Jimmy's family immigrated to Australia from Scotland when he was young, his father would beat him and his siblings and was a drunkard, his mother was abused by the father well.
A very abusive household, no food etc.
Jimmy use to run and hide and go to a neighbours home.
He did a tour a few years ago and told his story of his life, he wrote a book as well.
I'm so pleased your enjoying our Jimmy.
    Thanks Texas Love.

Jimmy's an absolute legend in Australia and New Zealand. For some insane reason, US record executives didn't get him or his band Cold Chisel at all. He's 66 now and still releasing amazing music.

Wow, Goosebumps! Thanks for sharing this, it’s new to me. 😍 Yeah, you’ve nailed it. There’s something in the rawness and power of Jimmy’s voice that connects with one’s soul. #Edit- Oh yeah, regarding the pain in his voice that you’ve so intuitively picked up on, in his books Jimmy states that when he started singing, he wanted to sing as loud as a banshee to scream all his pain out. He wanted to sing so loudly that he pissed all the adults off, lol. He wanted to sing louder than anybody ever has before. Lol and he pretty much does. In a recent interview, a female reporter asked him to sing a few bars and when he did, he was so loud that she almost jumped out of her skin, haha. He said laughingly, “oh yeah, sorry I should have warned you about that.”
He has nineteen #1 albums, more than The Beatles, and he has sold more records in Australia than any other local artist. He’s irrefutably in a league of his own.
He’s also an award winning author with his three autobiographies (so far)- “Working Class Boy”, “Working Class Man”, and “Killing Time” plus two children’s books he wrote for his grandkids and with his gorgeous wife, Jane, a cookbook. I’d send you my books but their hard covers and the cost of postage to the big US of A is prohibitive. I’ve checked for you though and there are ebook versions available. 😃
He also has a Facebook page you can check out and I think Twitter. During Covid lockdowns, he and his family sang songs for us all to keep our spirits up ⬅️ he’s a bloody legend!

I saw Jimmy live in concert this year, his voice just got better with age, like a fine wine. I think what changed over the years is he got sober, faced his demons and reflected a lot - and that shows through in every performance. He does a cover of Chandelier (by SIA) where he was actually filling in for her- I initially didn’t like it, but as I’ve learned more about the song’s meaning and read that Jimmy fought back tears the whole performance, it’s become one of my favourites.

Jimmy and John are both Aussie legends. We are lucky in Australia that we have so many great artist, I was told by my guitar teacher once that it’s because we are so far away that many acts wouldn’t travel so far so we had to produce our own (don’t no if he was just bull shitting me). Other great Aussie artists include AC/DC, Olivia newton john, INXS, men at work (love we come from a land Down under), midnight oil,the divinyls, icehouse, Australian crawl, diesel, the angles, savage garden, crowded house, sia, guy Sebastian, Matt Corby, Tina arena, Kylie Minogue, Keith urban, troye Sivan, Amy shark, tones and I, the kid laroi, and silverchair (love silverchair, who formed when they were 13 and within 1-2yrs wrote hit songs pure massacre and tomorrow, can you imagine writing hit songs at 13-14yrs of age). I’ve probably left heaps off 🎉
Plus I just listened to the last two albums from five seconds of summer with my daughter and they were great especially now that they are playing more rock. They are Another band that formed as kids but are still together 10yrs later.

Jimmy live is something special.... actually, both Jimmy and John Farnham are singers who are almost always better live than on albums - in front of an audience both just seem to rise above and beyond to another level. It's why you'll usually see recommendation for them suggesting you check out the live versions.

Wow didn't know he did a cover of this old song! I dot it in choir practice. Yes Jimmy lived in Elizabeth South Australia, when the family moved from Scotland. It was a rough town and he grew up in a very dysfunctional family environment

A cold chisel concert we all sober when it started and we were blind drunk when we left with big smiles including the band when it was finished.
And what I liked about this band is that they shared the love with even the smaller country towns.
    Just a wild fantastic night

Hey Texas, loving the journey I see you're on fella. I've been a Barnes/Cold Chisel fan since the early 80s and now at 63 I still love hearing his distinctive voice, no matter what genre he's working in. Can I suggest tracking down the Swingshift album, it's fucking brilliant. I lost my vinyl album somewhere, wore out two cassettes but my CD is still ticking along.

Jimmy and Cold Chisel went to the states back in the day and were snubbed by the music industry over there as they didn’t fit the mold. They came home and released You got Nothin I Want giving the finger to the American music scene and never went back. And the rest is history. If you get a chance react to You Got Nothin I Want! It’s a blast 😂😂😂

Jimmy is one of the most emotional singers ever. He leaves nothing behind. Same with John Farnham ....you can see them reflecting their lives through the lyrics they sing.
Jimmy certainly had a rough life from abuse as a child, to trying to drown his demons through alcohol and drugs even a suicide attempt. It took him writing his story to finally come to terms with everything and the support of his wife and family to finally get hos life on track. And we are all so glad he did.❤️
