My favourite alocasias of all time:
    1) Alocasia platinum (bisma)
    2) Alocasia scalprum - just looove those spiky leaves
    3( Alocasia watsoniana

More love for Alocasia 'Frydek' here. I bought mine as a tiny two leaf plantlet. Fast forward a couple years, it is now three feet tall with a huge spread of many leaves. Even non-plant people really gravitate towards the emerald greens of this plant when they enter my apartment, glossing over the other large specimen plants in favor of this one.

So far, I have the best luck with alocasia's over all other "fancy plants". For the record I have very low light in my apartment, but have had great success with Alocasia. I do use some plant lights, but my set up has a lot to be desisred. Top Three: 3. Regal Shield (large and in charge, fast grower). Quite forgiving. 2.Frydek - it's absolutely stunning. I stare at it every day. The dark velvety leaves with the crisp white veining is so eye catching. 1. Alocasia Pink Dragon. It is the heartiest healthiest most prolific plant I have ever had. I absolutely adore it's waxy wrinkly leaves, bright pink stems, and all the little babies it pops out! It is always surprising me with flowers and how large and broad the leaves become.

I love my stingray, I got it half eaten to death by spider mites at a garden center and the moment I gave it a little bit of TLC it came back full force and now it's 3.5 feet tall. I got SO MANY corms out of him.

I think the Alocasia Scalprum would make a lovely addition to your goth plant room! It's so stunning and also hard to put in to words. It feels a bit like plastic, has gorgeous veins and is super dark with dark purple stems. I just can't stop looking at mine :)

So glad your top one was black velvet! That was my first alocasia, as its readily available here in Australia, and still my favourite. Frydek is a close second for me - I had a big boy but something happened to it :-( so I will need to get another. Stingray would be number 3. Had one but that died, too, so another I'll need to replace. I do struggle with alocasia... just think I haven't found the right spot for them.

I've only ever had two, but absolutely love Alocasia 'Frydek'. That Emerald green, soft velvety big leaf plant is just stunning.
Unfortunately, I lost my first one to the Perth heat. It just gets too hot for them to survive. The second one I lost to the worst spider mite infestation I've ever seen. Amazing how I had a deck full of "indoor" plants and that was the only one affected by the mites 🤷‍♀️

    My top 3:
    3) Portadora / Low Rider -- for the same reason as your #10, it was my first Alocasia and it went through so much shock and trauma while I learned to care for it that it almost died back to the corm! I learned a lot about caring for it, and went down the Alocasia rabbit hole from there. Mine is named Karl and he's doing very well now
    2) Alocasia Nebula or Dark Star -- can't decide betwen these two! Love the sharp lines and form of the Nebula, love the pop of red on the dark star.
    1) Alocasia Zebrina -- my most mature Alocasia, really a statement piece and such a wild looking plant

I'm late but I had to say, that video from 2019 is the reason I spent the last cpl years obsessively checking the internet for an attainable Loco, and I thank you for it!❣I finally got one from etsy in the early part of last year. He's had to have a buzz cut due to pest, but it's such an easygoing plant otherwise. It has already pushed out 2 leaves this month. It easily keeps 5-7 leaves at a time and grows quickly, this one was worth the wait and I'd have never known it exist if it weren't for you! I have yet to hear anyone else mention it or see it anywhere that I am not specifically searching for it.

I was so excited to see an Alocasia favourites video pop up. I love the variety of Alocasias, so much so that I now have increased my collection to 23 this year. It's really hard to pick a top 3, so I'm going to give my top 6 and a wishlist Alocasia.
    1) Alocasia Shattered Glass which has the most unusual flecked variegation on glossy green leaves.
    2) Alocasia Platinum because I'm a sucker for anything platinum, plus it's by far my easiest to care for and grows consistently.
    3) Alocasia macrrorhizos Plumbea has dark, dark leaves that in the light has a range of beautiful colours and veining. Also, the stems are an amazing plum colour that contrast with the leaves beautifully.
    4) Alocasia heterophylla Dragon's Breath again has silvery, platinum leaves in the most interesting shape.
    5) Alocasia Dragon Moon, which has rugged, silvery, shimmery leaves in the light. Just a stunning plant to look at.
    6) Alocasia Scalprum is another easy Alocasia. The leaves size up really quickly, have an interesting shape with lots f texture to them, and are a stunning, glossy green colour.
Wishlist Alocasia - Alocasia Golden Dragon. This one you have to see to understand my obsession with adding it to my collection. It's just breathtaking.
Thanks for another great video 👏👏💚

I picked up a Baby Azlanii in a store a while ago. It wasnt looking too good, so I repotted it and foun that it had 2 pups that already started sprouting, so I seperated them out and had them all grow seperately. The mother one was kind of greenish and looked like nothing special. The pups though came out with a really fuchsia magenta pinkish first leaf and i really liked them. I eventually sold the mother and one of the pups, the one i still have remaining is getting another leaf currently. I hope that the pinkish magenta fuchsia color will stick around because it DOES look nice. The green one looked a bit boring, like a faded Cuprea.

Azlanii for me in person was more special then in photo. It's actually dark green-brown most of the time , and like holo effect under the light reveals it's pinky nature. Quite an experience! I was squeaking and running circles under my chandelier at home when first saw it out of package.
And it's not really expensive for such tricks, which is always nice.
Dragons are both my good bois, growing and popping like no tommorow despite me being quite a neglectful plant parent, azlanii also doing well (considering, has it's basic 3 leaves for me, recently popped), but black velvet - it literraly hates me. They all grow at the same shelf together, same everything - but black velvet is always has 1 to 0 leaves!

It does shimmer in the sun. New leaves come in as a very bright spring green and darken as they harden off. It seems to grow really well, it's been in bloom almost the entire year I've had it, it's also propagating by itself. It's a really cool alien-looking alocasia, but no, it doesn't look like the pictures. They're 100% edited. Still lovely though, and very easy. 💚

I have a large Stingray and Pink Dragon (10€ each from Lidl!!!!). Both are much easier than my Frydek and Cuprea, both of which I've had to grow back from the stump. However, I find that the Stingray is an absolute spider mite magnet- much more so than my velvet philodendrons. It is sat next to my Melanochrysm, Gloriosum and Splendid and has been the only one to get infected with spider mites- 3 times this summer 😭😭😭😭. Apart from that, I find it a very easy plant, I have mine sat in strong direct morning sunlight (it gets direct sun for about 4 hrs a day) to keep it from getting leggy and it's now looking lovely at 3ft tall❤

I love alocasias. My first and dearest is Silver Dragon (super easy, very resilient and so beautiful), I had her since a tiny seedling. Then I added Ninja (Reginula´s hybrid) and Azlanii (a bulb - luckily it survived and got established). These 3 are my top 🙂
Azlanii has leaves as thin as a calathea, so is quite fragile, small and with unbelievable purple deep pinkish shine... it such a stunning colour, definetely something unusual and spectacular to see.
Ninja has very thick leaves and is very resilient - similar thickness to a. clarinervium, its 3D velvet leaves with the veins are irresistable :-) Ninja looks a little bit like a small anthurium.🥰
If I had the space, I´d love to get Frydek, Regal Shield, Pink Dragon, Cuprea, Jacklyn, Watsoniana, Maharani... and many more 🙂
I grow them all in Lechuza pon in my large north-facing window and the light is more than sufficient - they are short & fat and bloom.

I'm loving my sinuata right now and my Maharani but my favorite is still the good ol wentii, mine is massive. Like 5 ft tall with leaves as long as my arm (just about).
I'm just a sucker for any alocasia I think, infact I'm sure I have more of them than any other genus.

I got both a green and a silver dragon at the same time, both from the same plantstore. The silver dragon was thriving, but the green was was being an absolute diva and seemed like it was going to die on me. When i visited the plant store again i saw another green dragon and got it. That one also didnt really like being here. They both survivred, dont get me wrong, but they both first seemed to be on the verge of dying before they eventually got better. Now they're just sort of... "existing". Silver is still thriving, though. So from personal experience I would say the silver is easier than the green.

My FAVORITE alocasia I think is Alocasia Princeps 'Purple Cloak', super inky black/purple leaves kind of the same color as the philodendon majesty, really sharp arrowhead leaves. Next is the cuprea, really alien looking and interesting and they get massive huge leaves that kind of freak me out. Last is frydek I love the dark green velvet leaves.

I only have two Alocasia and they are both babies. I have a Stingray and a Silver Dragon. I may get one more, but don't know which one (it won't be the Jacklyn though). Maybe the pink dragon, melo or the black velvet. Although I have not had much luck with the black velvet in the past.

I love alocasias. It doesn't matter how difficult they might be, I love them.
I made the experience this year that they don't like being shipped, quite a few didn't make it to my place. Too bad.
For the dragon scale vs silver dragon, in my experience, silver dragon is toughest.
It's one of the first plants I bought, it survived me having no experience at all, it survived two months with 12°C inside my flat (The heating was down in the whole building and it took a very long while for the landlords to fix that), it survived changing place and light exposure, ... It's blooming again right now and giving me a new leaf.
My green dragon didn't survive our very dark and fresh August. It gave up on life very quickly, there was nothing I could do against it (before that it was growing like crazy, giving me beautiful leaves and even flowers)
But then within a week, it was over. I was very sad.

"Brindle" is how I would describe the pattern on the Zebrina reticulata. Reticulata, by itself, means "netted" but I think a lot of people are familiar with brindle dogs, and although it's supposed to be taupe brown, using that word would help them envision what the streaky pattern looks like.

    My top 3:
    1. Both Micholitziana variegated and normal. I have been mesmerized by this plant since I got into house plants and I need the variegated one in my life. I'm growing the normal from a baby because I feel like it's rewarding when it gets bigger that I grew it and nurtured it from a baby but also because I won't drop 3 figures on a plant, i got kids. lol
    2. Dragon Scale/Silver Dragon I will have both of these in a couple weeks and i'm so excited. I actually saved my Silver dragon from a death plug in a Wilco and i just about died when i saw it.
    3. Nebula Its new cause i saw this video and it just looks BEAUTIFUL 😍

My first Alocasia was a Black Velvet 2 years ago and it's currently giving out its 7th leaf... I'm eyeing the oldest leaf with suspicion, I have a feeling it will go, even though it still looks healthy. But I'm ok with that, it's big and beautiful. I recently bought an Alocasia Tiny Dancer... it's so different to all the others I'm really curious to see how it gets on. I don't have a lot of space, so I can't get big leaved plants, so I've stopped at the little ones.

The dragon scale is my favorite alocasia! The coloring, the detailed thick leaves, it just looks otherworldly to me. And when the new leaves come in, I love how vibrant they are.
I'm still trying to figure out what types I enjoy growing aside from the dragon scale, because I have a few and they're sort of giving me a hard time. They like to drop a lot of leaves until they acclimate and grow new ones. I just got a maharani and am loving it, but we'll see if it decides to hate me.

At least here in the U.S., the silver dragon seems more common than the dragon scale. My husband recently just got me a a silver dragon from Costco (I don't know if you have Costco in the UK, it's a super market but everything is in bulk by default. As for a good word to describe the pattern of zebrina reticulata... spiderweb-y? Hope that gives you ideas :)
I haven't owned enough alocasia to have a definite fav list, but I miss my black velvet that died and would absolutely have another. Beyond that, Frydek (doesn't have to be variegated) and Cuprea have been at the top of my wish list for a long time--though dragon's breath might be a runner-up.
I hope you are enjoying your vacation, and happy birthday!🎂
