Your channel has some really great, informative videos and I will certainly be taking these tips onboard. I can feel that I am beginning to relapse in my depression and anxiety, so I look forward to implementing some of these! Depression runs in my family, and I have had a few relapses already (I'm 22), but a good thing about this is that I can tell when things aren't going so well. Thank you for your great information!

You are welcome. I am glad that you said, "I can tell when things aren't going so well." This is the first part of relapse prevention. Here is a video I made on the subject that I think you will enjoy. ua-cam.com/video/76FD9n7T9Uk/v-deo.html
If you give me your email address, I will send you a free chapter on relapse prevention from my book Healing From Depression: 12 Weeks to a Better Mood.

"this too shall pass " , I used this phrase in a moments emotional pain, and to my surprise, it helped me to reduce it. There is something powerful in these words.

Douglas Bloch funny how phrases affect us all differently, this too shall pass, used to and still dos really wind me up!
Yes it passes but I dread the next episode, each time it feels like I’m fighting death, but each time I get more tired, and feel like welcoming death.
This too shall pass......till next time....when the sufferer may pass.

I’ve always said that no one truly understands depression unless they have experienced. I find your channel and videos the most helpful with information that makes sense to my depressed brain. I believe what u say because you have experienced it. I am starting to implement your advice and things are working! My bad days are no longer weeks but just a day or two. Slow changes are happening which is encouraging. You also validate my feelings which helps me feel understood & I share ur videos with my friends to help them
Understand as well. I also like your calm & honest demeanor. It helps me trust in what you say & feel less shameful of what I’m experiencing. THANK YOU!! You have truly turned your suffering into helping others. I know I can’t be alone in feeling this way. I subscribed and keep watching & working because as u know it doesn’t happen overnight. And the short videos help keep my attention and not feel overwhelmed. Excellent job!!! Also....I can tell you really care because you KNOW first hand how this disease can destroy you and how the people who haven’t experienced it can say all the wrong things. You are helping me! Thank you!💖

Hi Doug I hope you are well, my friend?
I always gain value from your videos and this one (and Part 2) are no exception, especially as I am currently going through a depressive episode since yesterday. I also have the first of my driving lessons tomorrow which is a bit of a good and bad thing; good in one way because it means I have something important to focus on etc but bad in some ways because my mental and physical energies are just not up there at the moment.
Wish me well and I'll let you know how I get on...

When I was on Citalopram it masked the depression so that I felt OK without even doing the things that prevent depression such as exercise, practicing mindfulness, volunteering and social contact. It made me feel too tired to do those things. So when I came off Citalopram or changed medication I became depressed.

Thanks, Douglas. Another source of hope is knowing the meds will kick in. For me it's generally 4-6 weeks. Sometimes even less. In the meantime, I have low energy, feelings of withdrawal and poor self-talk. One must realize your thinking is distorted. Doug's idea of do not isolate is helpful, though when low, people like me tend to ruminate, that is, continually think over and over about your problems and how badly you feel. Pushed myself to attend a family youth basketball game, and lost my low feelings by visiting with family and a few acquaintences. Took my mind off my worries and distracted me. Douglas seems to have a strong support team. Some of us do not, so this can be challenging. I try to follow what's worked for me before: music thru my ipod, exercise and seeing people. It's OK, I think, to slow down and put less pressure on yourself, too.

    • @DouglasBloch
      @DouglasBloch  5 років тому

Sounds like you have some good coping skills. Your last point is excellent. I have seen people put far too much pressure on themselves to perform when they are depressed, and the results are usually not very good. It’s better to be gentle with yourself and to be patient until you have a better mood and more energy

Dr. you are an amazing person, with a golden heart. I've been watching your videos and they are more helpful than my own therapist. I see now the light the end of the tunnel even though it looks very far from me but, at least now I feel like I will get better. I always tell people those suffered what you are suffering now can understand you better than those have no idea what is to be depressed. My goal in life was to lose weight and I lost over 140 pounds but I feel so miserable... I don't know why. When I was fat I wasn't happy but at least I was happier and now I can't find joy in life.

I’m not quite sure that weight loss contributed to your melancholy. Perhaps you were having about of clinical depression. Have you talk to a psychiatrist or a therapist about this. As I have stated, depression is a treatable condition. I’ve had four major episodes and five hospitalizations and I am still alive and kicking on my 71st birthday.

Some people live nowhere near a gym or may not even have a friend. The best advice for exercise is right at home. Start by running or marching in place for 30 seconds. You can build on it or lower it as you see fit. Try to do this a few times a day or during commercials or at set times. Maybe take a stroll around the building you live in or just a walk to the next corner and back gradually going farther. I hope everyone feels better.

It's 11;30 pm Dec 31, 2017 I am doing the same thing for the last 10 years or so. Nothing not a fucking thing, In my bed watching these people on tv getting ready to celebrate the new year. People that tell it's all in my head all I have to do is get out and do something. That is easier said than done. These people will never understand what depression does to you. I have been fighting this shit my whole life. Eventually, depression is going to win. Without help, I can't stop it when that time comes. I will keep fighting it until the day I die.

Have you thought of joining a depression support group, which would provide a healing community. Also, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) can be effective when antidepressants don't work.

Steve I'm with you. I having depression for few years now due to my relationship broke up and family, kids and financial hardship. I got helped from seeing psychologist for quite sometimes and slowly starting to work again. Then for some reason any job that I got in wouldn't last long only couple of weeks and that was not because I was bad at the job but it just something happened in workplace or something happened and causing me lost the job. Year 2018 I already had 5 jobs and all lost in couple of weeks, this freaked me out even more, it brought me into even more anxiety and depressed than I ever had before, and when this anxiety hits you there is nothing you can do, sometimes you even having fears just to open the door to see outside. I need help badly but not easy to see someone available to help you straight away when you don't have money to pay for the session which is cost $180 per hour

I've never liked New Year's Eve, even when I feel well.
In the years I've been depressed that day, I've googled "alone on new year's eve." It's amazing how many people are experiencing the same thing, and not just depressed people -- it's people who just moved to a new city and haven't made friends, people who hate crowds, people who are sick at home or in the hospital, etc. There is a lot of support to be found online.

I’m having trouble with isolation & exercise. And just engaging with the world. I have a therapist I’m on their waiting list... and I’m considering taking a antidepressant since I tried supplements. I need that boost in my mood.

I'm doing my best at these things but in October 2020 I've been mostly isolated all year and it's taking its toll. I'm sleeping way too much and living alone, shut in, and social opportunities are really scarce with covid. Even though I should be, it's really hard to get motivated to exercise or even eat regularly.

A lot of us are going through the same thing. We have a gym in Portland called 24 hour fitness which is open partially. You can sign up for times to work out and also work with a trainer. You might want to try something like that where you live. I also have my friend Bicycle with me. Maybe you can find someone to take a walk with as long as you stay 6 feet apart

The word doc was saved and renamed as benevolent Douglas Bloch ^u^
