I had over 80 Hoyas at one point, about 10 years ago. All of them I grew from single cuttings. Then I moved to a house with very little natural light, and lost most of them. The hardier ones survived, and I eventually got plant lights…but consider the future with these plants. Most look great as young plants - but they do not age well. They get huge, and heavy, and just aren’t as pretty as when they are young. I have an obovata that is so heavy it breaks every hanging pot I’ve put it in. I’ve had to pot up every two years. I don’t think they make hanging pots big enough for the next one it will need. I’m going to have to put it in a floor pot and let it climb up a wall trellis. So, yeah, consider the future when getting that cute, pretty little hoya….someday you are going to need a huge greenhouse.

For your first Hoya that isn’t growing, it probably has microscopic mites! I had a plant that wasn’t doing anything for over a year, didn’t show any signs of pest damage, but wouldn’t grow… I treated it with sulfur and it immediately started growing again!

You said you haven't had them bloom as much. You mentioned you've had it really warm in there. My tip would be that they like to cool down at night. Hoya bloom when their a bit stressed out, so really letting them dry out between watering, always plenty of sun but they enjoy a temp drop at night.

Hello, I'm Colombian and live in Medellín. Many of those plants you have are native to this area. When you go for walks in the forests, you can come across different types of philodendrons, calatheas, pothos, or alocasias. I don't understand how you manage to take care of those plants in a place like where you live, where it seems that cold weather prevails.
By the way, you look like a star among all those plants.

Your first Hoya looks to be in much too large of a pot. The leaves will grow once the roots have filled out the pot. I put my new hoya cuttings in modified plastic shot glasses or 1” or less pots until I get at least one new leaf and then size up the pot very slightly. Hope this helps!

you have such an amazing Hoya collection thank you for sharing with us! i love the fun facts/ tips you add in along the way. i actually got into houseplants via Hoyas - i worked for a local plant influencer's online shop packing up plants; she would let me keep broken pieces to "rescue" lol + most of my planty rescues were Hoyas bc we sold a lot of them, so they are special to me! don't give up on your variegated Compactas, they are looking cute + healthy, they just seem to grow at a snail's pace

Fern, I'm also a hoya head and have had my ups and downs with some. Most of my hoya are grown on plant shelves and rotted under the cheap Amazon grow lights. I then bought the barrina grow lights on Amazon that so many people recommend and they are a life savior. My tall hoyas are under pendant lights and the bulb used are the Phillips grow light bought at Walmart. It's a heavy bulb but work really well.

Thank you for sharing. When I started growing hoyas, some were doing nothing for so long. And I knew little about their care and problems. It was recommended that I buy a microscope and search for flat mites. They are the #1 reason hoyas do not push new growth or lose peduncles. So, I treated them for flat mites (there are many options, including benefitials), and in no time, plants exploded with new leaves and looked so good. Plyneura, even with silver leaves, are pretty fast growers. Good luck!

Have you ever looked at your hoya under a magnifying glass? Hoya tend to suffer from flat mites which are invisible to the naked eye. They are known to stunt growth because they like chomping on new growth points. Might be worth looking into for the ones that don't seem to grow.

Hi Fern. WOW!!! What an amazing collection of Hoyas!!!! I have a Carnosa and Obivata. Both are very slow growers inside, but the moment I put them outside for a summer vacation, they took off. Fresh air and natural UV must be what they need. They were positioned in a North-East position (South-East Northern hemisphere) and sun stressed beautifully. I must compliment you on your top. Orange/red really suits you.😊🪴

I have the hoya kerrii albomarginata and I keep it successfully on a south-west windowsill, so it gets direct sun all afternoon, even now, during the summer. I noticed it likes the summer heat. I have it growing in a chunky mix and water it as soon as it dries out almost completely, which is every other day in summer. I did acclimate it to high light before putting it in the sunny windowsill.

Hoyas by far are my favorite plants so you can imagine how thrilled I was when I saw that your entire video was going to be on Hoyas. First, I must say that orange is your color. You look absolutely gorgeous in orange. Now back to the Hoyas. I love them so much. I also have a huge collection. I mostly have them outside in my covered patio year round being that I live in South Florida. I have Chicken Farm and Undulata on my wishlist. Your Chicken Farm is gorgeous. I’ve had two Linearis that I have killed after over aggressive treatment for mealies. Yours is so beautiful. I may give it another try in the future. Loved all your Hoya content in this video. I LOVE putting my hoyas outside for the summer!! As long as it's in dappled shade, it definitely prefers it out there (for me). Every time it rains, they seem to sprout a new leaf or two... Also, I don't have to deal with the drippy blooms indoors!

Edit: what I have discovered with my Hoyas - some of them grow better in my greenhouse (it is one of those clear plastic covered ones in a SW sliding door window in our kitchen which gets really warm)and then when they don’t grow well like the others, I move them to under my grow lights. I’ve had a few that started growing after switching them to different light locations.

I got a polyneura broget recently as a rehab and i put it in PON in a window, and spray it with orchid spray every other day. It has grown a LOT in a month! Honestly all my pon Hoya are exploding in regular room conditions :). If kept in soil mix, my hoya seem to grow quickly when watered far more often than you’d think to.
For obovata, i have had the best luck getting consistent leaf shape and growth when they’re in high humidity in leca or pon. In soil, i notice even slight watering inconsistencies make the leaves wonky.

At one time I had several hoyas but I moved and a few of them didn’t like the new location. I didn’t catch them in time and lost a few of them. I still have the linear and the chelsea. Seeing your collection, I’m ready to start again. Thanks so much for the video. Very impressive!

My Hoya kerrii verigated is growing in my greenhouse 59% shade cloth, in winter here in Sydney I need to wrap the greenhouse in plastic because the temp can get down to 0 degrees Celsius where it can experience cellular breakdown. Water when dry spring and summer three times a week and once a week in winter

🫶✨🪴such a lovely collection. 🤔okay…Obovata, my best guess to your wonky leaves is watering, I have noticed if I water too soon between waterings(overwater) wonky leaves form. 🤞hope that helps. Your Hoya collection is so sweet!! Thanks for sharing!

Ok, so crazy amount of Hoyas, lucky lady! 😵‍💫🤩have to agree that philodendron is my top tier but Hoya is definitely super close second! ❤I have a little harder time with mine so my collection is way smaller; spending the summer outside has def helped 🪴☀️I do love linnearis-how could you not (especially yours😍), but multiflora is my favorite!!🌸💕thanks Fern!🐶🐾be well!🌿

I am in love with the Obavato, compacta, Australis, and of course the queen! Right now I have a crimson queen and an young Australis that's just put out it's first new growth. I had a variegated compacta that got root rot and I'm trying to save as a cutting. I can't wait to get more Hoya and watch them grow, quickly became my favorite genius.

How hot is it outside for your area? How often do you water? I'm in north central Texas and this summer it's been too hot for most outdoor plant life. Our temps have been mostly 106 -110F/41.1-43.3C #brutal 🥵

Hi Fern 💫 I just received a Hoya Linearis I’ve been searching for one since the start of my Hoya journey. Mine is growing well, but I’m such a helicopter Mom because she’s definitely my favorite as well. Fingers crossed I can keep her happy. I did take a cutting and put it in Pon to try before I move the whole plant and kill it. I also got a cutting of Mathilde off Etsy and it came with a peduncle. I’ve never had a peduncle on any of mine so I’m super excited. I thoroughly enjoyed this video of all your Hoya. Enjoy the rest of your week. 🙏🏻💫

I would suggest moving your Polyneura broget to a significantly smaller pot. They (like most Hoya) tend to start growing faster in smaller pots because they wait until the roots fill out the pot to start vining. I grow a lot of mine in 2-3" pots

Don't give up on that two leaf polyneura ...mine was two leaves forever but has now taken off. I got a humidifier several months back and that helped a lot of my hoyas, which are my favorite plant. Your linearis is drop dead gorgeous and I will have to find your chop and prop video as I would like mine to be fuller. Also so happy your variegated heuschkeliana is growing so beautifully. Mine has not done much, but I am going to repot it in terra cotta do see if that gives it a boost. It has never been repotted so who knows? I need to go back to the beginning of the video to take notes on a planting medium you were talking about ...tree fern? I looked at the Planthaven Toronto site but didn't see anything that looked like it. Where did you get it? Great content! Would love to see a repotting video on the hoyas! Thank you

Yours is soooo gorgeous but mine just doesn't grow! 😂 Also, your tortem looks so cool in the video contrasting against your TV. Like a piece of planty art! Lol. I love linearis too. Still trying to figure that one out too. 🤷 Always love your content! 💚

Hey Fern I also had a polyneura that only had two leafs for a year and would sometimes put out a new one. I finally got it growing happy though. I changed the media to be a 70-30 mix of orchid bark and potting soil. Than started fertilizing with 20-20-20 200ppm Nitrogen. Hope it works out for you!!
