    _____________________
    When we say chicken wing, what we're referring to this look into the follow through where the left arm in particular gets very bent, the distance between the elbows increases, the arm gets away from the body and you sort of have this chicken wing look.
    Typically there are two reasons why you would have a chicken wing looking finish. The first one is an open clubface. You will do a chicken wing motion - usually combined with a left wrist flip - in an effort to square the clubface. The second reason is because you are too steep. You would bend your elbows in an effort to not have the club run into the ground into the follow through.
    Ultimately, you do need to fix the root cause. But, you can also reverse engineer a fix. In the process of changing the movement pattern of the chicken wing, you may be able to fix root cause.
    You may think that just straightening your arms out will fix the problem. That may get rid of the chicken wing, but it doesn’t ultimately change the reasons as to why you have it. What you have to understand is that the arm bending is part of the problem. But, a bigger problem is the lack of arm rotation. I have fixed a lot of chicken wings by just adding arm supination. Arm rotation is the missing link.
    What you want to do with the drill to fix this is combine the arm rotation and staying connected to the body. If you have a chicken wing and you make your arm rotate more and you keep your left arm connected to your body, you will not have a chicken wing anymore. That's a guaranteed thing.
    How do I do those two pieces? In an effort to keep my arm on my body, I’ll throw something underneath my left arm, like a head cover, towel, glove or stick. If I make a swing and I keep that underneath my left arm, what can it not do? It can't go off my body.
    With that, you have to get your whole arm rotating more. I would even say to the point where my left palm is up towards the sky, my elbow is down towards the ground. And when you do this, I want you to have your arm bent.
    A lot of you guys try to fix a chicken wing by keeping your arms straight and your elbows close together. If that hasn’t worked for you, it's probably because of one of those other root causes I mentioned. You have to fix those and do it this way. You must have arm rotation to fix the chicken wing. If these drills don’t change your chicken wing, you're simply not doing it correctly or exaggerating enough.

    Took this to the range yesterday and it worked! Initially I tried with a glove under arm and I just could not connect or get my rhythm. Once I removed the gloves I was able to replicate the feeling of keeping my arms connected. I was able to start this connected feeling even just in my set up. Then I was able to get more inside and my strike patterns dramatically improved as well as dispersion and flight pattern (slice changed to small draw). Unbelievable really, as this is something I have been working to fix in my game for 2 years. Eric, thank you so much!

    I got rid of my chicken wing TODAY by realizing that in an effort to get a better strike thru more compression, I had far too much forward shaft lean. Dragging the handle through and not shallowing the club nearer my trail-side thigh forced me to compensate with the wing. Your vid on chipping is what helped me realize this since I’d had the chipping shanks for a while and was correcting it wrongly with more shaft lean, which also led to a high handle. Thanks for all of these vids!!! Wish you were in N.C.

    Always have had a bit of a chicken wing post impact, not huge one but noticeable enough that’s it’s always incredibly annoyed me just cause it’s ugly. My one golf coach always told me just to hit little punch shots or use the tour striker and I’ve probably hit 1000’s with no real improvement when I Try a full swing. Sort of figured that I must not be letting my left arm roll yesterday and you confirmed that with this video. Gonna work on this.

    Thanks for the video. It makes a lot of sense to me. I’ve noticed I chicken wing when I’m tensed up but not so much when I swing more freely. One question. I’ve always been told that left arm should stay as straight as possible. Is that just in the take away and back swing then?

    • @CogornoGolf

      It should def work toward straight....but adding in the rotation (supination) is one option to help change the clubface to remove the chicken wing root cause.

    Thanks Eric - you are a naturally good teacher and it was a very good instructional clip.
    A question if I may. I like the concept of the "reverse engineering". However, is it true to say that another way to fix the issue (not reverse engineering) is to simply ensure the clubface is square in the impact area? I guess what I really asking is - is it easier while playing to simply work on getting the clubface square rather than having to think about the rotation of the arm? Keen to get your thoughts on this. I am making the assumption here that provided the clubface is square at impact, the brain will see no need to create the ghastly chicken wing look. And can much compression and greater consistency come from squaring up the clubface the right way as opposed to compensating the "chicken wing way"? Many thanks!! :)

      Yes...100%

  • @Jim-yt2vu
    @Jim-yt2vu 3 роки тому +1

    Eric - Awesome video. I’ve got an off topic question. I know you don’t have a chicken wing but you are fighting pushes. When you keep your left arm closer to you and rotate, do you still push the ball?? With your great swing, I would think keeping your left arm closer and softer would eliminate your issue. I know many non tour pros who under pressure let their front arm get too rigid and in comes the push. Just curious. Thanks as always. Jim

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Jim!
      Yes thats something that helps!
      I miss to the right because my path gets too far from inside
      There are 3-5 main variables involved with that and by adjusting any of those I can fix push quickly.
      The reality is I simply to not practice enough to change my pattern...too busy making videos and coaching :)

  • @xJae14x

    Sometimes I feel myself chicken winging but I don’t normally, it just randomly happens. I realized for me, it can happen when I dip my trail shoulder (too much right side bend, too quickly) on the downswing. My left arm disconnects and has nowhere to go and then gets into an awkward position. Not sure if that makes sense, but that’s why it happens to me sometimes.

    What’s missing is another problem where the right side is completely dominating the swing, This can be resolved by firming up the left side and weaken the right arm and grip. Also concentrating on the left shoulder on takeaway and finally arm rotation as he says for a straight arm release. Key is to take the tension away from right arm and have it more relaxed and only take over at impact time.

    Eric, I believe the actual main reason why so many golfers have a chicken wing (the real root of the problem that then causes what you explained) is that they are told “Keep Your Head Down” so much that they stop rotating their right shoulder through the swing, as to not move their head. Their body is firmly set with ‘their head down’ and to compornsate through the swing, the left elbow HAS to come up - it can’t go anywhere else through the swing. - Using this premise as the main reason, can you provide ideas on how to fix it?

    • @CogornoGolf

      For sure part of it Milton
      Heres the details on how I would train getting the body and arms through the ball into follow through:

    Left arm chicken, besides from left arm not supinating enough, it’s also from the lack of body rotation after impact. My iron swings don’t have the chicken wing but my driver swing does. Can you also do a video on using the glutes in a golf swing? One of Tiger’s old interviews past year he said “my glutes are not activating in my swing”, just curious to see what he meant by that or how can one use their glutes in a golf swing. Thanks man! Always posting quality content!

      Thanks man-appreciate it. Chicken wing root causes can be a bunch of things....open face, steep downswing, no body rotation, etc. as I mentioned in video you want to find and fix root causes but can reverse engineer.
      Not sure on full video on glutes but maybe within other videos

    For the past three weeks I’ve only been working on changing my swing to incorporate the bowed wrist at impact and arm rotation,supination . Been doing this out on the course and range checking with video. (My course is pretty empty this time of year). Only today have I begun to get it while hitting a ball on the course. Big improvement in contact and consistency.
    Are swing changes normally this difficult to incorporate into the swing on the course?
    And the video feedback is essential,

    HI, Firstly....great video. However, you need to clarify arm rotation. As a biomechanist I hear alot of poor descriptions of body movements. The LOWER arm supinates (on follow-thru) and the UPPER arm externally rotates (on follow-thru). This refers to the left arm of a right-handed golfer.

      "Rotating the arms actually BECOMES APPARENT"
      Just because you SEE it then, doesn't tell you when it's starting.
      In reality its starting very early in the downswing....much sooner...
      "the chicken wing initiates before impact".....yes...so does the arm rotation solution! Youre safe!

    I have had a chicken wing problem. Your analysis suggests three or four causes- no lead arm suppination and folding close to the body on the folow through, face club open coming into impact, too steep a swing etc etc.
    For me none of the above were the root causes of my problem. My problem was not rotating my upper body through the shot- chest pointing downward at impact not toward the target. If your chest has fully rotated, your arms will rotate and stay close together naturally coming through the swing. That is just my expereince. each is different. Ensuring my trail shoulder rotates through the shot was the key to my problem and all those other issues you mention, melted away.

    Hi Eric what would you call the opposite of this ??? as a left-handed player my right arm feels as though it comes in very tight to my right side? my left-arm is extending throw impact but my right arm folds in . quickly limiting right arm extension through the ball I know it has a bit of fold very quickly , is this going to be the same fix ..... thanks Eric

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  4 роки тому +1

      Hey David!
      That in and of itself (right arm folding tight to side) is not necessarily an issue.
      This particular video (adding lead arm supination and fold) is to fix the "chicken wing" (elbow separating too much)
      How bent or straight your right arm should be really depends on other factors (body rotation, body extension, side bend, swing direction, clubface position, etc, etc)
      So not a "fault" per day.
      I would have to see a video of your swing to say for sure if you need to make any adjustments!

    I am a Hooker of the ball.
    I decrease the hook by restricting the arm rotation. But then I do have a worsening of the chicken wing.
    Using the Smart Ball as you recommend improves the flying right elbow. But the smart ball falls on the release because of left elbow chicken wing.
    Question is how to rotate the left arm correctly as you demonstrate above, but not increase my hooks?
    Thanks again excellent analysis and video lessons.

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  3 роки тому

      IF its not causing issues no need to change!
      Generally it changes the length of the radius (the distance between your left shoulder and club head)
      thus making hitting the ground (and hitting the ground in the same spot) more difficult.
      If also causes the left wrist to go into extension (cup/flip) prematurely which adds loft (less distance)

      Don..in chips..it's easy to try to keep the head of the club competely square to the target in the whole swing..I find this, unless its a very short chip..tends to cause me to duff the ground or thin the shot...our arms naturally will pronate if you allow them..just a tiny bit..in the back swing and coming thru!...it also helps me to hit the ball first even in chipping.

    • @CogornoGolf

      Yes----we all need to "time" to club face at impact. All of the best players do rotate the lead arm/club face A LOT but for sure can OVERDO (or under do) anything.
      If you are hitting pretty straight and far I wouldn't worry about it!
