, the amount of info, recipes and inspiration you provide is do appreciated. You are awesome!!!
Love your video! And I'm so glad you mentioned how long a lye solution keeps! I'd love two how too videos from you! 1. how to prep different colorants (pigment, vs mica, vs ultraviolet,etc..) 2. a troubleshoot video. Soap on a stick, ricing, or one I'm still having trouble with why the same recipe, same batch, same fragrance. Turned out great for two colors (red and white)and got crusty on the third color(green). Thank you so much! My who family loves watching you!
I am researching as a beginner and out of all the videos I’ve watched. Yours are the best. Very engaging and informative, and so inviting and funny it put my worries of lye at ease! Thank you!!
Just want to say thank you for all the videos. I have recently started soaping after a decade of wanting to . Your videos have really set me up for success. I do costume crafts for living and often times safety is dismissed by employers. I am usually that person who annoys them by taking the extra steps to be safe and to keep others safe. So i really appreciate how you speak about safety and how it really is part of the process. I also love your sense of humor and dorkiness. I relate. Thanks again! 🥰
I plan to start crafting CP soap in the new year, and was a little nervous about using lye. Thanks for sweeping the lingering fear away with your counter clutter! ❤️
You are an absolute angel for providing so much help to so many people. You have an infectious personality and are such a joy to watch and listen to. Thank you so much for all you do.
One quick edit I would add, is that the pants you wear should not be 'skintight'. You want to wear loose fitting pants so that the pants don't keep the lye on your skin if your solution gets on them.
I stumbled across soap making Videos on here a few months ago and have seen and learned so much. Back over 20 years ago now, my boys were in Scouts, Summer camp was coming up, Being an Assistant Leader I was give the job of setting it all up. Being from Ft.Worth and almost all the rest of the Family was in Southern OKlahoma, (aka Chigger Mosquito, haven...) I knew my Grandmother made homemade soap our of grease drippings... it had not been that long before she had given me a ball of her home made soap. (in this area it kept the chigger and mosquito away) So, a coworker had a cookbook from Arkansas and the down home cooking there was also instructions to make Homemade Lard Soap... SOOOOOOOOOO I copied it down and went home via the grocery store. I bought fresh clean lard, and Lye for opening drains (LOL) and used water right out of the tap.... Well I set about making the soap. No Dye no Fragrance just down right old fashioned LYE soap... Well working with a meat thermometer, a glass bowl and a stainless steel dutch oven and a beer flat lined with a plastic bag I set about to make the soap. I had not heard of trace, emulsion, or saponification. After working to balance the temps of the lye and lard I mixed them together stirred and stirred with a Wooden spoon ( I Know LOL) I was guessing at what I was doing, and well did manage to get it poured into the flat. A couple of days pass. I had water in the bottom of the flat. Being Extra careful, I did pour the small amount of water off and let the soap set for a couple more days. I then cut the soap into hunks could not call them bars. Waited a week or so more and then tested the batch... Low and behold it was soap and I got suds from washing my hands. At camp not only did the boys use it but as well as the other adult leaders. Needless to say Our boys did not have chiggers all over and did not have mosquito bites. and were not covered with deet or sulphur powder as well. .So each Summer I got out the stuff made up a batch until my sons were out of Scouting. I have not made any sense but am very interested in making more fancy soap with color and smells ... After the old way of hoping it would turn out to seeing the best way to make it now I hope to be able to make some good soap to send my boys and grand children this summer
Thank you, for making this video. I am starting my own small business making vegan soap. And you didn’t bore me. In fact you are very clever and funny.
Yay! Thanks for sharing this information! Once again, I'm not a soap maker but I'm really curious about the process. I bought some artisan soaps from a local and had a super nice conversation about soap making with the owner (with everything i've learned from your channel, lol)
It's good for destinking and bleaching food containers, white countertops, sponges and forks, and removing polymerized oil. I think you could use citric acid. I use that to clean up soap scum and soda deposits on non-white items.
Thank you for this. Im a visual learner and while I would be alright with written instructions for most of the process, I really felt better about it being in a video for the lye water.
Wow Katie you not this one out of the park. I am so impressed in the direction that your channel is going to day. You have really come so far in just the few years that I have been watching you. Your enthusiasm and love for what you do shines through so well in this video. You can't tell that you don't love what you do. Thanks for another awesome video Katie. Take care and God-bless Deb
If you gave a business...please keep a MSDS notebook in an easily seen and accessible area! And all suppliers will send you an MSDS sheet on their chemicals you've purchased OR a link where you can print it off! Get your MSDS Notebook together sooner than later! Yes, every single chemical from dyes and isopropyl to sodium lactate and sodium hydroxide. EVERYTHING! (Sorry. That was the Navy coming out in me.)
Thank you so much for doing this video!! I've been wanting to get into soapmaking, and was concerned about working with lye. You answered all of my questions and made me feel a lot more comfortable!
wow super informative, this is the main reason why I have not started making soap but you have put my mind at ease? I do have a couple of questions... 1) did you say you have to use distilled water or tap water is fine? 2) how far in advance can you prep your lye, so you can do a few at a time I am assuming? 3) store in locked container after prepped? Or where do you store it once it is prepped? thank you so much for this video serious I am learning so much from you!!

OMG...she makes so much sense! Not only am I not afraid anymore, I have confidence. Thank you Duchess of Suds!
i want to thank you so much for you providing and educating us with all of your knowledge for soap!!! i started to make soap in 2017 and like you said in a video soap making was not as popular as it is now and now alot of information was out there!! i had to research so much and wished back then there was a 800 i could call just for a question i might have had lol but thank you so much because you provide the little details but they are all needed. i def learned some new things from you!! i struggled alot with lye and it hardening so fast for me but thanks to you i now know a better process 🙌🏽 thank you so much for EVERYTHING YOU ARE PROVIDING TO US!!! you are really truly appreciated!!
I'm not sure I ever really care what Katie talks about, I just know I could listen to her talk all day and just fall asleep! Such a soothing sound 😂
I'm starting to make soap and this video is the best. Thank you so much, God bless you. Lye has to be handled with safety...
You tube seriously needs a ♥️ button.🙄. This is the kindest thing for you to do. ♥️♥️♥️ Not alot of Crafters will share recipes, and tips. I mean why will they buy it if they can make there own right?. This is for real a kind act. I'm hoping the universe gives you nothing but good things from here on. I have a serious interest in trying soap making, and I'm buying things in stages, so I can make a proper try at it lol. The lye is pretty intimidating. Thank you for putting this out here. You guys are most excellent.♥️♥️♥️
I am so grateful for this video. I watch it every single time I make lye water so I don't forget a step.
So excited that you're making soap making so accessible to beginners!! Love you Katie
Today after watching all the Royal Academy episode I bought all the items needed to make cold processed soap. I’m so excited to get started.
thank you for a very good speach about safety.
She's so wholesome. Must protect.
I made my first batch of soap today. So far I'm super excited and can't wait to cut it.
I saw a lot of videos about soap making, honestly u r the best , in all aspects, honesty ,clarity, and funny too and wonderful work, so thank u
I love this girl. She keeps things real.
"...the lye water will eat it!" I really do love watching your videoes (5:00 time stamp - spoon recommendations).
I did it. Just made my first batch of lye. Now on to my oils. Next video. 💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻
Katie has the name of a superhero.
yayyy thank you for doing this...slowly getting my ingredients and equipments together to start making soap for the first time
You are an absolute angel for providing so much help to so many people. You have an infectious personality and are such a joy to watch and listen to. Thank you so much for all you do.
One quick edit I would add, is that the pants you wear should not be 'skintight'. You want to wear loose fitting pants so that the pants don't keep the lye on your skin if your solution gets on them.
Thanks for that note!❤️
or a long front apron
Thanks :) I have a question regarding lye, is it safe to touch your soap after 24 hrs of making it without gloves?
As a chemist, I’m really proud of you! 👍🏼
I've watched this video several time and purchased everything... Watching 1 more time...than I'm going for it Prof. Katie!😊
As a safety professional, this was very refreshing to watch
Giiiiirl I am so so excited you made this video! I want to make soap very badly but don’t like the way others do it.
Happy holiday!
Thank you Katie for this informative video, this helped me overcome my lye fears for when I make my first batch of soap.❤❤❤
Ok, more questions: how long does the completed soap need to sit in the mold before it's safe to touch without gloves? Thanks so much! :)
I have no plans to ever make my own soap, but I'm gonna watch the video and enjoy it anyway!!! Thank you Katie and crew, I do love your work! 🇳🇿

When I say this is the most informative video I love it straight to the point.
You're a kind and wonderful person.
I wish all the great things in life for you💕
Thank you so much for doing this video!! I've been wanting to get into soapmaking, and was concerned about working with lye. You answered all of my questions and made me feel a lot more comfortable!
That was way more thorough than Brambleberry; thanks! I wouldn't have thought of the cleanup precautions!
You will be a great enrichment instructor for homeschool programs.
Great Video Katie! We need more Lye Safety video's out there for new and even experienced soap makers.
I just started to make soap, and I didn't know you could prep the lye days in advance. Thank you so much for that tip!
wow super informative, this is the main reason why I have not started making soap but you have put my mind at ease? I do have a couple of questions...
1) did you say you have to use distilled water or tap water is fine?
2) how far in advance can you prep your lye, so you can do a few at a time I am assuming?
3) store in locked container after prepped? Or where do you store it once it is prepped?
thank you so much for this video serious I am learning so much from you!!
Love this girl and her charisma! Learned so much! 🤩
Holy sheet, every time i look up how to get started with soap making THIS is the information i'm looking for!!! THANK YOU!!!
