  • I got to begin my Grouse hunting season with Mac on a 3-day trip, Tuesday-Thursday after opening weekend. Overall saw 14-15 birds, shot at a few and got 5. This video is of the second full day of hunting. The grouse sure know how to hide themselves in September.

    I am 66 and retired in North Carolina,, and have grouse hunted all my life and harvested hundreds of grouse here all within a few miles from my home ,,in the eighties n nineties I knew where there were north facing cliffs that had fox grape vines as big around as my thigh that grew to the very tops of ancient old white and red oaks,,if I went to some of these places at daylight I could sometimes count as many as forty grouse roosted in those vines , in the tops of those trees standing in one spot ,,unbelievable, and guess what ,, I’ve never shot one out of a tree or on the ground and not because I wouldn’t do it but because our grouse here will flush on sight , even at 100 yards ,if they see you , they flush ,, and sometimes fly a mile.
    After December when winter set in,,they would sometimes hold tight ,,especially around a spring head , and that was the secret to getting a good shot at one.

    I've found worms in grouse. Maybe 1 in 100. I've also found the same northern Pike, Is Brooke trout, Rabbits, And turkey. Not too much in having a dog that Had them as a puppy.(round worms). Is kind of creepy right. Just think of how many animals who ate that had them but you didn't know they did. Worms that may have been in the early stage.

    I have spent most of my grouse life in the Hibbing and MacGregor areas, never ever seen a parasite in a grouse before.

    When you take the shot at 12:50 you can actually hear the grouse make a noise right before you get up to the dog

    I was grouse hunting last week here in alberta canada and found a pile of garbage as usual so I loaded it into my truck. Man that passes me off. Then they wonder why our crown land gets shut down .

    I've never heard of parasite worms in Grouse. I guess I'll be looking more closely when cleaning them. Going north to Tofte when the leaves are down later in October. Last year was great hunting on the Gunflint.

    Hunted grouse as a kid! No dog. Just walk 3 steps and stop! Evergreens and edges of gullies! Video took me back. Get off the road and into the brush!

    Great video. We have a place on the north shore by two harbors and I've always wanted to try and hunt Grouse on the north shore.
    What gun & shells are you using? Looks like a 12 g but I thought most people use 20 ga.... I've only hunted pheasant.

    What time of the day do you get out and what is also the most productive part of the day??

    • @MNomad_Outdoors
      @MNomad_Outdoors  10 місяців тому +1

      9 am is productive. They get off roost and feed. If it’s wet/dewey or had rained it may delay them getting off roost. You can hit them anytime from 8-5 but 9-12 is a very good time to be out walking
