Where Did the Cannabis Plant Come From?

- Though cannabis's wild beginnings remain unknown, by looking at the plant's genes, scientists can identify its closest living relative.
"Hops, which we use for beer, is the closest existing species to cannabis," says Cornell University Emerging Crops Specialist Daniela Vergara. Plant geneticists estimate that some 28 million years ago, cannabis and hops plants diverged. Today, cannabis contains special compounds called cannabinoids that its relatives lack. Two of these compounds are THC, which results in a high, and CBD. The development of cannabinoids may have helped protect cannabis from UV light or from being eaten, though researchers aren't yet sure.
Some ancient communities, including the Chinese, Romans, Greeks, and Indians, utilized cannabis for medicinal and industrial purposes.

Psychedelics saved me from years of uncontrollable depression, anxiety, and illicit pills addiction. Imagine carving heavy chains for over a decade and then all of a sudden that burden is gone. Believe it or not, in a couple of years they'll be all over for treatment of mental health related issues.
To be honest, mushrooms are one of the most amazing things on the planet and it is natural, they serve in many ways not only for mental related issues.

Microdosing was my next plan of care for my husband. He's 59 & has many mental health issues plus probably CTE & a TBI that left him in a coma 8 days. It's too late now I had to get a TPO as he's 6'6 300+ pound homicidal maniac. He's constantly talking about killing someone.

Saved my marine buddy with buds he would dump his monthly scripts out in the toilet and flush and I would hand him a zip I'm so proud of him. now he has a engineering degree and produces topshelf cbd products helping alot of vets in the process.

As an RN, I work with a lot of pharmaceutical reps ect. Well, to put it lightly, the day before Marijuana became legal in Michigan, the pharmaceutical reps and their bosses, the rich pricks, were flipping out. They were panicking because they were facing a population shift from for profit medical care to people taking matters and their own money into their own hands! Like I said they were in a PANIC 😱!!
They should have burned one and relaxed.

I've smoked grass for 35 years. Hardest part for quitting is 3 days of being triggered than your fine. I found weed keeps mellow and my artistic style comes out. It dont help alot with pain but keeps the mind calm. A group of friends get together and drink whiskey, someones going to fight. The same group burns a few bombers, everyone laughs and eats some nachos.
Yep, that 3 days is exactly what I’ve experienced. It’s just breaking the habit and surviving the dramatic drop in brain serotonin and dopamine levels. You can crash into a bit of depression for a few days. Once your CBD receptors have rebalanced and reset, you’re fine. Milder side-effects than going on a low-carb diet. If cannabis is addictive at all, it’s only mildly physically addictive.
I’ve heard people make the argument against modern strains of cannabis for being far more potent than the kinds our ancestors smoked, but that just means you now need to smoke/vaporize less in order to get more effect, so that would actually be healthier, in relative moderation
skunk is an afghani strain it was plenty strong enough to begin with, it just didn't get to the west for a while
To be fair the genetics were always there, we just finally figured out how to grow the best product we can, and the optimal drying/curing conditions

I have studied cannabis for approximately 50years. I can tell that plants grow outdoors are still more potent than the greenhouse varieties, though the greenhouse types seem to be more consistent. I never noticed the pain reducing effects until I began treating my arthritis with it. It does truly help(at least it has been my experience).I hope THC will be "declassified" in the near future.

That because they can't make money if we grow it ourselves! So they say it bad but will make man made cannabinoids! To sell to you.
On top of that, most of these synthesized drugs are followed up by lawsuits 6 months to a year after their distribution because someone's either died or grown an extra head as a result.

I was out of the cannabis world for 30 years, then a retired undercover drug cop (of all people) told me that it was a thousand times stronger than it was 30 years ago. I decided then that I needed to investigate that, and I've been a happy cannabis consumer ever since (and my retired friend approves).

I'm in Michigan where it's legal to grow your own. It's SO much fun to do. I don't use it at all(work) and have no use for it at this time but it has so many benefits. I give all mine to people who can seriously use it & benefit from it.

I can't find a source anywhere for any good psychedelics in my area, I suffer some pretty bad depression and i got a chance to try K and man it was a miracle substance, I felt free,the only high or euphoria was from the relief of my vices being released, that's exactly what it did
The psychedelic experience is temporary but many people have permanent results
Mushroom completely turned my life around and my anxiety and panic attack disappeared and my personality changed into a much more generous loving person

Not sure if we would consider humans crossing plants and selecting pheno types as an artificial process, as humans are part of nature. Creating Thc or cbd in a lab with yeast is a better definition for an artificial process.😀

If you grow your own, make a topical solution from the leaves. Works better than any CBD ointment.

I think the cannabinoid also give it a way to resist water when made into rope, As people selected plants that would produce more oil’s for more water resistance cannabinoid levels grew

It's true that the sticky cannabinoids resist water! I don't know about rope, but I noticed this very wet summer that my outdoor-grow pot plants all had major fungus on their leaves, and yet the buds were all fungus free. The sticky stuff must also resist fungus by repelling water.
@@ROLtheWolf Some terpenes have potent antiviral/bacterial/fungal effects, this could explain what you saw. There are myriad uses for the plant. The people responsible for its continued prohibition anywhere deserve not to set the laws we have to follow.

Citizens should be allowed to grow their own just like you can grow tomato plants. The government should not be taxing the sale of the plants any more than they do seeds you buy for your garden or vegetables at the grocery store. It is disgusting the government only approves use of the plant if they can put an exorbitant tax on it. Research how many politicians voted against it and then left office and now are investors and owners in marijuana companies. It’s not weed it is greed that kills people.

We have medical available but it is only allowed to be produced by two universities and distributed through 9 state licensed pharmacies and purchased by doctors recommendation only. They count up to 14 grams as a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of $100, any quantity over and they can put you in jail plus a monetary fine. Thank you for sharing.

This boys n gals is the master plant, I grew 35 females to full maturity, 13 of them were super potent, while the remaining 22 were fairly decent, all of them were grown with seeds I saved from personal purchases over a ten year period, I had full pill bottle that I randomly selected them from, of course their was an additional 17-20 of the plants which were male that met an early demise, I was lucky and knew a grower who taught me how to grow and temper the plants from sprouts inside my grow room to being transplanted to my outside garden in between my house n garage that was completely fenced in an unaccessible to to public at large, I fondly remember the night air blowing across the plants and in threw my bedroom window, was the most relaxing and satisfying fragrance, oh how I miss n reminisce those days, that was nearly 20 years ago now, ten years after all this my house got raided due to the county sheriff who seized my pill bottle full of seeds, so needless to say that ended my career as a grower, it is still illegal here in Iowa and it really sucks tbh

how did cannabis become domesticated ... lol ... we lived in caves ... we brought in dried plant materials to kindle the hearth fires .... it got really smoky in the cave with cannibis and next morning we went out looking for more ... like the dog and cat and humans ... who domesticated who remains an open question ... we have companion animals as well as plants ... cannabis chief among them ... how did weed get domesticated ... no brainer ... when we were ready the teacher appeared ... chimps don't smoke or eat it ... we do ... we have chemistry to process weed built in and male humans have there own abilities to produce canabinoids ... and both male and female emzines to process cannibis and turn it into more potent conditions ... we are made for the stuff ... more depth of knowledge and more imagination would improve your insight into cannabis and mankind ... it is one of the most widely culitvated and distributed plants globally and historically ... we have been culitvating the plant globally for at least twelve thousand years ... if another plant has such a relationship with man I would like to learn of it ... hops maybe imagine that ...

the brick weed was bad , but the sense or the regs was actually decent with a low amnt of seeds , it was cheap , a half a pipefil was enough . then they came with skunk and it got smelly and expensive , now this 26 percent stuff is nuts . 2 grams for 45 dollars at the dispensary is too much . i would much rather pay 40 for a q or 7 grams of regs which was a lot weaker . hopefully eventually the prices will settle in my state . its way to expensive to consider it as an option to treat chronic pain now .
Grow ypu own they obviously have medical look into what you need to get to be able to and do it. You grew one thing and thought this would go great with that and tried it. 28000000 years ago was still quite recent in the evolution of plants.
Born in Yakima WA, it was normal to smell weed being smoked by the adults but I didn't try it until age 14 with a friend.. Was a terrible experience. Same year my dad(barely knew him) had me help him install a transmission one Saturday and offered me pipe heading out to the driveway, we smoked together and I had the best 3 hours with my dad and finally began to bond. I've smoked on and off most of my life but after I had health issues and was slowly dying and in pain 24/7, a friend gave me some weed but because my job I hadn't smoked in 2 years but when I decided to go for it my pain went away in 30 seconds! 6 months of weight loss, sleeplessness and nonstop pain had me wanting to die because doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong but finally they did and I had major surgery and fully recovered but thanks to Marijuana I could eat, sleep and not stress about medical bills...a plant that grows from the ground did all that😀

I'm Canadian and have smoked flower for decades. I disagree with the assertion that many strains are more potent today than they were thirty or forty years ago. We didn't know
as much as we do these days, but sativa strains with high THC levels such as Panama red ,Acapulco gold and red hair were delightful and potent. There's sense out there that THC is a terribly toxic and wasting drug and only lately are Canadian dispenserys offering strains with properties that smokers want!
Studied 36yrs so far....only side effect is the munchies....lowers my blood pressure (less meds) great for general pain, ptsd, arthritis, loss of appetite, causes general state of happiness.....no I am not a doctor but play one on the internet.....😁

I've been consuming cannabis for nearly 30 years now and not only do I have my medical card but I also have convinced a bunch of people who didn't smoke to get theirs and now they swear that edibles are a cure all.... There is no negative side effects of consuming cannabis, except the fact that you have less weed afterwards. 😂

the lady in the gray sweater... her audio is inverted on one channel (for some portion of the frequency range?) which causes the image to shift radically depending on the distance to your speakers. your sound engineer is messing around with you.
Wrong about potency. In the 1960s when cannabis was coming from Mexico into the US market it was often more of the leaves, less actual bud so the numbers of random tests may have shown that overall, the confiscated material was say, 6% THC. People that smoked weed back then say there wasn't bad weed around and that you always got good and high, and plus, it wasn't long before Mexicans shipped sinsemilla (without seeds, females that aren't pollinated). That was all bud, not leaf and so if you measure that now it shows as say, 12% to maybe 15% THC. It doesn't matter if you use an extract that is 99% THC, you don't have some extreme reaction from a high percentage, you still get stoned as usual but you only may take 3-4 puffs, not 20-30 puffs for average weed in a joint. Potency is not percentage; you may get fully stoned on 8% outdoor weed and not get fully stoned on indoor 20%+ weed. Potency is many factors. It's not alcohol, it's not linear.

Years ago(early 80s) the was a article in High Times where someone was grafting hops vines into cannabis stalks. There was a high mortality rate but the ones that did survive had the same psychoactive properties as the cannabis plant itself. Why this didn't continue I wonder.

It's funny how 99% of user's think high thc is an indicator of the feeling they're going to get. The question you ask in a dispensary isn't what's the highest thc flower you have its what are the budtenders smoking because those are two completely different things.
So true. Back in my day in the 70's and 80's weed was far better than the clones and gmos amd aitoflowers of today. Most young people think todays weed is super potent. That's because they have never smoked real street weed. Take gorrilla glue original. Now there are dozens of gorrilla glue hybrids. Same for wedding cake. Dozens of hybrids. All advertising as the original. Good luck finding lamdrace. Or real sativa. Back in my day you asked for a review of a weed and the smoker would say Man felt like my face was melting off. I was driving 5 miles an hour thinking i was speeding. But now. Ask for a review and the smoker sounds like a poet with colors that tinkle with the first toke. Followed by a calming wash of contentment and a desire to go outside and cut the lawn...when you hear that kind of talk you know you are being sold a dream. Thc means nothing. Real organic weed has properties that makes its euphoria different and unique to each user.

There are no GMO's in modern cultivars of cannabis. Also, I'm not sure you're aware of the idea behind clones. There's no monkey business, alteration or engineering involved in cloning. Clones are literal genetic copies of the mother plant. There's no reason to look upon cloning as being some sort of new tech designed to interfere with potency.
In the begging God created all seed bearing plants for man's use an consumption.
It has been a life saving plant for so many. It’s ability to provide reliable relief for those suffering from such a vast variety of ailments is reason enough to make it globally legal.

This is wrong. There aren't two different lineages but three. There's Cannabis Ruderalis which is mostly found in Russia but is much different than hemp or psychoactive cannabis. Come on Nova do your research better.

The definition of chemotype "Rolf Santesson, the Swedish researcher who coined the term in 1968, a chemotype is a “chemically characterized part of a population of morphologically indistinguishable individuals.”
While the definition of lineage is "simply descent from a common ancestor." When reading about cannabis chemotypes the names of lineage don't even appear. I guess I'm not a botanist but I'm having absolutely no luck finding anything online that backs up any of this 4th lineage. Even High Times only lists three. If we can't trust High Times who can we trust? 😅

This video is riddled with misinformation, God created cannabis just like it is. In every region on earth there are different land races. Those land races have not changed. All we did was cross sativa land races with indica land races. Creating a hybrid indica/sativa cross. But that naturally happens all the time.
Northern lights is one of those strains that has been around in Canada and Northern West coast since the 30's. They just called it home grown back then.

I'm willing to bet there are chemicals in hops that interact with cannabinoids because whenever I drink a craft IPA beer (vs any other beer) that is really hoppy, my cannabis experience is much different.
