Its so good to see confident young professionals (you Cory) in the system who push the boundaries to do their best work. So well deserved Cory and good luck in your new location and wedding 👌
Great episode Cory. Good for you, doing what you want, when you want, where you want. Bournemouth will have loads of houses in need of bringing up to a more modern spec, and older customers that are wary of kitchen fitter sparks. Once the word goes out how meticulous and honest your work is, you’ll have a full diary in a few months. All the best, Ian
I love that magic trick when you tapped the fuse out!n😅😂. Stupidly of UK installations without mandatory isolation switches makes electricians resort to magic tricks 😢
from that camera angle it certainly looks like its not connected. there only using a 2 way wago connector one cable from the swa and one cable from the charger.
No, it doesn't look like it is connected, but it would depend on the PEN fault arrangement as having the armour of the cable earthed at both ends would potentially bypass it.
Congrats on the move Cory, you'll be fine ! Just had a thought, I hope Ted finds his feet, he looked up to you and you gave him his start. He was probably gutted when you moved on. Great little apprentice.
3:17 its amazing , all the elctrical switchgear crammed in that tiny space filled with rubbish and household utilities. Were are the 80cm mandatory clearence between frontline and the opposite wall? How you can do a proper job in that space?
Cory its absolutely awesome to see a fellow trademan taking so much pride in the work they undertake! There will always be people who think they are capable of doing a job in all trades, these people are truly dangerous! So to all those that are looking for trademen and women please get references and don't always go for the cheapest quote.
Looks to me like that terminal was left completely undone. That’s one thing that frightens me, I check everything 3-4 times and even then it bothers me that I might have forgotten one.
I pull on every single wire after triple-checking all the screws. That way you can spot wires that slipped behind the terminals, I've had that happen with some brands of MCBs. You can tighten the screw all you want, the wire will still be loose. Many years ago I briefly checked a mate's 1970s electrics in Prague and found a wire in one of the MCBs that was completely loose, clearly the screw had never been tightened. Fortunately it was on the least dangerous circuit, there was (no kidding) a dedicated 10A circuit for the bathroom extractor fan and it was this wire that hadn't been connected properly. All the other connections were reasonably tight, even though the lighting circuits were partly 2.5 mm2 aluminium.
Given the increased loading being seen on domestic properties, due to the installation of EV chargers, solar and heat pumps etc, it is likely that burnout connections will become more common place. Working in industrial, it is already a fairly common fault to find as the higher currents tend to expose them better.
The annoying thing about this kind of work is that they get away with it time and time again without being held accountable. It's the British way to let them carry on and just pay someone else to rectify it.
Many people no longer take the time to check their installation properly and that's what annoys me the most in this job. Our profession is one of the most dangerous in the world and can have immense repercussions on the lives of many people. Fire, electrocution,... so many things that can be easily avoided just by testing properly. All this just to save more time, money by playing with customers' lives. They make me hate my work 🤮
We're moving into a place that had a fire in the kitchen, this was after we had put an offer in and the previous owner had it all "sorted" via her insurer, new kitchen, full repaint and new carpets throughout. Now imagine my surprise when it turns out that the kitchen circuit (just a 20A radial for everything including an electric oven) trips the RCD. Taking the cover off the distribution board shows a fair bit of smoke residue on everything, and really is something that should have been replaced as a just in case. Turns out there is a fault between the cable that comes from the distro to the kitchen and the sparky we got in cannot fathom where all the cabling is going (for example if you power up the circuit from the one side that will not trip the RCD you get the sockets that side plus the utility room working but not the cooker hood that's on that side). Ended up with the old feed from the distro being ignored and it being wired as 3 16A radials, left, right + utility and oven. There was also a mess of round junction boxes behind the oven unit and the kitchen sockets have been fitted fairly ham-fistedly, with filler/silicone used to fill the gaps between the socket and the tiles. Also interesting is that the utility room had sockets for a washing machine/tumble dryer yet it has a shower, that got replaced with a couple of switched/fused spurs. Also interesting is despite it being a radial there are two sets of 2.5mm feeding the outlets in the utility, though it's unknown what the other one is for as there is nothing else we can see that it feeds.
Bad place to pause 🤣. Respect the move man its something ive considered for a while. Definitely will be far happier as a result im sure + contracts on the wedding!
Hey Cory, welcome to the south coast. Your do well in the area as your work is 1st class. Hope you invited Jordan etc to the wedding evening lol. Good luck for the day and the new adventure. Good surf around too when windy.
Great VId. Looks like they might have put the neutral on the wrong side of the cable clamp, common enough especially with busbars, but your right 7Kw constantly will burn out the weak joint in weeks or months for sure.
I'm a gas engineer for a large company (British Gas). The number of emergency call outs I get regarding cowboys in the trade is horrifying. I attended a job one time where a bloke had not bothered to secure the boiler to the wall. He had simply covered the back with grip fill and pushed it against the wall. When I got there it had begun to peel of the wall and the main gas line leading to the boiler and almost pulled out causing a nasty leak. The boilers are supplied with a mounting kit which my 6 year old could install.
I think they have large circuit boards in Europe as they use radials which are 16amp at the breaker because a lot of their plugs have no fuses as we do in the UK.... I may be wrong, i'm a joiner, but that is how i understand it. I go to sweden and they sometimed tell me not to put the toaster and kettle into sockets next to each other, or not turn them both on at the same time 😮 otherwise it trips the breaker..... No such issues in the UK.
We moved from Bucks to Dorset last year and we are loving being walking distance to the sea. We are renovating and extending a property that currently still has its original wire fuse board from 1970, as you would expect we have found some very poor additions over the decades. We will be going for a full rewire, adding Loxone and hopefully solar and battery.
nice move cory! 😊 you'll look back in a few months and it'll be like... god! i had such a quiet landing here, now im like busy beyond heck! 😊 thats bril! now off to the surf!! 😂😂😂
That's bad work. I'm no expert electrician, but..... through the years, I've done electrical work on people's houses and never nearly set fire to someone's house through bad workmanship. I even got a bollocking for doing some electrical work on my flat even though the company that took the storage heaters out said the job was done better and tidier than their own electritions, lol. 😅😅. Well done, Cory saved the day.
Hey Corey! I’m just down the road in Southampton! So if you need a work contact get in touch! Fellow spark here, albeit boring domestic construction 🤩 you won’t regret being by the sea! Life is great
I like that we have nationwide wholesalers in Finland, like Sonepar, Onninen, Rexel and Ahlsell. So if I'm working 300km from home I can just go to a local Onninen and pick up stuff I need and at the same price as my local shop since it is one big supplier
Reckon you're doing the right thing Cory. When you're building a life together it's easy to focus on "sensible" career moves but in my view lifestyle is everything. We recently moved so we could be by the sea. I'm about twice your age and I wish I'd done this a loooong time ago.

Fantastic video, great stuff. It’s bad enough bodgers installing EV chargers as DIY, but when it’s a professional job a customer has paid good money for, that’s a magnitude worse.
A lot of people don’t understand when working on 10mm cable size or above it has to be moved around and then torqued down I always find main isolators and meters are fitted by people that don’t really understand the industry or the material they are working with😮

From the video Cory mentioned the customer didn't cheap out on the install, so you hope you would get good quality workmanship in return... Isn't the SWA earth not connected at 7:00? I mean there is a ring connector and a bit of green/yellow wire but is the other end connected anywhere?
