So in regards to players wanting to help the characters, one of the recurring things in these Fromsoft games is that often times meeting the player is the worst thing to happen to the character.
Numerous NPCs in dark souls end their quest lines losing all sense of purpose after accomplishing their goals and go insane afterwards.

    • @ToxicVex267

Yeah, but there are a few questions where meeting the player is a good thing and helps the NPCs reach their goals such as the NPCs in dark souls 3 and Elden Ring.

should be noted that the second "sister" probably isn't who she says she is. The first daughter claims that she's all alone and only asks you to search for her mom and dad, not her sister. Whenever she mentions her family, mom, dad, grandfather, she makes no mention of a sister at all. You'd think that if she had someone waiting for her, she wouldn't be so eager to leave home without them. The "sister" also tells you that she went outside, but as is stated in the video, this is the longest night of the hunt on record. A little girl would have had no reason/business going out alone. When you give her the ribbon from the little girl she's overfilled with joy "…What a perfect ribbon, and now it’s mine… I can’t wait to try it on. Heh heh…. ... Oh, it’s wonderful! Heh heh..." She never mentions her family at all beyond her "sister" and when she finally inquires about her fate she says, "Oh, how did this happen? Why would she go outside?" If she were her sister then it'd be presumed that she'd left for the same reason she did: to find Viola and Gascoigne or to seek shelter in Oedon Chapel. Why wouldn't she know that if she were her sister? Why wouldn't she take the music box with her? Also there's always been a bit of contention as to how exactly the "sister" died. The ladder she's lying next to isn't nearly high enough to actually kill anyone, I don't remember exactly but you take either no damage or a very negligible amount from it. But there's also a large troll standing right next to the ladder so it's far more likely that in her glee from finally acquiring the ribbon from the girl, she wasn't careful enough to avoid being killed by it.

The older Sister is very reminiscing of the fake iosefka, as in their replacing someone, so firstly the young Sister might had an older Sister that didnt survive "the scourge", so didnt feel the need to mention her.
And weirdly enough, you get an umbilical cord from iosefka which i always chalk up to her creating one from her experiments but maybe it was a hint of iosefka's origins and if that were true, then there might be a great one that specializes in replacing people with fakes versions of them. now i just Cooked all of this up in my mind so theres probably three redit thread about this and just take it with a grain of salt, just me admiring this gem of a game again just because

He's definitely more of a gameplay fight rather than a lore fight, hes the first roadblock for people who played other souls games since he's set up to punish running away to heal and his attacks are slow enough for you to get good use of the rally mechanic, he has a little gimmick to make him easier of you explore and is a multistage boss to get the player used to learning on the fly.
He has one of if not the most depressing story's, you can summon him though and play the box for him and he chuckles.

  • @SiritaLynx

FromSoftwares games tend to have really depressing stories and the story of this family might be the most sad. Ironically enough, yeah, if you avoid doing the questline, nothing bad happens to the children. You never speak to them, but at least indeed, you can hope they made it to the morning. Bloodborne nails its atmosphere and I can't help but love it. Can't wait more of your reactions to this game, it gets wild!

An important detail that vaati left out: After you give the bloodied ribbon to the sister and hear her cry, she starts giggling and exclaiming how the ribbon is all hers now as you start to walk away. This means shes either a sadistic piece of trash or maybe not even the girls sister at all considering the girl never mentions having one. Also it’s possible she didn’t jump to her death and was instead killed by the big ogre monster guy that sits at the bottom of the ladder right next to the window we talk to the girls at. When you go to her corpse you can retrieve the ribbon that has now been cleaned. Also there really is no guarantee that avoiding talking to the girl is a good ending (granted probably still better off for her). When you give her mother’s red jeweled brooch she still ends up getting eaten in the sewer. If you do nothing there is a moment halfway through the game where all the people you can talk to from behind their doors or through their windows will leave you with a “no response” prompt. In terms of the fight, Gascoigne is the first required boss of the game and so he’s not all tough after the first time through the game which I’m assuming the dude who made the video was well aware of how to beat him. I played through bloodborne after getting elden ring for Christmas and absolutely adoring it as my first souls game. Then I went into bloodborne thinking I was just gonna breeze through it having been accustomed to the gameplay of souls games. Boy was I wrong, took me a week just to beat Gascoigne 😅.

    • @idiosyncrasy7703

That's called a coping mechanism. People deal with trauma differently, and some, even irl, use laughter and making light of events as to avoid or push away the emotions brought by the trauma. Just because the sister laughed and said that the ribbon was hers now, doesn't make her a sadistic a-hole who wanted to kill her sister all along for a piece of cloth. It's more likely she's one of those people who can't really process trauma too well and resort to a coping mechanism such as laughter and joking about it to make herself not feel the pain as much as she would if she just acknowledged what happened. I know because I'm like that, too. Not to that extent as luckily enough I haven't experienced a traumatic event to that extent, but when I'm starting to feel upset or any negative emotion, I deal with it through jokes and comedy.

Remember how a few of us have said that From Software likes to tell us tragic stories? Yeah... Bloodborne is one of the heavier hitters in that department.
But I'd recommend experimenting in terms of wanting to watch the fight with the lore! I could see it working well both ways - you could even see what you're able to glean about a boss *from* the fight and its non-verbal storytelling of the character/environment, and discuss that before going into the lore! That could be an interesting way of going about these videos.

You can also send the little girl to a second location where she won’t be eaten by a giant pig, and while she will actually reach the clinic you send her to an impostor doctor takes the place of the doctor that was originally there and uses everyone you send there in her very… unfortunate experiments. Yeah unlike dark souls or Elden ring where there is still a chance to save everything in Bloodborne that chance passed by a LONG time ago for multiple lore reasons. The best thing anyone can do is leave cause the entire city is screwed.

Here’s a lore detail. If you notice, Gascoigne’s eyes are covered, the reason for this is that every Hunter is cursed to eventually go “Blood Drunk” and once they do they will be transported to the “Hunters Nightmare”(The place where Ludwig is at) where they will be trapped for all eternity. The reason they remove their eyes is because the eyes are what go blood drunk and once that happens you’re pretty much guaranteed to go to the Hunters Nightmare so in an effort to prevent this, many hunters remove their eyes. There is also another reason characters in Bloodborne remove their eyes but it’s big spoiler territory so I won’t get into it.

In Fromsoftware games, you can only uncover the lore after beating the boss. Before that point, there might be hints or a couple namedrops, but the whole story is always set up with the item descriptions they leave behind like the one Vaati put in the video.

By the time you fight the final boss, everyone you've met throughout your journey is already dead, gone mad, turned into a beast, or a combination of all three. The only thing your really doing is making sure the night and the hunt don't go on forever.

If you send the little girl to Iosefka's clinic, she makes it, but gets turned into a monster you have to put down. Also the older sister was going insane because after you give her the ribbon of her sister and you start to leave you hear her say, "Such a pretty white ribbon... and it's all MINE now hee hee hee...". Rom the Spider was doing their best to keep everyone covered in a barrier (not accurate but will give you an idea what I mean), but you have to kill Rom to find the source of evil that plagues the town because Rom's barrier keeps it concealed, which unfortunately removes that barrier so the whole town starts to go crazy. That's about the time you give her the ribbon, so the older sister was already starting to lose it. Yeah... Fromsoft is not known for happy outcomes. Even the "best good" endings you can get, are not that great, but it gives you an end. Whether it be bitter sweet, or just ending the issue at hand to give possible hope for a new beginning.

There is no happy ending to the tale of Gascoigne's family: Before you even start the game, the father has already gone mad, the mother is already dead, Henryk is already doomed, the daughter is already alone... maybe the best ending you can give them is letting them rest in peace together... ... ...There is one very strange detail about Gascoigne's family though: The music box that was used to restore Gascoigne's memories. The tune it plays is the theme of one of the final bosses in the game: An eldritch deity residing in a nightmare in which it tries to take care of its stillborn child... In a way, that boss's situation strangely mirrors that of Gascoigne's family...

When I first played BB and completed this storyline, I was so genuinely distraught after finding out the little girl was killed by that damn pig that I actually looked at guides to see if she could've been saved. I have a policy to not look at guides when going through a game for the first time, as I want my experience to be my own, but I couldn't let it go that she was killed.

If it alters your decision on fight before lore, most times in game you only know slight snippets of info before the bossfight. Most of the time in game a lot of the lore comes from item descriptions, the bosses Soul description, and environmental storytelling, most of which comes after the boss fight. I'd list examples, but don't want to spoil any potential future videos on you two
Going into the fight mostly blind is typically how these things go.

I think this lay out works! I mean his final words that Vaati mentions. if you saw that before the lore video you would have no idea about. i guess you could still miss it or forget about it. but having the backstory before the fight i think is always good. Then about it being anticlimatic yes after a lore video going that deep most fights might be. However that is a common thing with the souls games! I think bloodborne is alot better at giving you some lore from interactions and leading you down the path for more. Although i can only remember the Gascoigne stuff being like that. By the way sorry about the spelling, english is my second language! I think i did okey but just to be safe!

I think fight first lore second works cause that's how most Souls players consume the content. I always go to Vaati to learn more after beating a Fromsoft game.

Bloodborne is a world where the horror genre as a whole has infected the soul of the world. This prevents anyone from having a TRUE good ending. Everything continues the ruinous cycle within the world. Become a great one, congratulations you now are part of the problem. Leave the hunter's dream, the world hasn't changed and you have one life now.
This world is infected with intrigue, despair and an unknowable future. This makes Bloodborne my favorite game of all time.

What makes it kinda irritating is that you can, as the player, clear a path straight to the chapel, killing the pig and anything else before sending the girl. But because this is a video game (and one by Myasaki) everything just respawns. So despite best and legitimate efforts the girl will die regardless.
