I wanted to have a business making children's clothes, but it would mean taking time away from my children. I started to remember this song, "The Cat's in the Cradle" I changed my mind, and learned to appreciate and have memories of my time with my children while they were still young. Children's nursery rhymes - little boy blue come blow your horn . . . Cats in the cradle . . . The cow jumped over the moon and the dish ran away with the spoon . . .
What makes it so sad, is that the son isn't angry or resentful, he loves his Dad, but ends up just like him, no time to spare, which the Dad now has to process and understand. From all I've heard you say, you sound like an awesome Dad, but it never hurts to be reminded to remember what's important, life gets hectic. ✌❤

My daughter is a child psychologist. She worked with mostly autistic children throughout her college years. She learned so much about the type of treatment and disagreed with a lot of it. She changed the way they did things and parents absolutely loved her as they said their kids progressed much faster with her. She now treats all different types of mental disorders but many of the children that she sees has autism.

"Cat's Cradle" (Ancient Time-Passing Game) ... Cat’s cradle is one of the oldest games in recorded human history, and involves creating various string figures with the hands -- either individually, or by passing a loop of string back and forth between two or more players. The true origin of the name is debated, though the first known reference is in The Light of Nature Pursued by Abraham Tucker in 1768. The type of string, the specific figures, their order, and the names of the figures vary. Independent versions of this game have been found in indigenous cultures throughout the world, including in Africa, Eastern Asia, the Pacific Islands, Australia, the Americas, and the Arctic. - - - - - - - - - - "Little Boy Blue" (Nursery Rhyme) ... Little Boy Blue come blow your horn! The sheep’s in the meadow! The cow’s in the corn! Where’s the little boy who looks after the sheep?! He’s under a haystack fast asleep! Will you wake him? No! Not I! If I do, he'll surely cry! - - - - - - - - - - "Man in the Moon" (Nursery Rhyme (one version) ... The man in the moon, Came tumbling down, And asked his way to Norwich. He went by the south, And burned his mouth, While supping cold plum porridge! - - - - - - - - - - In connection with this song, these are all pictures of things that could drastically happen, if one waits too long to do the things that SHOULD be done, that DIDN'T get done, while one was just messing around with someone/something, somewhere. In other words: "Don't spend all your time doing whatever it is that simply TAKES/STEALS your time, when you COULD be spending more time doing much more important stuff...things that are necessities, or that show forth your love for another, etc. - - - - - - - - - - The "songfacts" site tells the actual story of the song's origin (which was, indeed, initially written as a poem, by his wife, Sandy), under this section ... facts/harry-chapin/cats-in-the-cradle - - - - - - - - - - Harry's last name should be pronounced "Chay' - pin."
This song touches my heart. My son listened to it when he was very young. It made him cry. He made sure this was *not* going to happen to his family when he grew up. My son served nearly 30 years in the military. When he was home, he made sure that they did everything as a family. This song's message is... the most valuable gift you can give your family is... your time. Make fabulous memories for each other as often as you can. Because when the day comes when one of you is no longer there, you will have no regrets. But, you will have many beautiful memories. Take care. -Dee
This song is one that all parents need to listen to and pass along to their own children. All five of my children have been taught the lesson in this one. Now im teaching it to my twelve grandchildren. Ugly Kid Joe did a great cover of this song. Worth checking out 👍👍
I'm a counselor, and us professionals know this: when adults have a bad day, they come home and tell their significant other, "I've had a rough day, I'm tired, and just want some down time." When children experience a bad day, they tell their parents, " could you play with me?" Says a lot about out current family unit. Enjoying your channel.
Yes, those are stories we read to the kids. My advice to any parent is SPEND TIME WITH YOUR KIDS!!!!!! I have always put my kids 1st. My husband is a great provider but he works all of the time. My son is almost 28. Time goes by so fast!!!!!!
As a young man I listened to Heart and Led Zeppelin constantly. To see this amazing tribute many years later, just reinforces the quality of these two groups. Very powerful.
I'll never forget the day 25 years ago and my son was a little fellow. He asked me to kick the soccer ball with him and I said no, I'm busy. Well fast forward til today and we hardly speak. He's in Florida and I'm in Tennessee. This song honestly makes this old navy vet cry
Grew up in the 60-70's on a farm, so mom and dad always there for us kids. Harry Chapin's song is a morality lesson put to music that touched a generation.....you know what he's singing about is true, but???? Don't be saddened by the song, if you think about its message it is positive beyond a catchy tune. Luv his song Taxi as well.
When you said...Time is a theif... at the end of the video, it reminded me of a Rod Stewart song called.... Young Turks.... from 1981, it was a big hit for Stewart and is another song with a great story about love between a young couple, I think you might enjoy reviewing it on your channel. This one was a really good reaction to Cat's in the Cradle, such a powerful song .
I played this at my Dad's tribute...I was told NOT TO but I felt that whereas the 'Dad' in the song never had time for his son. My Dad had a home 'office' of sorts (Mom used it too as needed). He only used it to sort out his sales slips once each week. I would often slip into his office and put a glove with a baseball in it ("...can you teach me to throw...") and then quickly leave. He figured out that he could play catch with me for 15-20 mins and his sales slips could wait!
Kudos to you for pushing yourself and spending time with your son. This song always tears me up, knowing the story behind this. Thanks for all the reactions, and know that they are very much appreciated!
Our children will remember the times spent with their fathers/mothers as the most important, not the things pushed at them. Spend time, make time, take time to be with your children, it's important.
My sister in law had a day care so I was lucky that she watched my 3 boys. Their dad always got home late so up to me to pick them up from work, start cooking dinner etc. Just hectic. My sister in law reminded me...just remember they haven't seen you all day. That helped to remind me just to spend a little down time when we first got home. My baby is now 30! Time goes way too fast.
This just crushed me, it is an old favorite but just last week my father whom I haven't seen since I was three passed away at the age of 83. We were reintroduced by my half-sister who found me last year. I was able to talk to him a few times on the phone but due to my own health issues, I was unable to travel several states away to see him.
So sorry for your loss and thanks for sharing! This song is definitely an emotional one and a reminder to live each day to the fullest with the ones we love! Hang in there and appreciate you swinging by! 🙏🏻
@Seton Hill Studios Always keep in mind... Nobody's tombstone says, "I wish I'd have worked more." Priorities. Your babies are only little for such a short time; enjoy every, single minute you can spare! It's time you can never get back. They won't remember birthday gifts. They WILL remember time spent with their Dad. 😉❤ 3 great songs in a similar vein to this one (haven't checked playlists, so I apologize if you've already done these!): *Then They Do* (Trace Adkins) *My List* (Toby Keith) *Don't Blink* (Kenny Chesney)

Please listen to and react to more of Harry's music. I was lucky enough to see him twice in concert when I was college. His songs are always touching and heartfelt and touch on so many meaningful topics. Being in his audience was like sitting in a living room with a friend playing guitar and telling stories. The world lost a real talent and a good man when he passed. Thank you so much for this review.
Steven, as you continue down the singer songwriter rabbit hole of the early 70's you'll find it really has the best lyrics of any of the modern era music. Some people find it kinda sappy, but the songs really tell stories of life with real meaning to them and they are so accessible to everyone who wants to listen. This definitely is a tear jerker and it is so introspective.
I am slowly finding that out and I am loving the journey with all of you all! Even though it is through a screen I do find it satisfying to share each experience with you all! Thanks for being a part of my journey and have a great day! 😁
It’s hard! I spent much of my career having to fly overseas 4-5 times a year. I’d get off a 12 hour flight into Sydney and head straight to one of my kids birthday parties.. we made it work and we have an incredible relationship and today we’re all very close. Of course I did it all for them and they understand that especially now as I’m a single mother ❤

Cat's in the Cradle is a literal reference that the cat is in the cradle and also a reference to the child's string game cat's cradle as far as I know. Back in the day a common baby shower gift was a silver baby's first Spoon and Fork set. Little boy blue was a theme people decorated their little baby sons bedrooms with. It was kind of like the boy version of Holly hobbie. It's based off of a classic portrait set of a young brother and sister. One portrait is of little boy blue and the other is of his sister Pinky. It was a thing in the seventies. The man on the moon is of course just a general reference to Children's Story books, many based on the man on the moon. And it's pronounced "Chay-pin"
When I was younger, I thought I loved certain people in my life - but I always assumed they'd be around forever and so I was not fully present, fully aware, fully appreciative. It was only after my mother died that I realized the voice I had often ignored was the one I would pay everything to hear again. Now, as an old man, I listen. I remind myself that every conversation with a loved one might be the last conversation and that there will come a time when I may want to hear that person's voice and won't be able to... or there may come a time when what I say may be the last words that person can hear from me.
Cat's cradle is an ancient game between people passing a loop of twine, in shapes, back and forth. Little Boy Blue is one of the rhymes of Mother Goose and were first published in England over 400 years ago, but some go back as verbal traditions even further. Every English speaking child should know them, along with the fairy tale stories which are often published in big, illustrated volumes for kids. These include rhymes and stories like Ring Around the Rosy, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Baa Baa Black Sheep, The Three Little Pigs, Goldylocks and the Three Bears, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Jack and the Beanstalk, and The Boy Who Cried Wolf. It's not unusual to find story collections that include Aesop's Fables, that go back to ancient Greece. The Fox and the Grapes, Androclese and the Lion, The Tortoise and the Hare. We have a rich variety of children's rhymes and stories, some of which, like Chicken Little, and The Little Red Hen, are always relevant. In Chicken Little the fox watches as the barnyard animals fall one by one into mindless, unfounded panic because they believe the sky is falling. The Fox generously offers them shelter in his den. The animals gladly run down into it and are never seen again. If you don't know these stories and characters, so many modern satirical works from Fractured Fairytales to Shrek are going to leave you baffled when the rest of the audience is rolling in the aisles. Have you seen The Muffin Man?🧓🎭💖
I really enjoyed your open honest reaction, letting us in a little. I saw Harry twice live in London back in the 70’s, he was truly amazing and really knew how to connect with his audience. We were all putty in his hands. I’d love to see you react to Mr Tanner (album version), a song about one man’s dreams, and how they can come crashing down. Another classic Harry tune is the incredible Sniper. The lyrics are out of this world.
The song and poem references fairytales, children’s rhymes, and games. Most of them come from the Mother Goose children’s rhymes and stories but they have been widely referenced in other works. Harry did half his concerts for charity each year. Try listening to A Better Place to Be, Mr Tanner, Corey’s Coming, Roses Are Red. Then depending on the age of your boys grab his brother Tom Chapin’s album of fun kids songs with the Missing Parade on it.
This song was redone by a hard rock group called Ugly Kid Joe in 1992,which is when I first heard it. There's a Christian group called Casting Crowns that has a song called American Dream that's similar in theme to this song that you might like. It's about a man who's so wrapped up in trying to provide a good life for his family that he alienates them and ends up learning what's important in life the hard way.

She now treats all different types of mental disorders but many of the children that she sees has autism.
@@TNgirl546 Great to hear that she found what works for the children she served! 😄
That is a great career choice. My two sons are autistic and they are great.
Of course they are! I am so thankful to be able to do what I do for a living! I learn so much daily! Have a great day! 😁
If you ever want to go through a rollar coaster of emotions... harry chapins gold medal collection. Every song strums a different emotion and has its own life lessons
I read this poem in highschool and i realised it became a song lyric and i understood it immediately because my father abandoned me when I was born so i could relate to it
So sorry to hear that! 🙏🏻
A big slap of reality in the face! Spend quality time now because tomorrow is NOT promised to us. Take care.
💯
I grew up with his stories. Saw him three times in concert. Amazing man. He started the modern form of benefit concerts. Half of his concerts were for charity. At his concerts, there were donation boxes for people to drop off canned food. He was the best story songwriter. Try his songs:
Taxi
Mr. Tanner
The Rock
Sniper (studio version)
W.O.L.D.
You have never heard a song like Sniper. Ever. It will shock you.

"Little Boy Blue" (Nursery Rhyme) ...
Little Boy Blue come blow your horn!
The sheep’s in the meadow! The cow’s in the corn!
Where’s the little boy who looks after the sheep?!
He’s under a haystack fast asleep!
Will you wake him? No! Not I!
If I do, he'll surely cry!

"Man in the Moon" (Nursery Rhyme (one version) ...
The man in the moon,
Came tumbling down,
And asked his way to Norwich.
He went by the south,
And burned his mouth,
While supping cold plum porridge!

In connection with this song, these are all pictures of things that could drastically happen, if one waits too long to do the things that SHOULD be done, that DIDN'T get done, while one was just messing around with someone/something, somewhere.
In other words: "Don't spend all your time doing whatever it is that simply TAKES/STEALS your time, when you COULD be spending more time doing much more important stuff...things that are necessities, or that show forth your love for another, etc.

The "songfacts" site tells the actual story of the song's origin (which was, indeed, initially written as a poem, by his wife, Sandy), under this section ...

Harry's last name should be pronounced "Chay' - pin."
Take care. -Dee
Thanks so much for sharing! ❤️
This song is one that all parents need to listen to and pass along to their own children. All five of my children have been taught the lesson in this one. Now im teaching it to my twelve grandchildren. Ugly Kid Joe did a great cover of this song. Worth checking out 👍👍
Great reaction - I feel like the emotion of this song hit you at 2:56 into this vid - tomorrow is never guaranteed so do it today :)
Wow! Thanks for the insight and something to think about for sure! Have a great day! 😁
Shewee! It definitely gets you in your feels but we can’t change the past! Thank you for your service and have a great day!
Harry wrote a lot of great story songs. Dig deep and enjoy. You won't be disappointed.
His other most well known are Taxi, and W.O.L.D.
Everybody recommends "Taxi" and "Sequel," and they're great storytelling. For me though, Harry was at the top of his game with "A Better Place to Be."
I can't imagine there are many people, especially parents of minor children, who are unmoved by this song.
A great singer and songwriter, RIP Harry
So great that you had an awesome dad that went that extra mile! Thanks for sharing and have a great day! 🙏🏻❤️
Kudos to you for pushing yourself and spending time with your son. This song always tears me up, knowing the story behind this. Thanks for all the reactions, and know that they are very much appreciated!
Really means alot to me! Thanks so much for watching!
It is a song that pulls at ur. Heartstrings life is too short my husband passed away at 47 the 25 years we had was just too short ❤
So sorry for your loss! ❤️
Our children will remember the times spent with their fathers/mothers as the most important, not the things pushed at them. Spend time, make time, take time to be with your children, it's important.
One of my favorite songs. I cry almost every time I hear it. It makes me think of the times that I wasn't there for my children. Powerful songs.
We can only move forward and change today! Have a blessed one! ❤️
I'm right there with you, brother. I only clicked on bc it was Steven. Otherwise, I stay away from this song.
We all have our time - we need to do the best we can and enjoy what we have for as long as we can.
Have a listen to Harry Chapin’s song “A Better Place To Be” & “The Shortest Story” they are both really sad 😢
For Crying Out Loud is one of my favorites from the Bat Out Of Hell album. The lyrics are deep.
"...so close to home." Oh.. YEAH! Eye faucets on!
This one hits home. ALOT. Ty brother! Needed this today ☘️🇺🇲
Let’s gooooo!
@Seton Hill Studios
Always keep in mind...
Nobody's tombstone says,
"I wish I'd have worked more."
Priorities. Your babies are only little for such a short time; enjoy every, single minute you can spare! It's time you can never get back. They won't remember birthday gifts. They WILL remember time spent with their Dad. 😉❤
3 great songs in a similar vein to this one (haven't checked playlists, so I apologize if you've already done these!):
*Then They Do* (Trace Adkins)
*My List* (Toby Keith)
*Don't Blink* (Kenny Chesney)
In in the early 90s Ugly Kid Joe covered this song and in my opinion they did it justice . Check it out on your own sometime I think you would like it.
I always bet myself when I watch any reaction to this song that I wouldn’t tear up. I always lose.🥺
Don’t let it make you feel down honey! USE it in your life as a lesson with your dear sons AND wife! ♥️
Thank you! ❤️
Cat's in the Cradle, Man in the Moon are children's nursery rhymes.
This is so beautifully sad song. It is very deep. I cry every time I hear it. I love your reaction! 😢
For sure! So glad you enjoyed it! Definitely a deep one!
One of those songs we teens played often and loud when upset with the parents. Another was Henson Cargill and Skip-a-Rope.
Some of my favorites of his are Mr Tanner, A Better Place to Be and What Made America Famous. Thanks again.
A classic Song that Hits all of us Fathers and Sons alike. So Sad we lost Harry at Age 38
So cool that you made all those sacrifices for your children and you have no regrets! Love to hear that! ❤️
The circle of life. Live in the moment.
❤️
This song always makes me cry. Kids grow up way too fast, grandkids grow up way too fast and now I have great-grandkids. Great-grandkids. I'm still working. And I'm still working and I don't have enough time. It is so frustrating.
DaerAileen, thanyousoooomuch for the Harry ChapinVideo!!Brings back so many memories Harry Chapin was my very first live concert when I was 9 years 0ld I even had the honor of meeting him after the show.Istillxhave his autographed ticket stubs and autographed poetry book.He even kissed me on my forehead and toldme too always beGood. Please review the song Mr Tanner. Harry Chaplin is a fantastic story teller through his songs. You should check out Taxi next.
More tear jerkers or reflection are "Never Grow Up" and Billy Dean "Let Them Be Little"
Wow Steven that is really great my girls grew up so fast and now they have kids
As a 65 year old father i will tell u that u never think you're doing the best for your children.
Shewee! Really appreciate the insight and thanks for sharing! Have a great day! ❤️
@@setonhillstudios You're welcome! Thanks!
It is pronounced ChAAAA-pin. Such a talent, gone too soon. Another fav by him is 'Taxi'.
Have you seen The Muffin Man?🧓🎭💖
Thanks so much for the insight! ❤️
The perfect song of life passing too soon🥺🎶♥️
Appreciate all the recommendations and the insight! This song hits hard and I can’t wait to hear more from him! 😀
The thing is he died young so very much mimicked his life.
I heard this song on the way home from Both my Grand daughters high school Graduation 2 yrs apart !
Couldn't stop crying. .
It's all so true. .
I hear ya!! It hits hard!! ❤️
Let's Gooooo! Such an emotional song 😢 Great reaction and Peace out ✌️ ☮️ 🙏
Appreciate it! 😁
Oh cool! I’ll have to check that out! Thanks so much! ❤️
