Colorado: Rocky Mountain National Park, make a reservation, drive in from west side (after having a meal in Grand Lake) and go thru to east side to see Stanley Hotel in Estes Park. At the peak of RMNP, stop at the visitor center. Many other short hikes on the east side. Have fun! We did all 50 states with our kids over a 17 year time span. Don’t force a goal if it ruins the fun. Good luck and be open to changing plans.

Utah - Take the National Park Route in Southern Utah. Especially Arches and Bryce Canyon, two of my favorite parks. The mountains of Northern Utah are pretty too, but you can see pretty mountains in other states. But you won’t see things like the stone arches and formations of Southern Utah in too many other spots. Have fun and enjoy Utah!

In Pittsburgh, PA, take the kids to Primanti Bros. to try a sandwich the Pittsburgh way (French fries on the sandwich). And visit Kennywood Park - a great amusement park for the whole family! Visit the strip district where the trucks come in and unload their wares. There are lots of cools shops to check out and some restaurants that would be unique.
And in Buffalo, where I now live, you might want to check out the Anchor Bar where the Buffalo chicken wing was invented. It is still a very popular spot!

Also from CT and I would second the prior comment about New Haven Pizza- Pepe’s, Sally’s and Modern -- the pizza Trinity and all within a mile of each other . A can’t miss destination.
Also would recommend Mystic Seaport and Aquarium. Right off I-95. A great family destination.

Washington State - If I were to recommend just one destination, I guess it would be Mount Rainier National Park, though it is SUPER popular and busy during the summer months (I think they now do reservations for entry.). For fewer people, there's the North Cascades and Mount Baker near the Canadian border. Of course, the coast along the Olympic National Park is amazing as well. I greatly prefer the wilds on the western part of the state to the city, so a visit to just the Seattle landmarks seems like a very limited peek at the state. I'll leave to other Washingtonians to sell you on the eastern, much drier side of the state.

Western South Dakota is beautiful. Lots of things to do in the Black Hills including the famous Mt. Rushmore, Custer State Park has some beautiful small lakes you can hike around and you could hike Bear Butte by Sturgis . Avoid Sturgis if it is the first 10 days or so of August unless hundreds of thousands of motorcycles are your thing.

For Iowa, a lot of the prettiest parts of the state are in the East…but if you want to see something unexpected and unique hidden in the middle of nowhere corn fields, I’d check out the Grotto of the Redemption “ in tiny West Bend Iowa. However this is likely out of the way for most road trips and perhaps not terribly interesting for kids. So if you try either the State Faur, or the Clay County fair depending on time and location, those are both good options.

@@SodasOnTheRoad with that route, you can stop at the Amana Colonies near Cedar Rapids, the National Czech and Slovak Museum in Cedar Rapids, the Field of Dreams in Dyersville a little west of Dubuque, and Dubuque is a pretty area (as I said…East part of the state. :-). Connecticut: Food (pizza)- Wooster Square area in New Haven. It's right at the intersection of I-95 and I-91, so likely on your way for a road trip. You can wander over to Yale, which viewers will likely recognize.
But my favorite: Pick up the Appalachian Trail via the Undermountain trailhead north of Salisbury in northwestern CT for a great round-trip day hike to Bear Mountain, the state's highest point. I'm learning much from your channel, please keep it up, and have fun! And definitely interested in hearing what MY living choice will have on Medicare.

How fun! I grew up in Detroit, Michigan, and highly recommend going north to Macinac Island... no cars but a ferry ride over to the island to hike, ride horses, or rent a bike to cruise all around. It's awesome. Now, I am living and retired in Arizona, where you may enjoy a stop at Lake Havasu and see the original London Bridge that was actually transplanted there piece by piece. I must say, the Grand Canyon is overrated unless you spend a few days there to get the full effect. It's a pretty expensive tourist trap. Can't wait to armchair travel along with your family. I grew up with 5 siblings, and I certainly understand the pros and cons of traveling. It will be an adventure, though.

Depending on mode of transportation I would recommend US 129 the tail of the dragon. Unless you are in an RV. If in an RV, avoid it. Motorcycles and cars like it, there are ppl that set up to take pictures throughout the road and have websites to pay for a copy. Beautiful scenery along the way.
For Colorado, watch out for the altitude, might take a few days to acclimate. I Avoid Denver even though there are things to do, an aquarium, botanical gardens, water world theme park and elitch gardens. Things NOT IN Denver, You could drive up to Pikes Peak (mountain) or take the Cog Railway up to it from Manitou Springs which is not too far off from I25. However some people have a hard time breathing due to the altitude. So just be aware of that. Lol you said your wife is into fitness, in Manitou there is a stairway. Called the incline just an idea. But again, remember the altitude thing.
Southern Colorado also has the sand dunes! If you can handle spicy food and make it into Pueblo, CO. I recommend a slopper. From Gray's Coors Tavern. It is right off I25 and pretty much center of Pueblo. Parking is a little tricky sometimes. Good luck in whatever route and destinations you take!

We’re in Western NY where you must see Niagara Falls (be prepared if you want to go to the Canadian side), Buffalo (chicken wings invented there), the Finger Lakes, Letchworth State Park, George Eastman House in Rochester, and tons of craft breweries.
The 1000 Islands are in the northeast part of the state, and the Adirondack Mountains.
Then there’s the New York City area downstate.
Probably not time to see everything.
Since you’re driving, I’d do the National Parks and get the America the Beautiful pass to save a fortune on admissions.
There are many places to stop if you venture onto old Route 66 along the way.
Your kids will never forget a trip like this, but be sure to enjoy the journey and not limit yourself to a tight schedule!

Minnesota: So much to see/do it's hard to nail down. Obviously can't go wrong fishing/boating/camping near some of the 11,000+ lakes. We always love the North Shore (Duluth, Lake Superior) but that's a bit further north than your routes. We also love the scenic drive from Minneapolis down Hwy 61 along the river through Red Wing, Lake City etc to La Crosse WI. In Minneapolis/St. Paul, definitely great restaurants (we love Kincaids, Mason Jar, Patrick's, The Malt Shop, Red Rabbit (near Target Field), Manny's, Brit's Pub, etc.) Also recommend catching a Twins game at Target Field if it works out (great stadium!), Walker Art Center, Minnehaha Falls and the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes (even just to drive around). Additional Minnesota thoughts: For food, Walleye is the best fresh fish to order (almost anywhere). Also, love your cute kids - Valleyfair amusement park in Shakopee is a fun time with kids, as is Nickelodeon theme park and Legoland, both in Mall of America. TBH, I wouldn’t stay past dinner time at MOA though, as there can be a less “family friendly” element that can show up there. Also St Paul has both a Children’s museum that’s quite good and a Science Museum with cool dinosaur stuff. (And Peanuts statues around town as it was home of Charles M Schultz who created the comic strip.). I admire your commitment to generating lasting family memories- I’ve just started “Die with Zero” - one of your book recommendations- and as we’ve just completed year 1 of our retirement, boy does focus on experiences ring true:). Safe travels!

Erik, over my life I've been to all but three states (ND, VT and HI). In the Northeast definitely Niagara Falls (awesome), Ogunquit ME and some of the cities for historical reasons (Boston, Philadelphia and DC but I'd steer clear of NYC -- yuck). In the Southeast: Charleston SC, Savannah GA, Cape Kennedy FL, Mobile AL (you can tour the USS Alabama and other historic naval ships). In the Midwest: Upstate MI (Traverse City, Saute St Marie), Sandusky OH (Cedar Park). In the north: Mt Rushmore SD, anywhere in MT, WY (and Yellowstone NP) and ID -- all beautiful. In the Southwest: The Stockyards in Fort Worth TX, San Antonio (Alamo, Riverwalk), McDonald Observatory in Fort Davis TX, White Sands NP in NM and of course the Grand Canyon in AZ. In the West, I'd steer clear of Las Vegas and go to Reno/Lake Tahoe instead, and I would steer clear of the cities on the west coast and concentrate on the WA and OR coastline and the national parks in CA. Go on a swamp tour. They are a lot of fun. Check out the French Quarter. Go to the World War II Museum. It's amazing. Take a ride on the St. Charles Avenue streetcar. And eat some of our world class food. Get a roast beef po-boy at R & O's. Also Audubon Park and the zoo.
