I was a transplant to South Dakota from Colorado. I’ve since moved back to one of the most beautiful locations in Colorado but I miss South Dakota like crazy!
When I was little my mom and dad would take me, my twin, and 2 brothers to Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse every year in the summer, my dad always loved the history and scenery in South Dakota
Always loved the unique beauty of South Dakota landscape & old school western/farming feel. Pow wows also definitely worth seeing (believe one of the big ones is held in July--get Indian tacos/fry bread). Sturgis biker rally is also a wild time (believe 3rd week in August). 4th of July event at Mount Rushmore/Crazy Horse also great--best to make lodging reservations ahead of time during big events.
Kolaches! Yes! Also, in Rapid City the Firehouse Brewpub was exceptional! And Custer has a great little museum worth checking out and of course Jewel Cave and Wind Cave were great! (Along with the larger attractions.) Great review as usual!
The Navy has taken me from Box Elder, SD to Pensacola, FL and I have found a great little donut shop with GREAT Kolaches! Spicy jalapeno sausage in the middle!
There is one wall drug sign per person in South Dakota. Just spitting facts here. I went there is 2020. Deadwood and Keystone are some of the coolest towns I have ever been too.
I grew up in SD and you did a great job of telling people how great the state is! Btw, I grew up in the Northeast corner...the Lake region. We have a ton of hunting and fishing.
Definitely listen to that last don't. I was driving through Spearfish Canyon, one minute it was sunny the next it was hailing and the area was under a tornado warning.
Fun fact: Spearfish canyon holds a world record for fastest temperature change. In January 1943, the temperature went from -4 degrees F to 45 degrees F in two minutes. It had something to do with a strong wind I think.
@@randyhaight7202 yeah it was the wind shift. I love talking bout that when I'm talking bout south dakota. "Our weather is extremely bipolar here in such in such state". Yeah well did the temperature ever jump 49 degrees in 2 mins. No didn't think so south dakota holds king to that title.
We visited SD in August oh 1998 I do believe and we had on t-shirts and shorts and even swam that evening. We woke up in the middle of the night and it was snowing like crazy. It was awesome.
As a kid in Michigan, I was fascinated with the West, So was delighted when my folks decided to take us kids on a vacation road trip to Yellowstone in the summer of 1955! The very first time I saw the authentic 'West' was visiting South Dakota on the way. That was definitely a highlight of my youth, and I remember with pleasure seeing the beauty of the Badlands, the grandeur of Mount Rushmore, the impressive Corn Palace & Wall Drug Store, let alone the gorgeous landscape like I'd never seen before! Since then, I've visited a dozen countries, lived in Europe, been all over the 'Lower 48', lived in 5 states, and have been a California resident (mostly) since the '60's; yet SD remains special in my memories!
I remember when I visited Wall Drug. It was the greatest thing I had ever seen. It completely changed my life. I basked in the glory of its beautiful 50 cent coffee. Forget Wall Street. Wall Drug is where it’s at.
The weather, yes it can be quite varied. A couple of the widest swings in temperature records are here in the Black Hills and nearby. When the wife and I were visiting, before we moved here, went to Mt Rushmore on 6 June. Couldn't see the faces for the snow! I've use my lawn mower and snow blower in the same week.
I’ve lived in South Dakota my entire life. They have wall drug signs literally all over the country- famous for its free ice water. They could be found in the most unlikely places such as Shanghai. There have been signs in India, Africa, Vietnam and even the South Pole. I’d say the most fun part of our state is the black hills, ( rapid city, sturgis, deadwood, wall drug, keystone. ) we have tons of small mining-now turned ghost towns. Of course there’s also Mount Rushmore and crazy bourse monuments as well. Tons of caves to explore. South Dakota is also home to the beautiful fairburn agates (our state gemstone) most people are friendly here, our state had very low crime rates, cost of living is rather reasonable. What’s not to love? And some of the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets you’ll ever see.
Pretty good review on my home state. One thing I might add is "the opener" on the third Saturday in October. Pheasant hunting has been a longtime tradition for residents and many out of state pheasant hunters.
You forgot that we have the best pheasant hunting in the world. I live in a sportman's paradise. You can hunt deer, antelope, elk, coyote, prairie dogs, ducks, geese, fishing for walleye, small mouth bass, and also the best burgers and Indian tacos. So much to see, taste, and do. Not to mentioned our South Dakota certified grass feed beef...best in the country if you're a carnivore.
I currently live in South Dakota, west river. There is some wonderful history and geology out here. Wonderful landscapes, a lot of really great places for hiking and photography. There are also lots of little museums all over the place so be sure to check those out. Including fossil sites! South Dakota has some rich paleontological history including mammoths, T. rex(don't talk about SUE. Just trust me on this), Triceratops, and marine reptiles from the Western Interior Seaway that covered a fair amount of the state back at the end of the Mesozoic. And there is a lot of history in Deadwood especially and they really love their history. I haven't been up to Deadwood much personally but from when I have been, it is a beautiful town with a rich history. They love their historical outlaws. Also, support local businesses including native American businesses. They make some really great stuff and have a lot of really interesting history and culture as well.
In 1986, from a trip to EXPO 86 in Vancouver, Canada, we saw the wonderful MT Rushmore Park, and the Badlands Park, and the Crazy 🤪 Horse under construction.
I have lived in several states now and now I’m in a more remote part of South Dakota and it has to be one of my favorite states, I love the land, the people, and the history. The only down side is the unpredictable and severe weather we get, currently where I’m at the wind is gusting at 60 mph and it has been like that for a day now and will continue to blow for two more days. We also get a lot of hail and wild blizzards.
Just stumbled over your UA-cam channel - and as a European who has been traveling to the US every year for the last twenty years, I am really exited about the way you present various places of the US. Thanks for some great and fun insights.
Kind of the same thing here. I worked in US law enforcement in Europe and the USA and got to see a lot of the world. Living in Mexico as a retiree has slowed down almost everything for me and literally it crapped on my parade when covid hit. But South Dakota will be my US base for the rest of my life. And I'm finally starting to travel again. I hope you really get to travel to the USA again soon. Best wishes.
Went through the area, Wall Drug, Deadwood, Crazy Horse all that. Had a great time. Just a block from Main St in Deadwood watched a doe tip toe across a church parking lot in mid day.
We have traveled through South Dakota several times. Each time finding more to see. The people are so friendly and the service fantastic. We found September a good time to tour. No crowds and room rates were lower. Looking forward to our next visit.
I lived in Sioux City, IA for many years….right on the border of SD and Nebraska on the Missouri River. As soon as you crossed the Big Sioux River at Sioux City, you were in South Dakota…..and there’s a “Wall Drug” sign right away. LOL Only 434 miles! South Dakota is a wonderful, free state, where people are genuinely friendly. My wife is from Aberdeen. While driving in the wintertime from her parents home to Sioux City, my car stopped unexpectedly in the middle of nowhere. Within ten minutes, no fewer than five cars stopped to offer assistance. The last vehicle was a pickup with log chain, who pulled my car three miles into the village of Bradley, SD ( birthplace of the late Senator Hubert Humphrey) where a mechanic at a local gas station repaired my clutch, and then REFUSED payment because it only took him about minute to diagnose and another five minutes to fix the problem. I love South Dakota.
Thanks for the info. I was from Cherokee, IA. I went to USD from 1979-83. A friend of mine was from a family that loved fast cars and speedboats. He took me to Yankton Lake with their boat. Great time. I later worked at CitiBank in Sioux Falls processing card applications. There were a lot of pretty gals there!
I’m from Oldham England checking the weather out I noticed there’s an Oldham in South Dakota so thought I’d check out South Dakota - it looks brilliant 👍👍
The very best thing about South Dakota is the view of the sky durring tornado season. Those massive super cells are spectacular especially when your driving toward them. The night sky is amazing but you need to be away from any city lights so there's no obstructions to the view.
Love going to South Dakota! Hubby, Dachshund and I were there this past Sept! It was our first time going in the Wall Drug and my first time seeing the Badlands! It was awesome! Will have to check out the Corn Palace next time, never heard of that, and the East and West River divided. Glad I ran into this video.
I’m a South Dakota native. I’ve lived here all my life except for a 6 1/2 year stint in Texas (I’d live there again if I couldn’t live here...love that state!). Having said that, there’s sooo much stuff he missed...we have some pretty cool museums, Ellsworth Air Force Base ( right next to Rapid City) has a great museum, plus an air show every year...which is fabulous! Spearfish is a very pretty town and home to Black Hills State College. They also have Festival in the Park (Spearfish park is gorgeous!! Great play and picnic area, plus it’s right next to Spearfish Creek, which is a beautiful creek...it’s easily accessible for wading and fishing). Custer State Park has many lakes, lodges and campgrounds that are absolutely beautiful (located in the black hills). And great restaurants. Try the Alpine Inn in Hill City...it’s an interesting place to eat! There’s also the now defunct gold mines that’s worth checking out as far as historical interests go. We have ski slopes close to the Deadwood-Lead area. We have rodeos and tons of other stuff to do! Also lots of snowmobiling... I could go on and on...but I won’t! Give it some thought to vacation here. We love tourists and I think you’ll find a lot of unknown hidden treasures in this beautiful state!! If you decide to move here, welcome, put please leave your liberal voting at home! We’re a great free state because we value our freedoms and fiercely protect them !,

@@sledawgpilot I don't understand why you think it is appropriate to tell people how they should vote. People should vote however they god damn want wherever they live for any reason. Furthermore most people don't move because their state is a dangerous overtaxed craphole. I moved to Rapid City from California because I don't like it there but not because it is a craphole. My sister and I just got back from a random impulse weekend trip to SD. We didn't come close to doing everything we wanted to. We totally underestimated how much stuff there was to do. One thing we learned, I-90 has huge expanses where there are no facilities. So take advantage of them when you see them.
Don't forget to drink water - the dry air gets you and you don't even know it... was my favorite vacation ever!! so much to see and coming from the midatlantic - such a change.
Thanks for mentioning the delineation of East River/West River. I'm about to tell you something you will never forget. The 100th meridian bisects the state of South Dakota as well as bisects the US. This roughly marks the boundary between the semi-arid climate with mountainous terrain in the west and the humid continental climate affected by the humid air from the Gulf of Mexico with the flat plains in the east. This is why you have agricultural lands in eastern South Dakota which make it much like other Midwestern states like Illinois, Iowa and Indiana as you mention in the video. West of that line you'll find more of a ranching economy. It can be quite a stark difference once you drive over the Missouri River. This dividing line of semi-arid/humid climates is not only true for South Dakota but also for the other states divided by this meridian.
I live in ND & we have that same issue. The Missouri River divides state in half. Bismarck and Mandan are literally across river from each other yet the weather is different.

Mount Rushmore is one of the famous sights to see that will not disappoint. If available, try to see the special night program with the historic movie and light show. I have lived in the Black Hills my entire life and I'm tellin ya you don't want to miss Custer State Park or Wind Cave National Park. The scenery and wild life are beautiful however please remember that the Bison (you might know them as buffalo) are wild animals. They may look nice and docile but they are very large very fast and can be very dangerous. We want all of our visitors to have a great time here but getting gored or trampled by a 2000 pound animal isn't most people's idea of fun. Also please remember Bison can run about 35 mph so don't think you can approach them and just run away if they get mad, they will catch you. I wish I didn't have to say this stuff but people do get hurt or even killed far to often because they treat the wild life like animals at a petting zoo.
Hey Evan, I'm visiting your beautiful state in the spring. Thanks for the tips. Any recommendations for "must go to" restaurants or fun places to eat ?
Stop in the Tyndale bakery for " real German baking"...Off HWY 50...Also nice VA memorial with all Bon Homme County Combat Veterans..( My Dad's name is on it..Korea)
The weather in the Black Hills is very volatile. It can be in the 50s daytime high in July, or hot as hell. Storms are unpredictable, but July and August are usually more stable with drier weather. A few years ago, we encountered 2 inches of pea sized hail that completely covered the roads in areas in the middle of the summer. It looked like smoking snow from the sublimation. Another tip, get that LDW insurance from the car rental place. Whether it's the hail or the deer, chances are good something will get the car.

When I was little my mom and dad would take me, my twin, and 2 brothers to Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse every year in the summer, my dad always loved the history and scenery in South Dakota
Hello Amy how are you doing Happy 😊 New and i hope 🤞 everyone is doing well.
Great video. We love South Dakota. Its a great state. Ive always thought of SD as the Texas of the midwest.
One of my best vacations was in South Dakota
As an Australian I am amused with you pointing out that South Dakota is not a dry wasteland, cause that is us. I really want to see Deadwood, so cool.
Hello how are you doing Happy 😊 New and i hope 🤞 everyone is doing well.
Kolaches! Yes! Also, in Rapid City the Firehouse Brewpub was exceptional! And Custer has a great little museum worth checking out and of course Jewel Cave and Wind Cave were great! (Along with the larger attractions.) Great review as usual!
The best cave is Wonderland Cave. It's the only living cave the public can tour. The other 7 caves are dead caves.
The Navy has taken me from Box Elder, SD to Pensacola, FL and I have found a great little donut shop with GREAT Kolaches! Spicy jalapeno sausage in the middle!
Glad you enjoyed your stay here!
thank you for the nice things said about our state.
There is one wall drug sign per person in South Dakota. Just spitting facts here. I went there is 2020. Deadwood and Keystone are some of the coolest towns I have ever been too.
Don't forget the winters!
Haha oh yes. Snow in may is great.
Every month with a r’ in it and sometimes May and if you’re in the hill June and August
Ahh yes the 4 ft of snow we get every year and the at least twelve snow days a year!!
-22 as I type this
The best time of yr here.
I grew up in SD and you did a great job of telling people how great the state is! Btw, I grew up in the Northeast corner...the Lake region. We have a ton of hunting and fishing.
Shhhhh lol
Hello Linda how are you doing Happy 😊 New and i hope 🤞 everyone is doing well.
Crazy Horse is a MUST SEE. It may never get done, but wow.
I spent 10 days in Western SD this Summer. Great trip and great people
East is just rural ghettos
My daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter live 45 minutes from Pierre, SD. It took me a bit to say "pier". Gorgeous state!
Hello Tammy how are you doing Happy 😊 New and i hope 🤞 everyone is doing well.
Definitely listen to that last don't. I was driving through Spearfish Canyon, one minute it was sunny the next it was hailing and the area was under a tornado warning.
That's like every other day 😂😭
Macey Elric I rode my motorcycle from Deadwood to Sturgis in a full on white-out snowstorm, in August!
Ted, the weather here is insane. We've had blizzards on the 4th of July, and gone for picnics on Christmas
DON'T skip the donuts at wall drug!
And don't forget about the 5 Cent Coffee and Free Ice Water
Or the ice cream. Wall Drug has the best ice cream
Think I gained 5 pounds after visiting Wall Drug.
I moved to SD from TX and it’s so plentiful. It may seem empty but there are so many things here and hardy people to meet
We visited SD in August oh 1998 I do believe and we had on t-shirts and shorts and even swam that evening. We woke up in the middle of the night and it was snowing like crazy. It was awesome.
We are very protective and safe here, in general. So please say hi!
@@SouthDakotaFacts I live near walldrug
Thank you for thinking my state cool
Not locking down has my interest!
Rapid City here 😎
@Jen H Brookings here!
BHSU student here!
Your governor is hot 😆
The weather, yes it can be quite varied. A couple of the widest swings in temperature records are here in the Black Hills and nearby. When the wife and I were visiting, before we moved here, went to Mt Rushmore on 6 June. Couldn't see the faces for the snow! I've use my lawn mower and snow blower in the same week.
@@jaadow77 I totally agree the weather here is bipolar.
Hello Alicia how are you doing Happy 😊 New and i hope 🤞 everyone is doing well.
be there in June, can't wait to ride around
Its a beautiful deep red state where everything is better!
Pretty good review on my home state. One thing I might add is "the opener" on the third Saturday in October. Pheasant hunting has been a longtime tradition for residents and many out of state pheasant hunters.
I got shot once on opening day!
I LOVE Wall Drug AND they allow dogs in the store! The only place they can’t go is in the restaurant. Best ice water I ever had.
Hello Colleen how are you doing Happy 😊 New and i hope 🤞 everyone is doing well.
In 1986, from a trip to EXPO 86 in Vancouver,
Canada, we saw the wonderful MT Rushmore Park, and the Badlands Park,
and the Crazy 🤪 Horse under construction.
I am from SD, I truly did love the part about Sioux Falls "Yeah, Its a nice little town", biggest city in the state
That's MY home town. It doesn't get much credit compared to West River, but I miss it EVERY SINGLE DAY!!!
Hello Mary how are you doing Happy 😊 New and i hope 🤞 everyone is doing well.
Just stumbled over your UA-cam channel - and as a European who has been traveling to the US every year for the last twenty years, I am really exited about the way you present various places of the US. I had a plan for visiting SD and Wyoming this, which obviously didn't came through. But once the pandemic is over, I will take a look at your videos once again as part of my travel prep.

South Dakota is the most beautiful place in the world!!
The Black Hills definitely is in the top 10 list.
You need to expand your world.
@@tedecker3792 I did..maybe you need to
Thanks for the info.
Thanks again!
Thanks for the great feedback about my home state.
Thanks for these videos. Very helpful for Planning a Family Vacations.

When I was in Amsterdam, I saw a sign in miles and kilometers to Wall Drug. I guess the place is really popular.
The very best thing about South Dakota is the view of the sky durring tornado season. Those massive super cells are spectacular especially when your driving toward them. The night sky is amazing but you need to be away from any city lights so there's no obstructions to the view.

Will have to check out the Corn Palace next time, never heard of that, and the East and West River divided. Glad I ran into this video.
Hello Dear how are you doing Happy 😊 New and i hope 🤞 everyone is doing well.
I grew up in Deadwood/ the black hills area. It’s so beautiful and there’s so much to see ❤️
I’m a South Dakota native.

I live 12 miles from the 100th Meridian, on US Highway 12, in Bowdle, SD.
@@misterwhipple2870 what a coincidence! Half my cousins grew up in Ipswich, SD and half of them grew up west of Mobridge, SD, both on Highway 12.
