BWCA 2024 Ima Lake and Jordan Lake
We got a bit wind blown and had some rough weather on our first morning. Travel wasn't looking likely so we hunkered down. Thankfully the following day we were able to move off Ima to Jordan.

2024 Turkey Hunting Northern MN (Close Encounters and Illegal Road Hunters)

Got out early to do some scouting and found lots of birds moving around, Toms all fanned up going after hens. Went out in Season A to try and capitalize on the mild winter and moving birds. We had a few close encounters that got messed up by others and myself. It was a pretty tough year for hunting in northern Minnesota. I know plenty of other hunters had it hard as well. Mac and I took a break from hunting ducks and geese on opener and went north to look for some grouse. Lots of leaves up still with peak color only a week or so away. I had an opportunity to check out a private pond surrounded by cornfields west of the twin cities for this early teal season. We saw a lot of ducks on opening morning and fewer on Sunday. Came out of the hunt with three birds but saw many more. Identifying the teal was a bit tougher than expected. Mac had some good retrieves and we had fun until the 100-degree weather came in.

We didn’t catch many actually. There was a good portion of the time where it was just too windy to get the canoe out. We fished for a half hour or so each evening but never got on them. Some of the guys i go with are more into the camping scene rather than fishing so our trip isn’t as fishing-focused as most groups are.

Few things: 1) Super cool trail cam footage, especially that group of jakes just gobbling in unison. 2) I appreciate a father taking/lugging their kid around while outdoors. My daughter is almost 2yo and I haul her around on my winter/spring beaver trapline and when we go catfishing on the river bank. We gotta start these kids out on the right path from the get go, so kudos to you! 3) Unfortunate about that literal road hunter and them spooking off that Tom and then running in his flip flops of all things back to his car. Some people just don't think at all about shooting from a highway like that and bushwhacking a bird.

You have a point, however, we were in at least 200 feet off the edge of road. Thats a lot different than pulling over and shooting from the shoulder. Is that acceptable behavior to you? Doesn't seem like ethical hunting to me.

When hunting gets "tuff" you might want to change your tactics . Being a fellow MN deep woods hunter myself, I have to say I like to see your videos. However, I think you may have a little "he who wanders disease" or "grass is greener on the other side of the fence". I know it is hard to sit still all day and I am kind of sure it is not in you "yet". But you could try this one day next year... Sleep in, get to the woods about 8-8:30am, find your spot by 9am or so, sit till at least 2pm. Big bucks move in the big woods mid-day, especially during the rut. Let the other hunters in the woods be your DOGS. You stay put. I can sit all day, but most years out of the last 45 years. I squeeze my trigger right around 10-11am while "you" are walking out of the woods!!! Few times it's been around noon and have one in my journal at 1:45. It might take a few days, heck this year it was day 5 at 10:45. I've had wolves push deer to me at 12:30 and again at 3:30. I would like wolves more if there were less of them!!!. Just one little tip from an "old gray haired coot". When I was your age, I ate a couple tags because I had "happy feet" but I chased deer to others in our group, I was a good "DOG"..LOL. Keep the videos coming, be careful on the ice!! God Bless Happy New Year

For the most par they should be fairly close. I’d say C and IC. If you want you could go IC and modified but I would go more restrictive than that. If it’s windy look to cover. Low spruce trees in popple thickets. Otherwise just find clear cuts near water and pines. Look for good food sources on the ground. No snow yet so they will still be hitting leafy greens and catkins.

Look for spots that will get birds out of the rain. Yes, they live outside, but grouse don’t like being wet even if they like wet soil that has their favorite foods. Look to spruce trees or other pines where they can take refuge under during rain events. That or other deciduous trees that still have their leaves and a thick canopy.

Liked the video! I've put in on Lake One several times (stayed at the same bunkhouse as you did at Frank's place!). Each time I've been through, we've been able to paddle straight through from Lake Two to Three--you had to portage? Last year, we stayed on the south end of Three also. Our site was just over from yours--the one on the point south of the portage to Horseshoe Lake and close to the Pow Wow Trail. Also a very nice site. Our early-August fishing in that area was not as good as yours was. A jig and a leach under a slip bobber is also my favorite way to fish the BWCA and we tried all around those islands and channel but did not come up with anything. Nice video capture of the fish swimming (sunfish!!) before they bit your hook. I'll bet they were good eating!

Couple of drought years will do that! The flowages between 1,2 and 3 were shallow and rocky. There was water moving but we didn’t want to chance it. The walleye bite was lucky I think. We had favorable winds pushing baitfish into our bay. The sunnies were so good. Just pesky to clean.

Mac is three but has only been through two full seasons. This is the beginning of his third season this fall. Get a pheasant/grouse wing from a bird after your hunts and keep them in the freezer or even if they stay out it’s fine. I keep doing scent training at home with max by hiding the wings around the yard and making him sniff them out

I have the same climber. Where did you find those straps you were talking about? I have just been using some 550 to keep the two parts together. Also love your channel thanks for sharing your stories!

www.amazon.com/dp/B00VR18IVY?ref_=cm_sw_r_apan_dp_5VHQ8TZK31MPZX3EP23Q Third hand Treestand strap stabilizers! They are a must. No more loose pieces rattling while walking in and once you’re up the tree and cinch them down that stand is going nowhere.

What time of the day do you get out and what is also the most productive part of the day??

9 am is productive. They get off roost and feed. If it’s wet/dewey or had rained it may delay them getting off roost. You can hit them anytime from 8-5 but 9-12 is a very good time to be out walking

Great work and major props for being cautious with your shooting! Duck ID takes time, even after a handful of years you still run into those unknowns. Great to see fellow MNers out embracing the heat from this teal season

It’s so hard holding back! But you said it. It’s the right thing. Fun to see birds moving
