I think so many of us have been "coming back from what seemed like a ruin" only to be blindsided by the "one" we thought we had finally gotten past. Relationships can be so good but then so painful.
I know. And what a song to do it to with. The best songs, in my opinion, are the ones with a touch of melancholy and underneath it, strength. It is where I go to find it when I am in short supply. Hope you are well tonight.
I don't know brother, I meant, I know this band but I had never give them a chance, and then I heard this song, and it just touch me, deeply, and yeah, I have to find if this is theirs best song.
One of my favorites, along with All The Wine. But I could go down a rabbit hole deciding which song is the most National, basically from Alligator going backwards. Go back to The National, listen to Threory of the Crows (lyrics are, well, the National) The Perfect Song (musically and lyrically, the National0 Pretty much everything on Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers meets this label. I found them at Alligator, took a 2nd listen, first time I didn't get it. My buddy said, listen again, we got tickets for the show, that was 2006. I've been in since then. My point is, go backwards, you will find some amazing stuff if you are willing to listen to it twice.
Tony Jofenig yeah sad songs for dirty lovers is a very The National album.... I’ve listened to their entire discography thousands of times. My comment here is mainly about how hopelessly melancholic this sounds and how it fits perfectly into what they represent. And if anything, my favourite album is High Violet and my favourite song is Bloodbuzz Ohio.
Probably overly dramatic and hyperbolic, but I stand by it. Listening to the National when I was depressed/suicidal helped me express how I was feeling without doing anything dumb. Berninger's writing and poetry is one of the reasons I start writing myself, a coping strategy I still use. So yeah, I would say so. It played its part.
It's called the sublime. The pain is so great that it's almost beautiful. Because it is produced by art, it elevates the whole series of emotions into the intellect. Courage.
I just broke up with my girlfriend, after five years of love and happiness. We loved The National, but now I'm alone in shattered like ash in the wind. I've never felt so empty
I think that he’s referring to when he lived in LA and Carin lived in London and they were split for good. He was starting to come out of what felt like ..a ruin, and see hope for his future without her. “He was solid gold, he was in the fight” for himself. When they get back together he is immediately thrown back into the fear of rejection and loss, with 1000 old wounds now at risk of reopening. The judgement of everyone who has watched them do this repeatedly in the past and told him they aren’t good together now revived. He romanticizes the time he was alone in Los Angeles, in hindsight, because he was devastated, but in control and on an upward trajectory, rather than waiting for the pattern to repeat itself. “Humiliation” is the same idea I think. When you get back with someone after a public dramatic breakup and you want them back but you feel shame in front of others for going back into that situation. I’m heavily drawing from personal experience so maybe that’s just what it says to me. Matt said in an interview once he’d rather people interpret it their own way than tell them what he meant. 🙂 “Now I only think about Los Angeles when the sound kicks out” -the sound being the music he uses to distract himself or hold himself together, “arms around the stereo.”
I listened to this band's records non-stop when I was in the grips of a terrible illness. I was completely alone, nobody wanted to have anything to do with me as they were too afraid of my sufferings - and of course it wasn't cancer or anything like that (which would have guaranteed me plenty of home visits, phone calls and presents, of course), as I'm talking about the sort of illness people to this day are still terrified of. I stayed at home, alone, in my pijama, listening to the National. And I saw that they understood what I was going through perfectly - they'll never know what a consolation they were to me. I particularly remember this song, and this is a great live version... I am still ill, though not as gravely as before, and they are still with me, with their new album.
I hope you're find and healthy. Hey, we don't really know why we are here, but I realize tha we have to enjoy everything we love until we reach our final ride. This music is an example. Stay strong.

This song is one of my favorites… It has a character of subtlety, exility, vulnerability… But at the same time it’s so powerful and it goes really deep.
Trouble will find me help me through so much. Spent years looking for my dad. When I got to his local pub He had died the day before. I drove 500 miles home with this album on repeat ❤️🩹

a friend of mine introduced The National's songs. And this is one of my favorites that saved my dark times, alone. I hope you guys get a chance to visit the Philippines.
Simply the greatest band of all time for me. This song has so much meaning for me, and I find myself reflecting over past relationships (good and bad!) whenever I have the National playing
I have loved every album from start to finish, but I think this might be number one. A little while ago, a sweet friend introduced me to The National through "Heavenfaced" and "Fake Empire",which are awesome tunes too, but i came myself to listen to other tunes, since then Pink Rabbits is my fav one
It just occurred to me that Matt & Carin are like a modern F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife, Zelda. And in both cases the passion and emotional turmoil is channeled into priceless creative works.
These guys have only one song, but it's PERFECT. Dozens of slightly different versions, all of them rewrites of that one great song. And since Bryce Dessner is trained as a classical composer, he has the knowledge and ability to get every tiny musical detail right in a way few rock guys can.
God knows how many times I've cried to this song.
Me too , but crying helps you to get over ir. Mucho Love 🙏
I think so many of us have been "coming back from what seemed like a ruin" only to be blindsided by the "one" we thought we had finally gotten past. Relationships can be so good but then so painful.
Me too.❤

This song is the most The National The National song ever.

@@nestorsa3932 I Need My Girl and About Tody are my 2 favorite songs by them, both haunting

Go back to The National, listen to
Threory of the Crows (lyrics are, well, the National)
The Perfect Song (musically and lyrically, the National0

Listening to this song and crying... I miss my daughter
This band, this music... It saved my life.
Charlie Hutchinson saved your life? Really?

Keep with expressing yourself. You realize that we're all going through this together. It saved me too.
it helps me too :)
This is such a great song. Whenever I listen to it, I feel sad yet, for some weird reason, happy at the same time. It's hard to describe.
I call it "the national effect"
I know the name isnt very original but I cant think of anything else...
+hiblackie I know right man, i feel like it gives you a calm and enjoyable sadness though.
+Mrjohnny164 extremely fitting!
I feel happy but also a great melancholy; I don't know which is the culprit of my tears.
It's called the sublime. The pain is so great that it's almost beautiful. Because it is produced by art, it elevates the whole series of emotions into the intellect. Courage.
I was a television version of a person with a broken heart....Perfect
I just broke up with my girlfriend, after five years of love and happiness.
We loved The National, but now I'm alone in shattered like ash in the wind.
I've never felt so empty
this must be one of the most perfect songs ever written. it's just... home
"I was solid gold, i was in the fight..".Wow, so true..... who in the hell didnt ever felt that way trying to get a love back...

That's so Kafkaesque...
Stay strong, my friend
So brave of you to share. Wishing you all the very best
The arrangements, the tempo, the voice... everything about this song is really classy. Amazing.
"You didn't see me I was falling apart

One of the greatest songs of our time.

I thought it was "When the sound kicks out"?
Its the perfect song.
It is isnt like rain but more like sea, i dont ask for it but this song just comes over me!!!
by far the best comment I've read scince a long.
One of my all time favourite lines and also the line "I couldn't see you coming so far, I just turn around and there you are" god this song is perfect.
This song is one of my favorites… It has a character of subtlety, exility, vulnerability… But at the same time it’s so powerful and it goes really deep.
Gonna have to look up “exility “
Trouble will find me help me through so much.
Spent years looking for my dad.
When I got to his local pub
He had died the day before.
I drove 500 miles home with this album on repeat ❤️🩹
I fight for myself every day. I want to let people go from the present, because they are beating in my heart, in my body every day. The past is a pain that still haunts me. Just close your eyes and listen to this song if all the medicine and fighting is powerless.
✨💫☄️
I hope you be better right now
I can not compare them to any band, as they stand out alone. Very awesome indeed.
Tina Koehl listen to Hayden. Everything I long for . Although this song sounds like bass song .
I mean, their earlier shit sounded a bit like silver jews
Nick Cave
This song is my spirit animal

Listening to them perform this piece at Berkeley was one of the greatest experiences of my young life.
I seen tue live three times and I cant pick which one was the best. They are just amazing.
Perfect Performance, watching in December of 2020 , Greetings from Brazil !
Easily their most underrated song.
no dude, I think Lean is their most underrated song.
Nah turtleneck is the nationals forgotten masterpiece
I dunno. Everyone I know rates it pretty bloody highly.
Why is it underrated dude? Bullshit
...but everyone loves it??? I'd say it's properly rated, considering it has a 100 on AOTY
Super musique, toujours dans nos rêves et dans nos cœurs, elle nous transporte au pays merveilleux & mélodieux
Saw them play this wonderful track live in Manchester (England) at the end of August.
Fantastic track by a great band. In my opinion the best there is today.
My favourite live gig since 1989 and in my all-time top ten live gigs.
The National are also in my all-time top ten artists in the company of the Beatles, The Velvet Underground, Wall of Voodoo, Fleetwood Mac, Joy Division, REM, Dead Can Dance etc.
I'm so surprised you want to dance with me now
I was just getting used to living life without you around
I'm so surprised you want to dance with me now
You always said I held you way too high off the ground...
+CatZumba love how he uses that high off the ground line literally and figuratively
“Bona Drag is still on”
Has to be a Morrissey reference right. I love this band
I don't even know how to describe what I feel when listening to this song~
I only discovered The National this year. This song got me through my dad's death. Absolutely beautifully heartbreaking 💕
This song makes me cry, this version especially. It's so gorgeous
Seriously… This song is my mantra. I simply ADOOOOOORE this song!!! The BAND!!! ❤️❤️❤️

This is the for me best song in entire music history for now
a friend of mine introduced The National's songs. And this is one of my favorites that saved my dark times, alone. I hope you guys get a chance to visit the Philippines.
this version is just magic
Listening this music and watching her photo made me sure I love her
This song is love itself 💜💜💜
Una delle canzoni più belle che abbia mai ascoltato in tutta la mia vita.
This song! I love it so much. Helped get me thru the loss of my beloved dog.
I don’t know why but this song gives me warm feelings of a sunny spring morning.
And there it is. One drop of tear just slipped from my eyes
After two years here I am again. I am back here with many emotions and hurt heart. Things shouldn’t have gone this way…
Simply the greatest band of all time for me. This song has so much meaning for me, and I find myself reflecting over past relationships (good and bad!) whenever I have the National playing
I have loved every album from start to finish, but I think this might be number one. I'm gonna listen a thousand more times before I declare it absolute. :) Thanks so much, The National, for always reminding me that we all experience a depth of emotions that range from suicidal to the precipice of joy ~ in that sense, you bring us all together in this magical way of yours. Thank you.
Absolutely beautiful track. This track is the cleansing fire that cleans all the bullshit from your soul..
You never show the trombonist who adds so much to your sound
Love this song so much, just listened to it over and over about twenty times
All these feelings. Perfectly fitted into this song.
I love this song and this version!!! Omg! Love it more 🖤
another year,
same favorite song
I liked the lyrics enough to look like I was being rude looking them up on my phone at the open mic this week!
absolutel my favourite song by this band.

I didn’t ask for this pain it just came over me I love a storm, but I don’t love lightning
All the waters coming up so fast, that’s frightening
Am I the one you think about when you’re sitting in your faintin' chair
drinking pink rabbits?
Am I the one you think about when you’re sitting in your faintin' chair
drinking pink rabbits?
And everybody was gone
I was standing in the street 'cause I was trying not to crack
I was solid gold
I was in the fight
I was coming back from what seemed like a ruin
I couldn’t see you coming so far
I just turn around and there you are
I’m so surprised you want to dance with me now
I was just getting used to living life without you around
I’m so surprised you want to dance with me now
You always said I held you way too high off the ground
*You didn’t see me I was falling apart
*
I was a white girl in a crowd of white girls in the park
You didn’t see me I was falling apart
I was a television version of a person with a broken heart
You didn’t see me I was falling apart
I was a white girl in a crowd of white girls in a park
You didn’t see me I was falling apart
I was a television version of a person with a broken heart
And everybody was gone
You were standin' in the street 'cause you were trying not to crack up And bona drag was still on Now I only think about Los Angeles when the sun kicks out
Now I only think about Los Angeles when the sun kicks out
You said it would be painless
The needle in the doll
You said it would be painless
It wasn’t that at all
You said it would be painless
The needle in the doll
You said it would be painless
It wasn’t that at all (when the sun kicks out)
You said it would be painless
The needle in the doll (when the sun kicks out)
You said it would be painless
It wasn’t that at all
All the waters coming up so fast, it's frightening.
I'm broken 💔.. but this lefted me in a new place. So painless.
A little while ago, a sweet friend introduced me to The National through "Heavenfaced" and "Fake Empire",which are awesome tunes too, but i came myself to listen to other tunes, since then Pink Rabbits is my fav one

I've never been in a relationship, but I'm still listening to this song.
MrDragoon334 You’ll eventually understand how this song fits like a fine glove... a leather classy shinny glove.
You're better off by yourself. Casual relationships are ok, but don't go looking for anything serious
Is this what Q calls a grower... It's been 7 years... I'm starting to like it...
Falling apart, loving and waiting, that's me, in an endless rush for someone, something, a road of faith, a road of...

As am I, friend, as am I... 🖤
I got chills from that woah
I left my heart here

It just occurred to me that Matt & Carin are like a modern F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife, Zelda. And in both cases the passion and emotional turmoil is channeled into priceless creative works.
Love this band
Can't deal with these feels...
Reminds of a time when i met a girl who i liked, when she leaved i always listened to this song.
See you at Edmonton Folk Fest 2022. I’ll def have a Pink Rabbit
These guys have only one song, but it's PERFECT.
Dozens of slightly different versions, all of them rewrites of that one great song. And since Bryce Dessner is trained as a classical composer, he has the knowledge and ability to get every tiny musical detail right in a way few rock guys can.
I love this song
