For me, the best saturators are the ones with very few controls & subtle differences when you bypass. I just want a little bit of harmonics added, preferably the even harmonics. I'm still trying to find the exact plugin to use. The Fabfilter Saturn 2 has too many options. I feel the same way about the Fabfilter Pro-L2. Too much to think about & too many ways to ruin the mix... or waste a lot of time trying to dial in (and remember) everything. HOWEVER, I swear by the Fabfilter Pro-Q3. That's my favorite EQ plugin.
Nice, next time I do a heavy SFX and music mix for TV I’m gonna try saturation on my mix bus. Usually only apply a touch on key SFX to bring them out, but you got me thinking now……
little bit of saturation of all of your other busses, upstream of your mix bus will do wonders to keep your compressors and limiters from working too hard. Borderline black magic when applied correctly.
