    To anyone with an ED watching this - please listen to what Stephanie says near the end.
    The feeling of regaining normal hunger cues, being able to recognise hunger and to feel satiated, being able to just eat - it is possible and is such a relief when you get there.
    Not going to bed and thinking of breakfast or about what you'll next let yourself eat tomorrow. Not eating a meal and feeling exactly the same after it as you did before - actually feeling satisfied, mentally and physically.
    You don't necessarily realise just how much of your thoughts, day, mind and life it all consumes until you manage to get past it.
    It is worth it, I promise.

    • @tammy8779
      @tammy8779 4 роки тому +52

      @Chloe Q I was absolutely not suggesting that someone with an ED goes without seeking professional help nor solely bases their recovery approach off other people. My comment was just regarding her words which personally I could relate with strongly after coming through anorexia recovery. For me one of the biggest things was just learning to be able to trust my body again - getting hunger signals, being able to respond to them and beginning to think more clearly/logically and that only started happening when I began eating unrestrictedly.

    • @tammy8779
      @tammy8779 4 роки тому +14

      @Wilfy Derfliw I'm really glad you've experienced that too :)
      Ultimately we all have different paths through recovery and I feel that's important to respect. I went through recovery for anorexia and it was essential for me to restore weight - physically and mentally - and that will be the case for many others also.
      When in hospital treatment I found I was still restricted as my meal plan was gradually increased - in contrast to when going through refeeding at home where I ate a greater amount of food I found I managed to begin reach a mental and physical satisfaction, that I didn't in hospital, despite my weight restoring not restoring higher.

    • @tammy8779
      @tammy8779 4 роки тому +1

      @Chloe Q I haven't watched/don't follow Stephanie's channel/videos so I can't comment on that but I agree that unfortunately a lot of fitness/health 'influencers' do embodied disordered habits /mindsets - ofc there is a whole kind of spectrum from disordered eating/behaviours (which tbh I see in a lot of people in society) to full-blown eating disorders. It can be impossible to know where on that spectrum someone is - and it does make me sad to think that these influential people are potentially having incredibly negative effects not only on their own health/mindsets but others as well. I started using the Instagram recovery 'community' many years ago when I was near the end of my inpatient treatment and it has surprised me the change in it, for instance looking at hashtags and seeing so many fitness influencer pictures.
      As I said I don't watch videos on these types of channels (or follow instagrams like that) for the reason that I don't find them helpful - I've seen too many people say they are recovering and falling deeper into their ED under the guise of healthy eating or exercise etc. - but yes I'd agree that what you are saying regarding her videos/statements doesn't add up. Unfortunately again I've seen that with many people - words/pictures that don't quite click.
      Ultimately increasing intake/weight restoration is an important part of recovery - alongside other aspects. All I hoped to possibly to with my comment is signal to the (likely many) diagnosed or undiagnosed ED sufferers watching this video/reading the comments that things can change because I know how hopeless I felt at points thinking that I would never be able to listen to my hunger again, know how it felt to be satisfied after a meal or not have every waking (and often sleeping) moment consumed by thoughts of food.
      Take care :)

      Well lets be honest, it isn’t that easy.

    • @tammy8779
      @tammy8779 4 роки тому +12

      @@LOLsmileyface1992 No it isn't easy. I won't ever tell anyone recovery is easy - in fact I'd almost guarantee it'll be very uncomfortable - but it is possible.
      It took me 5-6 years from going in to hospital (and being diagnosed) to get to the point where I felt I could say I was recovered. The biggest thing for me, and many others I've spoken with, is deciding that you really truly want to change things.
      I put in a hell of a lot of work into recovering. Yes I felt like shit sometimes, yes I felt like giving up and had to force myself to make the choice to keep going every day, yes I had relapses and had to claw back - but I did it, and so can others.
      If you are in a not so good place just now, I really wish you all the best and hope things get better for you, xx

Low on energy, low on drive, low on motivation and really depressed. I tracked your progress and decided to give it a try. I can say 7 months later I feel amazing. I finally feel alive and oddly my mental state is alot better. Everything before this moment felt like a haze. Arina I am an elite athlete so the problem for me was over-exercising and not eating enough calories. So I slowly reduced the amount of exercise that I did, and made sure that I was eating enough food to fuel my body. To make sure that I would eat when I was hungry without restricting. Also I stopped intermittent fasting, as I found that it affected my hormone levels. It was a hard process mentally and physically, especially because as an athlete sometimes there’s pressure to have a certain “body image.” But in the end it was totally worth it, and I feel so much happier now.

      @@europeansocialdemocrat I think you're being incredibly narrow minded and missing the point.
      For one thing, since when is mental health less important than physical health? What's the point looking the "epitome" of what society now deems healthy, if you're miserable mentally?
      Regardless of Stephanie's weight (which btw, I wouldn't class her as being unhealthy) the message she is putting out there to young girls is incredible. That you can exercise and want to be healthy without needing to starve yourself or obsess over food. Since when do you need to be shredded to be a fitness influencer?
      Before you comment nasty comments like this, ensure you are well researched and up to speed with why she is doing this. Yes she has gained weight, but this is part of her journey to re-balance her hormones after yearsssss of dieting and restricting food, and of course to restore a healthy relationship with food.
      So it's funny how you're comparing her to how she used to look, implying she was THEN healthy and now she isn't. Since when is restricting food, damaging your hormonal profile and being an unhealthy BF % for a woman healthy? And on the flip side, eating when she's hungry, stopping when she's full and exercising to feel good about herself unhealthy?
      She is far more relatable and putting out a far better message how she is now. Show me where it says in the fitness rulebook that you need to be shredded, please?
      Before you comment on someone's video, think: 1) Do I really have the right to comment on this person's life, does it affect me? 2) how would I feel reading this?

    Thank you for being honest about your journey. I had an eating disorder and heavy gym obsession over a year ago. I would cry at the thought of eating more than 1400 calories a day, I would panic if I was invited to a restaurant and probably cry at some point, and I HAD TO work out 2-3 times a day with intense lifting to avoid shame from eating. I may have LOOKED like what I thought I needed to, but I was so unhealthy of mind and body - all I did was sleep, to avoid the hunger pains and fatigue. Videos like yours let me know it's ok to NOT be a size that isn't natural for me. I still workout , but I have cut it back to support my mental health/disabilities and now I eat a normal/good amount for me.
    Thank you again. This keeps me level headed.
    Also, even though it is SO obvious, YOU LOOK AMAZING AND I LOVE YOUR MENTALITY ON LIFE.

      Goddess Antheia,
      Depending on your height, body type and metabolism, 1400 calories is hardly a starvation diet. Training three times a day, however, is extreme.
      What’s so sad about the way these issues are being framed is that it’s leading to a false dichotomy. It’s as if one’s options are “starve and exercise compulsively” or “go all in and gain 40lbs.”
      Buttermore never starved. Nor did she do excessive exercise. Part of the reason why I deem her influence so negative is the fact that she presents her former lifestyle as unhealthy when in fact it was the way she *psychologically* reacted to a healthy lifestyle. She was perfectly healthy physiologically. But she came undone psychologically, which is a very different issue.
      These issues are being conflated.

      I’m a 53 year-old man. I’ve been a full time personal trainer and gym owner for 15 years and have been deeply involved in fitness since about 1983. I eat about 1600-1800 calories a day. I walk about 4 miles a day and train with weights 4-5 times a week. I’m in perfect health, lean year round and do it all with great joy and vigor.
      Your generation pathologizes everything from exercise, putting food on a scale and even putting yourself on a scale. That’s the real issue worthy of discussion. Why is this generation coming apart at the seams over things that other generations just do without much thought?
      I have a whole clientele who eats minimally, walks daily, weighs themselves daily and are alive and well in their 80s and 90s.
      Buttermore’s nutrition and exercise program was not extreme. Her issues are psychological bugaboos framed in scientific language.
      Please refer me to videos where she regularly ate 800 calories a day.

    • @SleepyLoaf
      @SleepyLoaf 4 роки тому +14

      @@vinoverita I understand that 1400 isn't starvation for someone less active. However it is still a deficit used to lose weight for MOST people AND with how much I worked out a day, my body only kept maybe 500 of those calories per day, compared to what I would burn.
      I agree the world needs to be healthy and active. However the social media age has messed with our perception of what reality needs to be.
      I felt extreme hunger, couldn't walk some days (after working out 3 times), and felt sick from starvation. I looked healthy, I was a healthy weight, but my mentality was not healthy. I haven't gained 40 pounds, however even if I did why would that be bad? So long as I am healthy.
      Also, "your generation" has had issues acknowledging mental health and other social issues, hurting yourselves and others in the process. So I wouldn't take the silent suffering of your age group as a good thing.
      Being obsessed with food/working out/calorie counting/a body type is NOT HEALTHY.
      so while I understand your fears of weight gain and obesity, this is not the place to voice those concerns. As none of us are saying to be obese, eat junk food, and stop working out.

    • @vinoverita
      @vinoverita 4 роки тому +2

      Goddess Antheia
      Without social media people of your generation could weigh food, log it, weigh themselves and exercise without pathologizing the whole process. It’s social media that is making you guys sick. My high school friends who were my fellow fitness aficionados are still super lean and healthy. We never viewed the process as crazy making. It was and is challenging. But so is earning a living, being married, raising children, acquiring knowledge, etc. That’s a general principle applicable to all of life. Being fit is not exempted from it.
      I don’t know how old you are, but I assure you that people ate far less in earlier generations. When I graduated high school in 1985 the average girl was about 10lbs heavier than Buttermore was in her lean years. I have photos of the gym in which I trained in the 80s which features people that look like they were of another species. It’s unbelievable how fat we are getting on account of bad ideas about what’s normal. Google film footage from the early 1920s. Look how much thinner everyone is. They would be awestruck at how much the fitness community eats and what we consider a starvation diet.
      Hunger, (like thirst, fatigue, sexual desire, etc.) is not an emergency. It’s perfectly natural, tolerable and healthy cue within sound limits. As a species we probably lived with the sensation of hunger as people live today with the feeling of heat where air conditioning isn’t widespread. It’s not an emergency. It’s natural. Being a little hungry will not make you sick no sooner than being sexually desirous (without fulfilling said desire) will make you ill. Anyone who thinks otherwise will not be happy with the implications of such a view once they live out this false idea. We need not act on every impulse or bodily cue. In fact, if we want to live a successful life, we can’t on principle. And that goes for fitness.
      Failure to come to grips with those facts of reality is what leads to the pathologizing tendency we see exemplified on this page. You younger folks are breaking yourselves on bad ideas and justificatory arguments. The result is that you have to feign contentment with less than ideal results, with bodies and habits that you’re really not proud of - and that’s sad.
      I work in the field of fitness. Young women today have less good results than they did 30 years ago without even trying. And they are tying themselves up in mental knots in the interim. The whole online fitness scene is crazy making. Buttermore is the apotheosis of that craziness.
      There is a better way.

    • @vinoverita
      @vinoverita 4 роки тому +1

      Linda Shishan,
      I’ve been a fitness aficionado since 1983. And I’ve been a personal trainer and gym owner for 15 years. That is, I actually make my living getting people fit, writing out diet plans. Hence, what I say isn’t based on hearsay or conjecture. Plus, I stay super lean, healthy and vibrant 12 months a year at the age of 53 all while eating about 1600-1800 daily calories.
      Would you like me to believe you instead of the facts of my years of training, working as a professional in the field and my own results?
      The central issue today is how we frame the process of fitness, how we frame the experience of hunger or temptation. If you frame them incorrectly, you’ll make yourself crazy. Hence, the false dichotomy we see today between anorexia and compulsions on the one hand, and going “all in” on the other.
      There is a better way. But it requires a different philosophical frame.

    Dude girl. I can't even tell you how cool it is to see that this is where you are with food! I followed you a few years ago for fitness and workout purposes. But then I realized I had been dealing with an eating disorder for years and I did exactly what you did with going all in (initially found out about that concept from Kayla Kotecki). Anyway, I stopped following all the fitness channels during that period for my mental health, and just stumbled across this video today randomly. I LOVE this content and LOVE that you've gone through this whole process! Consider me a subscriber again. :)
    You already know all the benefits of living life without restriction now, but just want to say I'm two years into this. My body is back at it's set point, which for me just happens to be what I weighed in high school (however I still do not weigh myself unless I'm at the doctor). I literally eat whatever, whenever. I'm not afraid to drink my calories, eat sugar, eat fat, put as much sauce on my food as I fricken want... it's wild. I initially gained tons of weight but now I weigh like 20 pounds less than I did when I was stuck in a diet cycle, eating egg whites and dry tuna and then binging on donuts and pizza and feeling sick and tired all the time. The weight itself does not matter to me at all anymore, but it's just ridiculous that I used to try so hard to control my body and it was like nah, screw you. Anyway, it's just so freeing to feel happy and energized and NORMAL.
    Anyone out there questioning whether this is worth it, IT IS EFFING WORTH IT to be on the same team as your body.

    Love how you have redefined your relationship with food and eat intuitively -- I think we as women a lot of times feel like we can't eat as much or feel guilty if we eat more than other people. Love your journey!

    Stephanie, I just want to let you know because of you, I was able to develop a really healthy relationship with food, my body and my mental health. I wasn’t in a good place when you first started this journey, and I’ve been following you since then. Thank you for being such an empowering person and a role model for anyone with an ED.

    In my opinion, you are one of very few women on youtube whose videos are not about eating clean and healthy and getting shredded, but which give a realistic idea of how normal amounts of food can look like. I already liked your channel before, but I love it since you've started the all-in-process.

    I get a lot of comfort from watching your videos, especially when I go back to my old negative approaches towards food intake.
    I struggled a lot with anorexia andespecially in times like these, you only have more time to think and critique appearances, but this is one space that I know I can come to and take a different approach.
    So thank you, Stephanie, you are genuinely and have been such a positive influence!

    Yes I love that you are so open about what you eat! It's hard especially during the quarantine to stay perfect but flexible eating is the way to go! Almost I don't eat very early and I don't get too hungry until noon which is great when trying to not over eat often. But naturally I just eat a balance of good meals!

    Hi Stephanie. I wanted to say you are an inspiration. I’ve watched your videos for a couple years and back in December I finally went to treatment for anorexia nervosa. Watching your “all in” videos have helped me notice that I needed to let go of that old girl I used to know. Of course therapy, groups and just being by myself have helped; but you just speaking the truth and showing me and everyone else your journey is just so amazing.

    Hi Stephanie, I'm french and I follow you since your beginning in your all in process. I really wanted to congratulate you because this is absolutely not an easy thing to deal with but you always show us the reality and try to keep smiling every time by pulling the positive side of everything, every little step or even back step. You are authentic and it is what we all like I guess. Again, thank you so much for the positivity you spread us and the acceptance you are trying to share with us. You r so beautiful and the most important is that now you feel good! You helped us at the same time. We don't give up, stay tuned!
