Great review and I agree 100%. I ruined a brisket with a failed cheap thermometer a few years ago. I picked up a Thermopen and a Thermoworks Smoke and never looked back. They have both paid for themselves since, as I have never ruined any cooks due to temp problems.
Coincidentally, was just going to search your library for coverage on these products. I have the Thermapen and concur with your thoughts. The Smoke is what I'm interested in. You pretty much confirmed what I was hoping for. Thank you for the on-the-ground reviews.
Hey there! big fan, and have been following your vids for a few months now. I just picked up the SnS Kettle, and bought both of these thermometers using your affiliate link. Thanks for the excellent and comprehensive reviews and great videos! Can't wait to try out some of your cooks for myself next weekend.
I have a smoke too. Got a thermapop but not the Thermapen. Thermoworks makes a quality product. My kickstand warped due to too close to a chimney of lit charcoal way back. I need to see if I can get another one to pop back on. Also the probes are a little loose in the plugin jack. I need to call them. Possibly they would help me get things straight. Nice review Ry
That’s a tough one. I think either is high end and excellent quality. I guess it depends on your needs. My pellet grill is WiFi and already has two probes so the only time I use another type is on my kettle or WSM. All I really ever need is one probe for meat and one for ambient temp so can’t see spending the extra money. If you have a stick burner and are doing a lot of pork butts or brisket at once I guess having six probes would be cool if you aren’t keeping an eye on them. The Smoke is all a backyard guy needs in my opinion.
A good chef needs his tools. I always buy the best I can afford. Some times I get the best some times I get close to the best. That doesn't mean they cost the most. Nice review.
I enjoyed and agree with your review. But you didn't mention the single reason that I bought the MK4 Thermapen, the backlight. I was out in the backyard at the kettle after dark. In one hand I had the Lavatools thermometer, in the other hand a set of tongs, and in the other hand a flashlight. The Lavatools thermo is a great product, but had no backlight. Later that night I ordered the Thermapen.
I've done several videos on that. This playlist on my channel has several videos about installing ports for the sensor cables: ua-cam.com/video/SUHX7UlcAB8/v-deo.html
Really good review. I have hovered over the button for the pen several times. Maybe its time :) Bought cloudburst today. Looking forward to reading it after we finish our current book :)
I have the thermapen and just wanted to remind everyone that it is made in England! So you can buy it knowing you are supporting a country that has workers who are treated better than other countries that produce similar products.
I thought about getting one, but that style of cooking isn't really the way I enjoy using the grill. Nothing wrong with it, I just enjoy tending the fire myself :)
@@CookingWithRy fair response. I have been researching thermometers and I saw the new offering from Thermoworks and seemed like if I went their way it would be prudent to purchase this model over the smoke -- in case cooking styles changed. I def agree with your statement about needing only 2 monitors for the most part. and I like sitting with my grill so the billows isnt as important to me but things change over time.... just hope never my love for smoking and grilling.
The only products worth buying. Don't waste your time or money with any other cheap ass brand, they are never as good. I have had a Thermapen mk4 for over a year and I swear by it. I recently bought the Smoke and it is a brilliant unit, I trust it 100% and it has never let me down. They both cost be enough over here in Australia, but if you're serious about results, don't mess about with inferior rubbish. The poor man pays twice.
Yes. It's clearly more expensive, but it's a tank. And another thing--I've been using it for about a year, and I use it, and the Thermapen A LOT, and I still haven't had to change batteries :)
Ry...you do have the TP 07 wireless bbq thermometer.....which of the 2 units is more accurate? Thermoworks, or Thermo Pro 07? The reason I'm asking that recently I purchased a TP07....and after checking the accuracy my unit is within 1 degree, after I checked on a boiling water...I wonder if Thermoworks is just as, or even more accurate?
I keep reading/hearing about people mentioning their probes failing. I've never had a probe fail, ever. And I only upgraded to a Thermoworks 2 months ago, and I used the same walmart kitchen cheapo for 10 years before that (shrugs) I don't expect my probes my to fail based on the cheapie And I didn't treat it well... tossed it around when not in use, blah blah blah
@@robertweber3140 I researched a lot of them and decided to go with the Fireboard. I just ordered three new probes after a year and a half. They are $15 each.
Cooking With Ry all the features all the buttons to higher or lower the temp etc have to be changed outside where your grill is when in the meat, my alarm goes off during the night sometimes when it hits the wood but I can change the temp and go back to sleep I don't have to go outside in the rain or the pitch black to make adjustments the smoke is backwards, putting the alarm on silent defeats the object 😂 but luckily thermpro didn't make it backwards they made the receiver the main control system because you don't want to go outside to make adjustments
Cooking With Ry it rains a lot here so I have a plastic bag to keep the rain off ,the smoke was magnetic I believe which was going to be ideal but under the metal table with all the features just didn't make sense to me 😂 would of solved the rain problem 😂 I'd of bought it if the receiver was the one with all the buttons without a doubt
That's my preferred brand. I've been using this for a few years now. Much better than the cheap stuff I used in the past. Nice video, man!

I have the Thermo Pop.. Love it... A real game changer..
My wife jus ordered a thermapen mk4 for my upcoming bday from her & the kids...Great tutorial on both products.. Keep up the good work Ry 👍

Thanks! Hope you enjoy that Kettle 👍
I had a customer recommend these to me. Thanks for the review. I am planning on getting these!
The smoke is on sale for 30 percent off. Just ordered mine!
it's good to know the Thermapen gives an instant temp, I have a few cheap ones and they can take up to 10 seconds for a read

Thank you Farmer Phil. That's what I'm calling you now :)
Ry is like the Bob Ross of cooking.
Without the fro :)
Hi Ry i just bought Thermapen Mk 4 through your link. Many thanks for your didactic presentation. Keep up the guud job . All da best
I have the original Thermapen, and treat it quite a bit worse than you do Ry, and it's still rolling and rock solid.
The thing is a tank :)
I have the Mk 4, The thermo pop and the Dot, luv them all
Great informative review and video. I'll purchase both of them when I upgrade. Thanks for another great video.
Thanks Ry good info. I’ve been thinking of upgrading my gear and have been researching the Smoke. Definitely the way I’m going to go. Good review.
Hey GT, based on your research, is Smoke better than Fireboard?

Thanks GT for putting it in perspective. All I am is backyard at this time using my trustworthy 22.5 WSM.
I am proud to be the number 100 thumbs up! Love your videos.
Thanks so much!

Very good detailed review man! That is a dang good brand
It certainly is :)
Perhaps in a future video you could show how to deploy and use the smoke when you are cooking something. Where do you run the cable?
I've done several videos on that. This playlist on my channel has several videos about installing ports for the sensor cables: ua-cam.com/video/SUHX7UlcAB8/v-deo.html
My understanding is that thermoworks customer service is outstanding. If you had a probe fail they will probably give you an other one
Well now my wife has a problem with you. 😉I've been going back and forth whether to get these thermometers or not and you sold me.
LOL. Love mine :)

Great video. Very informative. I have both units and love them. High quality!
Your videos are super helpful Thank you!!!
I've been on the fence with the MK4. I think now I'll be ordering it.
I really like the feel of it, too. It's just so solid :)
Get off the fence. Buy it, you won't regret it
Any chance of doing a review of Signals /Billows ?

Have you tried the new RFX MEAT from them? Would be curious what your thoughts are on that.
I’ll be getting one in the near future.

just ordered one off Amazon :D

In your opinion is the smoke more accurate than the thermopro you used in most of your videos
Yes. It's clearly more expensive, but it's a tank. And another thing--I've been using it for about a year, and I use it, and the Thermapen A LOT, and I still haven't had to change batteries :)
I just have one question. Is it ok to drop this unit on concrete?
It's ridiculously expensive as a Canadian. 😭 The exchange rate hurts
Great review thank you
Ry...you do have the TP 07 wireless bbq thermometer.....which of the 2 units is more accurate? Thermoworks, or Thermo Pro 07?
The reason I'm asking that recently I purchased a TP07....and after checking the accuracy my unit is within 1 degree, after I checked on a boiling water...I wonder if Thermoworks is just as, or even more accurate?
I think I have the TP08. It and the Thermoworks are comparable in accuracy. The build quality is where the main difference is :)
I love my thermapen

I've had one fail, but then I use them 4-5 times a week. I have to have a backup just in case :)
While I have a Thermopop and love it, I am up in the air between The Smoke and Fireboard. Anyone have thoughts?
I have the Fireboard, and I love it!
@@cyberbeer65, thanks. Did you also look at The Smoke? Gotta look into prices of probes, for replacement.

Yep love thermo works, won't use anything else
Nice!!
The thermapen MK4 is $88 at eBay .
The Thermapen MK4 is $134 at Amazon . I guess I won't be getting one .
That's odd. It's $99 from ThermoWorks.
The ThermoWorks web site has a warning about some online sellers, including Amazon. $99 at the ThermoWorks web site. $79 for the classic.
Thermoworks does not sell through Amazon. That is a reseller trying to take advantage of you. They are $99 directly from Thermoworks.
Hey RY
I have a rub that I want you to try please send me your info that way I can send it to you
Thank you
Hi Ramon. You can contact me about sending samples through my website: www.cookingwithry.com/contact :)
The thermoworks is backward why would you want all the features outside ? Thermpro makes much more sense
What are you talking about? Outside?
Cooking With Ry all the features all the buttons to higher or lower the temp etc have to be changed outside where your grill is when in the meat, my alarm goes off during the night sometimes when it hits the wood but I can change the temp and go back to sleep I don't have to go outside in the rain or the pitch black to make adjustments the smoke is backwards, putting the alarm on silent defeats the object 😂 but luckily thermpro didn't make it backwards they made the receiver the main control system because you don't want to go outside to make adjustments
Ah, I see what you're saying. I have the ThermoPro, too, but I've personally never had to adjust the temp settings once they're set.
LOL. I've put my ThermoPro in a plastic bag many times :)
if i had 67k subs will get one lol
I know people with 0 subs who have one :)
Any reviews on something people on a disability income can afford?
I review what I have. I've done a video on the ThermoPro a while back, which costs less :)
