Just as a point of information, these power steering units have a small rubber gear inside that’s well known to deteriorate and “thunk” when you power them up and turn the wheel. If this happens, simply unbolt the motor from the side and inspect that rubber gear. If it’s bad, replace it and it’s fixed. Dorman sells the gear for around $12.

2:40 ish, Just a few points of enlightenment. The input and output shafts are NOT solidly connected, they are coupled via a resilient coupling (this is a failsafe connection whereby if the EPS fails there is still steering control albeit without assistance). This coupling allows slight angular displacement between the input and output shafts. without a differential load you will see and feel nothing. Once there is angular displacement between the input and output shafts, due to steering system load, the differential is measured electronically and is used to regulate the amount of assistance the EPS delivers, the greater the displacement the greater the assistance. Hope that helps.

Just a little insight.... You can solder a wire into the connector without dissasembling the unit. Just tin the pin and the wire, and then just solder away. you can simply fill the connector hole with silicone after to seal it up. SAVE YOURSELF HOURS! :)

Quick tip on connectors, there's two parts of the connector even on PC boards and if theirs a number or name or both at times its possible to find the connector and the part number for the mate.
At times it takes a little work. But in the age of computers lots of data is online and its amazing at times.
So dont give up to ease as some OEM parts may have the same connector PN or run of parts and you have to pin them down,
Take the VPX Pro or Sport circuit Breaker replace panels for new aircraft.
the connector kit is a few dollars and the pre wire kit with pins is a few 100 dollars and not a bad buy for some home builders or avionics shops as they come with the wires prie crimp and all the builder has to do is match the wire sise to the circuit and put them into the connector.
But I looked at the VPX and was able to track down the connectors and then the pins for each connector and in a range of pins for the wire size of the aircraft circuit.
If you a home builder the computer can do amazing things when tracking down parts
And places like Y Tube can offer amazing advice for your next Ideal no matter how simple or complex

Just for future reference, you could also just connect the single wire to pin #1 in the exterior connector receiver, and then simply fill the remainder of the void in with RTV, or you could put a release agent on it and fill it in with some Bondo to make your own connector "pigtail".

I'm just starting this same mod on my daughter's '63 Nova. I'm going to retain the column shift for the automatic by shortening the shifter mechanism and using a shift cable setup, (I think and hope). Failure is not an option but, just in case, I know where there's another column the same color. I got my steering gear, module, and plug from an '09 Corolla for about $100 at the local u-pull-it yard.

There was an air assisted power steering setup for M35's. The supply has mostly dried up now though.
I have a 1970 AM General M35A2 from Boyce Equipment. They couldn't locate an air assist system for my truck when they were building it out. I wanted real air conditioning also (I'm in Louisiana), another curve ball. They put the power steering system setup from a 5-ton on my truck. It is a hydraulic unit that connects through the gear driven injector pump. I'm running 49" Michelin XL super single tires (bobbed duece) and you can turn the wheel one handed on asphalt. Pricey, but worth it.

My Steering wheel suddenly started to become hard on Park and Neutral but turns normally on Driive and Reverse gear. When that happens, the PS light illuminates and goes off when i engage the Drive or Reverse gear. Any idea on what i should do to get it sorted? Its a 2006 Toyota Crown.

Do these still have thruput if the electrical part goes out? It looks like they would since it may be the same solid shaft that passes thru. Thanks.

So got one of these setups and soldered the wire to the #1 pin. Hooked everything up and the ECU clicks and then nothing. Am I missing something? What are the odds it's bad?

Did you verify it's the right year with the link in description? I missed by one year the first unit I tried and that's exactly what it did.

Does your ignition power cable go straight to power or through a relay?

I'm assuming you're asking about the power steering main power? Yes I do believe this one is on a relay

How could you rig this up to the rear axle of a cargo trailer so you could steer the rear axle around corners on a remote control like some heavy haul trucks?

This video should be used as an example of how NOT to use a welder and angle grinder.

For sure! Shorts, flip flops, dodgy welds on a major safety system. I get hurt anytime I do stuff like that. Now, lets weld the brake lines to the wheel cylinders.
