Why you should use an iPad for your Electronic Drums

  • I got my iPad 9th generation for $299 at Walmart but they've since gone up in price there, so right now looks like apple.com is the best price for $329. You could also check the current prices on Amazon using this link amzn.to/3o2gdXl. In my opinion the iPad is the best bang for your buck accessory for your electronic drum set. GarageBand gives you a fully capable DAW with realistic MIDI drums that you can control with your e-drum kit. In addition to that is has a full suite of plugins and virtual instruments. All you need is a cable to connect from your drum module to the iPad, like this one amzn.to/3H7IZNF, and some headphones and you have a complete home recording studio! If you want a REALLY cheap way to record audio directly into GarageBand, here's the $10 iRig amzn.to/3o2PFFf. If you plan on recording MIDI only, you won't need this.

AVOID THE IPAD 10th GEN! Basically, Apple removed literally everything from the new iPads that made them so great. They got rid of the audio jack, and the lightning port! They currently still sell the 9th gen (the one in this video), so get that one if you're looking to buy. If you want to use a 10th Gen or Pro, you'll need multiple adapters and dongles.

Thanks for the advice. I have a very old mini iPad with an old iOS. It has Garage Band. But the problem is that it ceased to recognize the midi devices I attached to the generic lighting cable I used. This happened after one update. I think Apple does this on purpose to make one buy the newer Gen iPads.

Justin , I just wanted to take a minute to say thank you (and Kevin Williams) for inspiring me to get back into the drums after a thirty year break. The evolution of his Alesis Nitro has been extremely informative. Also, all of your informative videos with the good and bad out there regarding edrums and your overall experience and know-how with music helped to push me over the edge. So, after two days of reviews / links /add to cart / remove from cart / lists / videos etc., I took the plunge. I took a bit of a different path than Kevin did though. I didn't want to get a kit then add to it. My research on it showed that to be far more costly in the long run. So today, I purchased TWO drum sets off of Amazon one being a larger kit, the other smaller. The large kit is the eight piece mesh from Lyx and the smaller is an Alesis Turbo mesh. I chose the Lyx over the Nitro mesh for a couple of reasons. It has a ten inch snare and all the tom pads are dual triggered plus a pretty robust rack. The drum module features are quite similar to the nitros also. Lastly, although I suspect both company's drum pads came from the same factory by their looks, the Lyx's pads resemble those of the Alesis Surge kit. The smaller Alesis kit was a no brainer to be the add on as they've proven to be winners across the board. The small kit comes this Sunday and the larger on Tuesday (out the door cost with a few doo-dads was about $700). I spent about three hours drawing out a mockup of the combined kit to include rearranging tube positions and arranging the pad/cymbals and it should be pretty cool if it turns out the way I've engineered it. I've never used my UA-cam page really but I am going to change that and post a video of the build to keep all informed. Again, thank you for all that you've done and, keep up the good work! - Todd PS- you've got a hell of a shirt collection!

    Wow dude !!!
I just watched a few of your videos.
I remember when you got your Alesis Nitro...lol
I've been following you for a while.
I just ordered the TD 27 module and digital snare, and have the TD-17kvx.
It's good to see we both have decent sets now.
    Hehehehehe
I want to connect them when it comes, and add more drums.
I was wondering what the best way to do that is.
Chain them with midi, or use a mixer ?
Not a lot of videos about it on UA-cam.
And it's strange how limited edrums are as far as adding pads or cymbals.
If you have time, I'm sure people would perhaps be interested in learning more about that if you experimented with it.
But I think I might get an iPad now to record after watching this.
    Thanks for your videos !!!
    Really big help !!!
    Have a great day !!!

Using this setup I’ve always had issues with midi trigger timing in GarageBand plus there’s no way to sync some drums up to the GarageBand app , the hi hat control is impossible , plus no adjustments can be made , you make it look plug in simple , but we all know that’s not the case ! If only ! . Quantisation off , still causes major issues , quantisation on , it’s missing the rolls lol , so far I’ve not fixed these issues , so always have to record live acoustic drums . A video on these issues ( that most people experience) would be nice and educational. If you’ve not had issues , your a very lucky man . 👍👍

Yeah I have a WIDIBUD hooked up to my kit and simply plug and play through Bluetooth. Multi tracks, has far superior sounds than my kit, I can add effect chains to my independent channels… I mean, it’s just a dream, especially considering that even the WIDIBUD is more expensive than any drum app you might need (or all of them together actually), so if you already have an iPad or iPhone it’s a just a match made in heaven

Been wanting to steer clear of EZ Drummer and other expensive options. This video was great! All I want to do is improve the quality of the drum sounds during my practice. Subbed!
    Two questions:
    1. If I understood the video correctly, once I connect my iPad to the Alesis module with the cable seen in the video all I need to do is plug a pair of headphones or speakers into the aux port on the iPad, right? Again--not trying to do anything too fancy. Just want one or two good sounding kits to hear while practicing instead of listening to the terrible stock module sounds. Don't really ever plan to record anything either.
    2. What was the difference from clip at 9:42 and the second clip at 10:53? First clip sounded better. Might be a noob question!

    • @demonicsweaters
      @demonicsweaters  Рік тому +2

Thanks for commenting! #1 - yep. You may need to possibly adjust some midi notes in the nitro module if things don't map correctly, but it should be fine. #2 - Clip 1 is the built-in sounds in Garageband, clip 2 is the module sounds recorded into Gargageband via audio input.

I have bought from Amazon 2 different types of adaptor to fit on the USB cable provided and neither seem to work .
1 Does the connector have to be an authentic apple product ?
Apple products are expensive and I do not want to buy something that still doesn't work.
2 is there a specific setting on the nitro mesh or garageband to enable a midi connection.

There’s a couple beat making DAWs and a few multitrack apps, but nothing nearly as robust as what is available for iOS. I do have an old Samsung tablet, maybe I can see if I can find something worth using, but it’s unlikely you’ll be able to control drums in real-time via midi on Android. It’s just the design of Android at its core is not ideal for audio.
