"Life is like riding a bicycle, to stay balanced you must keep moving." Thank you, Sarah and Rich, for sharing information on the healing aspects of movement and cycling as it relates to PD.

@28:30 (…Theracycle) helps someone to move at a speed that is faster than what they can generate on their own and maintain that speed for a longer time than they can do own their own” ….. I suggest it’s the RPMs not just the exertion.
I love your work and am a long-time subscriber.

My brother inlaw rides his bike. He gets frozen sometimes when walking. Can just shuffle his feet slowly when he does. He has just discovered if he mimicks the tick tick sound of the bike he can start walking again. It's probably because he is concentrating on the sound instead of concentrating on his feet. Worth sharing. Hope it helps someone.

You are absolutely crazy. But then again, so am I. A few years ago I used to have to use an electric scooter to get around. A year and a half ago, I tried riding a bicycle, and discovered a miracle. I found that the instant i put my foot on the peddle, ALL my symptoms were gone. I had perfect balance, control, even at walking speed. I have been riding regularly, including a 30 mile course. I no longer need the scooter. Period.

I have been using my Theracycle for a several months now. I ride every day, if possible in my schedule - and usually for at least 30 minutes (I did have to build up to that). Since doing this, I have regained my usual longer and faster walking stride, and I have regained the arm swing in my left arm, and now my right arm is beginning to think abut joining the fun! Before I got my Theracycle, I had tried to get back my stride and arm swing using walking poles. I had to totally concentrate on getting my arms and legs in synch - right arm goes forward with left leg, etc. If I did not focus only on that, I would lose it and get all tangled up. After some time with the Theracycle, I am walking naturally and spontaneously again without having to think it through. I like to ride at 13 or 14 mph. I set a goal of riding 30 minutes and going 7+ miles at 14mph. When I start out slower to loosen up a bit, I will ride 15 mph for 10 minutes or more to try to meet my goal. Last summer I biked on some of the Rail Trails here in Vermont, and I know now I will be able to do that again this summer. I recently added dribbling a basketball as an exercise, and that is helping my coordination and also building up my arm muscles. I had forgotten that dribbling requires pushing the ball down to have it bounce high enough to push it down again. When I was younger and before Parkinson's I did not even think about dribbling as requiring arm muscles.

Hi Sarah, I totally believe in cycling and love your Parkinson's Plan of Attack!
I was diagnosed with PD seven years ago. My symptoms (tremor) are only a little worse. What works for me: High Intensity Spinning three times a week in the gym; deep meditation (TM) = deep rest every day; I recently added the Zach Bush 4-minute workout three times a day. This combo with a good diet, meds and a few vitamins have slowed the degradation, but I'm turning to you to help me improve. I'll join you for the April push!

I didn't read all of the comments but you should address balance on a bicycle. I used to love riding my bike but now with PD I'm afraid to try it. My balance just walking is terrible!

Forced does not mean higher effort. It only means higher RPMs due to (the external force of) a stronger rider in front, or a motor on a Theracycle.
Floreced exercise is not “whipping” someone to bike harder than they can.
    Jay Alberts clarifying this:
    ua-cam.com/video/9a2TCELFQHE/v-deo.htmlsi=DdopTXyXb98Ok0aq
@0:52: “…by ‘forced exercise’, we mean a mode of exercise in which your voluntary efforts are being enhanced or augmented … to exercise at a rate faster than they would on their own.”

Would you recommend exercise apps like Peleton or Zwift, if you do not have access to spin bike classes for parkinson's?

I saw that this did not get answered. I am a 66 years old retired physical therapist and avid cyclist. I rode my bicycle 4000 miles last year. Yes, use Zwift, Pelaton, whatever!
