Awesome build mate! Educational, inspirational and entertaining, what a combo. Can't ask for more than that.😊 Yet another suggestion for the slide out table, turn it into a thin drawer and have the table as a drop in from the top (with finger holes to lift it out). The top could be supported by dividers in the drawer, it wouldn't need to be very thick. Use this drawer to store the support leg, air compressor hose and fitting or any other low profile items. Just a thought, but I reckon you'd be stocked just the way it is (I would be).
My son turned up at home about 12 months ago with almost the exact same set up. Now I know where he got the idea lol. I have a new D-max turning up soon and will put an Aluminium Canopy on the tray as soon as I have the cash. Will install similar in there I recon. Oh and I bet Drifta love ya for putting these last couple of Video's out. Love your work mate.
Stumbled across your video of the build for this and loved it. Absolutely fantastic end product. Will definitely be using some of this when I do my ute set up later in the year. Have to also say, your presentation style is fantastic. So informative, easy and enjoyable to watch.
Hahaha. Well tell Luke to stop msg me and telling me to take the vid down 😂. Wasn’t meant to be against drifta and I definitely have nothing against them. Great Aussie company. This is for the ppl who were already going to make their own. And the ppl that can’t make their own now know more about the drifta style of drawers.
Love the top draw access outcome - I’m sure you dreamt about it 😉 also agree that drop slides are overkill with weight and cost - a con really - the absence of ‘amber fluid’ unlike other channels is refreshing as it’s about four wheel touring not drinking till you’re drunk - good work young fellah - awesome weight loss project 👍🏻 John in SA
Thanks buddy. Hahaha. Don’t get me wrong I love a good drink but all in the right time and place. And for me that’s not while on camera. Glad ya liked the vid buddy
I am building my GQ wagon up as a tuff weekender. I was going to just go the easy route and get the kings stuff. But after seeing this and the amount of weight its saved. Ill be giving it ago my self your very informative mate. Amazing job man! Keep up the good videos.
My kings drawers latest me a few years and I didn’t really have any dramas with them. I just wanted something better suited to how I wanted to set the car up. Added bonus was saving a heap of weight. Glad ya liked the vid man. Enjoy the rest of the channel too.
Really good set of videos. I am thinking of doing exactly what you did. I think the fridge being down low, and save space up top for camp chairs/table, etc. And for most part clear rear view for driving. MSA drop down slide looks cool, but I bet you pay a pretty penny for that thing. Thanks for as really good detailed set of videos.
I have a very similar setup. I made it so the fridge slide has only one lock and the table only one lock with the locks on alternating sides. It makes it much easier to get the fridge out.
The handle latches look better than the Drifta ones. I just bought a pair for my drawers. I got steel Dobinsons draws. They look average with the ugly handles and brown aluminium strip around the carpet. So I decided to spruce them up so they look more modern. Good job Steve, they look fantastic.
Wow the weight was a big difference, something i have to look into for the gu. I have removed half of the kings drawers to reduce weight..... now this has convinced me this is the way to go, cheers Steve.
Happy circumstance with that top draw. I'm thinking of building something like this for my custom camping trailer (has more room than the back of your cruiser and all enclosed). Great build
Hi Steve, I am pretty impressed with the build of your drawers etc. I think that you're underestimating your skills by the way. You did make it look easy and I know that it's not.
For drawer runners you can also use smooth laminex strips face to face or the yellow ppe strips used to join chipboard flooring with silicone spray works really well and way cheaper. Cheers.......Pete Ps.....i have drifter drawers that were already in my navarra when i bought it and after seeing your build im now going to rebuild it in the same fashion as yours..A 90ltr fridge freezer on top of the drawer system is not ideal and takes up a lot of useable space and like you said, the drop down slides are very heavy. Great vid and very informative.
Good idea with the laminate. How would that fair over the long run as laminate does ware over time. Haha. Hope ya new build goes well buddy. I’m sure you’ll smash it.
Phenomenal setup mate! I'd never given much thought to teflon runners before but after seeing how effectively yours work, I think I'll be going down that route next time I knock up some drawers.
Super build!! A plethora of great ideas. For the leg under the work surface extension, maybe a round magnet that will attract the tip of the rod (if it's steel), and additional magnets along the length that attract/grab/hold the rod when you place it underneath? No hardware, no fiddling. The best build I've seen, especially in maximizing every square inch of volume. Well done.
I love the fridge slide and table idea, if I have to make my slide I and going to have a little pullout table so I can put stuff on it when loading and unloading the fridge. Cheers for the idea mate.
Mate this is nothing short of amazing! Obviously your trade skills help immensely but to also share that knowledge and give people like me (An I.T Dude) a chance to actually feel like I could tackle this and not waste $900 bucks of materials on a pile of garbage. Absolute props to you sir. Also think you should add your merch store as a link in your videos. I'd happily support it especially for this kind of content. Legend
Hey buddy. Thanks for the kind words. I’m glad it could be helpful to you and hopefully you give it a crack and build your own. I do merch runs on Instagram if ya keen.
9:33 Thanks for the cable chain tip. I've created a couple of bungee cord style hangers for my fridge power cable. It works - for most parts - but looks very untidy. The cable chain set-up looks schmick. I might give it a go.
Top shelf right there Steve. Put the travel buddy on a teflon slide also, then you can move it to the back until you want to use it/access it. Again, great job all round......and yeah, tidy that electrical spaghetti.......slight OCD here, even though you can't see it, doesn't mean it's less dodgy....
Haha. Yeah that wiring is driving me crazy too but I had to get it going so I could use the fridge while at the new build ( house ) Hoping to get some time soon to tidy it all up. I’ll post it on my insta page
As someone who owns a Drifta drawer system I must say this is impressive. Sourcing those Teflon runners is the key! I actually have a Drifta Dual Cab #2 walk around video on my channel if anyone else is interested as well.
Drifta make some cool stuff and this wasn’t designed to take anything away from them. This is for the ppl who were already going to make their own drawers and just needed some more info.
Hey mate great content. I build a very similar set up about six months ago but used the strip out of yellow tongue board. Very cheap and I sprayed with silicon spray. It works great and a much cheaper option. Also you have some wasted space under your table. I have put a aluminium tray in the space and have a moveable aluminium table top that’s removable.
I integrated mine into the draw and has some space on top internally we’re I put bits and bobs, sure you loose a bit of draw but I love it’s got it’s permanent place
Really glad you've gone to the effort of making this video and the how to video mate, I'm in the process of building my GU and keep coming back to the question of "How am I going to set up the rear?" And the major hurdle I keep getting to is what draws to run and how much it'll all cost- I think I'll be having a crack at doing them myself along with wings etc so it's all done how I want it and I learn something in the process, cheers mate!
It’s a major part of any 4wd build and it took me AGES to settle on a design to make everything fit and work the way I wanted it. Having used it on a few trips now, I’m bloody happy with them and the way it’s setup. Easy to get to everything and tons of storage. If ya need and advice on anything just yell out buddy
Just wanted to let you know that I have done a smaller setup as you I drilled a hole in table so the top of the extendapoll came out of the top so I can use it for a plastic bag for a bin and so my cooker dose not fall off the end when oil gets on the top it ..
I just noticed that when you open the draw it drops a little maybe put some leftover teflon on the top side to help Awesome draw setup I have both made my own and bought from store and I must say making my own just seems the best thing to do
Yeah I’ve considered that and still may do it. Because I don’t have a stopper for the drawer coming all the way out. The ply on ply friction as it gets further out stops it from coming all the way out when on a downward lean. So I’m 50/50 on if I wanna do it or not.
Hey m8, just found your channel, I like the way you present the info, and your sense of humor lol I have just bought a 4wd and it's pretty much an open canvas, so I'm on the lookout for ideas. Good job Steve
Very nice how that worked out for you with the top drawer being clear of the top of the tailgate that's what we call them here in the states anyway I don't know what you guys call them but where it clears the top of the tailgate and you can still access your top drawer I would probably go one step farther though and add a a maybe one foot by one foot square trap door in the bottom of that drawer just in case you need to get to something important in the bottom drawer you wouldn't have to take but just a couple things out of the top drawer open your trap and you can reach right into the bottom drawer if there's necessities you know that you need from in there just a thought you never know..
Haha. Yeah I got lucky with that one. I’m probably going to make an internal shelve so I can have two layers of things in the one drawer as they are fairly deep.
If you are putting rails on the top, just make up a cradle for the travel Buddy to sit in/on. A couple of easy cam locks to put it in & remove when not needed. Simples :) Also with slide out table, just hinge the leg underneath.
Great video, and work. From a fellow cabbie, agree with everything you have done. I have very similar drawer construction in an aluminium canopy. Love the logo, top stuff.
If you are going to fit tie down rails to the top, can’t you fix the Travel Buddy onto a base that you can easily tie down to these rails, so it can quickly be removed; you just need to place the Anderson plug somewhere easy to access.
Awesome setup I’m currently planning to do something similar, so is the main framework and fridge slide out of 15mm ply ? And how are the draws holding up with weight in them being 12mm thick ply. Thanks
Hi, great work. I have done something similar using teflon slides. I used sikaflex, but doesn't stick!!! How did you fasten your teflon strips?? Thanks
Wow, mate, what a great bloke you must be. You have inspired me to have a go at building these drawers. I was going to order some from Drifta but with a 6 month backlog waiting time, I researched and then stumbled on your site. Your presentation style is funny and your enthusiasm shines through. Better still you have given us the location of the components - huge timesaver. Now I feel that I have the confidence to build some drawers for my HiAce. Goodonya!!! :)
Exceptional job. Trying to figure out the details for the cable chain. What size did you use and how exactly did you secure it. Would really appreciate some more detail. Cheers
I used a 10mm cable chain. Found on eBay. It’s screwed to the back of the fridge slide so it has that one fixed point on the slide and one to the base of the drawers.
for your travel buddy, mount it sideways further back and get a gull/emu wing so you can access for side. Keep it on drivers side so you can get the metal wing and dont need to see through it.
I’ve got dual Jerry can holders on the back of the car so I can carry 40l outside of the car. Plus the sea to summit water bladder so that’s another 20l in the foot well of the car. I think that’s enough water storage.
Absolutely love your set up. Well done. Love your presentation style as well. I'm looking at building a similar style drawers and slide for my LRD4. Question: did you run Teflon runners on the bottom of the drawers and top of the drawer base (Teflon on Teflon)?. Thanks Champ. 👍
Loved it so much I built my own. Thanks for the detailed walkthrough of the build it was definitely a great help. I've just spent ten weeks on the road going "tip to tip" - Cape York to Wilsons Prom and the drawers were perfect for our purposes. One question though: I copied almost everything with relevant customisations for my setup, when I got to the part of fixing the Teflon strips it suddenly struck me that I had no idea what type of Silicon you used, what on earth is going to stick to Teflon?? I asked at the local Bunnings and ended up just taking a guess and using a roofing Silicon. This was the only failing for the build, about half way through the trip the teflon strips started separating (I put 6mm thick strips recessed a couple of mm's into the side of the drawer as well as the strips on the side of the cabinet that you used) It was the strips on the side of the drawers that started separating and have eventually fallen off. I screwed the teflon into the Cabinet base and bottom of the drawers as well as applying a bead of silicon but the side strips are thinner (6mm vs 10mm) so I used silicon alone. I'm about to hit the road again and I'd love to find out what you used and hear if your strips have held with silicon alone. Thanks again, As I said above the detailed walkthrough of the build helped me hugely, I'm definitely not a cabinet maker but following your tips at each stage made the build possible.🙂
Hey mate. Great to hear the video helped you make something that’s worked so well for you. I used roofing silicon as well but it lasted almost two years for me before I had one come loose. From that I done some research and found that automotive sikaflex is the best to use on it as it sticks to pretty much anything. To help it stick just scuff up the side your sticking down to help give it some more surface area to stick too.
Depends on what you want but what you have built would probably be around 2.5k. but then you need to add bits like your battery box and air fittings etc. I really like those draw handle/latches.
Again, what an excellent video. Well presented, fast pace, full of lots of info. Will be picking up our Ineos Grenadier in August so will have most of the gear made prior. Only question - what silicon did you use to stick the Teflon down with?
Thanks Steve - very useful and almost identical to the set-up I'm a out to start. Just of of curiosity though, I've gone with 4mm teflon, 30mm on the carcass bottom and the wall, 20mm on the drawer bottom and sides, which I'll rebate 1-2mm. I saw you've used 6mm (I think that's what it ended up being) and wondered whether on hindsight I should have used the thicker stuff. Just wondering if in your experience the 4mm teflon (rebated 1mm on each surface so 6mm gap between ply surfaces) will suffice. Or should I go with the thicker option?
What I got out of this is, what Drifta are charging for their draw systems is very reasonable. I am not a cabinet maker so my skills are not good enough for the precise building of these draws.
Was the 15mm base ply and 12mm carcass and draws strong enough now that you have used them for a while? Has anything sagged or loosened up? Would you go thicker, thinner or the same if you built them again?
Cool vid, I made my own about a month ago and used strips of yellow poly cable feeder that sparkies use to run cable, $5 for 3.6m. I've got about 40kg in my draw and slides easy.
Hey man, cool videos. I watched the build one as well. I was just wondering how you go with pretty tight clearance around the ventilation holes on the fridge? The manual states: Your unit requires good ventilation, especially around the vents of the refrigerator; allow a gap of at least 100 mm around all vents. Do you reckon there is any risk of overheating?
Hey mate. Thanks for watching. The vents wrap around the front as well which helps them a lot but on super hot days I have noticed it does struggle a little so drilling some 50mm holes would help to open up some air flow
Great build mate. After a year, is the original silicon/Sikaflex still holding the Teflon strips in? Would you change anything if you had your time again? (I’m about to build my own). Thanks!
Hey mate. Yeah 12 months on and everything’s still holding. Teflon included. Only design thing I would change is to make the top drawer a separate unit that could be removed for storage of larger things for my day to day life. So I’d have one drawer and the fridge permanently in. And the second drawer would be some latches or something to remove it when not needed.
Very thorough run-down on this project - well done. I was really surprised with the weight reduction compared to your previous set-up. Thanks for going to the trouble to cover this in detail so anyone inspired to build their own have a comprehensive guide to help them. Cheers Lee
Thanks buddy. I really do hope that it helps some ppl make the jump to make their own

Yet another suggestion for the slide out table, turn it into a thin drawer and have the table as a drop in from the top (with finger holes to lift it out).
The top could be supported by dividers in the drawer, it wouldn't need to be very thick. Use this drawer to store the support leg, air compressor hose and fitting or any other low profile items. Just a thought, but I reckon you'd be stocked just the way it is (I would be).

If you are putting rails on the top, just make up a cradle for the travel Buddy to sit in/on. A couple of easy cam locks to put it in & remove when not needed.
Simples :) Also with slide out table, just hinge the leg underneath.
Awesome job on the build mate!
Thanks mate.
Great video, and work. From a fellow cabbie, agree with everything you have done. I have very similar drawer construction in an aluminium canopy. Love the logo, top stuff.
Haha. Thanks buddy.
The I am surprised at how many cabbys have commented.
And what surprised me more no one bagged me out for anything 😆
Great video dude. Thanks for the heads up of where to get the odds and ends.
No dramas at all. Hopefully it helps ppl out.
If you are going to fit tie down rails to the top, can’t you fix the Travel Buddy onto a base that you can easily tie down to these rails, so it can quickly be removed; you just need to place the Anderson plug somewhere easy to access.
Great set-up 👍 nice video learned some good ideas 💡 👍 cheers rick from Perth, Australia 🇦🇺
Great presentation Steve.
Thanks mate.
That was lucky, Regency Plastics is only 1 km away.👍👍👍
Mate top work looks awesome and another top video👍👍👍
Thanks buddy
Awesome setup
I’m currently planning to do something similar, so is the main framework and fridge slide out of 15mm ply ?
And how are the draws holding up with weight in them
being 12mm thick ply.
Thanks
Hi, great work. I have done something similar using teflon slides. I used sikaflex, but doesn't stick!!! How did you fasten your teflon strips??
Thanks
Cleve bloke, that table under the fridge is awesome
They came up brilliant Steve, If I didn't have drifta already Id be keen on them for sure. You've done an awesome Jobe mate. Good work. Cheers Steve
Thanks buddy.
I’m happy with them. Just as I’d be happy if I had a drifta set.
Make an adjustable leg with a lockable hinge that folds and stores under the table. Well that's my plan when I finally get my 4wd.
Dude these vids were actually sick. Cheers for all the info
You are more then welcome buddy
Wow that’s a great set up!!! I’m only building a fridge slide and table slide haha
Goodonya!!! :)
6 month wait, you're joking right?
Stevo, youre a bloody legend mate. Love your work. Easily one of the best youtubers. Sensational content. #legend
Hahaha. You’re far to kind buddy.
Love ya work knackers, very nice indeed..
Thanks mate
Suggest mounting the travel buddy on a right so tucks near the window. Little shelf (wing) the same height as the top.
Ahh yeah. So it would sit almost above where the inverter is?
@@Australian4x4Adventures yup spot on, little pain getting to it but can from rear or rear RH Door.
I would recommend having the travel bud on like a setup like a tripod facer plate system so it can be easy removed and secured. Hope that helps mate
For your Travel Buddy, have you tried using knob screws/bolts to hold it in place? Then it can be removed quickly without using any tools.
I think the nuts would be too big. There’s bugga all clearance
Thanks for sharing and explaining your methods. Appreciated! Keep it up.
No dramas at all buddy. Happy to help where I can.
Amazing job! Does the lack of slides cause any rattling ?
Nah no rattles at all from the system. That’s why I put the Teflon on the side as well to help keep it tight ish
Love the videos mate. Great project. The draws came out looking amazing. Love your presenting aswell. Bloody funny to watch.
Keep it up
Cheers 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Cheers buddy.
I’m just being me on camera. Bit stupid most of the time 😂
Australian 4x4 Adventures that’s what makes it so good I reckon. Your a true Aussie larrikin.
You’re too kind. 🙏🙏🙏
for your travel buddy, mount it sideways further back and get a gull/emu wing so you can access for side. Keep it on drivers side so you can get the metal wing and dont need to see through it.
and thanks for the run through...
I’ve thought of the gull wing but they are bloody pricey.
Ripper setup... cheers for sharing...
You are more then welcome my friend
you can use Yellow Tongue for the Teflon slides works just as well and cheaper
I did think of that but I just wanted to try the real thing.
@@Australian4x4Adventures I haven’t spread my slides yet good idea with the zipper spray 👍
A pleasure to watch mate! Just stumbled upon your channel. Good work👍👍
good work....rear passenger side window....handy to get a view out of it in traffic....what about water?
I’ve got dual Jerry can holders on the back of the car so I can carry 40l outside of the car.
Plus the sea to summit water bladder so that’s another 20l in the foot well of the car.
I think that’s enough water storage.
Absolutely love your set up. Well done. Love your presentation style as well. I'm looking at building a similar style drawers and slide for my LRD4. Question: did you run Teflon runners on the bottom of the drawers and top of the drawer base (Teflon on Teflon)?. Thanks Champ. 👍
Hey. Thanks for watching. Yep. It’s Teflon on Teflon.
@@Australian4x4Adventures Thanks I'll give it a go and let you know how it goes.
Pretty interesting seeing the price breakdown and how it compares to companies like...drifta.
I honestly don’t even know what drifta drawers are worth. I never asked the for a price.
Roofing silicon.
Hey mate. I hit the link to buy some teflon slides but can't see the product on their website. Do you have another link at all?
Best to give them a call. They know about my video and will know what to give you.
You remind me of jock from 4wd action haha thanks for the ideas too am planing on making my own setup
Hahaha. Thanks mate. I’ve been told that a few times.
@@Australian4x4Adventures good stuff! Enjoy mate keep up the good work
Great video mate, love all the details you give to help others out.
impressive job champion
Thanks buddy.
What I got out of this is, what Drifta are charging for their draw systems is very reasonable. I am not a cabinet maker so my skills are not good enough for the precise building of these draws.
awesome mate! i have to say i am very impressed with the final product!
keep up the awesome work mate
Thanks mate. Appreciate the kind words.
My mates dad made drawers and use candle wax to make it slide then went to laminex slides. Started 30 years ago in his 4wd.
Yeah I’ve seen that done before in the past. Can work well. And cheap too
Awesome set-up
FYI mate, had a Buddy oven mounted directly to the carpet for 5 yrs no probs at all 👍👍
I drilled the little feet on mine out for my last setup so it would of been steel straight on the carpet.
Yep, thats how mine is
Was the 15mm base ply and 12mm carcass and draws strong enough now that you have used them for a while? Has anything sagged or loosened up? Would you go thicker, thinner or the same if you built them again?
Cool vid, I made my own about a month ago and used strips of yellow poly cable feeder that sparkies use to run cable, $5 for 3.6m. I've got about 40kg in my draw and slides easy.
I was going to use that but wanted to try the real thing
Yellow toung is definitely a good substitute
Unreal job 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks mate
If you put the travel buddy at the other end of the drawers and access it from the back passenger door, will reduce the dead space behind it.
Yeah I had it that way in my last setup and I think it’s prolly the best way still. I’ll end up changing it back that way I think.
Hey man, cool videos. I watched the build one as well. I was just wondering how you go with pretty tight clearance around the ventilation holes on the fridge? The manual states:
Your unit requires good ventilation, especially
around the vents of the refrigerator; allow a
gap of at least 100 mm around all vents.
Do you reckon there is any risk of overheating?
Hey mate. Thanks for watching. The vents wrap around the front as well which helps them a lot but on super hot days I have noticed it does struggle a little so drilling some 50mm holes would help to open up some air flow
Looking good Steven, well done 👏
Thanks buddy. I’m happy with them.
mint work and cheers for the build series, legend!
No probs buddy. Glad you liked it.
@@Australian4x4Adventures excellent. You’ve inspired me, off to the shed I go.
Great job! Thank you! Really enjoyed the video and the how to!
Wing nuts on the travel buddy for quick release 😉
That’s not a bad idea.
