I run to animal rescues and music to keep my sanity. These kids are so fun.
Joe Walsh is one of those artists that, even before he sings, is instantly recognizable as soon as you hear his guitar. He is rock but always with a big dose of boogie/funk. His beautiful slow songs are also great, proving he's not a one trick pony. An amazing musician...and always a lot of FUN to listen to.
It’s called a talk box. It takes the sound from the instrument (in this case a guitar, but it can be used with keyboards, harps, Banjo’s etc) and sends the sound through a tube yo the mouth. The player then changes the shape of his mouth to modulate the sound that is then picked up by the microphone. He is not actually singing, the sound is produced by the instrument.
@@mikest.pierre8603 completely different effect. A wah pedal changes the input signal, while a talk box modifies the output They have a different sound and a different way of using the effect. A wah pedal is manipulated with the foot, while a talk box uses the mouth
Interesting trivia: Joe's band, James Gang, were touring with Led Zeppelin when they first came to America. Joe sold his 1959 Gibson Les Paul Custom guitar to Jimmy Page. That is the iconic guitar that Jimmy played for Led Zeppelin's entire career.
Story time: The very first time I ever went to Colorado (where part of the Rockies are), I was visiting over 4th of July weekend and my friends stepmum from Australia was also in for a visit. Stepmum had been a huge Joe Walsh fan her whole life and one of her dreams was to smoke a joint in the Rocky Mountains while listening to this song - so we did! LOL We truly couldn’t get much hiiiiiiiiiigher. ❤❤❤❤
Altitude does that lol... I used to get a giggle out of lower altitude family coming to visit and seeing how little alcohol (or whatever) it took for them to be completely wrecked.... Rocky Mountain High indeed (I live at 7000 feet which is middling for Colorado)
Love George Thoroghgood’s Bad to the Bone, I saw him open for John Fogerty (CCR) 2 weeks ago 8/30 at Thunder Valley. Sadly he doesn’t have it anymore. Even his signature song Bad to the Bone that he saved to finish his hour set was wasn’t good. Didn’t sound anything like the original. Audience was silent. It was sad 😞 John Fogerty hit it out of the park! Could have watched him all night.
In 2018 I saw The Eagles in concert at The Forum in Los Angeles. It was a great show but I was most impressed with Joe Walsh’s guitar playing. He has still got it.
I don't know about that. Listen to ZZTop Tres Amigos album they have some heavier riffs and George Thourogood and the Destroyers are very heavy as well. I grew up listening to many of these Blues bands in the 70's and some are wild.
James Gang was his first big group. James gang Live is UNBEIVABLE!!!!!!!! You're gonna need me and Lost Woman are unlike anything you'll ever hear guitar wise!!!!!
In 1973 my dad bought the 45rpm of Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way", . . . mistakenly. He wanted John Denver's "Rocky Mountain High". He then dropped " Rocky Mountain Way" into my (8F) stack of wax, . . . Marnie Nixon's "Mary Poppins" and Danny Kay's "Tubby the Tuba" were no longer heard in my world. The arm was open on Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way" (that means it played on repeat) until he got me an album of the greatest electric guitar solos. I think it was called "Heavy Hands", . . . original artists, . . . it was awesome.
Check out Joe's work in the Eagles' "Life in the Fast Lane". The main riff was something Joe was using to warm up. Glenn Frey, his band mate said "What was THAT?!? We need to us THAT in a SONG!!"
So happy you’re getting back to Joe! Next do “Funk #49” from him with the James Gang. Joe was in The James Gang and solo before and after the Eagles. All of the Eagles had solo projects.
James Gang "Walk Away" is my favorite of his tracks....all time. Seemed so ahead of it's time also.....was a very early 70's track....just seems about 10 years ahead of everything else at that time.
Joe Walsh a member of The Eagles was using a "VoxBox" which is a tube devise placed in your mouth that is connected to an electric guitar or a piano...it was the version of "auto-tunes" back in the 60's, before auto-tunes was created. The VoxBox takes an XLR input from your Mic, runs it through a studio-quality mic pre-amp, then it sends it out a buffered effects from where you plugged. It provides an old fashion 1930's radio effect or 1930's speaking mike effect...The Beatles were one of the Rock bands to use this effect in their songs to create to the listeners a throwback 1930's nostagia atmosphere. The Beatles used it in their song, "Strawberry Fields Forever" to create a psychedelic effect to the listeners ear. It suppose to make you high by the sound of it without getting high!!! lol Everything back in my day was about getting "high" lol..Great reaction!!!
Oh yeah...I definitely needed to hear me some of this...thank you MollyBoy for reacting to this song. Please do all of us a favor and react to The Confessor by Joe Walsh next...I promise you will not be sorry. Oh, and Joe's talk box segments sound like a guitar because he is playing the sound from his guitar into the tube that is in his mouth. LOL
This is one of my all time favorite songs! It just plain rocks. Joe is the coolest 😎 dude on the planet and an extremely accomplished guitarist! He has on HEAVY ROTATION throughout my high school years. (And I live in New Mexico, IN the Rocky Mountains.)❤❤❤❤❤
Joe Walsh was a star before he joined the Eagles, who had been around a while. Walsh joining the Eagles led their transition from country/folk to rock. Wow, i had forgotten how great this song was!
Joe Walsh was first heard as a member of The James Gang (1969-1971), then formed the group Barnstorm (1971-1975), joined the Eagles (1975--1980), then went back to doing solo albums after the Eagles broke up (1980-1992, 2012). He has rejoined the Eagles for their reunion tours (1994-1996, 1999, 2001, 2007). He has also appeared on the albums of various performers and groups over his entire career, which he continues to do presently. I recommend "Funk 49" and "Walk Away" from The James Gang. You've already listened to "Rocky Mountain Way" and "Life's Been Good" from his solo albums.
Peter Frampton did the guitar mouth tube in the 1970's also, the guitar sound is being "tubed" to the mouth and the change in shape of the mouth cavity changes the sound in to the vocal mic
The Bomber will blow you away with his 4 min guitar solo . Walk Away is another great song P.s. it's a voice box like you thought The tube in your mouth
I’m 63 and grew up with this era of music. I’ve been watching your reaction videos for a few days now. Love it! I’m writing because I CAN’T believe I forgot about this song! Thank you for what you do. For some reason it does my heart good to see all of my favorite band’s legacies exposed and carried on!

He goes running inside the house but forgets to shut off the lawn mower, which kept going until it ran into the neighbors garden-- causing some damage. 😬. He used to ride a Harley out there in the 70's. But his main house is near Hollywood, with a built in recording studio....😂
Four great songs 👍.....Joe Walsh is a genius with a sense of humour that often comes out in his music....check out his "The Confessor " album .....hard rocking with tongue in cheek humour.....with guitar that cuts like a hot knife through butter.
Great to see u back, feeling better! Missed your great analysis of many of the songs I grew up with. I've had the privilege to see led zep, pink flyod, aerosmith, the who,to name a few, back in the 70s and 80s.. I haven't slowed down that much in my 60s, as I've seen Usher,Jzee,Rhianna, and others. It is so good to Ser the younger generations get to experience how great the music was. Joe Walsh was a real force on guitar. Joe Walsh was in a group The James gang, then came the Eagles, then his solo stuff like this
The way a talkbox works is that you take a signal out of your guitar amplifier and you feed it into this little waterproof mic with a kind of short tube around it, and then you're standing in front of the microphone and singing, but you can either use your voice full to equally blend with the guitar sound coming from inside your mouth, or you can do nothing at all and let your mouth shape the sounds of the guitar solo coming through. You can whisper along to it, you can make growling animal noises and you can definitely try to mimic the guitar solo itself, and then you can also slip interesting words and phrases in there as well that blend back back into just the vocal sounds at the end of the phrase, and so forth. This is such a fun song, and it's a blast seeing you dig it so much.❤ But you are coordinating all that with playing a solo on your electric guitar at the same time. And really singing as well, and I do consider it both a singing solo and a guitar solo. But really it's a solo That shows mastery of the talk box.
Gday Moll, man this is the first song I heard from Joe in 1979 in old mates car on the way to the schutzenfest(German beer festival)cruising down the highway, sun shining, shades on,spliffing up,17 years old, loving life. There are just some songs in life that put you back in a moment and I've had a lot of those and probably so has everyone else.
So damn good! And you mentioned Cult of personality, but another 90s cut that I really absolutely loved was the song dosage by Collective Soul. Like Cult Of, it also features an absolutely blazing wah guitar solo. This is such a fantastic use of the talkbox, and his humor and lyrical and intense musicality just ring out. And the textual stuff where they put a filter on The Voice to cut everything down to the mid-range? The Beatles made that popular but then Pink Floyd started doing it and it was used here and there and really notable ways and ELO did it but you still hear it here and there, really over the next several decades.
When Joe Walsh joined the EAGLES he helped them go from smooth country sound that they had started with and move them to the rock side of music and make them the greatest American rock band ever!!! Check out Funk #49 when he was in the James Gang.
Joe Walsh is a deep dive. He was first heard with the James Gang in the late 60s. They were a 3 piece band out of northeast Ohio. After the James Gang, he formed Barnstorm then did some solo work. The Eagles came after that stretch. He continued to do solo work in between Eagles gigs. I'd suggest some James Gang. Others have mentioned Funk #49 but songs like The Bomber, Walk Away, Midnight Man, Bluebird (Buffalo Springfield cover), Take A Look Around are all excellent. From Barnstorm and solo work, I'd suggest Turn To Stone, Meadows, Welcome To The Club, Life Of Illusion, The Confessor, In The City (Eagles performed but it's Joes song), Analog Man. I've seen him in concert several times and he is outstanding. His guitar tone and his singing voice are unique. An all-time great artist.
Hey MB ~ The sound you hear in your left ear is a synthesizer. This song came out in '73 and is a favorite for us older rockers. Joe's style of playing is very unique, and you know instantly that it's him playing the guitar. Loving your reactions, mate. Keep up the great work.
