    The heavily implied father figure/mentor relationship throughout the years, the age gap, the fact shes his best friend's daughter and son's long time girlfriend just makes the sex scene all the more creepy lol

      Should have been the most logical and surprising reason why dick grayson quit as robin in the animated series

    • @BadWolf739
      @BadWolf739 7 років тому +101

      Actually that was the reason Dick quit being Robin in the cartoon. At least in the comics that continued the DCAU. In the Batman Beyond 2.0 comics that continued the cartoon there was an story which introduced Nightwing to that era with a few flashbacks in which Barbara and Bruce slept together behind Dick's back and she got pregnant, the timing of which meant Nightwing couldn't be the father (followed by a miscarriage). The story gets out and Dick leaves Gotham because of it. And when the story comes out in Neo Gotham it prompts Terry to ditch Bruce for Dick as a mentor figure as he believes Bruce is ultimately motivated by self interest.
      It was really messed up but at least the comic had the decency to treat the situation as really messed up rather than the love letter to Batman/Batgirl that the guy in charge of Killing Joke pretty much confessed that intro was.

    They should have fleshed out the Joker's backstory and traumatizing of Gordon instead of tacking on a romance at the start. Added more details on the Joker's descent into madness, maybe his first murders. There's so much good material and so much wasted potential on ways they could have done this instead of just tacking on a Batgirl romance

    • @funandmessygirls9554
      @funandmessygirls9554 8 років тому +28

      I disagree. part of what makes the joker so incredible is that we don't know anything about him. Hell he is so fucked up he doesn't even know the truth to his own backstory. I think fleshing out the joker would of made it worse

      Luke think a little before making a fool out of yourself.Barbara Gordon has always been a lot younger than Batman she is at most 26 years old since Batman is on his mid 40s and Barbara is supposed to be around 20 years younger than him and in the Arkhamverse Tim Drake becomes Robin when he was 17 years old and he is only about 5-6 years younger than Barbara so not really all that creepy.

    They should have animated "The Man Who Laughs". Showing the very first
    meeting between Batman and Joker who have made a better introduction for
    The Killing Joke. Plus "The Man Who Laughs" is a short comic, it
    probably would have taken the exact run time as Batgirl's story. And
    would have been more effective in telling a complete Batman and Joker
    story or at the very least a complete Joker story.

      The rating system in the US is pritty fucked. The mpaa rate movies with a very inconsistent standard. Worse they use the nc17 rating to Censor any movie they don't like. If your an independant film maker they can slap your movie with an nc17 and and most theaters will not touch your movie because of the collusion between the studios and the theaters. There all abounch of Cunts.

      The original The Killing Joke had no such subplot. Bruce is like a second father to Barb in the Animated Series and everything else I know of.
      At most, in some continuities she has a short lived juvenile crush on Bruce.

      The first half of the film was based on a Batgirl story that came out a few months before The Killing Joke and has been largely forgotten. It covered her in a caper that gets too personal and she quits at the end of the story. The character had faded out of popularity at the time, and DC wanted to set her up a little before using her in The Killing Joke.
      Also, the Batgirl x Batman relationship never happened in the comics, but was mentioned several times in other DC Animated Universe shows.

      +Warren Carlson So... the problem is the name of the movie.. it shouldnt have been named The Killing Joke... it d be better if they put another name and combine both stories to make sense... the first 30 min need more sense to get releated to the Jokers story....

      They could also have intercut the stories to build up tension leading to the Joker reveal. It would've been nice to have less of the Batgirl* story and more scenes of Barbara and Jim or Bruce and Dick or Tim.

    I wanted to like this movie. I really, REALLY wanted to. I tried to justify the bad parts so hard. And it's not like the great parts aren't great. It just could have been so much better. This should have been the best animated Batman movie, a way to sign off the OG voice cast and leave a reminder of just how amazing Batman stories can be. In the words of joker, "God dammit."

      The killing joke isn't about the story, the story is good but it's about the joker and his relationship with batman, and also in there batman is more human than ever and at the same time more stranged from reality than ever. If quality was measured only in terms of "what story am I watching" we wouldn't have a hundred remakes of the classics.

      Let's be real for a second: there's no goddamn way they ever would have been able to live up to the original comic. The original comic is a one-of-a-kind artistic masterpiece that's presented in a style that can only be found in graphic novels. By animating it, a lot of the subtle intricacies are inevitably lost. Even without the extra stuff they added it wouldn't have worked. It would have taken millions of more dollars and talent matching that of the original artists to even come close. Frankly I don't think they should have even tried it

      FMAB translates very well to screenplay though. You always have to consider how the source material translates to screenplay. Even though it's not a manga, episode 0 of Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works (2014) is an example of being too faithful to the source material to the point of having no regard for pacing. They somehow came up with an entire slew of new problems for this adaptation but just making a 1:1 word for word adaptation isn't a good idea in practice, unless the source material naturally translates well. Even FMAB had liberties taken to work better in animated format.

Cant make it any better when both kevin conroy and Mark hamil nail their perfomances especially at the end when the joker has that sad moment then tells a joke or perhaps the second best part, mark hamil singing...again.

    The Killing Joke is extremely overrated. It has the joker trying to be understood and make a statement about his life. this is not what the joker does. The Joker is the ultimate psychotic. The point of his life is to cause as much suffering and anguish as possible, and laugh at it. The less sense it makes, the more random the suffering, the funnier it is to him. Trying to reach out and be understood is something Poison Ivy, or Two Face would do because they are still, in some way, trying to cling to sanity.

    • @davyrando1203
      @davyrando1203 8 років тому +19

      That's just the new version of the joker. The Original joker was closer to a Jack Nicholson joker - slightly insane but more of a cruel master criminal. In the silver age, comics were self-censored before the government shot them down, so Joker became just a jokester. When darker theme re-appeared in the modern ear (1970's), that is when insane joker came into being.

    This movie is getting a lot of much deserved hate. I agree the first half sucked and was pointless. I feel the other issue this movie had was it felt very dated. I may be wrong, but wasn't The Killing Joke one of the first stories that was darker and were a more twisted Joker was utilized. That is what made it legendary, because it was different. Unfortunately for this adaptation it felt weak and dated. We have seen the edgier Joker and darker Batman so this version, which was groundbreaking at the time, feels very tame and status quo in 2016.

They related to each other because they were two guys who just had "one bad day", and they shared a very human moment at the end. There wasn't even much violence in it.

    I find it disappointing how whenever someone talks about this movie, they focus more on the terrible 30-minute prologue rather than the actual Killing Joke part of the movie which is actually very faithful. I mean, if you find that first 30 minutes really distracting, I completely understand. But it just bugs me when that's the only part of the film anyone talks about.

    • @timwilbur4387
      @timwilbur4387 8 років тому +6

      People talk most about it because it simply shouldn't be there. If that prologue bullshit wasn't there, we would all only be talking about The Killing Joke portion and how it was actually pretty good. But instead with that first act shit, it's so out of place, people can't help but talk about it.

    They made this movie like the Killing Joke was too short, and we needed a big huge thing of basically batgirl fights and stories anyone who even cares to watch a animated batman feature already knows. She's Barbara Gordon, daughter of Jim Gordon, she's Batgirl, she kicks ass but does not have the wisdom of batman, like he does robin, he does see her as an equal. This movie turns 40 minutes of some silly super generic storyline that would've been considered a "filler" episode of Batman: The Animated Series. Then, the Killing Joke begins. Mark Hamill read the exact same "Why aren't you laughing" scene or recorded it before, and it sounds better than how it's said in this high budget animated...flash film. Who was in charge of this, seriously? The eerie ending scene missing the light leaves the ending ruined. The carnie scenes are great and terrifying, but the "I knew this would paralyze her" nonsense made no sense. I think Joker's corruption of Harvey Dent and killing Rachael Dawes in "Dark Knight" was probably more tolerable, and yes, I'm saying it, those were the worst elements of that film.

      story was meh(mostly the filter parts and the bad implantation of the elements from the comic) but animation was horrible. There were very limited particle effects, rain and a lot of such stuff looked like it was made by some kid on his home computer. horrible filter on jokers flashbacks to the past was painful to watch. a lot of the story depends on the atmosphere and here they did not even bothered with key elements like the police sirens at the end of the comic. some parts were so stilted that even I noticed and I usually don't.

Meanwhile the entire time Joker is teasing her about how she's just a pretender. That she'll never be anything close to who the Batman is. And then after they capture him and place him in jail, follow it up with Killing Joke.

    i dont get why any time something dc comes out, everyone has to bash it for every negative thing there is, and everyone just sees a review online and their mind is already made up. it's ridiculous.
    1. the batgirl storyline was made so that we would know the character more, and to give batman more of a drive.
    2. who care about the batsex? when barbara and bruce told terry about their past nobody gave a damn in batman beyond, but now we're in a time and age where everything is complained about.
    3. the animation was meant to reflect the comic book, which it did
    4. the voice acting was perfect like always.

      Ehhhh, it's not too open in the comic. Thematically and in conjunction with the story the Joker tells at the end plus the imagery on the final page, it's an inescapable conclusion that Batman kills him. Also it's, like, the title of the story. It's a pun.
      The ending didn't translate to film/animation very well though.

    I was legitimately surprised by how underwhelmed I was by this movie, and even by the performances. I wonder if Kevin Conroy has reached a point where he's just sick of playing Batman. He's been doing it for more than two decades. He phoned it in. We've all heard umpteen times where he nailed it, so we know what it sounds like when his heart isn't in it. Maybe he's just doing it for a paycheck now. Would explain why his voice pops up in lesser Batman projects you've never heard of.

      The comics you speak of are part of the Bruce Timm animated universe continuity not any mainstream comic continuity. The only time we see a Babs and Bruce pairing is when Bruce Timm is involved (he was involved in this movie too). For all the great stuff Timm and Dini has given us in the animated series and the DC animated universe, that is one of the few things that most people were against. It's just a weird pairing that Bruce Timm seems to ship.

      You'd be wrong to think people didn't complain or dislike it back then. It's just that because this is current and people talk about it online more than they did back then. Also I fail to see why it is stupid to complain about. It is wrong on many levels. From Batman's side he's sleeping with his adopted son's ex, his best friend's daughter, and someone he was mentoring as a crime fighter. So Batman's betraying his adopted son and best friend, as well as basically being a teacher who sleeps with his students. Batgirl on the other hand comes off as a woman with an Electra complex, to her Batman's an older man who is best friends with her father who also shares some similarities with her father. No matter how you slice it Batman's an older mentor figure in her life. Not to mention she's sleeping with the adopted father of her ex. She doesn't think that this might cause a riff between their bond?
