a trick i learned from a guy that builds subwoofer enclosures is lay your carpet out in the sun for about 45 minutes to an hour to let the carpet "relax" then it'll be easier to work with and you dont have to fight creases and folds, and on cold days a quick going over with a heat gun or a good hot hair dryer works a treat for making carpet more manageable, never tried it myself with anything other than replacing seat covers, great vid and an awesome solution to a problem, i'm thinking about working with a friend of mine to build a set of drawers for a '91 jeep XJ that i'm about to do a repower on
Well mate, that is the best drawer vid on the net. Well done. I approached Drifta for a set of drawers, but incorporating my own upright water tank at the rear. Unfortunately they could not accommodate, so I built my own similar to yours. What I learnt: 1. I used a sheet of 3mm HDPE that I cut. It was too thin. I screwed it in as I was not sure an adhesive would hold over time. As it was thin it slightly bowed. I also made the strips too wide @50mm. Your width looks good. Mine still slide OK, especially with silicon spray. 2. I remove it between trips. It is awkward and heavy to install/remove. 3. Nutserts can work loose when you are installing bolts. 4. Even expensive ply will bow. 5. Drawers are a bit overrated. I will re-design with one drawer, mesh shelving and tubs. 6. The Waeco dual fridge slides weigh a ton. 7. Price came in at about $1k including water tank. 8. Don't leave rear floor seat bolts unplugged...... Again...great job. Regards, Nick

Awesome build. I used that yellow plastic that electricians use to run wiring through stud walls for my "drifta" runners, couple of bucks for a three metre length from memory. If they get dirty, a quick wipe and some silicon spray fixes them.
absolutely brilliant video dude. it answered a few q’s for me prior to my build - the Teflon side strips as a guide to minimise sideward shuffling is perfect. well done.
You have done a great job, not sure what the fuss is with the drifta fan boys. We are talking about a plywood box with butt joints & covered in marine carpet. Teflon strips that have been used in the woodworking industry for 30 plus yrs.
Great video thanks for the ideas 35 years in the building trade I will let you in on a secret , Teflon is designed so that nothing sticks to it , silicone , max bond , sika , all might be good but 12 months it won’t be attached I found boat runners at Bcf 1500 long $20 It has a recess in it so it can be screwed Keep up the great work
I’ve got a brilliant silicone adhesive that will stick anything to anything - guaranteed. It would stick those Teflon runners, with the drawers, full of camping gear, upside to the ceiling of his factory unit 😉👍
Top DIY instructions. I used the tongue of yellow tongue flooring for the sliders, cost zero dollars & work well. Also if you cant fit the drawers in by yourself, they are way to heavy!
Awesome. Just like to point out this is the first and only video that I've seen so far where you get a nice professional finish with carpet instead of going the easy route and painting it black. Also like how you show laying down carpet isn't a easy task. Very nice.
Bloody brilliant job. Considering you hand cut all the components, it actually fit better then half the ones I have seen come out of Drifta and they CNC cut their components. Probably saved yourself around 3k and months of wait time.
Great drawers mate, will try build a similar set for the back of my car! Btw, the surface area doesn't come into play when calculating the force required to push the drawers, Friction force = (friction coefficient of the material) X (downward force or mass of object) You're saving money on materials by dividing it up into two strips but not halfing the force required to push the slides
I’m about to build an entire storage and bed system in my explorer and just read the entire drifts website. I personally found it extremely demeaning and while they say their cheap 1500$+ for just drawers and maybe a shift table system is unbearBle for someone on the pension. So thank you for sharing a few pro tips with us all. Super clean. Love your work.
Great video. i am going to make my own now. You actually did drifta a favor for people who dont want to make their own. Some coments here think you are taking business off them but really you are advertising their design. How many videos i see of other 4x4 you tube people showing their drifta draws and how they are made are kind of doing the same thing. Keep up the good work.

About to have a go making my own as soon. I like this Drifta idea of losing the slides in the draws.double up on the fridge slide ❤ great video and ideas 👍
I went to the boat shop and bought trailer slide strips . They were blue the strips I got. Ripped down the centre , cut some groves out of the shelves for the draws and screwed them in place. Draws slide real easy.
Awesome video mate, cheers. Just one thing frictional force is independent from the surface area. However, agree its still good idea to cut the Teflon strips down to not use as much material.
@@Australian4x4Adventures water storage can use the water bladder, there is a manufacturer in Melbourne. can put 90l I guess behind the gap of the second row. I got mine 75l for the Prado, fit nice and tight between the drawers and second row.
Nice job - well described and adapted from the awesome design of a drifta drawer! Having built my own a few years back I know theres a heap of work involved! One thing I did with my fridge slide so I can open the 2 orange locking tabs at the same time is to use a a strip of aluminium in a T shape, with the stem of the T laying flat on top of the 2 locking tabs and bolted thru the tabs, so you just press down on the strip of ally and it pushes down both tabs at the same time. It wont work with your slide out bench tabs now in the way, but may be useful if you find that slide out bench doesnt support the weight well enough cos it does look a bit floppy when fully extended. Looking forward to the walk thru!
Yeah I’ve seen those joining tabs. And I’m trying to figure out a way to adapt it to my setup. The tables a whole lot more stable once it’s bolted down to the car. My sons 10kg and we’ve changed his nappy on that table a few times now and it doesn’t go anywhere. Having said that I do have a trick up my sleeve for that exact thing. That’s all in the next video. The fridge runners are rated too 227kg. 190kg at full extension so the runners are strong enough.

Had everything cut & started putting it all together until I saw this vid. Love the table under the fridge. Just looking at how tight you have it around the fridge, what about airflow?
With my fridg the vents are on the front so it works. If your vents are at the back or side then you would need to build in some way of venting that space too

No dramas at all. Hope it helps.
great video mate, calendars too!!!
Hahahaha. My fav
Can I place an order 😂 awesome build mate
😂. Side biz maybe
Had everything cut & started putting it all together until I saw this vid. Love the table under the fridge.
Just looking at how tight you have it around the fridge, what about airflow?
With my fridg the vents are on the front so it works. If your vents are at the back or side then you would need to build in some way of venting that space too
Brilliant!!!! im inspired legend👍👍👍👍👍
Love it.
Show me the finished job when ya done. 👍👍
Great work and very informative....have a canopy coming so the construction help was great. Love the music ..In a nice way fits the laid back approach you have...look forward to the next vid...with slightly more specifics...looks like few peeps will be ordering from Kilsyth. May try a more affordable option first eg yellow tongue or equivalent then upgrade if needs be ..thx again ...as an aside a few yanks put what looks like a thin sheet of masonite shiny side up at the cabinet base and shiny side down on the drawer base as the slider....however slider decrease surface area I reckon.....
Hahaha. Yeah seems like a few ppl will be ordering from the amount of ppl asking.
Yeah next weeks vid will have heaps more finer details.
Second watch through in preparation for my build. Only just noticed the calender on the wall.
😂. It’s a good calendar.
It was a client I done a job for, she gave me a copy 😂
Thats a bloody rip snorter! This kind of thing i reckon is beyond me, but after watching this i think i would give it a fair old crack.
Only thing is, what would an old sparky need a router for?.......shot fired lol......but bloody awesome mate
I built my own drifta style draw system as well
Sick. It’s a good feeling when it all comes together.
Thumbs up mate what an awesome set up 😎👍🤙
Thanks buddy.
Next episode runs through the finished product
Love the drawers! Gonna have a go at doing similar for my pajero. What's the tool your using 16:03 mins in?
router
Awesome job
what you want to use is UHMWPE for the slides, but im sure they will be fine, im currently doing my own
Yeah a few ppl have said that. I’m pretty happy with how the teflon is going. Smooth as silk.
@@Australian4x4Adventures when U cut the rebate to sit the Teflon in, I assume they sit high enough so they slide against each other? Great vid btw
Good work !!
Thanks mate.
The nail gun makes it go together so easy 😂 I'll need one next time I rebuild
Gotta love a good nail gun.
Fantastic build mate . That’s better than a bought one in my opinion. Bloody well done 👍🍻
Hahaha. Well I like to think I do an alright job.
Next weeks vid has all the real detail in it and showing everyone the finished product.
Great job, thanks for sharing. Could you share a link where you bought the Teflon slides, please?
It’s a placed called regancy plastics in KILSYTH.
