Flash was my first 3.75 inch Joe. And while I loved the realistic nature of the 1982 G.I.Joe toy line, I also enjoyed the science fiction aspects thrown in as they seemed like they were very close to reality.

I loved Flash. My mom drove me around to four different stores on a Saturday until I found the SABG version 1.5. Flash was not used in actual combat in my team. He was used for entry into, or egress from, an enemy stronghold (cardboard box). He was also used as a security camera killer; the laser would cause the camera to overheat, and stop recording for a short time. Great time for the team to pass. He also could deflate tires with no evidence left behind but a pinhole caused by the laser. He was very useful.

By far my favorite G.I.Joe. Got him in 1983, the battle arm, swivel grip version. He was a great looking action figure. The red padding on the uniform just caught my eye, but your padding joke caught me off guard. Although gross, the joke was humorous. He had my favorite head sculpt, kind of a regal look, and the same head as my 2nd favorite figure Steeler. I know the original 13 was not the most exciting action figures ever produced, but I really remember the excitement of the new super articulated 3 3/4 " figures. Hey, thanks for sharing.

I think calling Flash a reuse is unfair to him. I always envisioned Steeler and Grand Slam as the reuse characters, especially Grand Slam, because they were the vehicle drivers.
I also think that Flash's laser rifle is the one closest to potentially being realistic. He's not off shooting laser beams as if they were bullets - he's got a very specific role that he plays.
The 1982 Flash was also my first GI Joe. I received it as a gift for my birthday and thought it a strange gift.
When the better one came out the next year I bought that one so they could "fight" each other over dominance.
Flash is the only GI Joe Action figures I have ever owned.
I was never much of a GI Joe Fan, my dad was on an active Green Beret "A" team growing up and I was friends with many "GI Joes". Maybe that is why.
Plus we did not have cable and I preferred old black and white movies on PBS to cartoons.
It was not until it was my time to join the Army myself that I picked the Light Infantry to start.. then Rangers and spent the rest of 18 years on a 5th Group Special Forces "A" team.
I joined the Light Infantry for it's merits and also because Flash was Infantry. "Go Joe!" lol
In a very real way I became the action figure I was given when I was 10.

Excellent review, HoodedCobraCommander788. I, too have both the swivel and the straight armed versions. Although my first (and favorite) original Joe was Grunt, I did appreciate the fact that his specialty did add a multi-dimensional element of sci-fi to help make GI Joe a stronger fighting force. I looked at his specialty as, "a new development of super-powered high technology that assisted the US Army with carrying on it's mission to end terrorism and foil the enemy." Yeah, I know...you can tell I was a very imaginative kid, haha. Keep these reviews coming, they're really good for us collectors.
@HCC788 All of the 1.5 Joe belt buckles, except for Scarlett's, are based on the early 80s Hasbro trademark House. Look it up.

I never liked how the swivel arm version had the painted on pads. Wish they would have just done what they did with the straight arm version. Also, never made sense that he was a laser trooper. They should have made him a flame thrower operator.

+Silent Wobby Thanks! I suspect they went with the painted patches on the Swivel Arm version because they hoped to use the upper arms for other figures. They did eventually use the entire arms for Steel Brigade.

Awesome review mate. My older brother has Flash when we was kids.
My first G.I. Joe figure. Then it was Snake Eyes. I bought Flash because of the visored helmet and cool laser rifle. Bought the Jet pack because it was "his"

In the IDW hardcover Complete Collections they correct the text in issue 50 to say "Flash" instead of "Zap." I thought that was a nice touch.

I like Anthony Gambello. I had an idea of doing a set up of revamped Original 13 updates....sadly there is a stunning lack of Short Fuze and Zap updates, and Breaker is the movie version. I'd be OK including him if he didn't have a new name and character, which isn't whiney ethno switching, he's literally not the Breaker from the 80s. Even though Hawk dyed his hair brown, he was still Clayton Abernathy.
I always thought of gi joe as like James Bond or Metal Gear, military based with sci fi mixed in.
awesome review as always I think this guy was like my fifth or sixth figure not sure.. but yea he was one of those ones that I didn't play with much unless I needed a cutting tool...LOL... but still he isn't such a bad figure5 though the padding was loud enough to go make him a easy target

Sweet review! Flash was one of the first Joe's I remember getting. He did get tossed to the side over more popular characters like Snake Eyes, Scarlet and Stalker.
Nice review. I never owned this one as a kid, but I thought he looked cool. The Laser Rifle issue never bothered me, when it came to Joes. What bothered me more were the bright awful colors that were used later on in the series.

Yes. 1982 straight arm Flash was my first Joe and a long time favorite. He (along with some help from Destro) was the Joe that lured me away from Star Wars in 1983.

Flash seems like a silly character, however, there is a way to save him.
Today, we have laser technology. It's not the "pew pew" kind, but a precise and invisible heat beam that are using in various applications, even knocking down missiles.
Flash could have a long range laser weapon used for surgical strikes to dismantle or destroy sensitive equipment. There are 50 .cal sniper weapons out there used to take out devices such as electrical boxes or other critical infrastructure, but the 50 .cal could potentially give the shooter's position away. A laser sniper weapon could do the same, but in a more stealthy way. It also wouldn't be obvious that the device was "shot". It will just appear to be a break down.
Flash's main weapon would some standard ballistic weapon, but when he gets into position, he hauls out the laser, calculates the distance so he knows how much juice to use, and then shoots and holds the invisible beam on his target until the he succeeds in disabling/destroying his target.
He would not be using it on people.
Flash was my first Joe, and I actually liked his red pads, I didn't like your guy Breaker, lol, Larry should've had Grand Slam were his silver pads, then maybe he wouldn't have gotten them mixed up.😅👍🏽
