It sounds like someone needs to challenge that added warranty clause that isn't in writing. Things have to be fit for purpose for a reasonable time or documented within the warranty clauses surely? I suspect it will end up being documented with the bad publicity they have had with this video but it should also show an ammendments date and if you bought it before that date then it still would be worth challenging it for that kind of money.

When my SolarEdge energy bank was installed, the commissioning attempt by the electrician managed to brick the comms module in the inverter during a power cycle. According to Solaredge the comms module would “blow up” if the inverter was isolated at the external ac isolator without turning off the inverter first. Apparently the 400V capacitors would discharging into the electronics and “blow them up”.
They said “normally it wouldn’t be covered under warranty” if the electrician (approved by Solaredge) made a mistake. They were talking utter nonsense. The bricked comms module showed no sign of overvoltage damage. My own reckoning is that likely cause was corrupted software - potentially perfectly fixable with the right software on a usb stick and the right know how.
Overall I think SolarEdge customer support is awful. Technical knowledgeability seems to be “finger in the air, seat of their pants” and the result is situation that your’re in. They’re killing their reputation. A shame considering the hardware is excellent.
Since I got the new comms module, I replaced it myself. It was 2022 and I wasn’t willing to wait months for my electrician to come round. I UA-camd the whole process including firmware updates. Success, and the battery has been fine ever since.

Yeesh my gut always told me that solaredge was junk despite the cacophony of youtubers pimping it - which is why I went my own design victron/Pylon - thanks for confirming it - a BMS that doesn't have a low cutoff point shouldnt exist how can that even be safety certified? I've "brute-force tested" the high cutoff and the low cutoff on my system to make sure everything is safe and both worked a treat. You know I wonder if the solaredge even has a proper BMS it almost sounds like it just has an active balancer. Cory - Someone needs to test if the high cutoff actually works as that's what causes fires.

Whilst I usually don't advocate legal action simply cause even in a slam dunk case it's long, complex, and expensive.... sadly this means corps do get away with it.
However, in this case your £6k down, how many other sparks are now in the same boat? Maybe you could look at using contacts to collectively address (ie spread the cost) this as if it's not in their legal T&Cs, or purposely hidden away, then it's unenforceable within the remit of an unfair contract and they can't be allowed to screw over every spark in the UK simply because of that.
A well worded solicitor letter may be all that's required.

You would have the same problem with any battery if the consumption exceeds the capacity of the battery and solar generation!! It doesn't "brick" the battery with other brands.
There is lots SE can do to prevent this the battery from locking out and causing an UVP ( under voltage protection) error from happening... its absolutely not your fault. I'm glad you got it sorted and SE came to their senses.

Just a note about MC4 connectors, there was a fire on a solar installation in Sandnes, Norway last year (2023) and I heard that the fault that caused it was trapped moisture in an MC4 connector. So plugging MC4 in the rain is just a big NO NO for me... 🔥

Good to see you Helgi! Thanks for the info! My father in law sent me that article when it happened! Looked crazy. The optimisers in this video have small plugs on, and are only removed generally just before mating, also if galvanic corrosion was to occur, and that led to a poor connection, solar edge optimiser will shut down the panel, safely dropping the voltage to 1 volt. So I sleep a lot easier 😁👍🏼

Hi Cory. I think you would have a good case to challenge the legality of their refusal to warrantee it. It does have to be fit for purpose and that seems to be a bit of a glaring error on their part. Unless it clearly states that this is not a supported configuration (ie with out solar) then that seems pretty useless.
What happens if it runs out when it’s not charging from solar? Or you have a major outage at night and then have a very overcast day and cannot charge it.
Why don’t you reach out to the black belt barrister on UA-cam for a collaboration. He’s a great guy that helps people understand law so this could be a good video for both channels.
    Best of luck.

If it's not mentioned in the T&Cs anywhere, unless you're doing something obviously incorrect/incompetent (which definitely sounds like you weren't), I doubt it would have stood up if you had ever ended up taking it to court! I've had no issues with it at all or the phone software, does everything I need and its fairly intuitive. Easy for the user to set battery discharge levels or type of use from home priority to export priority.

@@corymac SolarEdge tech support are the most awful people to deal with.
The amount of systems we've had with comms failures and we go round in a loop that goes something along the lines of
      us: "our system is broken"
      them "no it isn't"
"yes it is, look at all these symptoms, they follow the same pattern we've had before on other systems"
      "it can't be broken"

"oh OK, we'll send you a replacement card"
"and who's going to pay to fit that?"
      "you are"
"right, now the last five times you sent us that card it didn't fix the problem and we had to fit a new inverter, can't you just send us a new inverter?"
"no, the card will definitely fix it"
There's now a 50/50 of "we've fitted the card and still have exactly the same problem" or "we've fitted the card and the inverter has rejected it, we still have the problem" "please send us a new inverter because that's the only way this has ever been fixed in our experience"
Sometimes they send the right part out. That's around about a 6-12 month period.
If you install the inverters outside then after a couple of years you'll find the screws have corroded in place - not a problem with most brands as you don't need to take the cover off. Very big problem on SE because that's how you access the controls. So you have to drill them out and Helicoil them. It's bonkers.

Regardless of the charging source, the battery should have over discharge protection built in as a first line. There must be something very unusual going on to make them release a product with such a design shortcoming. As for not being very explicit about it up front, that only compounds the issue. That was very dangerous. The unicycles own controller had already that protection but with a small difference. It wouldn't just instantly turn off trying to kill you but rather started beeping and leaning back more and more until you were forced to stop so I just disabled the whole BMS. I'm still using it and have replaced the cells once. It's been trough rain, snow, mud, ice, sand and everything between, including over ankle deep floodwaters and still works perfectly.

Yeah you're right there should be a safety threshold, it should cut off and then reenable charge as soon as it can. If they didn't implement that in the BMS or maybe they did it intentionally in a way that requires a third-party equalizing charge. And there's nothing to say that can't happen with Solar either. You could have a few cloudy days in a row and it could discharge not attached the grid/ or generator.
If you're gonna be eating the price anyway since the warranty won't cover it you might as well keep it. As long as the cells aren't too terribly discharged they're probably just under the BMS threshold. So depending on the pack configuration and how easy it is to disassemble, you could theoretically get in there with an alternative charging method lab power supply etc. And it would be safe as long as they're not completely discharged and don't sit that way for long.

at night it has massive pumps for lake water to be hilled up into it cheap using wind turbine farm and solar farms electric nearby (even up north near the canada border almost) and then drains it back down through the huge power turbines to make power cheaper.. profit.

@@corymac yes I mean if the designers have made one great big schoolboy design error of not having LVD with individual cell monitoring which is super simple to implement them I'm sure they won't be any other electrical or software errors lurking to raise their heads at some random time in the future.
3 things in the DIY lipo world everyone has learned, always do cell monitoring not pack, always have a cell level LVD to save bricking a cell which if you don't have cell monitoring you could accidentally try to recharge which always ends in fun, and always have cell level HVD because if you don't, more fun.
      And of course cell balancing.
Thing is the r&d on that is all done, mostly by trial and error over the last 10 years in the amature domain so costs nothing to implement as the far East battery company's have already 'taken' that knowledge and now sell ready to fit bms systems for less than 100 quid for 200a drain, the most advanced by jk

Massive shout-out to the designers and specifiers of shed and garage roofs, who decades ago incorporated factors of safety for roof timbers in anticipation that one day an additional deadload of unknown description amounting to 500-600kg would be imposed on their constructions. Do you get structural engineers' reports for these kinds of jobs? Maybe you do.
Fall prevention is still required for work on this kind of roof and a manual handling risk assessment for bags of ballast is probably unlikely to suggest the method you employed.
Well done, though, for taking SolarEdge to task over their invisible warranty terms re the battery. Damage to reputation in this market is worth way more than £6k so that penny must've dropped.
