- Hi Guys
As you know a few years ago Wifey got me a Gramophone as a gift for my Ramble Room and a subscriber asked me ages ago if I would do a video on the Gramophone.
So, while I'm at home I thought I'd finally do that video!
Keep Safe Guys!

The music in this video is not mine
There are some videos on UA-cam (I've just put together a playlist) which shows these machines being assembled and they are actually packed/shipped with an Indian record actually on the turntable, which I think explains where your record came from. I have the same Sound Master base unit as you do (bought at a carboot, no horn), and as far as I can tell is 100% modern, even the motor. Some of these machines do have motors from old portable gramophones. I have a replica like that too. Thanks 😀 👍
Lol, youre here too👌👍
Great video, i am told that to reduce the volume, you could roll up a sock and stuff it down the horn, hence the saying " put a sock in it"
I did not know that, it makes sense I guess, Cheers Pal
Lovely piece of hardware! Thanks for showing this. Be well!
That looks lovely to look at and display. A very classy and smart Gramophone
Cheers pal
It's Replica..
A lovely little treasure youve got there stripey! I hope you can find more information on it and i wish you all the best in these times of uncertainty.
Ha ... that is brilliant Stripey and really made me chuckle , just what is needed in these worrying times . Stay safe mate .
Hey Strype great little piece of old skool.Really enjoyed that.
Take care mate strange times indeed.
Have a good one be safe .
It's a replica, they have old motors in them though.
Cheers Greg, it's for display but nice to have a little info! I just subbed to your channel...interesting! cheers Pal
@@StripeyR Cheers mate
I have one just like it as i bought it for my late partner as an addition to his other one in a cabinet. The needles need changing after every play, however I was able to find an antique needle sharpener as the needles blunt easily due to the weight on the Bakelite. You can get different tones of needles too, soft tone etc. They are nice to look at but the sound is deafening, I actually stuffed some material down the horn to quieten the noise. Thanks for the video, nice to see people still appreciating days gone by!
I got my Gramophone Sound Master at a yard sale... I got to also have the record that was already on it when they sold it to me. They were selling others. These records are smaller the the ones I'm used to from the modern record players of the 80s & 90s and they are heavier, roughly double the weight.
Looks so cool!
Thanks Jonathan, I think so too!
This video is a tonic Stripey ! 🙋 Take care mate , hope we all get through to the other side of this 👍
Thanks David, Glad you enjoyed it mate! If we all take care we'll be fine pal.
Nice video, I have also a replica and after some adjustments (specially the position of the needle on the record), I get a better sound quality. If you change the needle every record side you won’t damage the records.
5:35 😂😂that look was priceless
Cheers Adam
It's great for display
Great uplifting video. These were made in India. They use bits from any gramophones they can get their hands on. That does have a nice mahogany case which is rare. The soundbox is not original either and will damage 78’s if used a lot. Yours is a nice looking machine. India had windup gramophones until the 70’s and produced shellac records until 1965. So you find Beatles etc only on Indian 78’s. Thanks for another great video please keep you and the family safe through this very weird time.
Interesting Andrew, that explains the record being Bengali. I just searched The Beatles on 78 ...£1.5000 & up! Wow! My Gramophone is just an ornamental piece mate. thanks for the info pal
@@StripeyR My Pleasure Yep Beatles 78's are a fortune i have A Hard Day's Night on Indian 78 they were amazing pressings believe it or not and some did sound better than the vinyl 45
I just got the Gramophone Sound Master, but slight differences... the color of the wood is lighter, there is a pattern engraved into the wood at the front and I don't have to remove the crank to open it... it has it cut out so the crank can go out still attached. Other than those few things, it's basically the same thing.
Hi Stripey. The Gramophone looks great! There is a channel on them. Just came across it by u-tube recommendation some time ago. Glad to see you and your family are well. We are taking each day as it comes. My wife is a nurse working in a hospital in the Detroit metro area (America). They have had a couple of cases. She is fine now. I pray that she stays healthy. Thank you for the video. Always enjoyable and informative. Best regards, Brian.
Thanks Brian, it looks great, so so on the sound. Your wife and all the nurses around the world do an amazing job, they truly do. Take care pal.
O now this is nice !!!! I do like this a lot . I have distance my self … From my wife lol … Dos that count mat !!!! Ok you cant fool me is that Yoko Ono right lol !!!!! Beatle Brad hello beatlebrad
Another great vid Stripey lifting spirits in tough times, a few more rambles might be what we all need👌. Was wondering what your thoughts on Led Zeppelin were not sure if they are your cup of tea but recently started listening to some of there albums and although I’ve been aware of them for years until now have never really heard most of their stuff but now I’m hooked, keep safe mate.
Cheers Skiddy, a bit like yourself mate I've heard of Led Zeppelin no a lot of their big songs but never really delved into their albums. On my things to listen too list mate. Cheers pal
Great, you won’t be disappointed. Look forward to a led Zeppelin first play in the future then maybe 👍🏻
Alright Stripes,I can see why that record was hidden away mate! I have a few 78 Ray Charles records and there is something time travelly about them! Thanks for the ramble Stripes. Very strange times as you say but christ doesnt it make you appreciate all we take for granted Stripes eh? Take care
Hey Days, It does indeed make you appreciate the simple stuff mate. take care of you & your pal
Hi striphy , you have good knowledge of gramophone, My dad made whole piece hand made. We sold it.
Hey have you ever listened to The Cats? It’s my favorite band from the 60s/70s. You should check their 5 number 1 hits out or some albums to see if you like ‘em :)
Hi' i have the same one at first i thought the same but realised you need gramophone vinyls and a short needle.
I did this and it sounded amazing.
Nice for a "novelty " , but not for true "hi fidelity "! I know....duh George!
Also, Theres an option how to reduce the volume, *stick a sock in it*
It was so nice of your wife to buy this for you, with all great intentions and love, but like all the other people said: DO NOT USE THIS TO PLAY ANYTHING. When you do get a proper gramophone, CHANGE THE NEEDLE AFTER EVERY PLAY. The steel needles do not maintain their point after even 3 minutes on use on the turntable.
On a brighter side, I was able to sleuth out the record you have there. The performer, K. C. Dey, was a famous, blind Bengali singer who recorded for several decades until his voice and health deteriorated. He died in 1962 at age 69. The record you have, HMV P. 11750, contains songs recorded in July 1932. Both sides contain devotional songs known as "Bhajans."
It's a modern reproduction. It shouldn't be allowed anywhere near records. If you want to listen to 78s find a suitcase style gramophone from the 20s or 30s, they're cheap and sound really good. The way the soundbox on that one leans over is cutting out the sides of the grooves and with the badly designed horn it makes the record sound awful.
Hi mate,
A very nice gramophone.
Was that a Yoko album, you first put on?
Take care, mate and keep it sound and safe.
Haha, Beatle Brad said the same Pe Ke, it could be Yoko lol! cheers pal
still cant figure out if sound master gramophones are really legit old ones or just a company making replica's
Unfortunatly, this is a replika, made in recent past in india. If you want to keep it, change the needles for hmv, or other good Brands.
Ah cool ive always wanted an old time gramaphone. Just to look at,the record shop i go to has one of those, not that exact model.
But that record sounds really warped and the player sounds quite fast.
Oh by the way did you check out rush. If so what did you think, i fear i threw you in the deep end. But it is my favourite song of theirs.
Stay safe mate, the internet will be a lot more dull without you.
Cheers Interwebs mate, It is a nice bit of furniture indeed. I had a listen to Rush I think they need more attention from yours truly, my oldest Brother & my pal Keith are big fans. take care pal.
@@StripeyR ah great yeah rush are a great band worthy of your time for certain.
I would recomend fly by nigh, 2112, hemesphires, fairwell to kings and moving pictures as the basic catalougue. They've been going for years first album came out 1974 and they stoped in 2015, though they formed in 1968.
I'm sorry to say this but...
*This is a Replica, Made in 21st century, in India, with a Cheap, Crappy Garrard Motor taken out From later Portable, Needles don't track Properly, And even destroy Grooves of the records, Real gramophones never had Brass Horn, Only From Steel, Or Metal, And i forgot to say, Those Fakes don't even have Pressure to track the 78's Properly. And also the Tonearm is So Flimsy it sometimes even skips, Please Friend, don't get Fooled And don't buy this, if u don't want your 78's be damaged*
Interesting video though chap
Hello, thanks for the video. Maybe you have information about the company of this gramophone? If so, please share.
This is a cheap, modern replika. Believe me, the original machines sounded ten times better.
Please turn the needle abit to the other side, it should drag along the groove, not plow into it.
Not sure why you'd want to store records inside that chassis under the motor due to how inconvenient it is, the incorrect orientation of the records, and the risk of the motor smashing them. That is a replica by the way and the build quality/playback is not the best but I will admit it does look nice. The needle is also supposed to be at an angle rather than straight down but I will at least give credit for putting it on the right side since so many people get that part wrong for some reason. You'd think people would've seen enough modern turntables and even footage of gramophones to know it goes on the right.
Cheers Sam, I use it as an ornament I don't actually use it.
Glad your doing okay stripey. That sounded awful. Maybe that was a 78 of a witch lol
It is a replica I can tell by the tone arm
hiw expensive is an original one?
this gramophone are look old they not just new gramophone
That’s a Bengali song
I hear you can buy the reproducer part on eBay that’s so much better than the one that comes with these replicas, I don’t have one yet still searching for a nice one, that’s cheap...but works nicely... have you tried buying a new reproducer?I hear certain ones can really improve the sound I don’t know if the motor is replaceable
Go-to car boot sale pick up some 78s.
I bought a genuine HMV102 for 70 quid and it needed repairing but it does sound great.
This is the one I fixed up but at the time I played this record the speed of the deck was running about 90 rpm as I needed some leather to repair the regulator

Hi Stripey, I've just acquired one of these gramophones (from wee antigue shop/cafe in Hornsey). Its very similar to yours excepting the base in cylindrical. Bit of a shame to hear from one of the comments that its possibly a replica made a few years ago in India !!!
Lovely little design piece that I'm sure will be a conversation piece in the flat. It'll go well with my 1907 ships piano.
PS. I work in a North London hospital and it pains me to hear people saying this virus is a hoax and isn't any worse than a common flu strain. They need to look at the worldwide impact this pathogen has had, particularly on the poorer communities of Central and South America. I am concerned people are blase about this and my hospital will be overrun again in Autumn/Winter
Is fake
Unfortunately it's a replica.
This gramaphone there are thousands of theses fake ones you can tell its fake
That machine is a replica....very poor Quality. Don't play anything on this if you love your records....
It’s a crapophone, a cheap Indian reproduction made in the last ten years.
Yes.
It's a fake gramophone.
Made in China.
Sadly you have bought what is known as a crap-o-phone. Its is an Indian rip off that will rapidly destroy any records played...and sound nothing like a real gramophone.
