My son breaks the multifilament so fast that gut in a gut/poly combo actually ends up being cheaper because it last a little over a week instead of two days.
I tested 1. hybrid (VS natural gut mains / rpm blast crosses ) 2. Natural gut mains / luxilon alu rough crosses Both setups ( 27kg mains / 25.5 kg crosses ) Wilson RF 97 Autograph Version 1. Was soft, flexible with plenty if feel and ball pocketing, but less bite, less spin than 2. Version 2. Was stiff, with less pocketing than 1. but plenty of bite, power and spin... I think in this case that luxilon alu rough had main role in this test. Its great string but its stiffer that rpm blast... i like champion choice better because of more control and spin, and maybe when luxilon drops tension it will be better ... In this case, i think that i sould use lower tension mext time... maybe 25/23.5 Must try :) But alwys , if you play with luxilon alu rough, warm up playing hand, before match :) because muscle over elbow can have “ luxilon impact “ :)
Interesting video. I own my stringing machine and I've used copoly main vs syn. gut crosses for years. Loved it! High durability, high spin, except that the poly goes dead quickly and I must cut them out and restring. But today, I tried syn. gut mains vs poly crosses and I was pleasantly surprised!! High spin, great feel, great power especially for serves. However, the gut is notching badly and should break in a couple hours. I now prefer the gut mains but I'll keep some rackets strung with both setups to give me options for matches.
@@daperamids24 Depends on the setup. Generally the main strings break first (main strings are the vertical strings when holding the racquet upright, handle down, frame up). If your main strings are polyester and cross strings are syn gut, poly is durable, lasts long but goes dead before gut breaks. If main string is gut and cross string is poly, then gut breaks quickly, sometimes even before poly goes dead. I hope that helps.
@@fingersm I completely agree! But I had to change from that due to arm injuries from using poly mains on Babolat Pure Drive rackets for many years. Try stringing the gut or multi mains a little tighter to get more spin. It won't be like a poly main but your arm will last longer.

Switches the Rough with the NEW RPM Power that just came out and might even like that more! All in all, Natural Gut + Poly is the best of the best. Arm-friendly, Playability, Spin........Nothing better!

Is there any value in having different tensions. I mean the multi will bit softer, but the crosses are anyway shorter, thus bit tighter?
There is a school of thought that says the crosses should be a bit lower tension so that the mains can slide along them a bit easier to impart more spin, so the mains maybe a few pounds tighter than the crosses. And like you said, the crosses will be a bit tighter anyway as the longer mains will lose tension a bit faster, so one more reason to go a bit lower on the crosses.
Excellent vid, I do think your view of getting greater spin by using poly mains makes a lot more sense, I mean, those are the strings that are imparting the spin on every shot. I would think poly mains with very smooth cross strings allowing the polys to slide and snap back as they grab and release the ball would be ideal.
I think it's a little subjective. Having a rough main string means it will be horizontal during the swing. I think this will grip the ball a bit better as the racket moves up creating more spin. I've read on TW though that a poly cross can slide on the gut creating more spin as it slides and snaps.

My recent experience with gut as main + poly as cross is that it takes a lot more effort to create spin and I simply don't feel my string biting the ball, especially when the ball speed is low. It is a lot more tiring than using a full set of poly. I played horribly in my first game because there was almost no control and I had no confidence in doing anything. However, I have then adjusted my swing path and forget completely about trying to obtain that "bite" feeling; I find the ball arches a lot higher than usual and my friends say they feel like I have more spin than before. My racket sensor gives me very similar readings before and after switching my strings but I feel like the balls from the hybrid set are harder on the opponent.
That is a great question I get all of the time. I would recommend restringing the mains as well. Cutting out only the mains will put too much torque on the racket frame. It could damage the frame. It is best to restring both main and the cross.
I once tried it and yes, while it's technically possible you wouldn't enjoy the results. According to my tourna stringmeter the crosses are losing more than 50% of their original tension. Not desirable for saving a few bucks.
Not the mains. You can restring only the crosses if it is a recent string job. Just make sure to grip the racket on the stringer tightly before cutting out the crosses, and replace them ASAP. I do that when trying out new cross strings and they comes out fine.

Like you, I used 55lbs on a pure drive for years witg a 17G copoly full bed. Recent arm issues forced me to resort to hybrid strings at 45lbs main, 47lbs cross. Lost some control, gained some mph, lost some RPM, but my arm is good for many more decades of tennis :)

Gut/multi in mains is such a different feeling for me. Hated it at first but trying to stick with it. Very comfy but i miss the spin of full polly

try to put 3 grams of lead at 12 and 5 grams in the butcap. Magic help

The Prince Synthetic Gut with duraflex is pretty durable in my view. Make sure to get the 16G for durability amzn.to/2HRvfds
