I want to say that this is the only mixing related channel that I'm comfortable watching, because nobody else explains what the plugins or the hardware does in very clear and brief way. I feel other channels that go in depth on such tools either don't explain why they are using what they are using or they use too many subjective terms that are difficult to understand and the sound mangling demonstrations are too subtly to understand what's going on when they change a setting; I end up feeling I wasted my time with them. Kudos to MixbusTv for planning so many insightful videos for explaining/demonstrating effects the correct way. Never written a comment before but I feel the need to let you guys know that I've learnt a ton in here.
Thanks for including and using our newest delay plug-in.
Your delays rock!
@@mixbustv I missed so much the PSP 42
Mcdsp and repeater are my favorites, great as always David 🤘
Fun video David -- I don't have a lot of options for delay -- I either use ValhallaDelay or Echoboy. I really loved the sound of Repeater, EC-300 and PSP 285. Will check those out -- thanks again!
Holy moley! This bass with fragments sounds aaaaaaaawsomeeeee! Gotta get it!
Great video. Definitely going to try the Replayer. Has a very nice modern sound
The PSP 285 is absolutely fantastic. A delay with useful synthlike control. LFO, Reverb, M/S, *Multiple filter types* ~ I had the PSP 85 and loved it. This update is all that! Easily worth a demo. The Stomp Delay is yet another 'secret weapon' delay. PSP is quiet as kept. Glad I found them years ago because they put out good things. Even the older code is great!
So refreshing to hear audio samples that are good while youre demonstrating - the amount of videos by others Iv had to stop immediately because the tracks being used are excruciating to listen to on repeat - really appreciate the quality of the audio tracks being used, pleasure to listen to - and good presentation/info as always
Thank you! I'm blessed to get mix awesome artists
All of these are very good and above just a delay. I can't seem to get away from my Valhalla Delay from a bundle i purchased such long time ago. That PSP 285 sounds absolutely legend 🔥 Absolutely stunning
I really like the look of UVI Relayer!
Here are a few of my favourites:
Native Instruments Replika XT
AudioThing Reels
Eventide Physion Mk II
Pulsar Audio Echorec
Definitely "old school" and really lean on EchoBoy and Repeater. Good stuff!
ValhallaDelay is one delay I always default to. It's amazing, like everything from ValhallaDSP. :D
I don't know how ValhallaDelay didn't make this list. It looks really simple but is incredibly deep.
@@stevenkish9061 If there's anything I'd take away from it, it's that you can't completely get rid of the noise it generates. But it's still awesome. :D
The delay plugins I use the most for a modern delay I use the Valhalla Delay and for a retro sounding delay I use IKMultimedia Tape Echo and the Slate Digital Repeater
For creative delays, Other Desert Cities and the Valhalla delays are the most notable omissions to this list. Somebody below mentioned H-Delay, and for straightforward applications, it is a really nice sounding delay. Also, for character delays, all of the Audiority emulations are really, really nice.
Also really nice to see Repeater on this list. I feel that Repeater delivers what EchoBoy says it does but doesn't.
Thanks Davy.
did u do one for studio monitors in different budgets? i got some for $100 but i'm ready to upgrade to $400-$800 used/new
UAD AMS DMX / SDD-3000, PSP Echo, Acustica Lemon, Sound Toys Echoboy / Crystalizer, Freakshow Industries Backmask, and NI Replika are probs my most used delays.
The PSP285 sounds great. Tape Echoes as well. Which do you think typically gets the most use for natural styles? 285 looks a bit initimidating but the guitar sounded really nice.
My dude, you don't like d16 tekturon or sigmund? Also thanks to this video and uvi voucher I now have relayer which is great, I love multi tap delays
You named all the ones I like except Valhalla Delay. Stupid versatile and very powerful. Although certain types can be noisy on that one (only thing I wish they'd fix on that plug)
Check out the old but still great.. Line 6 Echofarm.. still one of the best
Great video.
FabFilters Timeless 3 is what I would say is one of the most complex delays with which you can create whatever delay with.
yeah and that's the problem. Just like ProQ 3 "could" create any curve, the reality is who tf want's do sit there and spend 1h trying to recreate something that's much better and available right away.
True enough. But it’s great when you’re in a creative, sound design mindset, it’s awesome. At least to me.
David, hope all is well. What are your thoughts on the Tubesessor from Heritage Audio?
I can only go with the specs and the other units I have from them since I've never tried it, I think on paper could be a good unit. Optos are a bit tricky but this seems to have more than enough features to be a versatile unit. They use custom transformers so they are similar but not the same as those famous sounds we are used to hear, for better or worse. It's definitely inspired by the cl1b, tell them to send me one and we'll review it
@@mixbustv thanks for the input! I’m definitely intrigued by it. I love the other gear I’ve purchased from them, Symph EQ and Successor. I can reach out to see what they say. If you review it and say it’s a go, I’ll get one asap.
I use Valhalla Delay a lot!
I guess is time to start using somethingels besides Echoboy 😅 , no much time to try new stuff, thanks 🙏🏽
Jo I miss ur ultra fast intro speech.
PS: I got the Arturia plugin now. Thx bro
News from youtube, intros are dead, they need to be in the middle of the video this year
@@mixbustv for me, it was 😎
Ohmforce Ohmboyz delay..... love the fact you can add lfo to different parameters....
That's also really cool. I remember I had to get it after inherit a session from a client who had it all over the place
my go to are baby audio comeback kid and mcdsp ec-300
Valhalla has always been my go to, i noticed it kills my ram so i tried finding some alternatives, many sound amazing but the usability of Valhalla is superior when doing live automation and effects
if you're on Windows the problem is most likely your optimization or lack of. Watch my video on it
Echoboy for the last 10 years but seemed weaker in sound in comparison or at least less loud than other examples. Also the Arturia Eternity is cool
I have a question. If you could only have a 12u or 16u rack of hardware what would you have in your studio? What can't you live without? What would be the best choices for someone just getting into Hardware for their studio if they could only have a 12 or 16 space rack, sans power conditioner? ART Pro VLA II?
What you see on my desk IS what I would have because I could have everything I want and each one of these units I picked because are my favorites
Speaking of Echoboy, do you ever use it solely for the saturation module, without any actual delay? I've found it super useful on vocals and synths
yes
For heavy tape roll-off Echoboy is my favourite 💯
As a creative delay: Objeq Delay (by AAS) or Sandman Pro (by Unfiltered Audio). Otherwise EC300 or Tape Echoes.
I did a preset pack for AAS
Audio Damage - Other Desert Cities.
Which one do you usually like the most for a louder slapback on vocals in a typical rock song?
EC-300 or sometimes J37
@@mixbustv thanks, I need to check them out!
How's H delay? As it is a super common and easy to use delay plugin and you didn't mention it, it must be some reasons that make you stay away from it.
To me H delay is just a very straight forward plugin. It has the simpler UI than even the DAW default delay plugin. Only one thing is that it can not control the L R delay individually.
Too little control
I wouldn't use H-Delay for more exotic effects (like the McDsp Delay or Other Desert Cities) but that being said, it is my most used delay by a mile.
If you have to decide for just one delay? Which one is the best Allrounder? Thanks
Repeater and EC-300
As a dub delay I really like Softube Tube Delay, every repeat breaks up a little more like an old beat up analog delay. I don't know any other plugin that sounds the same way.
That't interesting. I have Echoboy, Baby Audio's Comeback Baby, Softube's Tape Echoes, and a couple others including Tube delay. I love all those others for different reasons but have never once found a situation where I really like Tube delay. I've tried it a few times and fiddled with it a bit, but I never really liked it. Maybe I need to try again!
@@evanmcgregor3758 I use Comback Kid when I need a ducker or flangy delay.
Echoboy when I need saturation on a delay or a tape emulation that is heavily coloured with the delay on 0ms.
H-Delay when i need a basic lofi delay.
Softube Tube Delay when I need a true Dub Delay for the tail breakup.
IK Multimedia Space Delay if I need a Roland RE201 Space Echo.
McDSP EC300 for some random delay for sound design.
@@NoQualmsTheArtist yeah cool, exactly- lots of different uses. But at the end of the day I just simply didn’t like the tone of the tube delay, which is weird because I love a lot of other tube stuff. But it’s been a while so I might revisit. Cheers!
FIRST! IRST! RST! ST! T! !😆 love delays!
TC 2290 is the best, using it 99,9% of time
Repeater is the most I’ve ever spent on a audio plugin. I thought it was thin or lacking but hearing you use it, it’s far from it. I Would appreciate a Repeater tutorial. It might just be quieter by default? compared to other delays?
Yes the default starts a bit below zero
@@mixbustv I'll get to experimenting!
Everytime a new delay plugin came out that took my interest, i would see if i could do the same in Echoboy, and yea so far i could.
But i can hear that i like the modelling on D16 Repeater. Need to test the TC Electronic stuff and the PSP285.
I swear i have a few lesser known 'secret weapons' for delay, but i can't think right now, been on a break. Oh i like the Manny Marroquin delay with it's built in fx, the result is pretty specific and i couldn't match it with anything else. Sometimes it works so well, othertimes not so much (like most tools).
However, every time i see the Waves Update costs i nearly vomit, so honestly screw Waves, i'm going to keep less than a handful and sell the rest.
It's insane. The cost of updating is alot more than what i paid for the plugins in total 🤦
You can replicate Manny's, it's not really anything special. Verbs, saturation, chorus and phaser after a clean delay.
@@mixbustv Yes, nothing special but i couldn't match the sound of the fx they used on there. It's really tailored to suit the delay, like alot of those artist series. I can live without it. Just another style and colour out of many.
I'm really not sure the effects are tailored. Most likely they are algos from existing Waves plugins added to it
@@mixbustv that's what i was thinking, just couldn't find which ones
Fabfilter Timeless 3
echoboy in rhythm mode (h3000 ultratap)
There's the actual H3000 by Eventide which should have been mentioned here
Great review, but what's up with your hair?
Why are you paying so much attention to another man's hair is the real question
Finally like CeCe Peniston!!!!!!!!
Too many delays, to little time. I have them all and more, and still wanna buy guitar delays ;) PS. no love for valhalla delay and supermassive (my favorites) ?
I mentioned Valhalla effects on countless video and I said many times just buy everything they make. I don't want to be redundant
Well I have two of them. The others are now shouting 'spend money' at me. Thanks for that.
😄
FF Timeless 3
3:58 studio headphone monitor crossover feedback much wink, wink. It's not a diss lol
You mean bleed. It's a scratch track
@@mixbustv yes thanks for the correction. It wasn't a critique; I just wanted to make you laugh, man.
🙂👍
Where is Valhalla delay??? PSP MD 508??? D16 Tekturon??? UVI is a Master!!!!!!!
Are we naming every single delay on the market?
@@mixbustv only the best ones.
McDSP warning for Windows/Ableton users: the ec300 sounds phenomenal but doesn’t recall settings on Windows with Ableton Live. At all. Presets aren’t available for VST2 as well. They’ve released a paid update for it but from what I’ve been able to find online, these issues don’t appear to have been fixed. McDSP is very much a “Pro Tools on MacOS” focused dev. That platform you’re probably good, all others do research before buying
it is possible to fix. you just have to put the presets in the right folder on your PC, as the installer puts themm where your DAW doesn't see them. I fixed it by hand i now i see the presets in Reaper. I'm using th v.6 jf this plugin btw, i decided not to upgrade
The best delay is the one you don't use
Just to clarify, I used to slap delay on everything.
🤦♂️
Don’t buy plugins. It’s a waste of money
- Oscar Fisher
I like that David avoided falling into the FabFilter fanboy trap. e.g. "OMFG all FabFilter products go hard in the paint! They rock! Especially for my delay video here, Timeless 3 is the delay plugin to beat".
nice list!
If anyone looking for a great freebie, check Cocoa Delay out ;)
Tried Pulsar Echorec.? It's a one trick pony, but an awesome trick at that
I have it, it's great
