Is the texture seen in your shaded areas from the grain in the paper you are using?

The paper is Stonehenge printmaking paper by Legion. You can get a very smooth finish as you work the drawing. The second drawing is done on Arches hot pressed watercolour paper 300lb. Fantastic paper expensive though.
