So Smelly said that it was only touring that was ending and that they would still be making music, which is it? NOFX will end, or just the live performances?
Great explanation. I busted my ass an gained financial freedom creating my dream business. One thing I noticed was that I had no more excuses. Here I was sitting in a home I always dreamed of, had cars I always dreamed of, but I was lonely and depressed. Previously, I could blame it all on other things and life circumstances. Once there's nothing left to blame you have to face yourself and fix you.
Hey, if you set out to make plenty of dough and you actually did it, you still kick ass. As for the loneliness part, remember that most of normal everyday conversation is basically bitching about money and not having enough of it, so yeah you're going to be a bit lonely if making money is something you DON'T suck at. Just a fluke of human nature.
Definitely a pendulum. We swing on one huge arc chasing to get to the financial finish line - most of us don’t hit it - and if you do, you start swinging the other way to one day hit the peak of our deep selves and exactly what you say - fixing ourselves.
I'm saying this as a friend and as someone who cares deeply for you... the day you walk through those arches you're dead to me. That's it. We're never speaking again and that's on you.
Fat Mike, you brought a lot of happiness to a lot of people in Orlando yesterday!! Regarding Codefendants, I liked their live show better than the album. A lot of energy that needs to be translated to the album better. I see plenty of potential in the act!
i know this is just a snippet of the interview, but what a weird way to cut off... Sad NOFX is retiring, Glad Fat Mike is doing what he enjoys...looking forward to the reunion in 15yrs....
Well, Mike I'll tell ya one thing: I was at the Punk Rock Museum a couple weekends ago, I was already in Vegas for an unrelated reason. Walking through there and seeing everything, all this was stuff that was connected to some very important times in my life made me so fucking happy I got a little emotional. You put events in motion to where I got to play one of your old basses and one of Fletcher's old guitars. Me and one of your guys flipped around Jason's old bass amp to see which ones they were. I got to see old show flyers from Gillman St. I came backdown stairs and you were chilling at the table closest to the stairway having lunch, aside from being too chicken shit to say hi, its a rule of mine you don't hassle a guy while he's having fucking lunch.
His whole outlook seems really biased. No offense or anything... maybe the dude needs to try staying in a really small southern town or something. Ya know... get out of the city. That attitude he's talking about?... that is NOT how it is when you don't live literally shoulder to shoulder and ass to feet in some city. I found that out REAL fuckin quick. Never hated on my little town ever again.
His perspective on „Europe“ (already an incredibly broad stroke) is clearly influenced by only meeting people on tour. There are the same „you gotta have success“ factors over here as over there.
It's sad, but it's all good. Life changes, people need to switch things up and do new things. And also sometimes great things can get old later in life. Nothing lasts forever. But that's part of what makes it all so great. Every song has an ending. And then you start again new.
No one in America is shunned for what Fat Mike is referring to as a "wasted life". He seems to live in 2 worlds here. In one he's clearly living how he wants and is literally famous for it and in the other he thinks people are considered outcasts for living that way. He also seems to be conflating financial independence/freedom with happiness in a way that makes it seem like that's the only way to be happy.. that's not the case for most of us. Most of us just want to see positive fruits for our labor. There is so much to do an experience out there and I'm sorry to say this but, very little of it is free. That's just the world we live in. If our dollar could stretch further, we would concentrate more time on doing things that make us happier rather than just trying to cover the basic needs.
Gee i'll sure miss his neoliberal establishment left songs of angst about how orange man bad and you need to get the jab. Just a middle aged limousine liberal with blue hair and high cholesterol.
He’s definitely not delusional. Definitely not for sure. He’s totally sane. I mean not having a normal life for over 25 to 30 years. Definitely does not make you out of touch with reality not even ia little bit. I’m totally sure he’ll be fine t
Honestly, I'm not "Old School" or claim to be any type of Punk Fan. I love a lot of Music, punk, heavy metal, & classic rock. 41yrs old. I know of Fat Mike & this band breaking up, & blah, blah, I can't name ONE song by them. I know bands that are dead & gone. Mike has caught a mental cancer, and he wants to share it with the world. Does he look like a happy guy to you? Does it look like his political outlook is making him "joyful"? His demeanor is very clear. Whatever he's got; you don't want it.
He seems not sober, short of breath, definitely not in the best of health. What I mean is that he sounds like he needs to burp, the entire time he is talking. Probably bugs me because that is what it’s like talking to my mom

NOFX has been my favorite band since I first heard White Trash in 1993-94. I was just starting high school, hanging out with some friends and my friend Aric and he gave me a mohawk while we listened to the album. NOFX was my escape (well drugs too lol) from my stepdad who I'd have to take beatings from so he wouldn't beat up my mom and younger siblings. Escape from being poor and never having anything cause your stepdad was also a crackhead and violent drunk. Who'd make me and my younger brother run and grab him drugs when we were as young as 10 and 11. And so many other shitty things. But NOFX helped me through a lot of it. I honestly think I'd be dead today without all the great music I discovered as a kid.
Mike is a true setter and leader. Rare breed for sure. Thanks Fat Mike! Your music shaped my youth and my kids.. thanks for all the shoes!! Love you and hope you find what you are looking for!
The partying days add up too brother. I’ve done my fair share of drugs in my life and I’m 37. I work a 5:30-1:30 job. I can only imagine the punk scene back in the day being some crazy ass parties. Life takes its toll and then you realize when it’s time to throw in the flag. Thank you for all your great and memorable music (Linoleum and Stickin In My Eye oh and Pump Up The Valium album fire just a few to name top fav)
If he wanted to make people happy, he would start writing good music again, let Ryan Greene produce the next albums, and let Hefe have more say in the writing process like in "the longest line", "White Trash", etc. Not that hard. Ted Talks?
It hurts me to know that mike doesnt believe NOFX is bringing enougj happiness to the world, yet this new wave rap punk hybrid stuff is, but st the same time each individual memeber of nofx has brought me so much joy and relatability over the years. If you wanna chase what makes YOU happy mike then do it, bit dont label it as "for the people" just do you man.
I agree with some of what Mike said, particularly determining what your own version of success looks like. We, as Americans, have way too much of a tendency to gauge success only in financial terms. Different people have different ambitions; you cannot put a price on completing a marathon, writing a song, etc. However, avoiding hard work and aiming for a life where you just lounge around all day is a sure fire way to be unhappy. I would rather set goals, set plans in place to accomplish them, own my failures and continue to improve. I’ll take long-term fulfillment over short-term happiness any day of the week. This is part of the reason I stopped listening to NOFX. It seems to me like their message was pretty much do drugs, have fun, and live for yourself because at the end of the day none of this really matters anyway. Great advice for the youth, Mike! Those will for sure be some Ted talks I’ll be sure to skip.
The f@ck, “we as Americans”? Every modern society factors in financial worth as being successful. I don’t care how “successful” you try to say you are, but if you’re stuck working 2 jobs struggling to provide for you family, you aren’t successful. You are spending more time away and providing the least. Success is spending time and providing. That’s what financial success gives you. Don’t be dense about it.
Yeah. I'm an American now permanently living in Europe/Spain. People here are generally happier and more laid back here (for a plethora of reason), but Mike's example was dead-on.
I started following Nofx and other more or less known bands from the same melodic hc punk style (fan since 1994)…they made a great impact on the music me and my band(s) were playing at the time…I’ve seen them live at least 20 times and always enjoyed their shows

I really admire this guy and what he says. Reminds me of a good friend who passed away. Stay up Mike

I agree. I drove from Michigan to the Orlando show!!! Wouldnt have missed it for the world! Great show!

It's a good rule

Mike makes SO MUCH SENSE!!!! He'd be a great stand up comic, or be a really good ted talk guest.
Money doesn’t buy you happiness. However for the small cost of 1,915.00 you can get the “bro” package and see nofx in Australia.

Nofx has been the only sure thing to make me happy; whenever, wherever, no matter what since 1991 (when I was 12 years old)
Nofx was a big part of my life cannot wait to see in June.
It's sad, but it's all good. Life changes, people need to switch things up and do new things. And also sometimes great things can get old later in life. Nothing lasts forever. But that's part of what makes it all so great. Every song has an ending. And then you start again new.
nahhhh....NOFX doesnt just give me joy for one night.... gives me joy everyday, a part of my life.

So sad to hear. Been listening to NOFX for 29 years and also had a snowboard part back in the days with one of their songs as the sound track.
The drugs and alcohol have caught up 🤷♂️
He’s definitely not delusional.

I have NO idea why this guy & his bumper sticker on a car logo band are famous.
I was at that show in Austin... It was fucking awesome
I love the way rich people say that having money is not the key to happiness. It is true to a degree but without money you can’t always follow your passions. Don’t get me wrong I like Fat Mike and NOFX but unfortunately life isn’t that simple.

Electronic punk??
Nooo!!!! Nofx can't break up! Nooo this can't be happening!

Thanks Mike, your nofx music has helped me to be happy.
If he wanted to make people happy, he would start writing good music again, let Ryan Greene produce the next albums, and let Hefe have more say in the writing process like in "the longest line", "White Trash", etc.
Not that hard.

(real reason, fat mike's too sober for nofx these days)
can someone send me lirycs to Wasted Life Ain't No Crime i am not native english and cant find it online

Good comment. I agree
Yeah. I'm an American now permanently living in Europe/Spain. People here are generally happier and more laid back here (for a plethora of reason), but Mike's example was dead-on.
he also said he doesn't enjoy doing live shows anymore unless he's wasted, and that he doesn't want to do that anymore
That’s not how life works in Europe lol
I started following Nofx and other more or less known bands from the same melodic hc punk style (fan since 1994)…they made a great impact on the music me and my band(s) were playing at the time…I’ve seen them live at least 20 times and always enjoyed their shows
