Only 50? Wow, Mr “I’m great at games” over here. :P it took me sooooooo long to figure out Kalahmeet. But once I did, dragons in from soft games clicked from then on. Head on is the way to go.
Yeah, its just incredible. I`ve seen that scene plenty of times through the years, but even now when I think that I know better, I still found myself shedding a tear for that part.
We all do. Time may heal all wounds, but boy do the scars remain. The moment there's that shift of recognition in Sif's eyes... I swear, it makes my heart ache
Artorias - and best doggo Sif, for that matter - will always hold a special place in my heart. Such a heroically tragic story, and absolutely heartrending depending on when you interact with... certain parts... This story is one of the biggest reasons I love the Dark Souls lore so much.
And, since it was mentioned near the end, the title "Prepare to Cry" is a clever play on words! The original tagline of Dark Souls' marketing was "Prepare to Die." And since From Software loves telling us tragic stories - usually through characters you directly interact with and can feel attachment to - you can see how the title was an easy pick!
Sif clearly recognizing you before realizing you will have to fight to the death is such a moment to look back on because you don't realize it when you fight him at first.
If you fight Sif before you go to Oolacile and defeat Manus, you'll probably feel somewhat guilty. If you fight Sif after you defeat Manus, you will feel like a monster.
glad that you are going to look at both the original and remastered. pls more also the name "prepare to cry" is a play on the name of the dark souls 1 edition, which included the Artorias of the Abyss DLC and was called "Prepare to Die Edition".
Knight Artorias was one of my favorite bosses cause when I first fought him he was just another hurdle in my way of beating the game but my friend sent me his lore video and when I fought him in NG+ the fight felt completely different I felt so sad for him and Sif cause of how tragic their story was. After that I took time to learn about the story of each boss I fought and that’s when I began to truly appreciate how good the soulsborne games are.
The thing about Artorias and all of this story, is that we didn't know it until a year later when the DLC arrived. In the base game, we saw multiple references to him, his legend and everyone saying how much of a hero he was, so his legend wasn't just a tale in game, but also to us, players, until the DLC arrived and we saw everything that happened and realized: all those tales are about us, WE are the legendary knight who stopped the abbys in Oolacile. It was such an amazing way of telling a story, that only improved upon the released of Dark Souls 3 and all the references and missing story links being added.
Fighting Sif is probably the hardest part of the game. Not for the challenge but for the heartache. As Vaati said, for the sake of completing your goal you need the ring of abysswalking; and though Sif is your friend, she is duty bound to prevent anyone from taking it. One of you will have to die. I highly recommend for the next Prepare to Cry do The Children of Chaos. It's actually even more heart-wrenching then Artorias and Sif.
Artorias and Sif are such iconic characters in the Dark Souls franchise, partly because of how their story can touch even people who have never played the games
A nice detail. When you play Dark Souls 1 without playing the DLC. The fight with Sif is just a fight with a giant wolf, you don't know who he is, but you need Artorias's ring to move forward. In the intro before the fight starts, he sees you, grabs the sword and the fight starts, nothing special, so you just kill him and take the ring. But when you play the DLC before that fight, you help rescue Sif in the past and then you go to Artorias' grave in the present, the intro changes, instead of attacking you, he recognizes you, his face changes and expresses a lot of sadness, Because as VaatiVidya said in his video, he knows what you came looking for and he can't give it to you willingly, therefore one of the two will have to die in that fight. I still remember the anguish of having to fight him at that moment, because you have to kill him but you don't want to.
The prepare to cry is a play on the Dark Souls title when it came to PC called Dark Souls: Prepare to Die. Yea fighting Sif is VERY sad as if you fight him before going back in time, he won't recognize you, but if you did then you get that scene of him recognizing you. And he doesn't act to protect Artorias but really to protect anyone from being infected/corrupted by the abyss, which is especially sad since Sif saw what happened to Artorias. Part of me is happy they didn't show the later parts of the fight as unlike most boss fights in Dark Souls where the boss has a harder second phase Sif actually grows more injured and desperate but keeps fighting which makes it all the more heartbreaking knowing the backstory.
You hear about Artorias a lot in the game, like a key named after him, finding his special ring, or tales of his accomplishments, so he's a bit of a legend when you reach him. The 'Prepare to Cry' title is (probably) based off the first game's release called 'Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition'. I am always prepared and I always still cry. Right, time to binge watch the rest of Prepare to Cry again! Looking forward to watching them again here too! =)
The devs literally went out of their way to create a brand new scene for the fight of Sif when the fox first came out, unknown to anyone playing it at first until they found the smaller Sif in the abyss. Then doing the game all over again ignoring the boss fight until finishing the dlc just to see if it changed the intro of the fight. Sif forcing himself to fight the very person who helped save his life l, at the grave of his best friend, out of duty…always brings tears to my eyes
Its also very tragic that in DS3 the abyss watchers that were inspired by Artorias got corrupted by the abyss themselves and became mindless undead so they only live to destroy the abyss but they carry the abyss themselves so they are locked in endless battle against themselves. unable to die, unable to live
Vaati doesn't explain it much in this video as he probably expects most people who watch this to have played the game. But part of the reason Sif (Best wolf in any game ever) is trying to stop you is because he's defending a ring that allows one to traverse the abyss, so Sif trying to stop you from ending up like Artorias. On a side note, that cutscene where Sif recognizes you and sniffs you only happens if you do the DLC and make a somewhat hidden detour to rescue Sif before you start that fight. Also, the part about Artorias leaving his shield to protect Sif is true, the part that is a "lie" is that he was the one temporarily halted the abyss. Though he tried his best sadly he ended up getting corrupted.
Prepare to Cry stems from the motto of Dark Souls, which is: "Prepare to Die". Because that is what you do in Dark souls. You die and die over and over, slowly crawling and clawing your way to the end and emerging victorious. If you fail to win and give up on the game before beating it, you are considered to have gone "hollow".
@@dimlylit3086 Yes, it's a very philosophical defeat. You literally cannot lose in Dark Souls. The only way to actually lose is if you, the player, gives up. The line, "Prepare to Cry", is a reference to the original Dark Souls, whose tagline was "Prepare to Die". And yes, Sif's recognition and mournful howl makes me feel very, very sad. And yet, it's still special...

I didnt see anyone say it and I think its nice to know, the sad cutscene at the grave with Sif where he sniffs you and howls only happens if you freed him in Olacille before, if you get to the Sif fight before freeing him he just attacks you because you havent meet yet/ the timeline where he knows you didnt happen.
I feel like these guys would absolutely enjoy “The Paleblood Hunt”. That audiobook is one of the most detailed and expansive compendiums of Bloodborne ever. The story of Bloodborne is one of my favorites.
there is 2 cut scenes for fighting the dog, the first, he is aggressive, grabs the sword and attacks you. The second is the one you saw, he come up to you aggressively before smelling you and even thousands of years later he recognizes you.
The Great Wolf Sif fight in Dark Souls is amazingly done. When I first played that game I didn't know any of this, but I still felt profound sadness during that boss fight. The music, the arena, how Sif acts. Usually when I kill a boss I get a sense of accomplishment, but killing Sif just made me feel sad. They were able to make me understand that killing him was tragic without directly telling me anything.
Artorias and the Daughters of Chaos are among my favourite stories in video games. I would highly recommend to also watch Vaatis video about the Daughters of Chaos at some point in the future !
Prepare to Cry is actually a reference too, the original version of Dark Souls was titled "Prepare to Die" edition, so Vaati spun that in a fashion where it fits better for lore videos
not sure if anyone has commented this, but I'm sure the series name is inspired by dark souls slogan "prepare to die" and character stories kinda don't have "happy" endings but still very good stories, these videos really help to appreciate the stories that are told in the game but not very much in a traditional way, they build over time through dialogue and item descriptions, evebn though dark souls is kinda over ill always have hopes for more of it. it really changed the way i looked at games and how stories can be told in them
Fun fact about Artorias: The devs actually had plans for him to have voice lines. (If I remember correctly, that is the voice of Matt Mercer, too.) A lot more than the line about his failures were planned, including him begging you to kill him, asking you to find and protect Sif, and a few other lines. They cut it from the game because it was so hard to focus on the fight when you hear how much pain and emotional turmoil he's going through. (There used to be a mod that would put those lines back in the game, but I think it's gone defunct now.) He really is the ultimate 'fallen hero' trope in modern gaming. (Yes, I put him above Arthas, the Lich King from Warcraft.) The fact he is so uniquely strong of a character in the Dark Souls lore is made honestly more heartbreaking when you realize Raime, the Fume Knight from Dark Souls 2, was his soul resurrected (and even had his sword), and the Abyss Watchers are the Billy Badasses of the world of Dark Souls 3, inspired by Artorias' desire to fight to the bitter end... God, it just hits you right in the feels to know someone can be so driven by honor and duty that they'd lay themselves on the line and die to protect others.
God, the frenzied flame prepare to cry made me bawl my eyes out. It's the most tragic of all the prepare to cries, if you end up getting the lord of frenzied flame ending without knowing about rhanni's better ending. Which uh. I didn't.
I think most dog owners might have a hard time facing Sif. As for me it hit hard old memories of my 1st dog at the age of 5, mom named her Dusky she was with me for 15 years. The quest line was heavy for me but when Sif remembered us I broke down.
Ciaran actually loved Artorias, and likely never saw that romance through before he fell to the Abyss. Her corpse, presumably, is lying against the back of Artorias's gravestone, as there you can find the Hornet Ring, which belongs to her.
if you fight Siff after going to the past, he recognizes you has the human who fought with him, that's why he melows when he catches your scent and he knows he has to stop a very dear good friend in the name of duty: 2 friends bound by service and a past fight who now must duel to the death
Prepare to cry is a reference to the Prepare to die edition of dsrksouls1, they are also sad stories nothing in darksouls has a happy ending most of the time someone ends up dead
19:12 Oh it's even worse. He needs to defend the grave not just to protect his master's legacy, but because the sign of the pact Artorias made in order to safely traverse the abyss and fight the wraiths is stashed at the grave and Sif does not want you, his savior, to walk the same path and risk getting consumed as well.
Sif was still one of the most difficult fights in Dark Souls for me. Not because of the mechanics, I just don't like killing doggos. Especially when it's the goodest boi in Dark Souls. It was an honor to relieve Artorias of his pain and the fight you have with him is amazing.
Loved seeing this one, easily one of, if not the best Dark Souls related video online. Would really like to see your thoughts on Aatrox's quotes at some point too.
Dark Soul lore is so dense and compact that I'm surprised people who don't play Dark Soul even understand it just by watching lore videos. I'd recommend also check out same creator but video about Yhorm the Lonely Ruler and Siegmeyer the Adventurer which are far much more easy to understand their stories. The video about Artorias went a long about way to try and explain the problem in the world of Dark Soul and why Artorias was necessary. But the fore mentioned two well not so much I suppose. Also the "Prepared to Cry" is a play on the "Prepare to die", the original logo of Dark Soul 1 when they brought the game out to the PC instead of just Playstation.
While playing the game and piecing the story together for yourself, it can be difficult to experience the emotions involved. Vaati has a way of telling these stories, however, that just yanks at the heartstrings. This episode was great, but the next one "Children of Chaos" literally had me in tears at the end.
heartbreaking detail for me, if you listen carefully, you can here Sif whine after he sniffs. He not only knows who you are, but there much doesn't want to do this. But of course, both of you, have a duty to uphold.
18:36 Yes Artorias did saved Sif and Sif fought along side us to kill Manus just for us to go back years later and kill Sif because Sif would not give us the ring wich alow us to fight the 4 kings willingly because he was worried that we could have the same fate as Artorias. I cry everytime i see that scene when he recognize us and start crying...is like hes saying..."i cant let you do it, if you really want to, you have to kill me first." Why am i crying?
Artorias probably has the saddest story when I saw sif in the game and he recognized who I was I almost started bawling because he didn't want u to face the same fate as artorias his owner
"Prepare to Cry" is a reference to Dark Souls having a "Prepare to Die" edition to its games (forgot which one has it. I think it was DS1) Both of which Sif clearly prepared for. He/she deserved better, but this is a FromSoft game 🥲
I have never played this game but binge watch so much Fromsoft lore videos that I think I might learn more from watching these then playing the games themselves (also, I am fearful of my own incompetence and being overwhelmed for I opened Elden Ring, Bloodborne and Dark Souls just to close it again...). I am glad they did not show the fight between our beloved Doggo and the mc, I do not know if the tears could have been held back if that were the case. Also, please tell me there is a small percentage of people like me whom have attempted or never played the Dark Souls series but is deeply fascinated by its lore?
I find it awesome you can appreciate the lore and story building without playing the games. They're not for everyone but they give you plenty of tools to experiment and find what works best for you. Failure is the best teacher so as long as you're having fun with it, that's all that matters. I would suggest trying it out again
@Dakota Cross Naw, the encouragement I received from you has me smiling and reconsidering an attempt. The funny part is I have looked into the enemies from games as well, researched their lore and movesets, but the character build and items are so vast. I am also not fully aware of the difficulty, for the most challenging game I have played is the Kingdom Hearts series on critical. The Dark Souls series is so different, and small mishaps are punished severely. How did you prepare for the Fromsoft games, and have you succeeded? Thank you again for the encouragement ♡
If you think this is heartbreaking, then the Prepare to Cry: Daughters of Chaos is, in my opinion, even more heartwrenching. This is a bitter tale of a warrior who failed, but never stopped trying, and his dog, who remained ever-loyal. I will also say that I'm glad you keep respectfully quiet during the video with occasional comments, watch it all the way through, then react fully.
Great Grey Wolf Sif was kind of the hardest fight in the game for me after the DLC. Not because it's difficult to do (really it's one of the easier boss fights in the game) but they animated the hell out of that dog. He even starts limbing when he's near death and this is a game that kind of demands your full concentration at all times, so you have to really focus on murdering this dog.
You should definitely react to his dark souls vid on Yhorm the giant and Lady Anri, overall I hope you continue to watch all his prepare to cry series especially the remastered versions
What's truly astounding about the Artoria boss battle is that he only fights with one arm as the other is useless. I can't imagine how hard he'd be with both arms.
I will never get tired of that scene where Gough nailed Kalameet out of the sky with only his ears since he was blind due to the resin in his helmet

(There used to be a mod that would put those lines back in the game, but I think it's gone defunct now.)
He really is the ultimate 'fallen hero' trope in modern gaming.
*Oh Sif.*
*You were truly the Goodest Boy...*
Ciaran actually loved Artorias, and likely never saw that romance through before he fell to the Abyss.
Her corpse, presumably, is lying against the back of Artorias's gravestone, as there you can find the Hornet Ring, which belongs to her.
if you fight Siff after going to the past, he recognizes you has the human who fought with him, that's why he melows when he catches your scent and he knows he has to stop a very dear good friend in the name of duty: 2 friends bound by service and a past fight who now must duel to the death
prepare to cry is taken from the ultimate edition of the game, which was called Dark Souls: prepare to die. base game + DLC
Artorias is my all time favorite from story armor weapons skill and he has a doggo
Prepare to cry is a reference to the Prepare to die edition of dsrksouls1, they are also sad stories nothing in darksouls has a happy ending most of the time someone ends up dead
Definitely not definte please keep reacting to these videos there amazing so are you
19:12 Oh it's even worse.
Oh also, if you want to feel worse. In the Sif fight, she limps and gets less efficient, like falls over and stumbles as she gets hurt.
The "prepare to cry" is a reference to the subtitle of the first games pc rerelease the "prepare to die editon"
Seeing an animal cry always gets me I was close to tears but it's a lovely tale
"Prepare to Cry" is both a reference and a legitimate warning. It refers to the tagline/slogan of the Dark Souls series, which is "Prepare to Die"
I’m just replaying this game rn going for 100%
heartbreaking detail for me, if you listen carefully, you can here Sif whine after he sniffs. He not only knows who you are, but there much doesn't want to do this. But of course, both of you, have a duty to uphold.
the Siegmeyer Prepare to Cry is also a good watch :D
18:36 Yes Artorias did saved Sif and Sif fought along side us to kill Manus just for us to go back years later and kill Sif because Sif would not give us the ring wich alow us to fight the 4 kings willingly because he was worried that we could have the same fate as Artorias. I cry everytime i see that scene when he recognize us and start crying...is like hes saying..."i cant let you do it, if you really want to, you have to kill me first." Why am i crying?
18:20 Prepare to die edition is the definitive addition of the first darksouls game so yes it a play on words.
One of my favourite videos of his.
His videos are always amazing
Love you guys ❤
Atorius is one of my favourite characters in fromsoftwear games along side melana in elden ring
Artorias probably has the saddest story when I saw sif in the game and he recognized who I was I almost started bawling because he didn't want u to face the same fate as artorias his owner
YEAHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHH Thank you, have a nice day.
Artorias is definitely one of their best characters, he's the prime example of how great Fromsoft's writing is!
I would really recommend the Izalith family Prepare to Cry, I think it’s the saddest personally
Please keep reacting to the more lore in games
"Prepare to Cry" is referencing the title of the game: "Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition".
Man, I love the epicness of this game.
Every time I watch this video I cry ngl...
It is here!
"Prepare to Cry" is a reference to Dark Souls having a "Prepare to Die" edition to its games (forgot which one has it. I think it was DS1)
Both of which Sif clearly prepared for. He/she deserved better, but this is a FromSoft game 🥲
If you liked this one you should def check out the remastered about Gwyn and the Daughters of Chaos. Those are really good as well.
Love your videos keep up the good work, also recommend watching prepare to cry Yhorm the giant
haven#t seen it yet, immediate like though. Amazing content choice + I know you'll make it even more entertaining.
The story of sif always makes me tear up... maybe cause im a dog person but it breaks my heart
Sif will always be the goodest boy
Great Grey Wolf Sif was kind of the hardest fight in the game for me after the DLC. Not because it's difficult to do (really it's one of the easier boss fights in the game) but they animated the hell out of that dog. He even starts limbing when he's near death and this is a game that kind of demands your full concentration at all times, so you have to really focus on murdering this dog.
My playthrough after fighting Artorias, I got his armor and had already made his sword...so in a way, Artorias did defeat Manus and save Princess Dusk
Father Gascoigne is also a good one.
You should definitely react to his dark souls vid on Yhorm the giant and Lady Anri, overall I hope you continue to watch all his prepare to cry series especially the remastered versions
Please do the Elden Ring Frenzied Flame Prepare to Cry video aswell!! Its the best one personally!

What's truly astounding about the Artoria boss battle is that he only fights with one arm as the other is useless. I can't imagine how hard he'd be with both arms.
He's also fighting with his off-hand. Artorias is left-handed, but he's fighting you right-handed. Food for thought.
Best. Souls. Character. Ever.
This is the best story and saddest 😢
