- David Attenborough himself takes us through the fascinating - and often surprising - life cycle of desert plants. From their incredible tenacious qualities to their long lives, they're a little like Sir David himself!
A xerophyte (or desert plant) is a species of plant that has adaptations to survive in an environment with little liquid water, such as a desert or an ice- or snow-covered region in the Alps or the Arctic. Popular examples of xerophytes are cacti, pineapple and some Gymnosperm plants.
The structural features (morphology) and fundamental chemical processes (physiology) of xerophytes are variously adapted to conserve water, also common to store large quantities of water, during dry periods. Other species are able to survive long periods of extreme dryness or desiccation of their tissues, during which their metabolic activity may effectively shut down. Plants with such morphological and physiological adaptations are xeromorphic. Xerophytes such as cacti are capable of withstanding extended periods of dry conditions as they have deep-spreading roots and capacity to store water. Their waxy, thorny leaves prevent loss of moisture. Even their fleshy stems can store water.

Yeah man here in Phoenix this past monsoon season we got so much rain, my landscaping bills were CRAZY cus of how fast desert plants grow with continuous rain
@7Ply I've always thought it would be a cool Tucson tradition to wait for the first monsoon in July to shoot off your fireworks. Celebrate the rain, Independence Day, and not light A mountain on fire lol.

@@eschwarz1003 Could be but i'm not, Look at how much he's traveled all over the world. You don't think he walked there or a flock of seagulls took him upon their wings? Planes spit out alot of pollution, among all the other ways he's gotten around.
@@dankyjoker he's probably done enough to offset that, by telling the public about the dangers of climate change. Even if only 5 people took serious measures after that, it's still way more than enough to make up what his travel causes. Apart from that, in the millions of people who have watched nature documentaries narrated by him, there are probably more than 5 people who change their everyday life for better

I've been caring for a cactus for about 2 years now and I _think_ it's gonna flower this year, it's definitely doing something. I am sooooo excited
I hope it flowers well for you. I just had a cactus flower for the first time in 5 years. I have 5 cacti and they are fantastic. One of them started at 3” tall and now it is well over 2 feet. I’ve had to take its cacti “branches” off I don’t know what they’re called but they take so much nutrients from the main plant. I’d you notice yellowing or the plant is drooping I’d take a few branches off and propagate them. You’ll have even more cacti.

I had a corn plant flower after like 7 years! I was so excited. But MAN, the flowers were REALLY noxious. And pervasive, too! I felt bad clipping it off, but it had to go...

Not really. It is time lapse. Flowers take a while to bloom as they don’t have a circulatory system like us.
I absolutely adore the beauty of cactus flowers. The way the delicate petals unfurl from the prickly exterior of the cactus is simply mesmerizing. Each flower is a stunning work of art, with bold and vibrant colors that draw the eye and capture the heart. Whether in shades of pink, orange, red, or yellow, cactus flowers never fail to amaze me with their unique and intricate beauty.

I have some of these growing in my room. 😁 Cacti and succulents are some of the most fascinating plants on earth, and I love them.

I have a cactus mammilaria that bloomed!
In 2021 in spring i saw that cactus itself get wrinkles
So i decided to water it,
After one day i saw beautyfull bloom of it
Everyday the cactus produced 2 more magenta flowers,
So i get a cotton wab and polinated flowers by myself,
Now i have fruit of it and even more tiny cactus
An i saw a ghost seedling or maybe a variegation,
I do not know, but i will never forget those colorful flowers and a beautyfull scent...
I have several different species of mammillaria. I bought them over the years from plant nurseries, as well as from Aldi's annual $2 succulent sales. I don't know your climate. I live in Ohio. During the times of the year when temperatures are above freezing, I leave all my cacti and succulents outside. If you leave your cacti outside, bees will naturally pollinate them. I find that the small carpenter bee (it's a tiny black bee) is especially fond of cactus flowers. By the way, the fruits of the mammillaria are edible! Yes really! They're completely safe for you to eat. You can just twist them off with your fingers, or use tweezers. The fruits are as sweet as candy.

@@Rusty_fork- My mammillaria cacti bloom every year. In the spring or the summer, depending on the species. The trick to get them to bloom naturally is leave them outside, if possible, when temperatures are above freezing (so, for me, that's late March through early November). If you put them outside, make sure they're in a part sun/part shade area, like under a patio roof, or against the side of the house. Cacti do like sun, but they need shade during the hottest times of the day. Oh, and make sure you fertilize it monthly in the spring and summer, using a cactus and succulent fertilizer. Do not use regular houseplant fertilizer, it contains too much nitrogen for cacti. Anyway, my little mammillaria make tons of yummy fruit!

I used to lived in front of The Hungtinton library Botanical Garden in San Marino California and go almost every other day. They had a section with cactus and desert plants, absolutely divine. It’s one of the most beautiful place I ever see.

Not sure where in the world you're based in, but desert superblooms are definitely worth catching if possible! In the winter of 2015-2016, we had an El Nino year here in California, meaning that it even rained in Death Valley (their so called once in 1000 year rain). So i made my boyfriend come with me to see the super bloom and it was SOOOOO worth it. It's incredible seeing this supposedly dead place turn completely green and extra colorful.
Best narrator of all time in my book.
Cactus and Tropical plants are my favorites. Just so many amazing species.

The video was excellently done. This reminds me of Brooklyn Botanical gardens. New York version of Kew Gardens. There are plants we considered wild that were edible and never knew it e.g Jacobs tears bead was prolific in Guyana and could have used when goods/ foods were banned The educational labelling was amazing. I even met a baseball player among the plants. There were even pebble plants. It's worth a tour. Just beautiful and a mind blowing varieties of pepper types. Tunisia has some amazing plants. There is one of my favourites, called the Arabic rose, highly perfumed deep red/purple rose. There are also many scattered gardens with many other species of plants
I grew up in Brooklyn, and the Botanical Garden was one of my favorite places to visit. The Japanese Garden is so lovely and peaceful.
This man deserves to see his memorial!

I cannot vouch for Sir Attenborough enough. Living in south central New Mexico right next to the Sacramento Mtns. & next-door Federal Bureau of Land Management desert lands, The phrase "Flood of Color" is EXACTLY Correct. It is Just Wonderful.
Cactii are the only plant that can survive my care. Truly wonderful plants.

This man is a real legend for me! He has a way of making people feel like they’re being taken on a journey not just to learn but to experience it along side him! Since a child his voice has become so familiar that I stop to listen no matter what show he is on!
So the most beautiful vibrant flowers have a very short life. Still, how mysterious that cactus with no roots!

I live in the Sonoran Desert in southern Arizona. 🌵 When the barrel cactus flower opens up in the morning, sometimes you find a bee or two sleeping inside. As the day warms up, they come back to life and get busy doing what solitary bees do.
