its strange to sit here at the age of 37 and remember how this song made me feel when I was listening to it on smoke breaks, working overnights at Walgreens as a 17 year old kid. It meant the world to me as a lonely teenager. It still makes sense, just tougher to digest now. Hope all you people are well.
48 and first time seeing this with an orchestra, I still get chills hearing this. Some many feeling running thru especially now in these trying times.
What a shame this jerk now wears a dress
@@buttsniffa7469 people should be free to dress how they want, that doesn't bother me at all
@@maeaomalley972 if you believe that then you're a disgrace.
@@buttsniffa7469 sure, thanks lol
Last year, I showed this to my parents, who were both over 70. I printed out the lyrics in large type on several pieces of paper so they could follow along. They both teared up, just as I always do, and absolutely loved it.
My dad passed away completely unexpectedly a few months later. I’m so thankful for that memory. That was my last trip home before he passed, so it’s one of my final ones.
Good on you for making it elder-friendly, you’re a good son/daughter.
I'm very sorry for your loss. Growing up I got tons of crap from my parents because of my "choices and attitude" not lining up with theirs. They always wondered what's going on in my head, so one day I printed the lyrics for this and just left them where I knew they'd find them. I'd love to say it made some kind of difference, but when you grow up in a family that thinks it's still the mid 1950s, and you're the way I am, understanding will always be just out of reach.
It's amazing to hear this as a 617 year old vampire with two kids and still have the same emotional effect on me as when i used to listen to it as a 17 year old in the 1400's in transilvania while working a stable boy tending for the horses of my lord.
woah man I can so relaaaaaate! I was listening to this 4532 years ago also and now that time passed, I can even go outside and play with my half vampire kids! Inclusivity is everything maaaaaaaaaan! Thank you so much for sharing your age on youtube!!!

Making me feel bad for only knowing that song for 24 years🥴
Never thought we'd make it past 350 bro
Smelly killed it in this, very underrated drummer.
🤘🏼Every punk drummer in the last 30 years is biting his style🤘🏼
yes man!
Omg. So underrated. Those crisp double kicks with a single pedal and kick drum, no sliding or fancy tricks, just pure meat 🥓
Underrated? Stop smoking what you're smoking.
Who under-rating him?
Erik Sandin is criminally underrated as a drummer. Not many people could play so fast and clean, especially with a single bass pedal.
Absolutely. He's the best drummer in all of punk us argue. As a drummer, the finnesse he has, also with the amount of punch, while using really not much energy, is not something a lot of ppl do.its hard. I've watched drum covers and ppl get burnt out by the end of songs.they just dont have the chops. As smelly gotten older his posture on the kit and his train like steam are bizarre. You'd think hed be slower/sloppier, but he's better than he's ever been on the kit. Vids from 92 make him look like a different guy playing.slouched.dreads.sweating.still on time but seemingly having a harder time doing so . now Sure a Travis barker has all the tommy lee flare, but smelly could outplay him and out stamina him as well
Couldn’t agree more.
@@ikadane 👍 cheers bud
D Dub He is great but better than Josh Freese?

Since most clubs only let you play like 15-20 mins, it would actually be pretty cool to start a NOFX cover band, then just play the decline
This is absolutely amazing!! Made this 40 year old punk kid tear up a little!

Happened again with this 40 year old punk kid as well! Wasn´t the first time with this video.

This is the most effort Mike has put into a live performance in a decade
can’t fault him for being jaded but this is the best NOFX song ever written and they have a full orchestra behind them.
Yeah, saw Nofx just a month before this performance and it was pretty bad. Best song ever
He picked a good time to pull it together... Hats off to Smelly though. I know they've played it live many times but the stamina is incredible for a song so rapid-fire with as many changes. Damn!
Couldn’t agree more. Must of not drank for this one. Last time I saw them he was forgetting lyrics 🤣
@Dan Evertt he DID mention it would be a recorded LIVE album...

Clearly the best EP I ever bought. I had no idea they could do it better live. With an orchestra. Brilliant performance.
That's odd, I hear they suck live! No, wait, guess they DON'T!
This song used to pump me up, now I'm 45 and a father of two. I can't stop crying. The song's meaning is the same but the fact it is still relevant makes me angrier than it used to. Timeless music from a timeless band. I am just sad the idiots took over and we can't seem to take it back.
Don’t cry

Not that I care….
@@danevertt3210 Not autotune, but the vocals were def over-dubbed in a studio. You can't fault him, though, imo. He performs best in studio, and I think in his mind this is the definitive "The Decline". Probably just wanted it to sound better

NoFX giving more than 60%
I couldnt be more agree
Lol
Yeah..i agree..around 72 1/2 percent
I'd like to hear the actual live audio track from this performance. this is obviously after major overdubs and a re-recording of all of the vocal tracks in the studio. That, plus they add in all of the effects on the voice and even used drum samples. I'd like to know what parts they actually kept from the live performance. I'm not knocking them in any way..I'm just interested. We all know live albums and most live productions aren't actually live. Usually the drums tracks are kept in order to keep the live feeling, but that's it. But in this, it is obvious that even some of the drums were re-recorded or replaced with samples.
Michael R. ... yeah, I think about this often... like how Tom Delonge can barely play 50% of the notes correctly on his guitar typically, yet crushed the blink-182 live album... or Jason Cruz not missing a note singing on Strung Out’s live album, when typically his vocal range is suuuper limited when playing live... makes you wonder how much is corrected, or even redone, in post-production eh?
at warped tour in Houston 2006, NOFX was playing last and there was a serious Texas storm coming in. Kevin Lyman got up and apologised to the crowd and said they had to cut the show short as it was getting too dangerous to keep playing, and that NOFX could do one more song. They played The Decline in full
I would drag my balls over a field of barbed wire to have been at that show

Did you get to see them on their last run?
If NOFXs trajectory was a movie, this would be the climax scene. This is NOFX's Live Aid.
Those dudes have each come such an amazingly long way from the start of NOFX to this moment. From living in cars, being the "worst band in punk", living in squats, overcoming loss, almost dying from drugs, and much more. Through it all NOFX survived became better, toured the world, and are playing to sold out crowds almost 40 years later and all of it without breaking up. Who would have thought? Certainly not them. After all those years:
- I still know the lyrics and
- I still feel them so
- I still play the song loud enough my neighbors don't miss this masterpiece, even though
- I still sing along and do the mouth trumpet even though I am horrible at both.
Also:
- "the decline" still is the one song that gives me an idea of how patriotism must feel when the "national anthem" plays - I feel connected to all the fellow punks, nonconformist, hippies and queers and I am proud of me and everyone who resisted all temptations of greed and never sold their integrity for money or power
- Mike still can wear everything
- Eric still getting more attractive every year , so
- I still would be happy to be his sex-slave

I remember when I first heard this in 2001. I was drinking beer alone after work one night in my shitty apartment that looked out on nothing but wheat fields on the outskirts of Pullman, WA. I was poor, felt like the only person in town my age who wasn't going to school. I had a 13" black and white tv with dials that made a satisfying thunk when you changed the channel, which I didn't do much since my antenna only picked up ABC and 2 different PBS stations. There was this college radio station I found coming out of WSU that had a weekly punk show I would listen to, and the guy on there played this song, and that is the story of how you found songs that stayed with you forever back when you didn't even have a computer.

The older I get the more important and meaningful this song becomes. When I was in high school i loved it because of how the music sounded but now in my 30's the lyrics stand out way more and sadly it's all still relevant in 2021.
I watch this every few months just because it makes me smile
That violin guy on the top row center left was feeling it so hard. Every time I saw him he was jumping around about to start a pit with the other violinists.
Would have been so epic.
I would have.
Would have
Could have
Should have
I was there!!!!!! 🍻
So glad I was at this show!!! Also had backstage passes!!!
Lucky bastard! It's an epic masterpiece.
For a band that's supposed to be rough around the edges, they sure know how to write a song and perform a song. LONG LIVE NOFX
I once heard Fat Mike interviewed that they were playing a festival and were coming close to the end of their time, the festival promoter told Fat Mike, they can only play one more song... Fat Mike and nofx played; The Decline. That is just awesome!
Yes, they had to cut the set short because of really bad weather. "Short" 😏
As a festival production manager, I would not have liked to be in that guy's shoes.
I heard it was Warped.
GrapeHate haha completely understand that!
It happened at Riot Fest in ‘14 too. The festival cut em off about 10 min in..
I was 15 when this released! 24 years ago! I still get goose bumps even when I play this in my head! I'm loving reading these comments! stay safe ya'll! But not too safe 😉
masterpiece! i could listen to this a million times and never be tired of it. It's so beautifully done by both NOFX and Baz and his orchestra. There are parts of this lightning ina bottle that literally give me chills everytime I hear them.
The Decline, Ultra Ska Edition
I have never commented on a UA-cam video. But this was fucking amazing.
Fucking amazing indeed
