  • Hello everyone. Here is a video showing you 3 great tunings for a 16" Floor tom feat. my awesome Rogers Covington Floor Tom.
    To help support my UA-cam channel please stream the full step-by-step lesson at
    www.kennysharretts.com/ppv-on...
    In this video I discuss all kinds of tips for easily getting a great, rich sounding floor tom with plenty of tone, and attack as well as tips for adjusting the pitches of the 16" to pair well with a tuning on a 12" tom that is tuned exactly where I like it. For step by step lessons on the method I used to tune this floor tom w/ Tune Bot/ Drum Dial settings for each tuning you can stream the whole lesson at www.kennysharretts.com. Not only will you learn tons about tuning any drums (much less a 16" floor tom lol), but you will be helping my UA-cam channel grow. Which means I can keep doing drum tuning, and drum tech videos for you all. Thank you so much for watching. Please feel free to like, share, and subscribe or even better STREAM A LESSON AT www.kennysharretts.com

    He’s the guru. Best, most real-world useful tuning vids on the web. My pro tip for saving your fingers and getting a perfect +x tensioning- get yourself 2 Tama TDK10 keys and use the knurled top to get everything ‘finger’ tight. Perfect tools for even tensioning and they’re $5. Must have.

    I love your videos. You have really elevated my sound and what I have done for a living to another level. You are to drum tuning and drum education what Jim Chapin was to independence, jazz and be-bop. By the way I've played Rogers for over forty years. I turned down an endorsement from Pearl a long time ago because I would not give them up and I'm ecstatic to see them back. Roy Burns must be looking down with tremendous joy and a huge smile on his face. Roy was a great drummer, innovator and gentlemen. Thanks Kenny

    Most players end up tuning their resonant heads too low, and wonder why their toms aren't happening. The larger the drum, the higher the reso head needs to be tuned, vs. the batter. Great video! :)

    • @RockBoBsteRMusic

      I'd like to know if the reso/batter heads are the same? What I've always heard is it's best to use the same head, single ply and thin on both sides for the brightest tone, and then it just gets darker the thicker film and thicker ply head.
      But then nobody ever has single ply batter heads and the heads aren't matched.
      So is this perfect fourth tuning for 2 ply batter/1 ply reso or matched heads as well?
      I just got all g12s from Evans for my Tom's matched all around. I read that a 12-in Tom is best to start with so I'm trying to go through the drum very slowly from the bottom up and experimenting. Then try to find that same sound but lower and higher in the other 10 and 14.
      And you eere right in another video Kenny, the finest tweaks of the key on diecast hoops make a big difference.

    But what i dont understand: with the note of the heads (c, g or whatver) what frequences are meant: the frequences of the lugs (tune-bot) or the frequence of the head in general, maybe played in the centre ?

    • @KennySharretts

  • @johnreardon4944
    @johnreardon4944 2 роки тому +3

    This is EXACTLY how I tune my kit! My rack tom is a 13x9 instead of a 12x8 so it's nice and full for rock.
    One thing I discovered is that the fundamental pitch is the same pitch as the reso, albeit an octave lower. However the relationship between the batter and reso is only a "perfect" perfect fourth when using a two ply head on top. When I use two single ply coated Ambassadors, this does pan out symmetrically. Has anyone else noticed that? I just leave the resos at the pitch I want and then adjust the batters to get the fundamental pitch. Again, an octave lower than the reso pitch.

    • @EricT43
      @EricT43 2 роки тому +1

      Not sure what you mean about the single ply heads. Since you're tuning to specific pitches, the type of head you use shouldn't affect the pitches you get.

    • @johnreardon4944
      @johnreardon4944 2 роки тому +1

      @@EricT43 I'm referring the the overall fundamental pitch of the drum. If I want a fundamental pitch of B flat for my rack tom (at a Perfect Fourth interval) then the batter is G flat and the reso is B flat. It works with a two ply batter perfectly. With a single ply batter at the same tuning, the tom's fundamental pitch is off a bit. I forget the extent of it, but it's very noticeable.
      I'm just pointing out that this is my observation from experimenting. I just don't know why. So I'm asking if anyone else has noticed it themselves.

    • @KennySharretts
      @KennySharretts  2 роки тому +2

      Thickness of the heads, and multiple plys can affect the shape of the tone, hence your perception of the Pitch. With a Major 3rd (G flat to B flat) especially with a two ply head you will usually get closer to a B. With the Perfect 4th (F to B flat) you are correct. You get pretty much a B flat dead on. With single ply heads the drift from the desired pitch can happen. A lot has to do with how exact your interval is. Thank you so much for commenting, and watching John. As always you have great comments

    • @EricT43
      @EricT43 2 роки тому +1

      @@johnreardon4944 I see what you mean now, thanks for explaining. I suppose the relationship between top and bottom heads and the resulting fundamental is very complex. The 2-ply head will take more energy to vibrate at the same frequency as the single-ply, since it is heavier. I'm sure that has some effect on how the 2 heads interact. Interesting observation you made.

    • @johnreardon4944
      @johnreardon4944 2 роки тому +1

      @@EricT43 That's the answer I was trying to remember! I remember now Rick Beato mentioning that in one of his videos. Or was it Kenny? I forget. Haha!
      I'm switching drum kits this week at my venue. Going from a 1978 Pearl luan 13x9 to a Pearl Reference Pure 12x9. I wonder how the depth ratio affects the energy. Probably a little, but I'm sure not as much as the type of heads. It will be a fun experiment!

    Hey Kenny, I'm sure you've heard of them already but if not, it might be worth checking out the Gavin Harrison drum keys by Sonor. I’m not sure what flat spotting is BUT I do know that sometimes hoop systems like the star cast make finger tightening quite the challenge. In situations like this I use a pair of keys like the Evans/Tama/firefly keys with the knurled tip to brush vs turn up into “finger tight” position. I hope this helps. I don’t tune my drums; I tension them. Each shell has its own sweet spot, and different heads reach proper tension at different pitches so you can’t really aim for a specific pitch if you change head types. But the drums should sound “in tune” (if you will) with one another as long as you use the same head type for all of them and target the same tension.
    Snare drum I treat a little differently - I tension the batter head, and then I tune the snare side head to about a perfect 4th higher.

      But then said u tuned the snare. LOL No seriously I understand your thought process on tension vs tuning. Like when I put tension on a guitar string to achieve a note, but with 6 or 8 or 10 pts its more of a tensioning, vs a tuning. Thanks for watching.

      @@RustyKnorr in fairness it says how to tune a 16” floor Tom. I have a 20” with stupid bottom end which I would like to know if how I’ve tuned it is right because there might be different methods with a floor Tom that big. Now Is that okay with you or did I need to ask your permission you fucking plum!

      I think what Rusty is trying to say is he sees how you can extrapolate a 20” tuning from this 16” tuning. As far as note range goes you might find that the 20 batter May start around a C or C# then try a 4th or 3rd up on the bottom head. I have two step by step floor tom tuning lessons on www.kennysharretts.com that if you do them on a 20” floor but extrapolate fir pitch you will find some great tunings for that 20 🤘🏻🤘🏻thank you so much for watching 🤘🏻🤘🏻
