Zap was always part of my wounded Gi joes. Masking Tape with red marker as a bandage. My dad bought me Zap at a western Auto here in town. I broke his thumb off the second I took him out of the package and tried to set his bazooka. After that he became a permanent casualty.

Zap will always be special to me as the 1983 thick handle was my very first G.I. Joe. And surprisingly survives intact and complete to this day (I was always careful and gentle with my toys).

Very nice review of G.I. Joe (1983/1983) Zap. This is definitely a must have for all dedicated vintage 1982 - 1994 G.I. Joe action figure collectors.

I remember having Zap, but I don't remember playing with the figure that much. I believe it's because there was really nothing about him that stood out. The same with Grunt. Snake-Eyes was the first figure my brother and I got. I remember thinking he was apart of Cobra because of the name. Then I picked up issue three of the comic book series and learned he was a G.I. Joe member. As far as the mustache goes, a little paint and a very small brush fixes that. I had a friend who did that. Back then, we didn't think about resell value or collectible status. We were kids, they were toys. We played with them. lol.

"Zap" was the first GI Joe figure I bought. I got him at Service Merchandise on the last day of school in fifth grade (summer 1982). It took me until Christmas day of 82' to complete the entire V1 line of figures and vehicles (and managed to wrangle duplicate VAMPS, RAMS and Snake Eye figures!).

Zap wasn't named after Zapped!, but the re-release of the figure was inspired by the 1990 sequel Zapped Again!

The code name most likely comes from a slang term for using a bazooka to take out a tank. Most likely because the use of the rocket made a quick loud noise.

I think you will find the Marine MK-153 SMAW is the closest real world match to Zap's "bazooka". It was in development in 1981 when the figure was designed.

I'm lucky enough to have a very near mint versin of Zap..And yes, he is well taken care of. He even has his V2 bazooka accessory that is unbroken. He wasn't played with at all, probably why he is in such great shape.

Great review! I did get a straight arm Zap & Short fuze in 1985 at a Wise Owl arts and crafts store. I was surprised at the time to see such as old figure, but I think they had old stock of toys because I did remember getting a Charon Clash of the Titan's figure in 1984. My mom thought I was a little nuts because I wanted to go to Wise Owl for TOYS! My Zap and Short Fuze figures both broke there thumbs and fingers. The verbal rule among my friends was if they couldn't hold a weapon they couldn't go into battle; informally a 2 strikes your out rule. My friend Chris even went so far as if they still had one good arm but had broken fingers they couldn't fight back with kung-fu- they had not fingers. Thanks again HCC788. Hope to see you at Joecon. I'm writing down questions to ask you.

After Marvel stopped publishing GI Joe the IP went on to other publishers. Devils Due and IDW. These stories were written by Hama as well. One book is a prequel that showcases the original joes telling stores about how Hawk recruited them. It also featured a story about the missing Joe Shooter. Shooter was just an Easter egg in the first issue. Named after one of the staff members at Marvel.

Another thing to mention is there is versions of Zap with thick thumbs like yours and also thinner thumbs, I guess Hasbro figured they needed to do something about the breakage of thier new figures. I was never a fan of the hands. You had to be extremely careful to get them to hold there weapons.

Thanks so much for this review! Either Zap, Breaker or Stalker was one of my first GI Joes ( I think it was Breaker). Zap was great, but my Zap broke his thumbs pretty quick. Despite their generic molds, which did bother me a little bit even back then, I still love the first wave of GI Joes. They started years of enjoyment for me that still make me smile. Hi, HoodedCobraCommander788 ! Great Review! I bought my first Zap figure last year (swivel arm version). I agree that it's better not to put the handle in this figure's hands. I don't want to break my Zap's perfect thumbs, so I just let it rest more on the figure's shoulder. I browsed the 334inchjoe.com link. I didn't see Battle Accessory Packs in the list of topics that was posted. Why do you think that Hasbro made these Battle Accessory Pack weapons in different colors? Why not just keep Cobra Commander's pistol black instead of baby blue or dark blue, or Doc's helmet tan instead of dark green? Was Hasbro just failing at trying to lure kids in to buy differently colored weapons for their Joe and Cobra figures ?

    • @HCC788
      @HCC788  6 років тому +1

Not really sure about the color change. I believe some other toy lines released accessory packs in the original colors. From a collecting perspective, it is nice to be able to easily tell the original from the re-issue.

nyquist75 I guess he's scared of breaking the back piece, apparently some Zap's have a broken back just because of removing his backpack and unscrewing him could break him more.

Yeah, I should be arriving late on the 22nd. I'm hoping to attend the Finest's bar meetup.

The first series is too plain. I have them all, but they're all just the same by and large. The diversity later on is what makes GI Joe's awesome.

100% agree. For me, I can skip 1982 without any doubt. The 1983 v1.5 figures are definitely better along with the rest of the 1983 line.

@@johnsoehnlen4781 I have no use for the straight armed ones. V1.5 is great because you get the first series with the extra articulation.

HCC788 Hello, You could get a black Sharpie marker and draw in a mustache , not on the figure-- on you. :)

I'll consider that, since I can't grow a proper mustache.

I'm sorry. I watched this video too intently and I think it broke Zap's thumbs.

I'm not sure "Zap" is the right name for a guy with a bazooka. Do bazookas "zap"?

The 90s was such a terrible era for GI*JOE figures. I don't know why the 90s had to have neon all over the place, but it just looks terrible! Glad I had moved on to other things around that time.
