As far as I know, the baseqi 303a doesn't have the additional pins that UHS-Ii uses. That's probably why you didn't notice much difference in speed between the two cards.
I hear though that is causes the SD card to be super slow, well below even UHS I standards at about 25mbs read and write speeds. Baseqi said they're making one specifically for the new 14 and 16 inch with much faster speeds and they'll be in Space Grey
@@halfalligator6518 a guy did a test with it on Mac Rumours forum and said a 95mb/s card only got 25mb/s speeds. Would love to know if anyone who did a test and can contradict that. Wish tips guy would do a speed test
@@loughrey101 It does. I bought the old 303 and the newest 420. Tested with SanDisk Red and Black cards and Lexar Red cards. In fact, it's not just the slow problem. Using 303 on my mbp14, the speed of 20M/s is much lower than the speed when using the official card sleeve. In addition, the continuous copying of files exceeding 40G will directly MAKE THE Finder DIE, which can only be recovered by restarting the computer. I think it is caused by the slow speed and the hibernation timeout of peripherals. This is by no means a problem with my use of TF cards, for the quality of SanDisk red and black cards is obvious to all. After switching to 420, I haven't encountered a stuck problem, and SanDisk can also run at a write speed of 90M/s throughout the whole process. Of course, the Lexar is still as slow as ever, but that's its own problem.
BaseQi have completed development of the new version for the Macbook Pro M1 Pro, it's UHS2 speeds and they have both a Space Grey model and a silver model. They sent me pics of both colours and the packaging, they look amazing. Release date is within 4 weeks (they're aiming for late July) so people here should wait if you're considering buying
I’m so glad you made this video because I was facing those questions when I was deciding which solution I was going to go for. I got the 1TB jet drive and haven’t looked back since, amazing product. Thanks so much for making this video.
I just picked up a 512GB Jumpdrive. With those speeds, I'm just going to return it and get the BaseQi and a 512GB card for only a few bucks more. Then I can upgrade to a 1TB card if I ever need to. Thanks for making this video!

Cool overview. I got the adapter for my 4tb 16" mbp and threw a 512gb microsd, not for extra storage in my case, but as an always-plugged in local time machine backup solution. This with another backup option (icloud) is a convenient backup option, if you don't lose or have the laptop stolen of course!
I had the same idea to use it as time machine backup storage. However, I saw some of the other comments here suggested that the microsd cards are unreliable. Do you think this would be reliable enough for a time machine backup?
@@mpatterson9126 if you are really concerned about the endurance of the microsd, both Sandisk and Samsung make high endurance, and sandisk’s Pro endurance cards. I use this the pro endurance in my dash cams and a mix of Samsung and Sandisk high endurance in my security cams. They are much more reliable cards, but they cost a bit more and I don’t think they come bigger than 256gb
^ This. Andrew's title is misleading, since the microSD card, while UHS-II, it is not even operating at those speeds. It is still UHS-I. The BaseQI adapter NEEDS the additional pins.
Thanks for the review! Still rocking my 256GB JetDrive Lite from 2016, it's been great, but getting a little slow and lacking capacity now, would love something quicker but doesn't look like there's anything about.
Of course you won’t get the uhs-2 speed from a uhs-1 adapter, this comparison is pretty nonsense. At least try an uhs-2 adapter for prograde card and see how it performs.
This is always a great option to have. My budget isn’t endless and if I get the 512gb for my macbook, I can get the max processor and 36gb ram, but if I get the 1TB storage I have to drop either the ram to 18gb or the processor. I have an external 4TB nvme ssd for storage but you always want some files you might use soon on the laptop so I can pick this up and a microsd card when I get some extra cash later and just go with minimum storage. Don’t need fast speeds for videos, comics and other media like that.
The BaseQi should be so much cheaper than $25. All it does is route the microSD leads to the SD leads. That's why a standard adapter is **checks Amazon** $3.40.
Economies of scale. It's gonna be more expensive to produce this niche adapter because of lower volume. But there's probably also a larger profit margin on these.
Liked and commented because you did not make a 4 minute video into a 15 minute one. 200USD to upgrade from 512MB to 1TB is inexpensive because that SSD's speed is 6000MB/s, the micro sd card can't do 100MB/s.
It's very odd, I put some games like Wasteland 3 (22GB) on my new Jetdrive, but it crashes trying to boot up, whereas it boots up fine on the internal SSD of course. Some other games I tried to put on the Jetdrive also crash on boot up. Only a few smaller games will run off my Jetdrive. How did you get these games working? Did you experience any crash with any game?
How to use a old JetDrive™ Lite Expansion Card ( I use with old Macbook Air ) to a new M1 /M2 Air or 13 inch Pro ? I found they did not have any card slot. Any Adapter card reader available so that I can use my old JetDrive™ Lite Expansion Card with new M* Air/ 13 Inch Pro ?

my experience with set up described in the video was TERRIBLE i think this video is quite misleading, so be careful assessing it. My personal conclusion after trying: this is a bad alternative to an internal hard drive. If you are low on budget just go with external hard drive - cheaper but much better experience / function. Solution suggested in the video - is slooooooow. Even for storing video files. Takes hours to copy your files. Don't worth trying and spending the money. Might work well for limited edge cases - but defiantly marketing this as an alternative way to increase you store is just a clickbait. I've tired: SanDisk 1TB Extreme microSDXC card, UHS-I, Class 10, U3, V30 + BASEQI UHS-II for 2021 M1 MacBook Pro 14 & 16" ... and it sucked.
$200 more for more than 100 times faster speed drive + reliability, yeah im gonna stick with the apple option you shouldnt be buying a $5000 laptop if you cant afford another $200-400 on an extra TB
You can do both! Also if you already purchased your MacBook and want more space, you’d have to buy a brand new one, some people just need an extra few GB.
The BaseQI 303A doesn't have the pins for UHS-II so any card you put in it will fallback to UHS-I. Compare christianliljeberg.se/wp-content/uploads/baseqi_back.jpg and the picture on the right of en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SD_card#UHS-II . BaseQI will release a different model with UHS-II in the future. The 303A was made for the old 2013+ MBP 13" retina models and although it works fine in a 2021+ 14" MBP it wasn't made for that model and made in a time when UHS-II was a brand new spec.
BaseQI just came out with the 420a and it supports UHS 2 and is made specifically for the 202- MacBook Pro.

With the 420a, I get about double the performance of what you tested with an UHS1. 100MB/s read and write
The reason the uhs II is slow might be because of the adapter bottlenecking it or the adapter not supporting uhs-II
