Where are all the stupid people from?
And how'd they get to be so dumb?
Bred on purple mountain range
Feed amber waves of grains
To lesser human beings, zero feelings
Blame it on
Human nature, mans destiny (mans destiny)
Blame it on the greediocracy (greediocracy)
Fear of God
The fear of change
The fear of truth
Add the Bill of Rights, subtract the wrongs
There's no answers
Memorize and sing star spangled songs
When the questions
Aren't ever asked
Is anybody learning from the past?
We're living in united stagnation
Father what have I done?
I took that .22
A gift to me from you
To bed with me each night
Kept it clean
Polished it well
Cherished every cartridge, every shell
Down, by the creek, under brush, under dirt
There's a carcass of my second kill
Down, by the park, under stone, under pine
There's a carcass of my brother William
Brother where, have you gone to?
I swear, I never thought I could
I see so many times
They told me to shoot straight
Don't pull the trigger, squeeze
That will insure a kill
A kill is what you want
A kill is why we breed
The Christians love their guns
The church and NRA
Pray for their salvations
Prey on the lower faiths
The story book's been read
And every line believed
Curriculum's been set
Logic is a threat
Reason searched and seized
Jerry spent some time in Michigan
A twenty year vacation, after all he had a dime
A dime is worth a lot more in Detroit
A dime in California, a twenty dollar fine
Jerry only stayed a couple months
It's hard to enjoy yourself while bleeding out the ass
Asphyxiation is simple and fast
It beats seventeen fun years of being someone's bitch
Don't think (Stay)
Drink your wine (Home)
Watch the fire burn (Be)
His problems not mine (Safe)
Just be that model citizen
I wish I had a schilling
(For each senseless killing)
For every senseless killing
I'd buy a government
America's for sale
And you can get a good deal on it
(A good deal on it)
And make a healthy profit
Or maybe, tear it apart
Start with assumption
That a million people are smart
Smarter than one
Serotonin's gone
She gave up, drifted away
Sara fled, thought process gone
She left her answering machine on
The greeting left spoken sincere
Messages no one will ever hear
Ten thousand messages a day
A million more transmissions lay
Victims of the laissez faire
Ten thousand voices, a hundred guns
A hundred decibels turns to one
One bullet, one empty head
Now with Serotonin gone
The man who used to speak
Performs a cute routine
Feel a little patronized
Don't feel bad
They found a way inside your head
And you feel a bit misled
It's not that they don't care, yeah
The television's put a thought inside your head
Like a Barry Manilow, jingle
I'd like, to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony
A symphonic blank stare, yeah
It doesn't make you care (make you care)
Not designed to make you care (make you care)
They're betting you won't care (you won't...)
Place a wager on your greed
A wager on your pride
Why try to beat them when, a million others tried?
We are the whore
Intellectually spayed
We are the queer
Dysfunctionally raised
One more pill to kill the pain
One more pill to kill the pain
One more pill to kill the pain
Living through conformity
One more prayer to keep me safe
One more prayer to keep us warm
One more prayer to keep us safe
There's gonna be a better place
Lost the battle, lost the war
Lost the things worth living for
Lost the will to win the fight
One more pill to kill the pain
Na na na na na
La na na na na
Na na na na na
Na na na na na
The going get tough, the tough get debt
Don't pay attention, pay the rent
Next of kins pay for your sins
A little faith should keep us safe
Save us
The human, existence
Is failing, resistance
Essential, the future
Written off, the odds are
Astronomically against us
Only moron and genius
Would fight a losing battle
Against the super ego
When giving in is so damn comforting
And so we go, on with our lives
We know the truth, but prefer lies
Lies are simple, simple is bliss
Why go against tradition when we can
Admit defeat, live in decline
Be the victim of our own design
The status quo, built on suspect
Why would anyone stick out their neck?
Fellow members of
Club "We've Got Ours"
I'd like to introduce you to our host
He's got his, and I've got mine
Meet the decline
We are the queer
We are the whore
Ammunition
In the class war
We are worker
We love our queen
We sacrifice
We're soilent green
We are the queer
We are the whore
Ammunition
In the class war

Here is tracklist in case you're wondering:
0:00 The Decline
lol thank you
Omg thank u I've been wondering what that song was called for so long
***** Ohmigosh hey, it's been forever! Mary's fine, just haven't heard from her in a while, she moved out a few months ago. How's Harold?
No idea, man. Time just flies. And yeah, I'm not surprised really - that's just Harold for you.
+Luke Horror this is the first personal convo i've ever seen on youtube 9+ years
I measure time by this song. One Decline to cook a frozen pizza. Two Declines to drive to work. Etc.
I was just about to laugh at this then move on, then I realized that I've actually done that a couple times.
Hahahaha yes, for me it's one Decline to shower
Fuck yes
That's how I measure classes by the song ends class is over
i am lucky for me now it´s One Decline to work.
Back in the day, I used to think this song was the finest 18 minutes of punk rock ever recorded. Almost 25 years in, I have to say my opinion has changed a little, because in actuality, this is the finest 18 minutes of music ever recorded.
As a fan of both Pink Floyd and NOFX, I can't agree... But 25 years later, I still think it's the best Punk Rock song ever... Epic... NOFX are the Bosses.
This is what I like about Punk. Short and sweet.
+Bradwick83 Right??
this song isn't really short, but it is really damn sweet
+BROandGOAT I think that was sarcasim
+Phi robin no shit

)
I saw NOFX play all of Punk in Drublic at riot fest a few years back. After they finished, they said “Ok, the festival said we have time for one more song!” And started playing the Decline for about 15 minutes until they literally just shut the sound off. One of the countless reasons I fucking love this band.
we did that for years every weekend at the local caffe bar here in Croatia, and every time the owner lady said "one more song", we put Decline on, turn off the monitor with a screensaver password left on and the pogo begins.
when she said that, she grabbed the heavy tray and waited for the song to finish. crazy pogos were held there, but with every glass and bottle of the caffe left intact. you wreck shit, you get out and you're happy if you don't get the tray over your back. we were all afraid of her as she is our own mother
now, thinking of it, I realize that all of us were young enough and didn't realize that she knew how long this song was. but what was really important is that she enjoyed watching us being happy. and that was the whole point.
dear Sylvia, thank you for giving us the place where we can create our own story for years, in a town where that kind of stuff was kinda imaginable at the beginning of the 2000s in a small town like ours here in Croatia. we understand that now.
all of us will be the 'parents in need' for your children in their best years. our parents could sleep well and not even worry about us when they knew we're at your place. we'll do the same for you and your kids now.

I saw them playing "The Decline" yesterday in Barcelona! Oh yeeeeeeaaahhhh!
Epic

This song is a timeless masterpiece, even more meaningful now today than it was when the EP released 23 years ago.
Remember it CLEARLY at age 21. My life is slipping through my fingers.
gets more actual each day, unfortunately
No, that can't be right. 23 years? The hell happened?
@@klaus-bernhardvomend594 I don't think he's telling the truth. Or it's some kind of reference...
Fuck, I just looked it up and they're right. They released this in 1999. My world is rearranged.
This is my 4 year olds favorite song. Just ordered him a nofx tee for Christmas. Raising him right
Listening to punk in the car and the wife says "one more song and it's my turn to pick the music".
Ok! Last song....
hahaha I did that on my dec 25 souper with my family.... They were not happy! The Decline!
I dont understand why my girl doesnt like punk. I love it.
My boyfriend only listens to mumble rap😕
@@blacklight310 Change him. Right now.
Ha! Well played sir
If you feel emotional when you listen to this it means you still have some human left. empathy over apathy.
Gary Wilson But not to be confused with sympathy.
Gary Wilson true
I feel like a fucking robot that keeps doing my duties and being sucessful for sake of nothing that i can remember. And life flows, and flows and flows.
Eddington Rocha examine what you're doing and why you're doing it. If you can't find a damn good reason, stop. Find a new thing to do. Life is short, so you better make the best of it. For everyone's sake. Not just yours.
Wait. What are those things he was talking about. Feel-ings?
NOFX are a great bunch of guys. I had the pleasure of opening up for them a few times in the late ‘80s.
In the early 2000s they did benefit concerts in Portland OR, to help my *sister pay off her chemotherapy bills. They literally gave her an extra decade of life.
I wish more people were as decent, and free thinking a they are.
Jen said “It’ll be okay.”❤️
That's so awesome!
making me tear up listening to this rn
As ignorant as they can be at times, deep down they enjoy seeing others happy.
That's rad man!
they care
23 years later and still 100% relevant
Oh god
best nofx ever
It's gonna become an historical document to explain what went wrong.
People are more convinced of their truths than ever, but it feels like they are more ignorant than ever.
More relevant than ever
2020, meet the decline

i feel deja vu cus i posted this earlier this year
@@bugsshillelagh3179 i sure hope so man maybe we'll come outta this with some meaningful progress towards a better future though

Two guys are standing in an alley, and one asks "What's punk?"
The second one kicks over a trash can and says "This is punk."
The first guy kicks over another trash can and says "This is punk?"
The second says "No, that's being trendy."
+Troy Link Copypaste is trendy
+Najeeb al-shabibi lol
yeah that has fuck all to do with being punk.
I heard Billie Joe say that in some documentary.

Thanks for releasing this - 16 year old me loved this tune and had it on a cassette player wrapped in tape skating around. Oblivious.
38 year old me just listended and honestly brought tears to my eyes.

Almost the same about me, but Im 40 years old now...Everything else matches.

I couldn’t agree more it’s like they time traveled all that way to warned us! We didn’t listen!! Music is the only answer left!! Play on the horn, The Decline!!
just happened to me. Was my favorite song as a teen. Just played it and smiled and cried for 18 minutes. Best shit ever
Can't believe this song has a commercial break in it. Another victim of the greediocracy.
🤑
Always love coming back to this song.
So come back for another run !
The Decline is simple the ultimate essence of Punk Rock, THE "Punk Rock Manifesto" I'd say. A masterpiece that'll be remembered for ever.
I agree 100%
Listening to this during the pandemic. Makes sense now like it did back then.
Just found it . So glad I did 🙂 love these guys
Found it a few weeks back, total banger
good music is timeless
Actually got me emotional haven't listened to NOFX a few years.
Has this on repeat for a few months now.
Gotta stay angry for when it's time to go out and fix this.
2020... still here, still listening.
🍻too 20 years of awesomeness thanks nofx
Me too. I started listening in 2017.
Will this song ever ends ?
More relevant than when they out it out NY freshman year
2024 still going on strong.
I wonder if my 6% battery will last the whole song.
Elp Smith did it make it? it took 5% of mine lol
+Gerry Spaeth. Nah I was able to go get my charger though so it was good
Elp Smith my fingers are crossed for you you will have yer eyes open to that Barry Mantelow n bleeding out the brown
i hope so!
I'm getting rid of my cell, no need.
As an ex squatter gutter punk, marked for life with punx on my knuckle, tattoo on face etc. sure there is way way more punk music then this, but fat mike and nofx, created this beautiful song, its 10/10, its totally nofx, its brilliant throughout. I bought this album in my young teens and was not dissapointed. thank you uploader for making this nostalgic greatness cross my path again.
“Can I have a dollar?”

punk really has the power to cure depression doesn't it
There is something calming about knowing someone feels the same way as you do. Helps to not feel alone as we shuffle through this mortal coil.

legend is they recorded it perfectly on the first attempt
Masterpiece of music.
Just epic song that will always stand the test of time. A band is truly lucky to ever make any song like that, nevermind an 18 minute punk rock masterpiece. A true one of one.
Warped Tour ‘06 in Dallas, a bad storm had kicked up and NoFX was told their set would be cut short. They could play five songs, so they went into The Decline. When they finished they asked, “We still have four more, right?” It was epic.
I was there!

Jesus, what an epic, albeit depressing as shit anthem. God I love NOFX. One of my favorite bands of all time. I just get so fuckin sad that I've loved them since I was 7, now I'm almost 25, and the world is even more fucked than when I first heard them.
Jeremy Thomas at the dawn of time humans were claiming shit is more fucked than ever... at the very first moment! unfuckinbelievable you humans are!
Jeremy Thomas You'd think we'd have our shit figured out by now. Over a decade of war with no end in sight, and the decline of America. Shit sucks, and I thought things would look brighter by now, but things just look more and more fucked up as time goes on.
b42w4242 It's sad people care more about celebrities than the fact our government is arming radical jihadists and Mexican drug cartels. And yes, more wars to come.
Ya life gets shittier and shitter as you age and so does the world.
@Gonzisonsbc... Ya I know... Most (key word most) people in the US are fucking ignorant and if it doesn't affect them then they don't care... They would rather follow Kim Kardashians hair styles then give a fuck about innocent children, women and men brutally murderd by weapons supplied by their own country. It's a very fucking sad and pathetic way to live.
goodbye nofx and thanks for all the songs ☺️ we all literally grew up with it,It has been so good seeing you in these years and at last show in Milan Italy ✌️☺️ have a good life

The trumpet and bass line 👌
It probably is. I know nothing of horns. But dat horn doe. If Righteous Indignation had a sound, that would be it.
David Hoffnung yeah it's 100% trombone
It's actually a valve trombone which is kind of like the bastard child of a trumpet+trombone affair. The tubing is longer than a trumpet, similar to a trombone, but it uses valves instead of a slide.

First time I listened to this song: I cried
Second time: Same
Every time after: Same
There's just so much here, so much emotion built up to an exploding point. I know it doesn't necessarily _sound_ like a "crying" song, but dammit, that's just the direction my brain goes in.
Mine too. My brain is wired to cry when I feel something strongly, whether it's music that I love, or just laughing hard.
Brings so many different emotions. So powerful
Same
I've listened to this song so many times I can sing it word for word.. NOFX will always be my favorite band.

I've had the privilege of watching this set a hand full of times live.
Only once have I've seen Fat Mike get all the words right lol.
Dont worry bro. Just look in the pit and find me singing along and knowing every word, rift, beat.
I cant imagine doing a 20 minute set. Smellys arms must feel like rubber by the end.
I have had the same experience, every time I’ve seen this live he’s flubbs it royally usually right before the “Saratonin’s gone….” breakdown, if anything it’s incredible he plays all those bass lines and sings at the same time…..! The line he plays moments before they rip into “place a wager on your freedom, wager on your pride…” is incredibly difficult on its own aside from after 4 measures he sings over it, quite passionately might I sneak in there……With me always since a tender 14 years old, many moons ago. So long and thanks for all the shoes guys…..
Reporting in on 4/16/20. I used to listen to this song a lot in high school during 2002 and let me tell you, sadly nothing has changed. I hope if you read this in the future things are vastly different. Aww, who am I kidding....he's got his and I've got mine, meet the decline... :(

Listening to this today after all this time makes me realize we've learned absolutely nothing from the mistakes of our past. The decline is even steeper than it was when this EP was released in 1999 with no apparent signs of improving. Cheers to the downfall of humanity y'all.
dont think..... drink your wine
I agree. Still we are still here to make for a better today. Oi!
yes dude, I feel a little bit sorry for humanity too. this song was written before 9-11 and it was miles before it happened. and yeah most people of us are right except all stupid ones out there and sick goverments.

We know the truth, but prefer lies
Lies are simple, simple is bliss
Why go against tradition when we can
Admit defeat, live in decline
Be the victim of our own design
The status quo, built on suspect
Why would anyone stick out their neck?"
This gives me the chills every time.
He's got his, and I've got mine....
Been like this for a long time on both sides of politics. Until the masses unite under a new party and say no to the war on on drugs, no to to wars overseas, no to the federal reserve and no to welfare we are fucked.
Johnny Five You're going to be waiting for a long time for the left to agree to "no welfare". Unlike you soulless rabid dogs on the right, we care about people who have no means to care for themselves. We ain't changing for the likes of you. So BITE ME.
IKR? Same here, goosebumps over that piece...
Extremely relevant.
The first and only time I saw NOFX play was at the 2006 Van's Warped Tour in Dallas, Tx. It was a blisteringly hot summer day in July. NOFX was the final act of the day on the main stage. Looking around the crowd that day revealed a sea of dehydrated and sunburnt punk rockers as far as the eye could see. NOFX was only a few songs into their set before a thunderstorm started rolling in. The wind quickly picked up, stirring up all the trash on the ground and pelting the crowd with dirt. Then down came the rain with lightning and thunder in the distance. Most of the crowd dispersed once it started raining. NOFX was still playing, so I decided to stay. It didn't take too long before some official looking guy ran out on stage and chatted with the band. Fat Mike came back up to the mic and said that due to the weather they could only play one more song. They proceeded to play The Decline. By the time the song was done the storm had passed over so they said screw it and completed their set. It was amazing! I wasn't all that familiar with NOFX at the time. I was there to see Rise Against. I became a NOFX fan that day!
I was 53years old . You are my spiritual band..
Best NOFX song imo
The best song of all-time as well.
FUCK THAT SHIT PUNKS SPOSED TO BE HARD AND FAST YA FEEL ME HOW AM I SPOSED TO HOLD ATTENSHUN FOR 20 FUCKIN MINITS?
ZombiEBenoiT Haha.
ZombiEBenoiT howrusuposedtospeleither?
Chris Bredesen EH!?
I saw then once, and they opened with this song. What a show!
i heard they suck live
@@lavinskyjr4984 actually they've gotten worse
They played a shortened version when I saw them in '02. I'm sure like any group of humans they have good days and bad days, but when I saw them they were great.
Not that you go to see any punk band to see the greatest musical recital, that is..
Major chills on the last stanza, thinking about how this relates to our world and way of thinking today
They opened with this in Toronto a bunch of years ago.. The place came unglued .5 seconds into the intro.
It took all of 4 seconds to lose my shoe and I spent the next hour and a half going wild, one foot soaked from the sweat raining off the roof. Good times
Masterpiece.
Revisiting.. still a Masterpiece !
@@monos33 still a masterpiece!
There is some masterful word play going on here
RIP Awesome Donald. July 31st, 1984 - August 31st, 2023
Am truly sorry to hear and my condolences,us 1984 bunch won't be around munch longer were got sold the lie with the truth in front of us.
My freshman HS algebra teacher actually sung "don't call me white" in front of the whole class when me and a friend won a contest and we got to make him do "anything within reason to greet the clas" then later in the year him and the other math teachers played this song during lunchtime in one of the other teachers rooms. This was like 2006 probably. Edit, I just looked him up online, and he's credited with starting two different rock and punk programs associated with the school band way back in the same years, I want to reconnect with him, so badass
*This song will never get old and will always be one of the greatest*
was prolly 15 or more years ago, my friend chase skated up to one of our spots/ he handed me this cd with out the case, and u could see through the cd, i never seen that before, and he knew i liked NOfX more than him i guess lol. but he gave it to me. and ill never forget that.
RIP chase
march 14 1989 - july 6 2019
thanks for the cd and all the memories good or bad. i realize sometimes there was a darker side to CCB, but that doesnt make us any different in my book.

What can I say - to Chase?
A cousin of mine, we used to go out once in a while. Not sure he realized what music was, before he died, but, he died.. And fuck, it was shit.
I've probably spent a year of my life in total listening to this song.
I remember buying this when it first came out. I was 16 and thought it was their new album (it was harder to keep up with what bands were doing in those days, pre social media etc).
Me and my friend Stu played it as soon as we got home and I remember the initial wave of disappointment when I realised there was actually only 1 track on it. That disappointment soon gave way to awe when we heard this masterpiece and understood what an ambitious and amazing piece of writing this was and is. Still my favourite thing NOFX have ever done.
I'm proud to say I have seen them play it live too.
i miss going to the record store ( Sam Goodys, Strawberrys, Tower Records, FYE ,ect) you would find some cool shit there- it was a process. now its a sterile environment of music imo.
9:44 and I still get goosebumps after all these years. thanks guys :)
Anyone as old as we are, bask in the shade of NOFX, to cool the F off once and a while...To remember what we did as teenagers, while raising our own.
Remember being 13 and still having the stamina to cover this song?
Hahahahahaha. Classic. My friends and I spent like a month learning this. No way I could even have the strength to play it once through right now.
@@kevinconnor6035 Sorry to see and hear that you got fat and useless.. unless you're 60-70 years old?
If 60 or 70 years old, all is good
@@kolortv I was just joking about getting older, but I wouldn't expect you to miss the chance to be an asshole.
I am neither fat nor useless though. Thanks for your concern.
Were getting the band back together for a jam tomorrow, I haven't played drums for 6 years....we're doing this. Should be interesting.
NOFX...like BR way before theyr time with the lyrics. I signed the decline when i was a teenager, now i am 33 and the lyrics are still perfect...all around the world.
When I first heard this album I was in Germany in the military. Lasted the whole bus ride every morning at 5am. Good times. 🎉
Me and my wife listened to this every Sunday afternoon when we were first married, then today I introduced my 2.5 year old to it and he loved every single second. Dancing away, drumming on anything around, and joining in with Melvins yelling lol. I couldnt be prouder
