  • Okay so it's finally here! Here are my final thoughts and feelings on Jurassic Park: Trespasser! What I personally believe to be the most underrated Jurassic Park video game ever made! Now I go over why I feel the way I do in the video and let you know whether or not I recommend the game as a whole. Most of you probably already know the answer by not but I gave it some time to try and collect all of my thoughts on what this experience can offer new players as well as how it's held up over the last 20 years. Due to the fact that we currently have nearly no Jurassic World video games whatsoever, I think it's important to remember this particular game that has been fixed with a wide variety of mods since it's release. Again THIS IS NOT THE ORIGINAL BROKEN VERSION OF THE GAME. I never played that and honestly don't think I ever want to. This one on the other hand...this is a different story! Hope you all enjoy! :D

I hate the term 'true fan' cause that causes nothing but conflict and intolerance in a fan base. To me if a term like 'true fan' should ever be used it should mean something like "respecting other fans opinions even if you have the opposite opinions" cause after all we are talking about a franchise that we love. Anyway good video as always Klayton.

I agree. The amount of angry people I have met on social media just because I said Jurassic world fallen kingdom is my favourite film out of the entire franchise so far.
It's ridiculous! The first Jurassic park film is what started it all off I know. But if someone else likes the sequels then so what?
It's like the Indominus rex. I LOVE the Indominus rex. It's my favourite hybrid dinosaur. I think it's so cool and badass.
BUT if you say that to anyone on social media? Oh boy. Your a moron. Idiot. How could you like such a stupidly designed made up creature? Etc.
      So frustrating.

With all of the advanced software of today, I still don't see why a Jurassic World game like Trespasser hasn't been made. To have a high quality Jurassic World survival horror game would be fantastic, and could even serve as some good side canon that would be much more believable than JPTG.

Hey Klay, buddy, chum, I just want to thank you for playing Trespasser when you did. I had the opportunity to go to Costa Rica for a few weeks and got to listen to Jurassic Park the novel (thanks for that sweet audible link) while there AND watch you play while I was bed ridden one day and while waiting in an airport. You really did have a hand to play with the wonderful experience I had down there. I just finished watching today and I feel a bit melancholy but happy that you took us along for the ride. And I'm just grateful for that and I wanted you to know. I'll see you in the next comment section, and as always

Jurassic Park: Trespasser, although it was not well made, was part of my childhood. I enjoyed this game way too much. When I was young I didn't care about all the bugs. I just love how ambitious it was, and how cool it was at least to me!

The biggest problem with Trespasser is that for its time, it was a bridge too far. The developers had so much planned, but they realized too late they’d bitten off more than they could chew.
I would personally like to see a remastered version, complete with all the cut levels and dialogue. However, it might due good to reign in some of the novel canon present, because it does make things more complicated.

Fun fact: Crichton's 1990 novel is based on an idea for a movie script he had sometime in the early 1980's.
And I played a demo of Trespasser in 1998. It was equal parts fun, exciting and maddening. Even though it was buggy as hell, I remember playing the demo quite a lot because it was still pretty groundbreaking overall. The idea of realistic physics, wide open terrain, no numerical health indicator, no interface. Bold stuff back in the day, I tell ya ;)

Awesome review man, two thumbs up from me. I'm glad I was able to introduce you to this amazing game and to help you grow your channel more. I'm a big fan of the franchise and game, and your channel too, I like all Jurassic Park things just as quality, i try not to favor one over the other to much myself. I used to play this game a lot though when it first came out and it was far ahead of its time with its physics engine and with all its old faults and plotholes, and criticism I didn't care, I still thought it always was a great game regardless. And I agree with others, games that fill in that gaps between movies and give you an immersive world and lore to get involved in and experience like this game are far and few between, these park builders they are pumping now days are for sure getting old.

What a wonderful and heartwarming look at a much maligned game. Thank you so much. I'm sure the developers would be proud to hear your take on the game. Speaking of which, have you thought about doing a proper full retrospective on the history of the game's development? You could examine everything all the way through to it's release, it's reception, and even how fans later fixed the game so that it could be enjoyed to the fullest. I don't think something like that exists online. I wonder if you could interview some of those involved with it's creation since even a quick glance at your channel shows your passion for the material and would more than likely soften even the hardest of closed hearts so that they would feel comfortable talking about their experiences. I don't know. It's just a thought. But I can assure you that I certainly would enjoy watching a proper full retrospective like that, especially if it was you doing it. Anyway, thanks again for all of your hard work. I don't know how you do it, but you continue to keep coming up with amazing obscure facts and concepts about Jurassic Park that never cease to both amaze and interest me. Take care and keep up the awesome and passionate work! :)

I wouldn’t say it’s underrated. It’s a clunky awkward game slapped together in a hurry by a small team. In the context of the time of its release the game promised a lot and delivered none of it.
Today it holds value in novelty for being a Jurassic Park experience that most haven’t had the chance to try out. If you love JP I’d definitely give it a go. As an example of gaming tho, it’s a complete failure. It’s a great example of a game ahead of its time, the technology wasn’t ready. Maybe a couple years more and this could have been a great game.
In the words of Ian Malcolm “You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could, and before you even knew what you had, you patented it, and packaged it, and slapped it on a plastic lunchbox, and now you wanna sell it”
Now I did see a group working to recreate this game in CryEngine. That would be worth a look for sure.

    • @EulogyfortheAngels
      @EulogyfortheAngels 4 роки тому

Depends on what you mean by 'complete failure'. I'd imagine a complete failure would, by definition, not have any sort of fan base or cause for nostalgia. Though, I would agree with that sentiment in terms of profit margin and failing to manifest what the game was capable of.

I played this when it came out and recently started playing it again at 5:30 you say the game is intuitive. Maybe I just interpreted this wrong but, back then and now. I would not call the game intuitive at all. Aiming you could get used to but With every jump, door opening or small passage way you struggle to simply keep your gun in your hand. I know you can wear one on your back but you want all the fire power you can carry while it's not readily available. Other than that, great review, and I agree it's very underrated. Stuff to see your health status through the Tattoo on your chest and ammo status given vocally to have zero HUD on your screen was just great back then!

Trespasser IS canon to the movies continuity/canon.
When it was released, it was confirmed to be canon, since then, no update about its canons status have been made by Universal or someone having rights on the franchise against it.
Reasons why are because the game today, and since a long time, have gone so far into oblivion and was forgetted that nobody within Universal take this game into account when making the recents, current Jurassic (World) movies or related canon products.
(So hence why, unsurprisingly, there can be some inconsistencies in the recent Jurassic movies medias we got these recents years).
The fact it include elements from the books of Crichton do not constitute evidences showing that this game isn't canon with the movies. It is.
Adding elements from a book on which a franchise is based in the following sequels of the first adaptation is basically almost what every franchises do.
(Meg 2 for example have a scene with a T-rex completely taken from one of the books of the Meg novels series).
The game is clearly wanted to take place within the movies continuity.
If inconsistencies or errors are present leading to this idea, it's important to keep in head that this game was in developement hell for almost all of its production.
It's so isn't surprising that the final result is filled of errors leading to confusion and giving the false idea it isn't canon with the movies.
But it is indeed canon with the movies.
Aside this point, it was a perfect review.
I agree on everything all along.
    👍

If they do remake this, I hope they don't change much about it. Sure, improve the gameplay and correct the lore, but things like Attenborough's narration, massive landscapes and so on I hope they keep. Not only that, I hope they incorporate what was originally planned from the start. Give the dinosaurs actual behaviors aside from hunger and aggression, make it actual open world without limiting levels, increase the variety of dinosaurs and so on. Unlike back then, we have the technology to make it happen!

I just retired, and just beat Trespasser AGAIN! In over 50 years of life, I have beat this game about 20 times. It is one of the most IMMERSIVE and best RPG games I have played. Resident Evil 4 is another favorite. Trespasser is old graphics and some, awkard controls. But to the Jurassic Park fan - you get to walk around in the park after evacuation battle dinosaurs all the way to the top of the highest mountain on the island. BEYOND EPIC! I challenge someone to re make this - mostly the same with MODERN graphics. I can't find anything today where the game is EPIC while you are stuck in Jurassic Park. FANTASTIC game!

Honestly, you can sum up this game up with the one word that makes it good. “Charm.”
The soundtrack, the voice overs, the puzzles, lots of guns, and being an open world. That’s enough to make it good.
If this was recreated to be more updated, the obvious bugs taken away, maybe Ann being able to hold a few more things (like many games give the ability to), maybe some more survival horror like hiding in a locker or closet with a dinosaur trying to sniff you out, etc. This game could be amazing!

Finally got round to playing this on my Windows 98 laptop this morning. It's so engaging and atmospheric and I can't quite believe how advanced the physics are for its day. It's arguably still more advanced than your average 1st person shooter in that you have to actually aim the GUN (rather than a cross hair welded to the centre of your line of sight). Fending of dinosaurs is satisfying and engaging because of this. You actually feel like a person exploring an environment rather than a hovering camera with a cross hair.
The storytelling is subtle and very engaging too as is the 3D Sensaura sound (if you have the right hardware.)
Has its flaws of course but a great game. A real lost treasure.

Disclaimer: My only experience with Trespasser is watching Klayton play it.
Personally, I disagree that Trespasser is a GREAT game. I agree that it gets shit on a lot, but I personally see too many problems with it to give it an automatic thumbs up. Firstly, I feel the animation system for the dinosaurs is really wonky. I get they wanted to go for a Grow Up-style footstep system, but it really doesn't work and many of the dinosaurs walk incredibly awkwardly and unrealistically. Second, I feel the game's incredibly open level design comes at the extreme detriment to the visuals because the level paths can be so vast, meaning that many other games of the day with more constrained level designs like Crash 3, Metal Gear Solid, Medievil and Spyro often fulfill their visuals better than Trespasser can. I also think that the sound design can be kinda... strange, especially when it comes to the Tyrannosaurs and their footsteps. The gunplay can also be incredibly obtuse, with very poor feedback regarding how much damage you're doing and whether your shots have hit. Coupled with the vague aiming, it means you're often wasting shots that you dearly need, either missing or pumping in way too many bullets just to make sure. And lastly, while I realize it's a 90s game, it's pretty disgusting to me that your health meter is on the protagonist's left tit and you constantly need to look down her shirt when you take damage; that could have EASILY been placed on her hand or forearm for the same effect.
Ultimately, if I wanted to play a game about being stuck on a lost island filled with dinosaurs with an emphasis on survival and a lack of a HUD... I'd play the 2005 King Kong game. If it were a AAA Jurassic Park game with high production values, amazing graphics and animation, and VO from the movie cast, it'd be Jurassic World Evolution.
Make no mistake though, I don't want to take away from Klayton's experience playing Trespasser. His Let's Play of it is one of my favourites, and it was AWESOME seeing him play through it and be so smitten with the game, and I'm so happy that he's found a JP game that speaks to him so personally. While I don't agree with his opinion, I'm happy that he's happy with the game.

  • @gozinta82
    @gozinta82 2 роки тому

I would definitely say that due to the community in trescom, the game has become much better in it's playability. Not that it's a garbage game, but I do remember the issues that it had when it came out back in the 90's. One thing I remember, was that graphics acceleration was fairly new at the time, so running the game at it's intended frame rate was hard to do. The way the original game worked, was that it would register certain things during certain frames (like input, aiming, etc) and if you had a hiccup in your rendering it would sometimes not register and it would cause all sorts of issues (like not registering shots, missing shots, being a little off on aiming, not being fast enough for a jump or not jumping high enough. not jumping at all and just falling, etc).
Another thing was the weapons would get caught and dropped way more often. You'd lose weapons while platforming, or getting attacked, while going through houses. Another thing I remember was since the draw distance back in the day was prety short (you mention like turok and the like), it was similar on PC. The original draw distance wasn't as far if i remember. At least the LOD models would be cut out much closer than this version, and the textures were much lower res. They would only show at higher detail if you had the detail maxxed and were up close. Things like text textures were barely readable, unless you had it on max settings. Doing things like dropping items or opening doors dropped the frame rate quite a bit on older pc's. I still beat the game, but I agree. I wish it was longer and didn't have as many dead boring filler spots.

I played most of the JP games back in the day and I loved them all as I did with the films too, but I gotta say The Lost World JP for the ps1 is my all time favorite I mean c'mon playing as the Rex AND the Raptor taking out all those Ingen hunters was beyond EPIC!!! Who else remembers the good ol days or am I that old??

Klayton, you may want to consider extending the series a few more episodes by downloading some custom levels from TresCom! A lot of them look pretty well made and look like they would provide some good content.

Attenborough's work obviously comes from an earlier script in the Lost World that was going to follow the Novel's backstory a bit more. Regardless of such, it's still his best work as an actor, and it deserves everyone's attention.

While many fans want to see a Jurassic Park first player shooter with a strong horror atmosphere, I personally would love to see an open-world RPG that spans the Five Deaths with hundreds of dinosaur encounters (both herbivore and carnivore), hidden InGen and Biosyn lore, and international groups with different agendas (scientists, mercenaries, criminals) that you have to deal with in addition to the dinosaurs.

Such an on point review. For all the flack it gets this is one of the best Jurassic games ever made. A remastered version of this could be the quintessential Jurassic Park experience

I.. just watched a 20 year old game review lol, the things my love of Jurassic Park put me through.
I was impressed by the game mainly for it's use of physics, the environment reminded me of another dinosaur game from the late 90s called Carnivores.
I would actually be pretty excited to play this if it could get a remastered version, maybe not the most advanced level of graphics, but at least Xbox 360/PS3 quality.

I wish we had a 3rd-person open world adventure shooter (like Tomb Raider) that takes place on Isla Nublar where you would play as a Biosyn Merc trying to complete Nedry's mission to retrieve embryos right after the disaster of '93.
Can you imagine exploring Nublar and being able to go ANYWHERE and drive anything with today's graphics and AI?

They need to remake this game as a VR game, I mean it’s basically already a VR game with how you control her arm. Slap another arm on there, overhaul the graphics, give the story a touch up, and bam Jurassic Park Trespasser VR edition. The perfect way to enjoy the game

I don't know how to explain this but I really miss the Jurassic Park universe back in the 90s
In books, movies and games is all about those islands, mysterious places where thinks gone insanely wrong
Such feel of adventures, danger and mad science
Yeah.. I'm going to read the Lost World again tonight !

I've really enjoyed this series, Klayton; this was always one of my favourite games growing up. I got it in about 2001 in a "collector's edition" which presumably contained some patches, as it ran alright on my PC of the time. It's certainly flawed and can be frustrating (so many bloody crates), but I always loved the atmosphere, the storytelling and the scenery it contained. It NEEDS a modern-day remake!

This game is freaking amazing, and I don't care what anybody says. You hit a lot of the key points on the head. It has problems but damn is it fun and terrifying, and worth it to play through for Attenborough's narration alone. It's a shame that it plays with the canon the way it does, because it would have been an amazing addition to the lore had it stuck with what had already been lain down

Hey Klayton its been awhile since i commented and i agree with this having recently watched your playthrough as well as your points on people being way too hard on anything that came out after the first or second movie. In my opinion i think the series could be better in places but that doesn't stop me from watching any of the movies, not even 3 which i think is my least favorite but i still enjoy it, hell lost world and fallen kingdom are my favorite due to their darker tones. As always thanks for the content keep it up!

This game disserves a re make, with modern game graphics, new dialogue to fix the plot holes it made to the franchise, better A.I. , and make it a longer game. Also add more Dinosaurs like Compies, Dilophasaurus, Pteranodons, Pachycephalosaurus, Triceratops, and maybe the Spinosaurus

If I ever get a chance to revisit this game, I probably will (haven't played it since 98). Also, anyone who plays the "real fan" card should have their opinion immediately discredited. If you like something, you're a fan. Casual, obsessive, doesn't matter: a fan's a fan.
