SUCH an overlooked but critically important feature is the layout of those damn infotainment systems and deletion of tactile knobs and buttons! I HATE HATE HATE having look away and hunt simply to adjust a basic function in a vehicle. Thanks for Screen Wars review!!!

I own a 2nd gen Colorado Z71 and one of the things I love about it is the big bold buttons. The new 3rd gen makes me sick looking at the lack of light switch, heated seats/steering wheel switches. The deletion of switches is disgusting. As much as I like the exterior of the new Colorado probably better than any of the other brands right now, I despise the dash and the lack of switches. I won't be buying a gen 3 Colorado.

Butter smooth 9 speed transmission. Fully boxed ladder frame. Surround view cameras. Electronic rear locker. Bam. What more can ya ask for? $39,999 before tax is what I paid 2 months ago. turbo 4 deez nuts!

So’ mac, you purchased a “deal,” Frontier is a good mid sized pickup, it is not a Ridgeline. My nephew shopped Frontier, Tacoma, bought a Black Edition Ridgeline, considerably more money than the Frontier, less money than an comparably equipped Tacoma. Family, extended family, own 5 Ridgelines, 11 Hondas overall😊

When you do your poll, you need to first ask poll takers to rank the importance of each of the categories you reviewed. For example, I don’t ever tow, so a low score on towing from me won’t tell you much about how I feel about who has the best towing system. It will only muddy interpretation of your results. Ranking categories will also tell you something about how your viewers use their trucks to some degree.

Before the Maverick was introduced, I had my eye on the Ranger. Two things that kept me from purchasing a midsized truck were: 1. Height and 2. Budget. I needed a truck, and the Maverick fits my needs and wallet.

Because of your evaluations of mid-sized trucks I just bought a new Nissan Frontier SV 4x4 long bed. I bought the Frontier because of the reliability and dependability of the truck, I bought this because it doesn't have a turbo, it doesn't have cylinder deactivation, and I haven't seen a bunch of recalls on this naturally aspirated V6 engine. Within the first hundred miles I already got 22.6 mpg. in city driving. I am interested in finding out what it is going to do when I take a trip in it. You put the specifications of all these trucks in the spotlight for me to make a judgement call on what I should buy. Because I am a large guy the room I have in the Frontier is much better in the front seat than the rest and I looked at all of them to give them a fair comparison. I did not look at the Honda Ridgeline or the Hyundai Santa Cruz because they just didn't interest me. Thank you for all your videos because besides the entertainment value they provide, they also help people make smart decisions on what best suits them.

I own a 2022 Pro-4X, I wished they had that to compare instead of the hardbody package. I know prices have gone up a bit but for the same money as what they tested I got a fully loaded truck; 9" screen, sun roof, leather, sound system, rear locker, skid plates, Bilstein suspension. I would buy it again over any of the other trucks tested. If you're looking for an honest truck and find the tech gimmicks just that, it's the one for you.

And also, I'm not sure if I would be comfortable rock climbing with my brand new 60K off-road truck/SUV so who am kidding. If I really want to go off-roading I would just buy an used 2010 Jeep Wrangler and tow it with my super comfortable Ridgeline truck.

I have a gladiator, so of course I'm going to vote for it. But you can get gladiators way cheaper than that mojave. It's always a trade off for off road capability. I hope as you get ready to do the off road segment, you put all the trucks on a lift. You can talk about approach angles all you want, but when you look at how the gladiator oil pan is protected by being up above the axle and further back, the alternator is up on top so it doesn't get drug through every mud crossing, durable solid axles, etc. Fundamentals vs party tricks.

Exceptional video regarding the mid-size truck segment. Thank you for all the hard work. I am not the least bit brand loyal. And, I recognize the importance of “function” in the truck segment. I have always favored “reliability” in my vehicle transactions. But, with a truck, function is a critical variable. I am buying at the end of 2024. What functional needs do I have? Given we tow a 2,900 lb camper a minimum of 4,000 miles per year (and even more in the future), I want the function of 5,000 lbs or more of tow capacity. I also want the ability to haul 1,500 lbs or more of payload (camping gear, shell, tongue weight, passengers, pets, etc.). Historically, I highly value reliability and safety. I have not had a car payment since 2014 and all three of our vehicles have 145,000 miles; 162,000 miles (tow vehicle is a midsize V8 SUV); and, 205,000 miles. All three are 2008 or 2009 models. So, assuming the truck can perform the function I want and need, I highly value reliability. Ideally, I highly value a truck that I can drive for 15 or more years covering 150,000 to 200,000 miles with only minor blips in addition to routine maintenance. I also value reliability. I want 5 star crash ratings, not 3s. I want the appropriate safety systems as well. We do no major off-roading, but want AWD or 4WD for winter driving and light off-reading (forest service roads while camping, hiking, exploring, etc.). Given my needs and wants, I am leaning toward the Ridgeline, probably TrailSport or Black Edition for daily driving, over the road comfort and manners, space, and plenty of function for what I need along with solid reliability and safety ratings. On the other hand, what if we get a slightly larger camper in a few years? It would be nice to not have to buy another truck. In this case, I completely understand the importance of additional function. The Ranger and GM twins make a compelling case. Even the Gladiator in Sport S trim properly configured is an option. I am a fan of both the Tacoma and Frontier, but I am just not impressed with their insufficient payload numbers for my needs. However, despite the Ridgeline possibly being my pick for my needs and wants, I don’t think it is the “best” midsize truck in 2024. Obviously, the Tacoma is a strong contender. The Frontier is a simple old school alternative to the Tacoma. However, their pedestrian payload numbers are just not impressive, thus neither can be the best, imo. The Colorado/Canyon are highly capable and functional and the best looking trucks in my opinion and vastly improved over the sub-mediocre previous generation (too unreliable). I am a Gladiator fan, but its focus on off-road worthiness and the Jeep being the most unreliable marquee prevents me from thinking of it as the “best” midsize truck. I learned to drive on a 1968 Jeep J10 Gladiator full-size pickup, so it is a sentimental favorite for me. That leaves the Ranger. The reintroduction of the Ranger in 2019 provided us with a well-balanced functional but somewhat dated truck with an ordinary exterior. The 2024 Ranger has an improved exterior (still dated imo) and a much improved interior along with lots of functionality (tow capacity, payload, etc.), engine choices, etc. If I had to pick the “best” midsize truck in 2024, it would probably be the Ford Ranger. I would love to own one, but still objectively and subjectively trying to determine if it or one of the other mid-size trucks will end up in my driveway at the end of Fall. Ironically, my budget is about $45K and is consistent with the prices of these trucks (not the Gladiator Mojave, but the Gladiator could be priced differently and actually be better at towing and hauling compared to the Mojave). One last variable, at $45K plus/minus $2,500, I may also consider a base trim 1/2 ton truck lightly optioned as a functional alternative to a mid-size truck. I prefer the size and proportions of a midsize truck, but a lightly optioned 1/2 ton truck offers superior functionality at about the same price. LOL, more truck research and TFL Talks/Trucks videos are needed! ;)

If I had $45K to drop on a truck, it would be the Ranger. I think it would be the best fit for my lifestyle and features I need for the area that I live in. The problem is I don't have $45K to drop on a truck.
I have to admit I am still in sticker shock at the prices of the mid-size trucks and vehicles in general. The last new vehicle I bought was a 2004 F-150 XLT "truck of the year" for $27K; I drove it for 17 years without any complaints, I sold it a year ago and I miss not having a pick-up.

surprised the Ridgeline did so well at high altitude because turbos are supposed to excel there - I wonder if the Ridgeline advantage would grow as altitude normalizes I also remember one test in Death Valley found the Ridgeline did the best of the trucks tested as its shocks did not leak/get destroyed by the punishing terrain over distance and this included a Jeep and Toyota truck - only the Honda did not have shock failure

Something that drives me nuts about these determinations is that crash test safety ratings are never included in the calculus. Granted, those won’t be available until July or so for the new ‘24 models, but that is the ultimate determining factor for me, even though my purchase will be for an overlanding build. Still have to drive on the roads with all the crazies and the recent doubling in national highway mortalities to get to the trail. I’m really hoping Tacoma and Ranger have made significant improvements, and perhaps even the Gladiator will be acceptable with the new airbags (a man can dream).

I wouild also look at a side by side apples to apples price comparison as to comparably equipped vehicles like each one has power seats, similar sized screens, rear locker, etc along with towing and payload to get which is the best value. At this point to, other than the Frontier and maybe the Chevy the reliability of the Ford and Toyota remain to be seen as they are basically all new. The last time Toyota redid the Tacoma they had a lot of issues for a couple years - I think was the 2015 - 2016 models. They did work them out though.

The new Ranger seems way more dialed in. But… I have a 2023 2.7 Bronco 2DR OB in the garage so no new Ranger for me. The F150 is still looking and running great, and she’s been paid off for years. I have the Nissan info system in a new a Pro-4x Titan which has more options than the one hear, and it works great even though it's old school. It has more camera features than my friends brand new fancy BMW. With that being said, I did not care for the steering wheel in the Frontier; they would need to fix that before I would buy it. All the Fords I drove last year had cheap interiors, so hopefully, they improved it on the new model. If I were to buy one right this minute, 1st would be the Gladiator Rubicon or Willys (depending on budget). I drove the 2023 and almost bought it, but i decided i wanted the room in a full-size truck. The second would be Chevy/GMC, but we couldn't find one to test drive, so maybe that would change if I drove it. I do not like the headlight control location on the info system, which is one of the reasons it comes in second.

I have actually been shopping for a midsize truck as a new tow rig for my camper the last few months and just bought one this week. I ended up getting the frontier for 3 main reasons and 1 side reason. The biggest reason why I went with the Frontier is the 6ft bed and the only other option was the Tacoma and that brings me to the side reason, I went to 3 Toyota dealerships in the state and dealers should not talk to me at all, I even went in and ask to talk to one but still could not talk one. That said I did finally find a taco to sit in and that 32in TV in the dash took that off the short list. the last thing is I do not want a turbo, that said if there wasnt the other two issues with the taco i probably would have over looked that even. In the end of the day these are truck not family cars, If the manufactures want to market them for family luxury use then great but they need to still offer the models for truck use, a 5ft bed is useless. i traded in my Rebel for the Frontier in part because I finally got to the point were the 5.5ft be was just too short. The other thing that they need to keep in mind is that there are people that are sensitive to light and these big screens really mess with people, my Rebel had the 8in uconnect system and even that at it lowest brightness was too bright for me to drive much at night with out getting headaches, the only reason i was able to get away with it was because i could turn off the screen.

I struggled to come to a decision on a mid-sized truck between the Colorado and the Ranger as I like both trucks. The trade-offs between the two was mostly in minor options.
I was leaning toward the Colorado because I could get a sunroof. But in the end, I went with the Ranger mainly because of the seats. The cloth used in the Ranger is much nicer, softer, and more comfortable, and I could get it in the sandstone color. The cloth seats in the Colorado is rough and kind of stiff, and it offers black only interior which absorbs heat in hotter climates. I live in Texas, so I do not like all black interiors or leather for that reason.
Plus the Ranger offers power seats with height adjustment for both driver and front passenger seats. The Colorado does not offer height adjustment for the front passenger seat (manual or power) at any trim level. Come on GM, you basically lost a sale over that alone.

Tacoma is all in all my favorite all around truck, but the trim levels I like are priced close to the Ranger Raptor, which is my favorite mid-size truck if the money was not an issue.
