I was driving home after talking to a guy I met in the spring of 2011 when we were both about to turn 20. We'd hung out a good bit that summer, and I remember one afternoon, after talking to him all day, I was driving the 50 mile ride home and realized I loved him (and that he was the first person I'd ever truly loved). This song had just come on the radio because the album was debuting, and it played with the windows rolled down and the smell of grass and honeysuckle coming through as these new emotions swirled in my chest. 7 years later those opening notes still hit me like a sack of bricks and it takes me right back to my Volvo station wagon, the smell of summer, and how good it felt to have his arms around me. We never started dating, but remained friends until we fell apart from each other for a while due to life. I got engaged, broke up. He dated girls, broke up with them. Last spring we reconnected like no time had passed. We're getting married next year and I'll be walking down the aisle to this. It's the highlight on the soundtrack of my life. Thank you, Justin.
Edit: Wow, thank you all for your kind words! It's July 2021 and we're still going strong. He's the best thing that's ever happened to me. Keep your head up if you haven't found your one yet, they're out there 😁

My brother showed me this song in 2011 and he said that it reminded him of our late Father. I instantly fell in love with it (even though I didn’t understand the meaning of the lyrics) and it always would make me think of my brother for showing me this song. In March, my brother passed and when I play this song it brings me to tears every time. To my big brother, you will always be a part of me, and unfortunately apart from me..

Just came across this song again, 8 and a half years after the guy I was dating went to see Bon Iver in concert. Almost 9 years later and I’m still with the same guy, married, and about to welcome our son into the world. Lying in bed listening to this whilst my baby is moving around in my belly has brought tears to my eyes.

I wanted to share a story with all you. I’m Chilean, and the first time I came upon bon iver was in 2012, with this song actually. I remember browsing through the music channels on my tv and Holocene came along. I fell in love instantly with the music. Ever since, his music has been by my side through very hard times. It’s almost impossible to describe in words the power of his music.
Anyways, I was lucky enough to travel this year to Minnesota to visit family. My uncles offered us tickets to any concert we (me and my little brother) wanted to go while we were here. We saw that Bon Iver was playing during the time we were going to be there. But the tickets were sold out. We went anyways to watch from the street. But my brother (who’s a real cheecky bastard) figured a way of getting us tickets with people who were leaving the concert. We entered through the side and walked up to almost the first row. It was truly sublime. I couldn’t believe what was happening. When Bon Iver took out the acoustic guitar and started playing the beautiful arpeggio intro of Holocene I bursted into tears. I cried the whole song. It was a dream come true. I just want to thank you Justin for your music. I’ll never forget that day.

Jack Kanov yeah you don’t know how “auto tune” works then.

    • @zacharyjohns1157
      @zacharyjohns1157 5 років тому +1

Jack Kanov well, for one, you conflated pitch correction with auto---tune, so there’s that. Secondly, the minor intonations of his voice aren’t being matched in the harmonies. A backing track, sure maybe. So yeah, Did I educated you?

    • @aubakian9422
      @aubakian9422 5 років тому +7

The harmonies are live here. I assume he's singing with Sean Carey, Mike Noice and Matthew McCaughan. If you're referring to the "Messina" that they use on tracks from the new record - Vernon isn't using that here. This is obvious because Vernon has his hands full with a guitar here. The Messina is a kind of live instrument triggered through a keyboard that shifts the vocal mic live into a harmonic based on the key being played.

    • @zacharyjohns1157
      @zacharyjohns1157 5 років тому

Jack Kanov you are conflating the two. Auto tune uses pitch correction, yes. But every recording studio in the world uses pitch correction. Does that mean every recorded band sounds like T Pain since pitch correction and auto tune are the same thing? DUMBFUCK.

    • @zacharyjohns1157
      @zacharyjohns1157 5 років тому

Jack Kanov you said it was a “harmony box I.e. fake”

    [Verse 1]
"Someway, baby, it's part of me, apart from me"
    You're laying waste to Halloween
You fucked it, friend, it's on its head, it struck the street
You're in Milwaukee, off your feet
    [Pre-Chorus]
    And at once, I knew
    I was not magnificent
    [Chorus]
    Strayed above the highway aisle
    Jagged vacance, thick with ice
I could see for miles, miles, miles
    [Verse 2]
Third and Lake, it burnt away, the hallway
Was where we learned to celebrate
Automatic bought the years you'd talk for me
That night you played me "Lip Parade"
Not the needle, nor the thread, the lost decree
Saying nothing, that's enough for me
    [Pre-Chorus]
    And at once, I knew
    I was not magnificent
    [Chorus]
Hulled far from the highway aisle
    Jagged vacance, thick with ice
I could see for miles, miles, miles
    [Verse 3]
Christmas night, it clutched the light, the hallow bright
Above my brother, I, and tangled spines
We smoked the screen to make it what it was to be
Now, to know it in my memory
    [Pre-Chorus]
    And at once, I knew
    I was not magnificent
    [Chorus]
    High above the highway aisle
    Jagged vacance, thick with ice
I could see for miles, miles, miles

Thanks for reminding myself on my own advice now and again guys. You all are deserving of all the kindness in this world, if not for just to have checked in with a stranger. Bless you.
Living by a recently adopted mantra really helped me see that we are all weak and vulnerable in more ways than we choose to admit or choose to show (ourselves, and most importantly those other that matter to us). Continuing to entrench my capacity for empathy and not fall for 'first assumptions' on life, circumstances and people have been... life-changing.
The mantra? "Assume others' positive intent. Respond in kind. Have compassion."

@@rayhere7925 how's life been for you mate? Wanted to check in on a stranger :)
I think you'll find many a friend in these comments who also wish they'd love themselves just a tad bit more. I'm one of them. It's also the same reason why I love this song so much. I think the true realization of 'not being magnificent' can be confronting for some people, but to me it's one of the most liberating realizations possible. We're all just humans. Trying to make it through life. Trying to do well and wanting to be important and to matter. And in doing so, I think we often hold ourselves to unrealistic standards of being 'important' or 'grand'. Whereas in reality, it is totally fine to not be magnificent and just live a 'small', 'unimportant' life where we prioritize happiness, love, and kindness for ourselves and the people directly surrounding us.
I don't know, maybe I'm just rambling, but I've find so much solace in this song and the realization that comes with it. I hope maybe it helps you as well to be a bit more kind to yourself and I hope you're doing well, friend.

Me and my uncle are a big fans of Bon Iver, especially this particular song. We listened to this song everytime we were going somewhere together. I still vividly remember the feeling when this song played with him together in a car on the way up to the mountains area. Sadly, my uncle passed away due to car accident last week, and today i come accross this beautiful live set by Bon Iver. I couldnt hold my tears. This song brings back so much memories of him. Thanks Justin for this beautiful performance.

"Someway, baby, it's part of me, apart from me
    You're laying waste to Halloween
You fucked it friend, it's on its head, it struck the street
You're in Milwaukee, off your feet
And at once I knew I was not magnificent
    Strayed above the highway aisle
    Jagged vacance, thick with ice
And I could see for miles, miles, miles
Third and Lake it burnt away, the hallway
Was where we learned to celebrate
Automatic bought the years you'd talk for me
That night you played me 'Lip Parade'
Not the needle, nor the thread, the lost decree
Saying nothing, that's enough for me
And at once I knew I was not magnificent
Huddled far from the highway aisle
    Jagged vacance, thick with ice
And I could see for miles, miles, miles
Christmas night, it clutched the light, the hallow bright
Above my brother, I and tangled spines
We smoked the screen to make it what it was to be
Now to know it in my memory
And at once I knew I was not magnificent
    High above the highway aisle
    Jagged vacance, thick with ice
But I could see for miles, miles, miles"

I was riding on my friend's pickup car.

One of the best night of my life.

There's something about "Jagged vacance thick with ice" in this performance. It feels so much more sad and powerful without that last tone difference on "ice". Really puts the whole chorus in another mood. Very moving.

This version is my go-to 'going home' song after a long day and night at work..
And has got me through some pretty tough times..
When it comes on coincidentally at the right points in my life..it always..always brings me to tears..without fail.
I also never play it when other people are around..it's become..more than just a song for me..it's become a place of refuge..a place of solace that I run to whenever life gets to me..or when I remember my loved ones who have passed on..
I only listen to this version..thank you The Current..and most of all..Thank You Mr. Vernon.
Edited: 2023 about to end and I would NOT rather be anywhere else but here..home.
