  • I got to begin my Grouse hunting season with Mac on a 3-day trip, Tuesday-Thursday after opening weekend. Overall saw 14-15 birds, shot at a few and got 5. I'll post a part 2 for Thursday. The grouse sure know how to hide themselves in September.

Fantastic hunt! I'm from Scotland where getting into hunting is tough. Went on my first grouse hunt whilst I was on vacation in Ontario a few weeks back, got 6 in 2 days. Great experience, will definitely be back for more!

Grouse shooting in Scotland in my opinion is the best in the world, although very different and sadly very expensive.

I've Olney limited out twice in a year just now.
It's been a very good year in Idaho and Utah.
Don't feel bad about taking the yearlings. It's very rare that an elder makes it to 4 years.

You should check out the Scout-and-Hunt mapping by Northwind Enterprise. Their maps show you aspen cuts - size of cut year cut how many acres stem density and what type of trees are around the cut. The information they give you is unbelievable. I think it’s the best app out there and was designed by a forester for hunters that hunt ruff grouse and woodcock.

Up near orr, they sure do find good wats of stating hidden in whatever little green is left. Shot a limit by days end saturday but really had to work for them. Once the 20th of oct gets here the woods will be primed up nice and birds are far more plentiful. Got a new benelli ethos 28ga this year and did a combo duckstgrouse weekend at the cabin. I noticed you're using that On X Hunt ap. I just became aware of that ap last week. Is it any good? Do you think it helps you identify younger aspen vs. mature forests? How recent are their maps? Like, are they within the past 3 years or are they older? Going up to northern Michigan next month so trying to get prepared now. Thanks.

I love the app and couldn’t hunt without it now. That being said, it will get you in areas you need to be in but you’ll have to do some driving or boots on the ground to distinguish young aspens from mature. Good luck in Michigan!

Keith- Check out the Scout-and-Hunt maps by Northwind Enterprises. There map will tell you everything about the area you pick to hunt size of cutting year cut what type of forest and trees around it loads of information. They update it I believe twice a year. I also hunt Michigan and I wouldn’t be without their mapping. It’s color coded for easy identification of different types of forests. I’m getting ready for a 2 week trip to the UP and their maps save a lot of time and gas. Check it out I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

@@MNomad_Outdoors I used to own one in 12 ga. and had a friend with a 410. Both guns had the same problem (discovered on the skeet range) of the Safety/Selector switch malfunctioning. When mine jammed on the first or second time out, I took the gun apart and found a wood shaving in the mechanism. Shook out the wood chips and dust, put it together and never had the problem return. The 410 gauge ended up going back and was replaced.
