    Hi. Killing the shell tone of the drum is great if you want ONLY attack and thump. Like with a bass drum. The wonderful tone (and, yes, PING) is supposed to be there to let the shell make its tone in the room. Drum manufacturers work very hard to get that sound JUST right. What might sound better to your close mics will not sound better to the entire kit as an instrument. The room mics NEED the ping so that it sounds like a real drum set. You will also make a big improvement on a floor tom by tilting the drum even 1 inch off of parallel to the floor and putting cymbal felts under the legs. A brick or a few books under the drum stop the standing waves between the drum and the floor. I am a recording engineer and drummer of 52 years. The only drum that is usually completely dampened is the bass drum so that it can be isolated in mixing and treated like a separate instrument apart from the kit as a whole.

    No offense but you need to hear these bad boys out in front. Already been through this stuff. Head out to the dance floor and have a "Drummer" play your kit. You will be amazed!Wood is made to resonate man. Add two guitars, bass and keyboards (horns optional) and you are going to want the PING! Trust me... resonate homey, resonate and sustain!!!

    • @timharrison2076
      @timharrison2076 6 років тому +4

      This, all day long, totally agree. You will not even hear that "basketball ping" out front when the band are playing. The floor tom was fine in the first place. If anything, it needed less muffling and the batter head needed to be a little tighter.

    • @ChrisBrooker
      @ChrisBrooker 6 років тому +3

      Unless of course you don’t want it to resonate because it could potentially cause frequency clashes with other said instruments. Sometimes I want drums so dead they sound like drum machines, sometimes I want clangy open trashy drums that take up the full frequency spectrum. It’s all about what flavor you are going for!

    • @brownhooque
      @brownhooque 6 років тому +4

      Barry Cannova "Ping" isn't the same as resonance. This tom still had a decent resonance with that fabric in there. If you can get rid of that ping, it won't have to be mixed out. Which would result in talking some attack out the drum in the mix, which you'll need.

    • @brownhooque
      @brownhooque 6 років тому

      Rene Dominguez No arguments here. I actually prefer a 1 ply head for toms. I never use them cuz they just don't last. But they sound great, if you want a super natural sound. Resonance can be tamed.

    I needed to de-ping my floor tom today and remembered this video. I just taped a small piece of felt inside to break up the sound and it did the trick. I think square drums (16x16 etc) are particularly susceptible to this kinda like how square rooms have bad acoustic. (Maybe? I dunno.) Thanks for the vid!

    • @gabrielcruz3997
      @gabrielcruz3997 4 роки тому +3

      The ping is due to sound echoing and reverberating off the inside of the shell. The fabric absorbs the sound waves instead of them bouncing off the inside of the shell. This is why most people put pillows in Bass drums

    I don't understand why many of you don't understand the point of this video!!!!1 I'm reducing PING!!!!!! PING!!!!!!! PING!!!!! Not RING!!! The head type,... muffling and tuning have nothing to do with this video!!!!!! Why do you think I'm snapping my finger inside the drums?... Because I want to change the ring? The head type? Tune it low or high? Put cotton balls in the drum? Tape a wallet to it? Seriously... Not to mention at the end of this video I say I took it too far.. If you watch PART 2 you see I cut some of fabric out.. increasing the sustain..

    • @PackyLundholm
      @PackyLundholm 5 років тому +7

      There’s a remarkable amount of idiots on this thread who don’t understand the problem you’re trying to address in the first place. I’ve been getting bad ping in my 16”, and that’s even with hands fully muffling both heads. I suspected the shell’s inner resonance was the culprit - thanks for the tip!

    • @renedominguez9882
      @renedominguez9882 4 роки тому

      Except ping is also ring. When you affect one component you affect the other with muffling. Anyways this is what sound boards are for. And This stuff goes out the window in full set/band play because these nuances are not present.

    Wet sand the back of the drumhead.
    I've been doing that for years and it got rid of a lot of the ringing since you don't have sound bouncing off the smooth plastic head. In extreme I took off the hardware and sanded off the clear lacquer from the inside of my floor toms.

    Many ways to achieve dampening effects. His is just one way. No need to be critical. Resonant to batter head tension differences, types of heads, external dampening, etc.. The possibilities are endless. He's just going with what works for him and his particular drum.

    • @customdrumtracksonlinedrum4960
      @customdrumtracksonlinedrum4960  6 років тому

      This has nothing to do with dampening...or head types.. or tuning.... When I snap my fingers in the drum you can hear the ping sound in the drum...

    A bit overkill for my liking but awesome idea. Decided to put a strip of 1inch wide x 2 inch deep memory foam on the inside taped around in a circle. Really improved the sound of the drum but still kept some nice ring to it

    I think a big part would be tuning your resonant head either higher or slightly lower. I'm thinking higher as you'll get resonance, but also a much better tone from the reso head.

    • @customdrumtracksonlinedrum4960
      @customdrumtracksonlinedrum4960  6 років тому

      Nothing to do with the head type or tuning... You hear the ping inside the drum when I snap my fingers...That's what I'm hearing... Lots of people don't hear what I'm hearing, some people do... Every drum is different, they have different paint/sprays on the inside,... And different size surface area... I think it also can be that a typical mic placement on the edge of the drum doesn't pick up the ping as much as what I hear acoustically,... But when mixing and you add compression, it stands out louder... At this point I'm really nit picking.... Overall the original tone is fine,.. a bit out of tune, but fine This is just to get something cleaner and more pure sounding..... Also In this video I took it to far,.. it was dampened too much,... The second video,, Part 2 is where I am now....

    2 or 3 cottonballs, flattened thrown inside can do wonders for the sound engineer, takes a bit of the "ring" otherwise tune the bottom heads to same pitch as batter heads. it makes sense.. instead of moving in different pitch they move up and down together. Maybe just for the floor tom which has to be as low pitch as possible Imo. :)

  • @climbjay
    @climbjay 2 роки тому

    The pinging is from the head. Those evans heads while magical and I believe they are the best heads right now… they do have that plasticky sound on some of them.
    Probably want a thicker head on the floor Tom.
    Or maybe even thinner.
    Also, would possible help tub/round out the sound by recutting the top edge to a ball bat round over profile.
    Slingerlands sound so good for that reason.
    Edit* watching this further… the rezo head is way too tight. Way too high.
    Cotton balls inside the shell is the fix here. Add one at a time until it takes away that overtone.

      Yup...I think coated contributes.. Try pulling off the skin and snap your fingers inside it.. do you hear a ping?

      @ma61 8 років тому

      wow textured paint, well i hope it works. i have tried what you said taking the bottom head off and yes the ping sound is definitely there.I have tried micro fiber and acoustic foam but they both killed to much resonance for me.I sent emails to pearl and evans but neither one of them was very useful in this matter.Maybe try the clear G14. i ordered a coated G14 but wont be here for a couple more weeks.

    Just to further muddy the waters, air holes have no affect on the sound. You can prove this easily by plugging the hole by putting a finger over the airhole while playing. No difference. Some 60's Slingerland toms didn't even have air holes and sounded great.

    It's all subjective, but I think that you had a great sound on your toms at the start. By putting the cloth inside the floor tom you kind of diminished the sound into a size of a rack tom. What I really would change is the sound of the bass drum. Your floor tom sounded like the deepest drum in your kit. I don't quite get the idea of these over dampened snappy bass drums. The potential of a large drum shell is sort of ruined that way... But if you like the sound, then who am I telling you :) Thanks for the clip anyway

  • @acuralee
    @acuralee 5 років тому

    You need to try the Kickport for floor toms... they have bass drum kickports... and FX series (for snare and rack toms) it will get rid of that "ping" sound... I put Tung oil in my inner shells.. I've got a 16x16 as well... without throwing all that fabric in mine has ec2 heads with ec reso's... it's hard to catch on camera. But now all 5 of my toms feel like they sync up. But I've used The kickport fx's on my 4 rack toms and the floor tom head. You will need to cut a small hole in the head but I swear by this little guy. It's amazing and I dont even have my kit mic'd up... check other videos out and wear some good headphones. Either way I hope you find your solution.

    I could not hear the ping when you hit the tom, but could hear it a few times when you snapped your fingers in the tom. Most people do not know what to listen for, sounds like putting a firecracker in a drain pipe and you hear a high pitched ping sound with the pop. I have a bass drum that did that brand new out of the box. I was bummed and was told to place a towel in it and the ping did go away. I was not happy for a high end drum to make that sound, but loved the kit and deal I got, so I decided to keep it knowing I would keep a small rug in the bass drum anyway. I wish I knew why some drums ping and some don't. I am thinking maybe tightly woven plies or wood not being musical which lets the ping ring louder than the wood can resonate, causing the ping to be noticeable. By the way, your drums sound great, but a shame your floor tom pings which is harder to fix than a bass drum. Good Luck!

  • @danielreily2701
    @danielreily2701 6 років тому

    I agree with jordan , what is your problem with ping ? Let drums sing . Head and mike selection will refine your required sound . When a drum is tuned to it's sweet spot or as sometimes described as tuned to itself then your on the money . You pay for resonance then let the bloody thing resonate .

    • @hannes1734
      @hannes1734 5 років тому

      This was not about resonance. Once i had my floor tom tuned perfectly, but there was still that ping which didn't come from the heads but from inside the drum. This is a bigger issue when mic'd than you think. We didn't get that ping away completely, even with EQ and compressor and what not else.

  • @rossonphillips
    @rossonphillips 2 роки тому

    If you are muting it with fabric you aren't really getting the tone and defeating the tone from the wood. All drums are different and require certain heads or dampening. But covering the inside? I would check your bearing edges, and are they diecast hoops, I also found the little washers on the lugs made a difference and tuning bottom head in realation to the top head. Some drums just don't tune right that is the thing about them. Each one is different and not all sound great.

  • @HR2635
    @HR2635 6 років тому

    the problem is not the wood,...its your tuning.. the "ping" is from the bottom head... simple fix if you dont want to retune.. put a loop of gaffa tape (sticky bit on the outside) dead center on the bottom head..

    Aquarian Heads ROCK!
    You could try different ply heads from Aquarian and use the basic rule of thumb for tuning I always heard, which is to tune the floors opposite the racks.
    The racks are looser top head tighter bottom and floors are tighter top head looser bottom.
    I have a 14x14 rack tom which I can never get to sound great. The whole drum ratio thing is what could be creating the problem.
    Why can't mfgs. understand the drum deadens out if both depth and width are too close in size?
    Properly tuned quality heads on decent drums need little to no muting.
    They sound even more amazing in a church! LARGE OPEN SPACE CONSTRUCTED OF ALL WOOD! It's Heaven!
    Oh yeah, and not get too technical but, listening to the drums on recorded media will change EVERYTHING and not necessarily capture the true sound of the drum. I heard capturing the true sound of the drum on a recording is a mind numbing task to say the least.
    Just throwing it out there.

No gels ,no tape,no pro tools, nothing, only what seems to be 2 "room mics "good gear,tuning and in my opinion most important, awesome technique... In my opinion, mics have dictated the "evolution"of the drum sound. All personal opinion but give me the old lively drum sound any day over the modern controlled dead sound.

      It's a moon gel, a sticky rubbery thing that dampens the ring of a drum.

    Are you sure you need that much material inside? I mean, just a single evans pad thing inside a bassdrum shell is enough to get rid of it, and those things are pretty small.

    • @SirHiggalot
      @SirHiggalot 6 років тому +1

      To equalize the pressure inside the drum with the atmospheric pressure outside of the drum to account for temperature changes.

    PING? what PING? I hear no ping and I've been drumming for 50 years. That floor tom is now deader than dead sounding with zero tone. If that's what you're going for, knock yourself out. You might as well beat a cardboard box. You should have tried a coated G2 or an Evans EC head.

      That is a coated G2. See part 2 where I put some ping back in... I agree
      the end of the end of this video was too dead sounding. Took it too
      far..

      Think it sounds dead? I prefer the sound with a folded towel over mine. Noce thuddy sound with no plasticky twang. What would you recommend as far as getting this same type of sound from a bass drum, a pillow or two inside maybe? Ive been thinking of selling it and getting a bigger marching bass drum for lower pitch sound.

  • @HR2635

    well.. fun video...maybe consider this: put a small roll of duct tape on the bottom head (with the sticky side outwards) and stik it to the bottom head.. the closer you place it to the center of the drum the more it will shorten the tone. Simple, fast, works all the time... been using that for 30 years now in the studio. Or you can tune it so the tone does no ring forever, but thats sometimes a major task to get right. And on the record no one will know how you did it ;-)

    I hear no ring on that 16" tom. It's too muffled-sounding. Try a Remo clear Ambassador or the like.

    • @customdrumtracksonlinedrum4960

      PING... not ring.... It's the sound I hear when I snap my fingers in the drum.... If you can't hear that happening you don't get what I'm focused on... This is more for everyone posting rather than you.. haha but your at the top right now... It has nothing to do with tuning or skin type... Or ringing or muffling... It's the Pinging sound inside the drum that is there not matter what you change or tune... This video ended with it being too dead.. I agree.. the part 2 has less fabric, which opens up the drum more.... Also.. When you record drums... and add compression... Things like ping get louder... You don't get that from this video... That's why I'm focused on this..

    I get ur very intense about this "Ping." But something inside says that this shouldn't be this hard. You said the drums were custom made, right? Well, take them back and have the builder fix this problem.

    To me, it was good at the beggining (a little dead) and then you ended up to ruin it completely. In fact when I saw the THREE moongels I knew I was totally going to disagree. But hey, it's all about the situation and personal preference. Some time ago I started to embrace the natural resonance instead of trying to get rid of it

    • @underpressureman
      @underpressureman 6 років тому

      nope, I do the same as Seth, basically get the wrinles out, especially on the floors! Racks I might tune a tad higher after the wrinkles are out, depends what im playing and If Im playing. Also drums have a natural tone of where they want to be tuned, youll find that in time.

    • @underpressureman
      @underpressureman 6 років тому

      Also different situations call for different tuning depending on genre, and if its live or studio!

    *_Sad when drummers fail to understand the fundamentals of acoustics when tuning drums... Any DIY loudspeaker builder will tell you that a tube (as like a modern drum) is the worst shape you can possibly have in terms of acoustics, that's because of standing waves... Every cylindrical or tube shape has both a longitudinal and a lateral standing wave... Each of those standing waves has a tone or note, so if those standing waves are dissident no amount of fiddling about tuning heads will make them sound any better... For example, if a given drum is longer than the width you must decide which standing wave are you going to tune the skin too so as to reinforce that particular note... So why have manufacturers over the years made shallow drums, long drums and drums that are as wide as they are deep? ... The answer is TRENDS, no shit, trends have determined the shape of drums since 1910 when Ludwig introduced the first commercial drumset... Since then all manner of manufacturers has jumped on the bandwaggon from motorbike manufacturers like Yamaha, to amplifier builders like Peavey... Yet surprisingly none of them has actually taken any inspiration from the ORIGINAL DRUM MAKERS from India, Middle Eastern Arabia, China Japan and Africa... If you look at any of these cultures, they ALL went to extreme lengths to avoid the standing waves of the drum shell by using cigar shapes, tapered shapes, flared shapes, bell shapes, single end shapes and even barrel shapes... So why are modern drum makers not conscious of issues with vstanding waves in theier disigns? ...Innoance of acoustic science, what else could it be?_*

      Glenn Hughes hi there. Very intriguing. I’m inspired by your comment to research it a bit here. It may be acoustical ignorance, but perhaps size of drums is more formulated on sizes that can be manageable for placement in a “kit” set up. Would be difficult to have a 14” deep ride tom over bass drum. Just a thought. I appreciate your comment. Thx. D
