I've been raw twice. Lost 15lbs in six weeks each time. Also lost muscle, gained incredible tooth pain from lack of phosphorus, lost joint integrity from lack of protein. But I did get thinner. People are different. So these arguments are meaningless and only designed to divide.
Are oat groats edible if you just soak them overnight? I don't like cooking my oats because I don't like mushy oats. I find that I like my rolled oats with only 5 minutes of soaking, 5 grain cereal (oats, rye, barley, wheat, triticale) requires a half hour of soaking, steel cut oats take overnight. I'm guessing oat groats would require cooking. I might try them anyway, but I'll cook them the night before in the microwave in the same bowl I eat them in.

I'm also guessing that bring them to a boil in a pyrex bowl, then removing from the heat and left to sit coverd overnight might not work. That's what I was hoping for. @@jakubchrobry3701 If you only soak the oat groats overnight they'll still be pretty hard in the morning, sort of like sunflower seeds. It's better to cook them for 20 minutes. They won't be mushy, they keep their shape after being cooked and are much harder in texture than brown rice or barley.

So Dr. Gardener completely confused me. I’ve been watching Esselstyn and love his videos. Dr. Gardener who is Plant based said that Esselstyn’s diet increases your triglycerides and lowers your HDL. What’s the difference between plant-based diet Gardner is eating and the plant based diet is eating ? Gardner said the Esselstyn diet is high in legumes, nuts and seeds so is Dr Gardner not eating nuts and seeds? I wish he would’ve explained the difference. I rewatch that section several times but couldn’t get a straight answer. So confused right now.
Having watched both Esselstyn and Gardner, it seems Esselstyn is far more concerned about added fats when it comes to heart disease, even in the form of nuts, seeds and avocado. Added oils are out! Gardner, like the folks at ZOE believe added unsaturated fats, especially extra-virgin olive oil, nuts, seeds and avocado, and even cultured dairy products are actually good for you and anti-inflammatory. This is a huge contradiction with the plant-based doctors, and can be extremely confusing, as you say. It may be difficult, but we have to ultimately find the diet that is right for us through our own trial and error, and examining our beliefs about what is really good or not good for our bodies.

Without the patient doing their own blood test and seeing the effects of their diet people just aren't going to change unless they are informed otherwise. When doctors can issue a kit to do so and get instructions doing the test most people will just be confused from all the information out here. My guess is there are doctors and food corporations that don't want this.
The big takeaway. When doing a documentary, don't grow a beard and keep your hair the same. Otherwise, eat healthfully all the time and everyday except when you fast!
What changed my diet 15 years ago was Gary Taubes’s sentence that cultures that eat their traditional diets don’t get our diseases until they import sugar, flour, and seed oills.
Start very slowly (even just a teaspoon) and very gradually build up. Keep the focus on low FODMAP choices of whole grains and legumes and in very small quantity. Add meats or dairy if well tolerated, and as needed, until your gut can handle the plants. The gut has to get properly adapted. And give yourself permission to be flexible … plant-based with some added meat, fish, foul, or dairy, if you feel your body needs it.
Apparently, as he says, apologizing is not high on Mr. Gardner's list, at least not he does not refer to Essylsten, Pritikin, and Ornish, as the "Nazi-mafia" as he did in his America's Protien Obsession video from February 20th 2017 at the 1:43:00 mark. As far as I am aware he has not apologized for that slander. Now he agrees with the my plate, and looks to the protein section which to Gardner means meat, fish and dairy? Isn't that curious when he clearly explains in his America's Protien Obsession video that anyone can get all their protien from plants. Yes, exactly, "It depends". Research has shown that vegans have a lower BMD than omnivores and it is unfortunate that male scientists, who will most likely never be at risk of ostoporosis, forget to mention that and caution against it. And lets not forget that much of the research available to date was predominantly done on males. If there is a documented way to go vegan and consistently manage to absorb the required calcium intake while offsetting the negative effect of oxalates, then I would love to hear about it. But until that happens, I don't see the point of having the biological age of a teenager if I am setting myself up to die of a hip fracture. As for plants not having a dietary intake limit, researchers studying nut intake and kidney stones would beg to differ... Finally, I really respect Prof. Gardner's work and I think that it really unfortunate that his well-intended study turned out to be a means for Netflix to advertise businesses that make ultra-processed food that just happens to be vegan. I would love to hear his opinion of the final cut of the documentary and the message it transmits to viewers.
LOVE your podcast BUT I don't believe either extreme (Vegan or Carnivore) is the optimal diet. I am 75 years and I eat "mostly" plant based but I do eat red meat, fish, eggs and cheese. I've maintained a 19.5 BMI my entire life. Last time I was at a doctor's office was in 1969. I've only had one prescription in my adult life (antibiotic for root canal). Henry Kissinger lived to 100 eating bratwurst ((sausage) and wiener schitzel (fried meat patty).
Most people don't need to follow any special diet. If you really pay attention to your body, it WILL tell you something you are eating is not a good idea. For exemplee, if you nearly always have digestive issues after a specific kind of meal, then break it down and try each components alone to figure out the culprit and remove it. Taking on weight? Look at the calories and carbs, then cut one food for a week and se if there is any positive change. If not, take it again and remove another. That's it. Over time, you will create your own super diet.
That sounds like a marvellous idea but unfortunately the negative effects of certain foods can take years to appear, such as heart problems. You can feel great at the time but the issues appear over a large span of time.
Your digestive system is not the digestive system of a sheep, cow or horse. Homo Habilis, Homo Erectus and homo Sapiens left plants for meat around 2.5 million years ago. Over consumption plants causes arthritis, migraines and a reduction in overall health that is measurable!!! Granted, eliminating the processed foods will absolutely result in better health, but plants do plant things and animals do animal things. Your very short digestive system cannot absorb the beneficial nutrients from. Additionally, you do not have the bacteria in your digestive tract to convert cellulose to fat like the gorillas or any of our great ape ancestors.

I’ve been watching and reading so much about food over the last few months I’m completely confused now. I’m trying keto to help with mental health issues thanks to Chris Palmer but now my LDL levels have gone up to 5.5 (212.7) and according to some doctors that’s awfully high, others say it’s expected. I just don’t know who to believe or what to think now. Plus I’m in menopause so I think my LDL goes up because of that. And now I’m reading that old people are protected with higher LDL levels!! OMG 😱

Too much protein harms the kidneys, causes cancer. Too much sugar harms the arteries. But non-saturated fat, eat all you want? It can't be true. There's a glycemic index for carbs but there should be a lipid index for fats cause too much can't be healthy.

They told us at our last Vegan Cult monthly meeting to NOT let people know how MOST diseases can be reversed, prevented, or arrested on a whole plant foods diet, eating foods grown from the ground, minimally cooked or eaten raw. We messed up telling others about the power of plants.
The high degree of conformation bias here is nauseating. The omission of certain metabolic science, past and present, is egregious. Stating “we should not eat like our ancestors” without evidence as to why, is at best, misleading. “Healthy unsaturated fats”? Have they not read the RCT studies that show that unsaturated fat leads to higher all-cause mortality compared with saturated fats? People should set aside their Balanced Diet biases long enough to seek out evidence-based truths about our metabolism that may challenge their dietary beliefs. This balanced diet approach to a dietary lifestyle continues to confound our ability to be healthy. This is the same message that’s been drilled into our heads for decades, while chronic disease has been skyrocketing around the world.
The Netflix film is so biased, I could barely watch til the end. It didn’t really prove anything. It’s not about Omnivore versus Vegan ....it’s simply about eating only unprocessed whole foods.

Cook oat groats in a zorjirushi rice cooker on the brown rice setting. Texture is chewy like brown rice.

I believe I will end up there. Predominantly plants with occasional fresh eggs that I raise from my wonderful hens.
Most people don't need to follow any special diet.
If you really pay attention to your body, it WILL tell you something you are eating is not a good idea.
For exemplee, if you nearly always have digestive issues after a specific kind of meal, then break it down and try each components alone to figure out the culprit and remove it.
Taking on weight? Look at the calories and carbs, then cut one food for a week and se if there is any positive change. If not, take it again and remove another.
That's it. Over time, you will create your own super diet.
That sounds like a marvellous idea but unfortunately the negative effects of certain foods can take years to appear, such as heart problems. You can feel great at the time but the issues appear over a large span of time.

Your digestive system is not the digestive system of a sheep, cow or horse. Homo Habilis, Homo Erectus and homo Sapiens left plants for meat around 2.5 million years ago. Over consumption plants causes arthritis, migraines and a reduction in overall health that is measurable!!! Granted, eliminating the processed foods will absolutely result in better health, but plants do plant things and animals do animal things. Your very short digestive system cannot absorb the beneficial nutrients from. Additionally, you do not have the bacteria in your digestive tract to convert cellulose to fat like the gorillas or any of our great ape ancestors.

I’ve been watching and reading so much about food over the last few months I’m completely confused now. I’m trying keto to help with mental health issues thanks to Chris Palmer but now my LDL levels have gone up to 5.5 (212.7) and according to some doctors that’s awfully high, others say it’s expected. I just don’t know who to believe or what to think now.
Plus I’m in menopause so I think my LDL goes up because of that. And now I’m reading that old people are protected with higher LDL levels!! OMG 😱

Too much protein harms the kidneys, causes cancer. Too much sugar harms the arteries. But non-saturated fat, eat all you want? It can't be true. There's a glycemic index for carbs but there should be a lipid index for fats cause too much can't be healthy.
