This figure was one of my favorites as a kid. I always used the "grenade" launcher as a sonic weapon. That he'd be sending hordes of Cobra Troops several feet in the air.
He reminds me of Captain Freedom (Jesse Ventura) from The Running Man movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.😁
Literally just watched The Running Man
@@FitnFire 😁👍
Those leg pads were a brave fashion choice.
This is an example of a figure that would look great with the Classified Tripwire treatment with interchangeable uniform parts so you could do his original and this version at once. Lets just not make it a Pulse exclusive this time.
My brother had this one when we were kids, and I always thought it was a great update to the OG13 character, unlike '91 Grunt. My brother had the gray weapons set, and while the silver variant obviously matched Zap's sliver paint apps, I'm partial to the gray, both for nostalgia reasons, and because I like that the gray "pistol" matches the gray battlefield robot (we never used it as backpack -- the treads are there for a reason!). And yeah -- definitely Clark Gable. We knew that even as kids, and, frankly, didn't give a damn.
I like the music during the reviews now!
I remember this fellow fondly, as do quite a few of the commenters apparently. Thanks for the content
Great video! Zap looks like he has borrowed those silver boots from the band KISS
Zap is definitely one of the figures that I should have bought in 1992 and 1993. The problem was that all the special teams, minus the Ninja Force, cost considerably more new back in the early 1990s.
I bought mine in late 1991. I never had the earlier Zap so this was my Zap. I voted Zap and I'm not disappointed. Thanks for a great year and a great review to end the year on.
10 years!
Bring on 10 more :)
I really dig this version of Zap. Great review mate.
What a cool episode. I love that the backpack is a robot with a gun on top.
That was a nice one.
Also, thanks for the ten years Bryan!!!
I remember playing a lot with this action figure 👌.
I Liked his accessories 💪🏼
Congrats on 10 years man!
Clark Gable, I always saw him as Raul Julia from the Addams family in particular
Looking at Raul’s wiki page his name was “Raul Rafael Julia” the “Rafael J” in Zaps file name paired with that moustache makes me think it was definitely intended to be inspired by him
Interesting you bring this up, because since Raul Julia was Puerto Rican, to me at least, Zap always seemed like he is from either Cuban or Puerto Rican ancestry. Some people in the US have this tendency of directly associating Latino with Mexican and think of both as interchangeable, and this is just not accurate.
Zap was my first Joe. Thank you for all the reviews Commander!!! Happy holidays to all and Happy New Years. Yo Joe!!!
I don't remember seeing this figure in store where I lived so i can't contribute to year release ha ha. The only figures i have now that fit in the sound making subset are Hawk and Overkill. If I had any of the sonic fighter figures I would use the backpack as an accessory because it really makes sense to do so. Falcon's is a definite backpack ha ha. I didn't know Zap was a bobblehead ha ha. I like it when the characters get a promotion as the years move forward.
Sonic Viper is maybe my fav Joe ever, would love to see a review!
John Earl is a talented guy.
Zap and Flash were the first two joes i had !
The 90s versions of guys like Grunt and Zap were way better. Thanks for another great clip HCC Merry Xmas
There were some distinctions between the Sonic Fighters and Super Sonic Fighters lines. The Sonic fighters were all repainted figures and weapons, and the backpacks were mainly just backpacks and only played sounds. The Super Sonic Fighters were new molds except for Falcon and Road Pig, and had all new accessories. The backpacks had little lights as well as the sounds, and most of them had some "function" beyond just being a backpack like Zap's being a drone, or Major Bludd's being a jetpack.
Given the ambiguity over the 1991/1992 release of the Super Sonic Fighters, my guess is that as soon as Hasbro acquired the sound technology they pushed out the Sonic Fighter's line using repaints with just the new sound backpacks to get something on the market. Then they took the time to actually develop the theme with the Super Sonic Line, thus its delay until late 1991/early 1992. That is just a wild guess/extrapolation of the situation though, I have no actual factual knowledge of what happened. Dan Klingensmith, if you're reading this, there's a question for you to ask your Hasbro contacts for the next book.
Him and doc was my first gijoes
One important distinction between artillery and the kinds of infantry tube-launched rockets and missiles we'd associate with Zap is that artillery tends to fire in an arc at a target it can't see directly. The infantry version of artillery would be a mortar.
I do wish this V2 had less silver - the sculpt itself is solid.
sonic fighters are just sound. super sonic fighters are sound and those lights on the pack.
😎👍
Double Barrelled isn't technically a misspelling. There used to be a rule that you were supposed to double the final consonant in a word ending in one vowel and one consonant before adding suffixes like -ed. Thus rule is generally ignored now, but it's not wrong.
I had the original Zap. Part of the hand broke off because the bazooka handle was to thick for the hand.
"Barrelled" isn't really misspelled, it's just more common with one L in US English. UK English usage is almost entirely two Ls.
I might get him. You convinced me.
This figure with the head if Battle Corps Bludd made one killer Python Patrol Bludd in 2003.
Great review! I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday season! I can't wait to see what you have for us in the new year!
I picked up this figure second hand with no idea who the character was, in my head canon he was a cobra or even a mercenary.
The weapon reminds me of HEAT Vipers
I never had that version of Zap but I did have the reuse of that body that they used for the Joecon Python patrol Major Bludd and the over all design of it is really cool. I do agree that the silver is a bit over kill on the og like you said it would been nicer with it just relegated to the plates only , I do have to laugh that when they did use the same body for joecon they reused some the accessories too the gun from the pack (but there was no pack with bludd) and the grenade launcher but they omitted the cover part
That original head sculpt to me looks like Hugo Weaving lol
Agent Smith multiplied.
Nice video, when are you going to do Sonic Fighters Law? Even though Hasbro dropped the ball not making Order come with him, that's still a awesome figure!👍🏾
I hope you can review the comic book 3 pack figures. Cheers
I never had Zap.
IMHO, he looks like Andy Griffith with a mustache…
He can fly a helicopter, like he did in GI Joe #1
They should have modeled his likeness from Scott Baio in the movie Zapped!
Lot's to like, but all the silver sure is cutting down on his ability to conceal himself in a fight.
I was always more drawn to the 82 guys over quite a lot of the rest of the line. Once teal and neon became common design choices I clung tighter to my green, brown, and occasionally tan stuff. '82 was my favorite over all lineup. As a side note I know quite a few Hispanic people that easily be mistaken/pass as Caucasian. Shipwreck(as much as I dislike him) gets the same deal supposed to be Hispanic looks Caucasian.
My dad, (I'm a young 'Joe fan,) gets it in reverse, as he's mostly Caucasian but can get mistaken for Hispanic sometimes. (He blames his height.)
My father was also commonly thought (by students in my class) as Hispanic because he had a rather dark skin tone. I wish characters like Zap, Shipwreck and Spirit were more realistic in appearance (it would would be a nice change from the two tones commonly used in the line).
The silver on the legs don't look great, otherwise he looks pretty good.
The tear across the artwork is doubly unfortunate, because it makes it look like part of the gimmick is "PUSh BUTT".
😂
So, the question is "were the updates to the 1982 Joes worthy updates to the 1982 Joes?" Say that 5 times fast.
gonna have to check The Art of G.I.JOE: A Real American Hero Omnibus Hardcover for the official year release.
Immediately after you said the 1982 figures were not good, the 7-year-old kid in me wearing rose-colored glasses was like, "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!" But as you proceeded to explain why, it was blatantly obvious...my nostalgia just blinded me to the truth. And now I know...so half the battle is won. Thanks for another year of fantastic videos!
Not a big fan of the music in the background
Algorithm bump comment and question.
You often say the ‘82 figures don’t use “original parts” or “reuse” parts. With respect, I disagree. I offer that all 1982 parts are original and used for the first time in 1982. Rather, most of the parts were shared, and not unique. If I am wrong I apologize.
Your music was super trippy....and a little distracting. We just need your insight and good humor...chuck the elevator music, my friend!
