I have the Thermopro and love it. For half the money, better range and better temperature accuracy, this is an easy call. It's definitely not as user friendly as the Smoke, but after the first time you spend 5 minutes to learn it, you never even think about it. I would rather have 2 of these than one Smoke anyday.
Remote receiver just stopped working on my smoke,just little bit shy of three years of using it,strange it broke so soon. So it's a time for new one and doesn't have to be Smoke,I think I'll go with Thermo Pro.
FYI water boils at 212F at sea level. As you go up in elevation, the boiling point of water comes down. If you are about 1000ft above sea level, the boiling point is 210.2F. Check wikipedia to find the boiling point at your elevation? Ultimately, how accurate is the Smoke now?

The difference could be a result of the altitude, water boils at 212 at sea level, the higher you go, the lower it boils. Thanks for the review, I'm buying the first one = thermoworks.

thanks for this review. I just smoked my first brisket today and i didnt quite get the results I was lookin for. I had a little trouble getting to and staying at my target temps. a lot of that was do to the fact that i didnt even have an instant thermometer let alone anything like the two in your video. when i needed to check the temp of the meat (more often than i should have because i had no idea how quick a 5lb brisket would cook since theres no videos of one so small) i needed to open the lid and wait a little for the analog thermometer to settle. I feel like a wireless thermometer would have really helped and now I know i dont need to spend 100 bucks.
You can calibrate the Smoke for better accuracy. Just got it today and it passed all my test. I just needed an accurate reading and something that could get me away from running back and forth to the kitchen. Haven't taken it down the street but I am at the other end of the house and it is working.
I'm really curious if the Thermopro had a better range or just takes longer to tell you if it is out of range. Have you ever done a test where you turn off the unit that goes to the smoker to see how long it takes for the other unit to tell you that it's not getting a signal? I know the Thermoworks takes ~15 seconds from another video I've seen.

I have the Chef Alarm, which is basically the 1 channel version of the Smoke (I’m already ready to upgrade). They both should have a button on the back that lets you calibrate them if the reading is off. If you run probe tests in the future, consider using an ice bath test. No altitude issues, and no need to dunk probes in boiling water to test their accuracy.

Hey, I'm pretty sure you can go thru a calibration button on the back and adjust your smoke up 2 or 3 degrees to agree with the boiling water and the instant read thermometer.

I guess I noticed other comments on this, but altitude (pressure) is difference with boiling points as well as impurities. I live in Florida at sea level I'd expect 212° F with distilled water but I'm from Chicago (about 600') and expect 210-211° F.
My issue with it was the build quality didn’t seem great (I was right, it has already broke and been thrown out) and the controls on the smoke are more intuitive.
Water rarely boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit. 212 is the temp at sea level with pure water. Depending on the weather, and your elevation, and what is in the water, it goes down. I live at 3000’ elevation and run from well water. My water typically boils from 200-205 degrees.
So you can't change the smoke temperatures without going outside ? The pro has all them buttons on in the house so your in control of it, is it just me that thinks the smoke is backwards ? I wanted the smoke because it's magnetic and should be able to fit in a bag and the magnets still hold it but why would I want all the functions in the pissing down rain and not in the dry ? I got the wrong pro I got the one that you couldn't set a lower temp on a 24 hour cook it's nice to know you haven't burnt out or over slept pretty useless without the lower function u can tie it in a bag then hang it but water can still get in would be better magnetic and fitting under a metal table but having the functions under a table is useless 😂
Great review. I really like my Smoke. It's also very sturdy as you said. Although it seems the 08S is a bit more accurate, and has more range. But not to the point where I think I'll be switching over.
Not sure about the boiling water test, because you know water boils differently at different altitudes , and I know that mine is always on the button. How high are you to sea level please, they are supposed to be +- .5 degrees. I smoke fish, brisket, and ribs often, they always come out perfect with the Thermo SMOKE unit. They have a number of calibration and will fix if they are off. But one or two deg. is not much to worry about like you said. Nice comparison of units. Thx
This is really a no brainer....out of the 3 most important categories, TP-08S clearly wins 2 out of 3....range and price, and ties the Smoke in accuracy (yes, I'm mindful that the the Smoke can be calibrated)......really, the Smoke is not a better unit. The only other important category which should be considered is durability. I wonder how will these 2 units compare....say, 3 years from now? I really do not consider functionality as important...I figured out my TP in about 3-4 minutes once I watched the video
The most important factor is usability. Range doesn't really matter as long as it adequately covers the area in which you usually roam while cooking. The conclusion on accuracy is actually the other way around. Boiling water is 212f at sea level, Ohio is not at sea level, hence the temp of boiling water is lower. Thermoworks is more accurate.
It is not clear to me that the probes are in error for the smoke - at 212 F you would have steam, an accurate probe in water should never hit 212. Also you are at the top of the pot which would be the coldest water- steam( the boil ) starts at the bottom and the steam rises. As you noted, a couple of degrees is not that important.

For every 500 feet of elevation the boiling point of water drops 1 degree. So if you are at about 1000 to 1500 feet up, the thermoworks is more accurate.
Same comment about boiling point versus temperature. Maybe the guy is right, if he’s at sea level, but since he didn’t mention his altitude, it is hard to know which one is more accurate. If he is at any significant elevation, he should EXPECT the thermometer to read lower.
Instructions on Smoke read: avoid pinching the cable between hot surfaces such as a cast metal grill hood without some insulating protection. Is that an issue? I have an old cylinder type Charbroil smoker. How do I run the cable out of it? Thanks.
I wouldn't want to go against the manufacturers instructions, but I've run it under the door a hundred times, no problem. I also have a video on my channel about installing a probe port on my offset. I use that now.
It's a big issue! I have the Smoke X4 and 2 of my 4 probes died after the first use in my Masterbuilt 1050, which does have a probe port. I got replacements from the manufacturer and half of them failed after just 2 cooks. I never have more than 2 functional probes available for a cook from a unit I purchased based on the fact that it can run 4 probes simultaneously. I baby the probes during use and in storage, and they still fail regularly. Very disappointed given the cost of the Smoke X4...buyer beware, the probes are very delicate!

Lol it’s not inaccurate at boiling water. The temp for boiling water changes depending on elevation... the higher above sea level the lower temp needed to boil water. Highly likely that the thermoworks was reading the more accurate temp..
wish you would have covered the time it takes for each to refresh the new temp to the portable unit.. even at the end of your video the smoke showed the temp but the temp on the portable unit was not even the same 11:51 looks like it took at least 5 seconds or more to refresh the temp to the current one
i dont think we have enough info to figure out the delay in that short time. the temps kept jumping, as they do, and the receiver never really read the same as the transmitter
They all seem pretty solid. I actually melted the silicone on one of the thermoWorks probes, but it was my fault. They sent me a new one free of charge.
I saw on the screen he had a max set to 210 on the smoke. Isthat a changeable value because that would explain why smoke did t go any higher. Did anyone else notice that
That’s just the alarm setting. So when the thermometer reaches 210 and alarm sounds. It doesn’t stop the thermometer from reading temps higher than that.
Spend $40 and you'll be happy. The SMOKE doesn't have a built in timer like the Thermoworks. If you are cooking ribs and doing the 2-2-1 method, you can set a timer for your hours so you don't have to keep track of each stage of the cook. You'd think the "professional" SMOKE unit would have a timer...not all products that are labeled "professional" have engineers with common sense.
I think the engineers knew that 99.9% of people always have a cell phone with them, and they can use that timer. I never carry the receiving unit with me. I just plop it on the kitchen counter and check the temps from time to time, or check them on the phone app. I’ve never used the timer on any thermometer I’ve owned. Always my phone or watch.

I tried that exact model of thermpro and it sucked. Had to constantly re pair it, it would work for 15 mins and just go to dashes on the remote end, i wasnt 20 to 30 ft away in my house. I was replacing batteries every time i used it just to get it to pair up. I read the Amazon reviews and there were dozens of complaints saying the same thing. I sent it back. Very disappointed. Had a little better luck with a maverick, but would loose connection after an hour or less and have to go outside, get next to it and pair it up again. Bleh. no thanks. I'll try Smoke for 100 Alex.
That’s strange that 2 models of thermometer would have a similar problem. Could it be something with the way your house is constructed? Or you could of received 2 malfunctioning unit. 3 times the charm I hope, for your sake.
@@daveshouseofbbq I thought it strange as well, but I had difficulties from the very beginning with the thermpro just getting it paired. I replaced the factory batteries and it paired right up so I thought i was good to go. It then worked for a little while, lost connection, had to pair it again, did the same thing 15mins later. I put it aside for a week or so, turned it on, it wouldn't pair, took batteries out and back in. It wouldn't pair, replaced them, it paired up but wouldn't last. it just seemed to lack xmit power or something or the receiver wasnt sensitive enough, hard to say so i sent it back. It was a little different than the maverick as far as faulting out. So, we'll see how this Smoke works out.
the kick stand on the smoke is crap also i had to glue the magnets into the unit to keep them from falling out other thatn that i do use it all the time and i like it
well the therm pro is 38 degrees off on one probe and probe 2 is 46 degrees off on meat probe i just got it out of box i double check it with smoker probe and therm pop the last two was with in 3 degrees so i highly dont recommend the therm pro is junk. you will eat raw chicken or pork therm pro tp-20s was junk modle old manual one i have as well was dead with smoker probe i like cooked food done not raw.
i would rather have the temp probe be a little lower temp then what its to read not 46 degrees above the temp its to be reading so therm pro tp-20s i would stay clear of this one chicken raw alarms going off says take the chicken off grill and both of the probe 1 and 2 on the therm pro was way off reading high temps which all the others was 46 degrees off i checked it therm pop and grill and old manual reader and all was with in 1 to 2 degrees but therm pro way higher reads and all on same pc of bird... strange that this is china junk once again trying to do harm...

depends on where you live, how far above see level your at. i live in wiscosin so water boils at around 210.5

What altitude MSL are you at when you tested this? Something tells me you were at a higher elevation.

True. Built quality is definitely superior on the Smoke, plus I like how you can track the temp on your phone ( for an extra cost)

all it take is 1000 feet and the boiling temp drops by almost 2 degrees, at 500 feet the boiling temp is .9 degrees lower

Never reviewed the high low of the cook. That would be important in the middle of the night. Measure spikes or lows.
True. I never use that feature, but I’d imagine it’s handy.
Higher elevation means lower boiling temperature due to less air pressure.
So that maybe the thermaworks is more accurate at 210.X? Or both are off by 1 degree?

I tried that exact model of thermpro and it sucked. Had to constantly re pair it, it would work for 15 mins and just go to dashes on the remote end, i wasnt 20 to 30 ft away in my house. I was replacing batteries every time i used it just to get it to pair up. I read the Amazon reviews and there were dozens of complaints saying the same thing. I sent it back. Very disappointed. Had a little better luck with a maverick, but would loose connection after an hour or less and have to go outside, get next to it and pair it up again. Bleh. no thanks. I'll try Smoke for 100 Alex.
That’s strange that 2 models of thermometer would have a similar problem. Could it be something with the way your house is constructed? Or you could of received 2 malfunctioning unit. 3 times the charm I hope, for your sake.
@@daveshouseofbbq I thought it strange as well, but I had difficulties from the very beginning with the thermpro just getting it paired. I replaced the factory batteries and it paired right up so I thought i was good to go. It then worked for a little while, lost connection, had to pair it again, did the same thing 15mins later. I put it aside for a week or so, turned it on, it wouldn't pair, took batteries out and back in. It wouldn't pair, replaced them, it paired up but wouldn't last. it just seemed to lack xmit power or something or the receiver wasnt sensitive enough, hard to say so i sent it back. It was a little different than the maverick as far as faulting out. So, we'll see how this Smoke works out.
I’ve probably tried 5 or 6 brands of wireless thermometers at this point, 9 times out of 10 I use my Smoke.
the kick stand on the smoke is crap also i had to glue the magnets into the unit to keep them from falling out other thatn that i do use it all the time and i like it
I agree the kickstand is a bit thin, never had any problems with the magnets though.
I loved my thermopro but sadly it died 1 year after I bought .
Doug M. Did you give them a call and see if they’d replace it? I’m curious how their customer service is.
Actually I did not as the warranty had passed. But you know what I will, its worth a try. As I really did like it. I will let you know !

Build quality. The more expensive one is still working flawlessly 2 years later. The cheaper one was thrown out, stopped working. Thanks for watching.

well the therm pro is 38 degrees off on one probe and probe 2 is 46 degrees off on meat probe i just got it out of box i double check it with smoker probe and therm pop the last two was with in 3 degrees so i highly dont recommend the therm pro is junk. you will eat raw chicken or pork therm pro tp-20s was junk modle old manual one i have as well was dead with smoker probe i like cooked food done not raw.
Since making this video I have thrown the thermo pro out. I’m using the smoke as I type to make beef ribs.
It sounds to.me like your answer for the tjermoworks smoke wS a political answer. But I really like thermoworks products any way
i would rather have the temp probe be a little lower temp then what its to read not 46 degrees above the temp its to be reading so therm pro tp-20s i would stay clear of this one chicken raw alarms going off says take the chicken off grill and both of the probe 1 and 2 on the therm pro was way off reading high temps which all the others was 46 degrees off i checked it therm pop and grill and old manual reader and all was with in 1 to 2 degrees but therm pro way higher reads and all on same pc of bird... strange that this is china junk once again trying to do harm...

Daniel Lucido I understand what you mean, but yea they are. Any thermometer that has a separate unit that you can carry with you and tell the temp, is called wireless. That’s for watching.
