Not to tear down anything I’m this video. He gives you great insight into technique. But a big part of Chino’s style is his production. He uses lots of ambient modulation combined with heavy compression. And most of all he achieves the whispery vocals by cupping a handheld mic. Most of Deftones early records he sang in the control room with a Shure 58. And these days he still uses a handheld for screams. Just a little more insight.

Yessssss!! One of my 4 favorite singers. Thank you so much. His voice and his way to sing it can transmit too much emotion and pain with that whispers, it's magical. I recommend to everyone to listen Team Sleep, Crosses and Palms, you will be not disappointed.
Now, I just need Michael Lessard, Rody Walker and Tommy Giles to make my life complete.

@@drippinwet774 I love Deftones too! I’m not sure if I’m a baritone with decent head voice or a tenor. I have some of my music on my channel (maybe you already looked since you guessed my vocal range). You can hear some deft ones influence in my vocals on the bridge in Emerald Shore.
But I’m working on an EP with my band that is going to be very experimental and heavily Volta influenced. Subscribe please if you’re interested :) a lot of the music on this channel is old crap and I’ve gotten a lot better, both vocally and instrumentally. Also, all my stuff on here was recorded on GarageBand on my shitty old iPhone 7 with its built in mic so don’t expect pro production. Haha

Hey there, been following for a while and I'm really enjoying your content. It's very enlightening for someone like me who tries to sing but doesn't have any kind of study or experience behind it.
Would you consider doing an episode about Daryl Palumbo from Glassjaw in the future?
Something I find really hard to replicate is how he seems to transition from clean vocals to "screeching" (apologies for the non-technical terms).
In any case, thanks for all the great lessons!

didn't expect to see a video about chino.
he does one of my favourite high pitches in music. also some of the melodies he writes are absolutely brilliant in terms of creativity and range. examples: beware, option (from his other band Crosses), 976-evil and (l)mirl.
another thing I love about his vocals (the production is also responsible for this) make you hear notes that aren't even there even during the quiter/simpler bits. thanks for this great video!

The thing i like about Deftones is that the vocal performances on their albums always sound raw and you can often hear his voice straining under the pressure. But rather than edit it out and go for a 'perfect' take for every vocal line, they leave it in. So the end result is more authentic, passionate and impactful - credit must go to terry date for defining this approach.
