Thanks for your feedback, really appreciate it. The photo is vintage, turn of the century or so. I chose to work from a vintage photo because so many of my students come to class with images of parents and grandparents, very common and charcoal is an excellent medium for that look.

I’ve tried charcoal but it seems to not adhere to the paper and when I try to blend with a brush, most of it wipes straight off!
you need to use the proper paper. I like Stonehenge by Legion.
You can also use Fabriano or Strathmore drawing papers, or Canson Mi Tientes
