    Bought this unit and it is amazing. Don't wait, buy it asap. It's worth every penny. Use it for smoking, grilling and any protein I put in the oven. The magnet is very strong. I keep it on the side of my refrigerator everyday. Super simple compared to the Maverick. Truly one of the best products I have ever bought. One note that doesn't have anything to do with the alarm, I left the probe in a tri tip to actually watch the carryover after pulling the meat off the grill. Amazed to see the beef rise 18 degrees and it monitors the high low temps on the right side of the main temp reading. If I haven't sold you on this product, there is nothing more I can say. It's perfect.

    THIS is how simple it should be to program a thermometer. I am throwing my MaverickET-733 away, it is much too complicated to use. I've had it for several years and it spends most of the time in the pantry because it is too difficult to program. Great review!

    Excellent review and tutorial! I just unboxed my Smoke to test it out on some baked potatoes on the Weber Performer, and rather than read the instructions, decided to check out UA-cam first. This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Thanks a million!

    Awesome video, thanks for the overview. I really like Thermoworks products and their customer service is top notch. I purchased two of their Chef Alarms about 3 years ago and used them on my smoker. I have 4 probes (2 ambient air probes and 2 meat probes). I would simply unplug and plug in each probe to get reads on my meat temps and air temps. This product solves all issues with my current setup of having to constantly unplug probes. Also the wireless feature is amazing. Being able to set an alarm that will wake me up when my smoker hits about 215 degrees to refuel would be a life saver and save me a lot of sleep on those late overnight cooks. Take my money Thermoworks.
    Also I have to say I was very impressed with my Chef Alarms. They held up really well, very good quality, and survived me leaving them out in the rain.

      I was thinking the same thing...but I'm sure they put a lot of thought into that and had reasons for not doing that. Even with the 4 probes that the iGrill 2 has...I usually only use one meat probe. But yeah, I agree with you, that would have been really nice if they would have done that.

      I've got to where I like to use a ChefAlarm with air probe for the pit temps and the Smoke with two needle probes for meat temps. It's nice having a dedicated device for each.

    Great video, I've been researching this for a while and am looking to buy it but I'm curious how well it has held up after a year of use. I notice you use yours on a ceramic, have you drilled a hole for the wires to go in or do you just let the lid close on the wire? I don't really want to drill a hole into my grill but I've read that closing the grill lid on the probe wire can cause failure after a while. Have any of your probes failed?

    Great reviews, i love your channel. I need some advice. I just bought the Masterbuilt 30" electric smoker but it did not come with a meat thermometer. i am a rookie smoker an need a thermometer. what would you recommend? this one in the video or the igrill 2. i am having a cookout for the 4th of july and need to order one this week. is this the best one or the igrill 2 or something else? i really only need have to have 1 probe but i would not mind 2 or more. if you could only choose one what would you choose or what would you suggest that i get? i dont have anything as of now. again great videos they helped a lot

    Instructions read: avoid pinching the cable between hot surfaces such as a grill hood. How do I run it out of my smoker to the bae unit? I have an old simple canister Charbroil smoker. Thanks for any guidance.

    • @StokedOnSmoke

      I'm honestly not sure....you'd have to call their customer service and ask. I've always had ThermoWorks controller probe cables slightly pinched when using kamados...and I've never noticed an issue. I think in general...if you can avoid doing that...then you should...but sometimes (like w/ kamados) it's hard to avoid that.

    Thanks for the video Steve. I'd be curious about your opinion vs. igrill2. I just bought the igrill 2 for less than this with 4 probes. In addition, I won't need buy an add on in 2017 to view on my iPhone.

    • @StokedOnSmoke
      @StokedOnSmoke  7 років тому +2

      As you may know...I reviewed the iGrill 2 when it first came out and still have it and use it. I like that the iGrill 2 has 4 probes, but I def think the current radio communication and the soon to be released Wi-Fi add on make this a better overall package. I'm also partial to ThermoWorks products b/c of how well made their products are. I've heard some mixed opinions too of customer support on iGrill products ever since Weber bought out the iGrill brand...but don't have any personal experiences with that to agree/disagree. Also keep in mind...you won't have to buy an add on to view it on your phone WITHIN Bluetooth distance...but the upcoming add on for the Smoke will let you view your cook from anywhere. Not knocking the iGrill 2 at all. I've used it a ton and have really enjoyed it. Prob won't use it much now w/ the release of the Smoke though...

    • @StokedOnSmoke
      @StokedOnSmoke  7 років тому

      I think there are definitely advantages to being able to monitor your cook while your away from home. It allows you to leave and run errands, hang w/ friends away from home w/o having to babysit your cook around the house all day. There's nothing wrong w/ committing to hanging around the house all day of course (and I do that a lot), but I like the flexibility of having the option to head out for a while if I want. Thanks for the link to the probe port too. Good info.

    Is there a low battery notification ? And are you still liking the unit ?

    • @StokedOnSmoke
      @StokedOnSmoke  3 роки тому

      Yes, there is a low battery icon for both the base unit and the receiver. I loved using the Smoke but recently tend to use either the Signals or the new Smoke X. The original Smoke is still an excellent unit at the price point now.

  • @timharper1730
    @timharper1730 7 років тому

    Thanks for the review, Steve! Does the Smoke come with K- probes? What is the difference between the Smoke and their ThermaQ model? I know ThermaQ is 250.00 and Comes with K- probes but no receiver.

    • @StokedOnSmoke
      @StokedOnSmoke  7 років тому

      The ThermaQ isn't wireless for starters and it comes with their Pro-Series probes (www.thermoworks.com/Handheld-Probes/Probes/Pro-Series?tw=BBQBROS). It's a pro-grade unit that reads MUCH higher temps (check the specs on their website) and it's really good for Sous Vide cooking too.

    • @timharper1730
      @timharper1730 7 років тому

      StokedOnSmoke Thanks for the info, Steve! The ThermaQ would be a perfect unit if it were wireless and had a receiver. Standard probes seem to be the weak link in most units. I need to contact Thermoworks and see if the Smoke can be upgraded with the K- probes.

  • @bckey1440
    @bckey1440 6 років тому

    One thing I don't like is that the base is the bigger of the 2 with the bigger display. It has to sit outside with the pit. I would much rather have it reversed with the nice display and folding stand in the house with me and a small base outside with the pit. I live on the coast and bbq pits and electronic gadgets take a beating due to the high humidity and salt air. I get the fact that the receiver is designed to be more mobile but being limited to a 300 ft. range how mobile does it need to be. Minor gripe to an otherwise great product.

    • @StokedOnSmoke
      @StokedOnSmoke  7 років тому

      It comes w/ their Pro Series probes and per their website:
      Cable Max Temp: 700°F (370°C)
      Transition Max Temp: 644°F (340°C)
      Probe Range: -58 to 572°F (-50 to 300°C)

    Went to use mine for the first time today. Midway through smoking the handheld lost connection. Followed instructions to try and regain signal with no luck. Contacted the company and was told support would contact me today which never happened. So far I’m not impressed given the amount of money this thing cost.

    The drawback to this compared to an ET733 is there is no clip to hang it. A side table MUST be used. Not a deal breaker, just a pain in the butt.

    • @StokedOnSmoke
      @StokedOnSmoke  7 років тому +1

      Those cables are designed to take a beating and have lids shut on them constantly. It's always good practice to not shut a lid w/ a lot of force though, as you could possibly damage one that way.

      My Thermoworks probes have always failed after just a few times doing that. They only have a 6 month warranty so you'll have to buy them again. Other brands have better reliability, better warranty, and are cheaper.

      I have a Thermopro TP08.. same functionality as Smoke, except has a LIFETIME warranty on probes-- no questions asked. Abuse and replace as much as you like. And it's less than half the price of the TW Smoke.

    • @briangasseling3489
      @briangasseling3489 7 років тому

      I cut a small slot in the edge of the smoker body (1/8" wide X ~1" down) to keep the probe cable from getting smashed each time you put the lid on. It's a common fix for older WSM`s without the grommet in the side. I imagine this fix will work on the kettle as well.

  • @learntobbq

    In the world of BBQ thermometers, the competition is growing and the products are improving. Thermoworks is now becoming the Weber of the thermometer. That is NOT a compliment. I reviewed the iGrill2 and iGrill3 when they first came out. I would not recommend either one today. Weber is now run by BDT Capital Partners, a merchant bank. All the US jobs at Weber are now in China. George Stephen Sr (the inventor and owner of the Weber Kettle) is now rolling around in his grave.
